sushi kojo nominated for Best sushi in the south okanagan “We aren’t just a restaurant. We Walk life together.” From the outside Kojo Sushi looks like any other small mall restaurant. But one step inside impresses with that wow factor everyone wants when going out to eat. Eyes quickly scan the big, bright restaurant filled with furniture and decorations owner Tatsuo Kan shipped over from Tokyo, Japan long before he even knew he would own a sushi restaurant in Penticton. The sushi bar’s many employees are naturally warm and welcoming because they all like their jobs. And that’s all by design Kan said. “We have a talk every month. We talk about what the business is, what is our service, what is our vision, what is our mission and each one I meet with once a week just to be a mentor,” Kan said. “We just want each of them to figure out their talent… I think that’s maybe my mission to find out the spot for each of them.” Kojo Sushi employs 20 people with 14 employees either immigrating directly from Japan to the Okanagan or having made a stop to work in Vancouver first - just the way Kan did back in 2014. In Tokyo, Kan ran a large, successful catering company for eight years. Prior to that he’d spent time in North America in the late 1990’s as a sushi chef. This is where he and his wife, Kanako met, she was a international student, in Arizona, they then married in Japan. The couple always wanted to return to North America. Although he loved his catering business, where sometimes he would organize five events on the same day from the food to the decorations, he and his wife craved a simpler life. “I enjoyed it so much. It was just like a game. At that time I had two kids. My wife was never happy. Sometimes I don’t see them for two, three days. My wife she is smart and she say you got to wake up this is not real life.” They got serious about setting the wheels in motion to make their dream a reality. Kan sold the catering company and the couple started to look at places they might move in North America. They almost ended up in Sun Valley, Idaho because Kan worked there in 2000. The day before he was to fly to sign the papers to buy a restaurant the couple sat down and had a real conversation about the move. “I said let’s sit down and be honest. Do you think we should do this. The way it work is you have to buy a restaurant and you run it and then you apply for visa there. And we wonder what happens if they deny so we decided not to go ahead,” he said. Kan still went to America but decided to visit with his Sushi Master and mentor in Salt Lake City instead. While there he received an email from his wife perhaps the couple should look at a place called Saskatoon.

sushi kojo A flight change and an email to an international student seminary later and he was on his way to Vancouver. While there he scouted out some restaurants and had his wife call ahead to immigration lawyers. As luck would have it one of the lawyers knew of a restaurant owner that might sponsor him for a work permit. The restaurant owner owned four different types of Japanese restaurants all on Robson Street. They met. The owner was interested and offered to meet with him and his wife while on a trip to Japan in a few weeks. “I told him we could come back in two days to Vancouver. He was happy. He say you can see lawyer, you can see me, we can do everything easier,” he said. Within six months the young family was in Canada. They spent two years in Vancouver area with Kan managing Roll’s Kitchen and then Jinya Ramen Bar.

The plan was a super tiny restaurant. Kan smiled as he said, “sometime God have other plan.” He found what would become Kojo Sushi by chance while looking at another space in the same mall. The original space he looked at wasn’t renovated so it wouldn’t work but while there he stopped to talk to a nearby business owner who casually said the restaurant at the front hadn’t been open for two months. He and his realtor left their cards not thinking anything woud come of it. But the next day a phone call from the owner came and soon after a walk through and then an agreement where Kan would rent the space and the almost brand new equipment was his to use for the next two years.

They still craved the simple life and knew the big city was not for them forever. They looked at Salt Spring Island, Calgary and Kelowna before finding Penticton. They were told about Japanese business owners that owned a bed and breakfast in Summerland and decided to go visit.

On a cold day in November he sat in the restaurant prior to it opening just to see what the foot traffic was like. For hours no one walked by.

“We fly from Vancouver to Penticton and before we landed my wife and I saw the Penticton letters on the mountain and we knew this was it,” he said.

But he decided to open Kojo Sushi on Valentine’s Day 2017. At first it was just him and two employees.

The couple moved to Summerland in July 2016 while Kan was on paternity leave after the couple’s third child was born. “We were here 3rd day in the Okanagan and I was just sitting on the beach and something made me feel not sad but isolated. People were super nice, but I just thought that there was something,” he said.

“She said there’s this place called Saskatoon. You give this much money and they give visa soon, maybe in a year. I googled Saskatoon and that was nothing I like about it,” he said with a laugh.

He started talking to his wife about how he was feeling and and they began thinking of a new business Kan could run, perhaps a bed and breakfast.

Kan opened his bible hoping to hear a direction from God on his family’s future path.

“But I still belong to the company back in Vancouver and I can’t start a business yet. I started to think maybe I might have made a huge mistake to move here,” he said.

“Usually I’m very good, I can hear something. I open eye and I say nothing happened. I start thinking I don’t know anything about Canada and all that comes into my mind is a city called Vancouver,” he said.

They received their permanent residency and decided to start up another food business - this time focussing on that simple life they wanted.

“I started thinking oh no again I made mistake,” he said.

“I figured it would take six months to two years to get it going. But the first night we ran out of fish, we ran out of rice. I thought it would just be the first day but the next day we ran out too. Then I thought ok it will be the first few weeks, then I thought first few months. And then it just gets busier and busier and I say uh-oh we’re going to be in trouble,” he said.

“I never understand why people want to contribute to society or too country. I didn’t get it till I came to Canada but especially in Okanagan now it’s so close to my heart. I feel fortunate not just financial. I just have a lot of nice crew the customer, the support and we just want to give back,” he said. He brought in managers and grew his staff numbers to 20. He said in the summertime up to 16 people work during the peak times. Soon he started to ask his employees what their plans were - if they planned to move on to another restaurant or start their own. They all said they would like to stay forever if possible. Kan knew then he needed to find a way to run the business so everyone could stay employed and be financially secure. He found a second location on Carrington Road in West Kelowna that will hopefully be open by labour day of this year. He then started to ask his employees what they would like to see themselves doing in the future. One employee said they always wanted to run food truck so it’s in the works to buy one and most likely set it up in Keremeos at a fruit stand. “The staff are the heroes. They’re heroes,” he said smiling. “Our idea here is to make real connection with staff, with customer. We aren’t just a restaurant. We walk life together.”

So he rented the original space he looked at for a prep kitchen and hired several more people that first year. “I just see that things just never stop. I start to think I really have to start to think as a company because before I work 17 hour day and everybody wait for me to tell them what to do. It’s not working. It’s not simple life for me,” he said. At the same time he started to focus on giving back to the community by offering hot lunch programs for children and doing a sushi workshop at the Kaleden Seniors Centre. Kojo Sushi also donates to the Vees, Glengarry school and many other groups.

We also added new categories and had readers tell us where the best places to eat and drink, walk the dog, shop, to have a first date and meet a mate. I am new to the Penticton Western News and pleased to be apart of this long-standing tradition of celebrating our local business community. I recently moved here from Vancouver Island, where I have worked for Black Press Media, in Courtenay and Campbell River. This is a homecoming for me. I graduated from Penticton Secondary School, and attended school at Naramata Elementary and Princess Margaret. Some of my family’s favourite spots are here in the Best of the South Okanagan, my mom and stepdad met at Theo’s, and had their first date there. Many family occasions were celebrated there and at Salty’s Beach House. My working career started at the Penticton Lakeside Resort, but

back then is was the Delta Lakeside. There are some changes that our readers and advertisers will see this year, the online voting highlighted new businesses, as well as we have changed up the look of the awards. The branding on the plaques including the board the plaques are printed on — more in keeping with what you see around the province. Building partnerships in the community to find ways to give back has led Peters Bros. Construction to be chosen as the Business of the Year in the Best of South Okanagan awards. “We are a small company that works hard to provide quality services and support our community. We are proud to do our part along with the many businesses, volunteer organizations and individuals that make Penticton a truly unique and special place,” said Joe Cuzzocrea, president of Peters Bros. Construction. Owner, David Kampe, now deceased, was awarded the Businessman of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards in October. Cuzzocrea, who accepted the award on his behalf, said it was welldeserved and Kampe was very happy to be nominated. “Dave has been a pillar of the community for years,” said Cuzzocrea, adding that he doesn’t think anyone has done more for the community than Kampe. “He’s pretty well lived here for his whole life. He just wants to give back to the community which he has done for many years.” Among the many accolades Peters Bros. has received this past year includes the top honour in the province for paving at the Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Awards.

“We’ve also really started focusing on fresh ingredients and ideas with our bar as well,” Eftalia added. “We put a lot of effort into training our staff to perceive this business as their own, and care as much as we the owners do,” says Minas. “The biggest thing that makes us successful is that we are passionate about our business. Minas said their establishment started in the same place the family roots are located — in the small villages in Crete. Both his parents possessed an affinity for food and taste and when they emigrated it began with a pizza shop and then in 1996 they opened La Casa Ouzeria. They moved to their current location on Main Street in 2002.

The biggest change in the restaurant industry is technology. Everything from how the food is ordered, to supplies and inventory to how customers can place their orders. “When we first started we did everything by pen and paper; now we offer online ordering and reservations that customers can do quickly and when it’s convenient for them,” he said. “Marketing has changed enormously as well. Twenty-two years ago we had two options, radio and newspaper, that was it. Now with numerous online marketing tools, social media, and staying connected with our customers, it is a fascinating new era we are in.” Because of the support they have received from the community, they try to give back whenever they can. Among these are: Penticton Minor Hockey, Penticton Minor Lacrosse, Pen-Hi grad and they are a candidate sponsor for Miss Penticton. Eftalia said that in the hospitality industry they’re fortunate to have longterm serving and kitchen staff, some as long as 15 years, and that helps to make them the best they can be. They are a family run business with a large employee family that they couldn’t do it without. “Being well-established in the community and not straying from what we first started with has kept us as a reliable choice for our many loyal and repeat customer as well as first time visitors that come and check us out,” she noted.

They are there when people need them the most and even when they aren’t called upon for duty. For that, Total Restoration Services was chosen as the Penticton Western News Best of the South Okanagan, Best Service award. A core value of Total Restoration is giving back to the community, and not only through monetary donations. Their team volunteers their time to countless events and organizations. “It is always a very emotional time when a customer calls on us for help and we wear that empathetic hat when we walk into situations where people are dealing with an absolutely devastating experience,” said Tracy Van Raes, manager of marking and community relations with Total Restoration Services in Penticton. Being chosen for the award by the public they serve means so much to those that work for the company. “It is a huge success to be nominated by the public. Receiving a recognition like this always brings smiles to our faces and gives our staff the extra drive they need to continue that level of service or community support,” said Van Raes.

In 2018 alone, Total Restoration Penticton supported Queen’s Park Elementary PAC to fundraise for a grades 4 and 5 camping trip, the Wiltse PAC for new playground equipment, JCI Penticton in their fundraiser Jumpstart and for the Exceptional Centre for Learning, the Volunteer Centre, the Hitching Post Restaurant who were hit with a devastating fire, the YES Project, the OSNS annual telethon, Monday Night dinners program which provides warm meals and clothing for those in need, the SOWINS Share the Spirit Campaign and held their third annual Christmas giveaway where they donated $500 in gift certificates, a turkey and other food and

Gratify is owned and operated by Connie and Ryan Oickle, who recently moved their vegan, whole food snack business to 469 Main St. Connie uses her background as a registered holistic nutritionist to modify and enhance dessert recipes for health-conscious customers.
