Options for improving pedestrian safety at Cathedral Grove include a pedestrian overpass, new parking areas west of the main grove and a centre barrier to prevent illegal turns. But a more costly, long-term option to ease the hazardous bottleneck through the park — a highway bypass widely favoured by valley residents — would not solve the main problem, according to the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Ministry and provincial park staff hosted an open house on Thursday, June 20 at the Port Alberni Friendship Centre, unveiling the results of public input intended to fix the chronic congestion on Highway 4 where it bisects the old-growth attraction. Last fall’s first stage of public engagement yielded about 500 suggestions, said Peter Webber, transportation planner. Those were evaluated

and narrowed to a series of options based on environmental impacts on the old growth trees, costs and three key issues — pedestrians, traffic and parking, he said. “We’re not ruling out any options,” he said, including potential highway bypass routes north and south of the park. However, a bypass would not be completed within the established time frame of zero to five years and would not address the highway hazard, diverting only 10 to 20 percent of traffic. One such route is the Horne Lake Connector linking Hwy. 19 with Hwy. 4, a well-studied secondary corridor to Port Alberni with “significant capital costs” and environmental impacts. Three other route options would skirt the main grove through the park’s southeast ridge—steep, challenging and costly terrain for a highway. “While we’re not ruling it out, it’s not addressing the issue in the short term,” WebContinued on A5

Courtenay-Alberni Green Party riding members have chosen Parksville resident Sean Wood to represent them in the next federal election. The nomination meeting was held on Saturday, June 15 at Hupacasath Hall in Port Alberni, with Green Party of Canada members coming from all over the central Vancouver Island riding to vote. Wood won the nomination contest on Saturday, running against fellow contestant Mandolyn Johansson. Wood was raised in Orillia, Ontario, but now lives in Parksville with his wife of 21 years (a registered nurse) and two sons (aged three and six). He owns a small business as a graphic designer and has previously worked for Canadian Pacific Hotels, Whistler-Blackcomb, Intrawest and Arc’teryx. “I moved to B.C. in 1993,”

he explained. “I still remember taking my first breathtaking view on the Sea to Sky highway and seeing the stunning majesty of the mountains.” Sean says he is running for MP because he wants his children, as well as generations to come, to enjoy a stable, sustainable economy which allows Canada’s beautiful landscapes to sustain its people. His first “baptism into the world of official politics” came in 2015, when he assisted Green candidate Glen Sollitt in his federal campaign. Most recently, he was in Nanaimo to support Paul Manly in his federal campaign for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith byelection. Wood said he was “really excited” about the results. “It was really great to see [Manly] win,” said Wood. “It really shook the country. I think Canadians are starting to pay attention.” Wood said he chose to run

with the Greens because the party aligns well with his own political views. Wood follows the federal platform, which strives for a sustainable economy, a fairer tax system and a solution for the country’s climate crisis. He describes the Greens as a “strong voice” to guide the country in the direction it needs to go. “Obviously we’re a small party…but I wanted to put my name forward,” said

Wood. “They want people who are quite honest and have integrity and can bring new ideas to the party.” As a federal Green candidate, Wood says he will vote for the region’s needs over party goals. Wood spent five years as a volunteer firefighter in Parksville, and he hopes to champion tax relief for the other dedicated volunteer firefighters, search and rescue and auxiliary Coast Guard members across Canada. “It’s a dangerous job,” he said. “And I think the federal government can give these people a bit more of a thank you than they have now.” Wood will be running against NDP incumbent Gord Johns and Conservative candidate Byron Horner. The Liberal Party has not yet announced a candidate for the Courtenay-Alberni riding. Canada’s federal election will be held on Monday, Oct. 21.

One pot store approved, one denied ELENA RARDON Alberni Valley News

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District has approved an application for one retail cannabis store in Cherry Creek, and denied another. The applications for Alberni Cannabis Co. and Green Coast Cannabis were both forwarded to the ACRD board from the provincial government back in April. The proposed properties are both located on the Alberni Highway, right across the street from one another. After a public meeting, the ACRD board made the decision to approve the application for Alberni Cannabis Co. in April. The store, if given final approval by the provincial government, will be attached to the Alberni Liquor Store at 2970 Alberni Highway. However, the proponents still have a lengthy process to go through with the province before

a final decision is made. The board denied the application from Green Coast Cannabis on Wednesday, June 12. Directors were worried about the proximity to the other store, which does not meet the 300 metre setback in the ACRD’s policy, and were worried that Green Coast Cannabis had been operating illegally. The application also would have been subject to a temporary use permit, as the location is not zoned for retail. However, director Debbie Haggard, who lives in Cherry Creek, was worried about traffic congestion. She believed that having a retail store on either side of the highway would ease some of that congestion. “That is a very, extremely busy highway,” she said. “If somebody’s going west, you cannot make a left-hand turn. I think by not approving both,

that would cause more issues.” A motion was made to give a positive recommendation to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB), but this was defeated. Manager of planning and development Mike Irg said on Wednesday that this denial will be forwarded to the LCRB. “The board has said ‘no’ to this location,” he explained. “Potentially, [the applicants] could apply for a different location.” A week after this decision was made, the ACRD board hosted a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, June 19 to discuss the policy for cannabis retail stores. Irg suggested an “intake period” twice a year, that would allow applications to be submitted every six months. This discussion will continue at an upcoming Electoral Area Directors Committee meeting.

Jayden Iversen has a lot of pride in his school. The Alberni District Secondary School student was voted “Most School Spirit” in this year’s yearbook. So when the opportunity came up to run for valedictorian for the 2019 graduating class, Iversen jumped at it. In order to be selected as valedictorian, ADSS students have to submit an application with the support of two staff members and ten students, including an essay explaining why they think they will make a good valedictorian. The final selection is voted on during a class assembly. Of the three candidates this year, Iversen won the popular vote. He jokes that he ran for valedictorian out of “an innate sense of obligation” to do everything he can. “I’m proud of my school,” he added. “I’m proud of the class I

represent. I want to be a face of this school. ADSS means a lot to me and it has helped me be who I am today. I just thought it was an opportunity that I can’t miss.” One of Iversen’s favourite memories from his high school years is winning his backside quarterfinals at the wrestling provincials. “That guaranteed that I would be on the banner in the school gym,” he explained. “That was a big goal in my wrestling career, to get on the banner. It’s probably the highlight of my life up until now.” Iversen is a busy student. As well as competing on the school’s wrestling team, he is also involved in rugby, track and field, band and drama. He also coaches and works “a few jobs” in his spare time. “That was another reason I ran for valedictorian,” he said. “I do almost everything. I can represent almost the whole school.” Even with his busy schedule, he

has still found the time to put together a moving speech for this year’s graduation ceremony, which will take place on Friday, June 28. Iversen’s speech has to go through one or two more drafts and revisions, but he plans to have it ready for Friday’s ceremony. “It’s gotta be great,” he said. “I’ll illicit some tears.” The focus of his speech is pride. “Being proud of who we are,” he added. “That’s the main theme. It includes a little bit of reflection, and moving forward with belief and pride in yourself.” Next year, Iversen plans to head to the University of Victoria to study physics, and then education. His eventual goal is to return to ADSS— as a teacher. “I’m coming back,” he said. “I had a lot of good memories here. I know the halls, I know the rooms. There are too many memories here to say goodbye easily.”

Overpass, barrier, parking considered for Grove

Continued from A1 Options for improving parking include a highway centre barrier, to prevent the dangerous illegal turns, the addition of U-turn routes, shoulder barriers to separate parking from the travelled road and the addition of about 50 stalls. “We are looking at additional parking capacity outside of the existing area,” but again, that would be outside of the short-term options, Webber said. “It will require a lot more assessment.” Along with consulting the public, the ministry has studied the safety issue first hand, determining that 530 people, on average, cross the highway in a typical two-hour period during peak season.

A pedestrian underpass, initially reviewed, was assigned low feasibility due to possible flooding and impact on tree roots. An overpass, however, could take several forms with access ramps parallel to the highway of extending into the grove. The information presented at the public events and the feedback questionnaire are available at engage.gov.bc.ca/ cathedralgrove. The questionnaire is open until July 31. Considering the success of the last attempt to enhance safety in the Grove, the ministry is probably wise to proceed with caution this time. An attempt by B.C. The Alberni Valley Hospice Society hosted their fourth annual Butterfly Effect last weekend. 400 butterflies were released on Saturday at 12:30 pm on 10th Avenue in the park next to the new Alberni Valley Hospice Society office location. These butterflies held different meanings for all those who purchased them and let them go. Most were released in memory of loved ones who have passed on. The Rotary Club of Port Alberni assisted in the cooking of hotdogs and hamburgers. Jim’s Clothes Closet donated 100 butterflies and Chapel of Memories, Yates and Jowsey’s also assisted in the sponsorship. Hospice volunteers added their culinary talents to the tune of every flavour imaginable in cookies. Alberni Teens Can Rock added their talent to give the music for all to enjoy.

Graduates are the voices of today The latter half of June is always filled with school awards banquets, final exams and graduation ceremonies. Both Eighth Avenue Learning Centre and North Island College celebrated their graduations last week, and on Friday, students from Alberni District Secondary School will don caps and gowns to walk across the stage and accept their Dogwood certificates. This is always such a time of hope (and for some, of fearing what is to come at the end of the summer). Lately though, we have been hearing criticism of what our youth are standing up for and how they’re saying it. We say, pay no attention to the people behind the curWhat you tain of doomsaying. Give the kids a fighting chance, says writer To the Editor, Re: Activists creating false fear, Letter, June 12 Gary Seinen’s recent letter confirms our local Science Deniers suffer from a terrible green headache called “failed catastrophe syndrome,” so they want us not to worry about the climate emergency. If perchance a catastrophe drops by to prove them wrong, it had better be precisely on time and exactly as awful as predicted, else it’s mongering false fears. Gary is a devotee of free-market

capitalism and fossil fuels, so let’s hear from a few top shelf capitalists. Jeremy Grantham oversees BMO, a 100 billion dollar asset management firm. He calls the climate emergency “the Race of Our Lives.” Bill Gates is another well-respected, allround capital guy and the world’s second-richest person. His May 14 blog, “A critical step to reduce climate change,” is a great overview from the eternal optimist tech geek who always believes human ingenuity married to new tech capitalism can save the

world. Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England (and formerly, of Canada’s) has co-written an open letter calling the emergency “unprecedented, urgent and analytically difficult” to resolve. Recently the CEO of the world’s largest insurer, Munich REI, called for dramatically higher costs for carbon emissions because climate change will cause “extreme” human misery, not to mention is already crushing their profits. Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, worth over one trillion dollars and the world’s

largest, just announced it will dump fossil fuel investments in favour of renewables. So the smartest, wealthiest capitalists are aligning with radical green leftists to accept climate science and the emergency. Not so Gary and the Deniers. Why worry when “5,000 feet of ice didn’t kill off humanity.” Anyone underneath that much ice was real dead, although there were a few live humans huddled beyond the glaciers, shivering in caves and grunting their woes. Won’t it be swell

to get back to the simple life! Calling Sweden’s teenage Greta Thunberg’s attempts to motivate adults a “tragic story” is derogatory and childish. I hope my granddaughters grow up to venerate bright young Greta as a heroine for her composure and courage in the face of all the dismissive, ignorant pushback. Clearcutting old-growth is leaving us poorer, forever JENS WIETING Sierra Club BC

Earlier this month, hundreds of British Columbians visited MLA offices across the province demanding protection of endangered oldgrowth forests and improved forest management, during a day of action organized by Sierra Club BC. In response, David Elstone, the executive director of the Truck Loggers Association, accused our organization of not acknowledging the economic importance of old-growth logging and claimed that clearcutting what little remains is sustainable (B.C. has most sustainably managed forests in the world, June 6). He was joined by columnist Tom Fletcher repeating outdated claims about the climate benefit of replacing old-growth forests with young trees. Fletcher ignores modern science showing that clearcutting ancient

trees results in the rapid loss of huge amounts of carbon accumulated over hundreds of years (Urban environmental “emergency” routine wearing thin, June 9). Sierra Club BC is concerned about the economic, social and ecological impact of clearcutting endangered old-growth forests. True sustainability is leaving similar values and conditions for future generations. But B.C.’s ancient giants have been reduced to a fraction of their former extent, replaced by young, uniform forests cut in short rotation forestry, never allowed to grow old again. Elstone claims B.C.’s forest management is the most sustainable in the world. However, satellite images show that on Vancouver Island we are losing what little forest remains intact three times faster than Brazil’s primary rainforest in the Amazon is being destroyed.

Massive amounts of carbon have been added to the atmosphere as a result and only a tiny fraction remains stored in wood products. One study estimates the loss of carbon when comparing old-growth forest to a 60-year old stand at more than 300 tonnes of carbon per hectare (more than 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide). The current old-growth logging rate on Vancouver Island alone is about 10,000 hectares a year or more than 30 soccer fields a day. The inescapable conclusion is that old-growth logging on Vancouver Island alone contributes millions of tonnes annually to provincial carbon dioxide emissions. Elstone highlights that in recent years close to half of the volume cut on Vancouver Island came from oldgrowth. Today the Island’s productive old-growth has been reduced to about 20 percent of its former extent. This should be a huge concern for

everyone with a job in the woods. We will not leave anything close to what we found for future generations. Plants and animal species that depend on old-growth will vanish. Climate impacts will worsen without the shield of intact ancient forests to reduce droughts, floods and fires. Degraded landscapes will impact the quality of drinking water and allow fewer options for a diverse economy that includes tourism and recreation. Elstone claims 55 per cent of remaining old-growth forests on Vancouver Island is protected. This is highly misleading. As the total amount of old growth trees declines due to logging, of course the percentage that is protected goes up. B.C. could destroy 99 per cent of all old-growth, set aside 1 percent and report 100% protected. Is this the approach to conservation British Columbians want?

Indigenous communities made use of forests in hundreds of different ways without destroying their ecological integrity. Instead, B.C. is exporting about 3 million cubic meters of old-growth per year as raw logs, accepting massive environmental losses for minimal economic benefits. The good news is it is not too late to save what remains of B.C.’s oldgrowth, restore second-growth forests and transition to truly sustainable forest management. Creating more jobs with less ecosystem damage per cubic metre of wood deserves our full support. The longer we wait the harder this change will be. The first step is for industry and government to stop the denial reflected in Elstone and Fletcher’s opinion pieces. Jens Wieting is a Senior Forest and Climate Campaigner with the Sierra Club BC.

Volunteering is often its own reward. Helping others can be just as beneficial to the people doing the helping as it is for the people being helped. Though it can sometimes be hard to find time to volunteer, a close look at some of the various health benefits of volunteering may compel adults and children alike to find the time they need to volunteer. Volunteering and happiness Veteran volunteers may have long suspected they’re happier when they volunteer, and research suggests that’s true. A study from researchers at the London School of Economics that was published in the journal Social Science and Medicine found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. The researchers compared people who never volunteered to people who did, finding that the odds of being “very happy” rose by seven percent among people who volunteered monthly. Those odds increased by 12 percent among people who volunteered every two to four weeks. Volunteering and mental health Psychologists have long known that social interaction can improve mental health. Psychology Today notes that interacting with others decreases feelings of depression while increasing feelings of well-being. Volunteering

is a great way to meet new people, exposing volunteers to people with shared interests. That can be especially valuable to people who are new to a community, helping them to avoid feelings of loneliness after moving to an area where they have no preexisting social network. Volunteering and long-term health Volunteering that requires social interaction can produce long-term health benefits that can have a profound impact on quality of life as men and women age. A recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease focused on participants without dementia who were involved in a highly interactive discussion group. Researchers compared those participants to others who participated in Tai Chi or walking or were part of a control group that did not receive any interventions. The former group exhibited improved cognitive function, and MRIs indicated they increased their brain volumes after being involved in the discussion group. Larger brain volume has been linked to a lower risk of dementia. Many volunteering opportunities require routine interaction with others, potentially providing significant, longterm health benefits as a result. While volunteering is a selfless act, volunteers may be benefitting in ways that can improve their lives in both the short- and long-term.

Lois Luckett won the annual Lion’s Club grocery dash at Buy Low Foods for a limit of $500. She went for her dash on Sunday, June 9 with the assistance of her husband. Grocery supervisor Jesse Neuwirth rang up

the total, which was only $10 over the limit. The local Kinsmen Club made a donation of $500 to Young Life coach Rebecca Roosma. She had members with her at the time of the donation that was presented by

new Kinsmen club member Stuart Stephens. The Mid-Island Kidney Association had their spring raffle draw done at the local dialysis unit on Monday, June 10. The winners are as follows: first place Cindy Simpson

(won two $150 gift certificates to Quality Foods and No Frills), second place Birgit Isaacs (who won a portable barbeque valued at $100) and third place Austin Smith (winning a piece of art worth $75).

GERRY FAGAN Alberni Golf The Ladies West Coast Amateur Two Ball Tournament was held at the Alberni Golf Course on Sunday. There was a great turnout, with 72 women from all over the Island participating. Many thanks to Toni Clackson for organizing the event. Also thanks to the scoring team of LaDonna Knutson, Kathy White, Jan Cross and Pat Nicklen and thanks to Pro. Brian Rands and his staff for their help. After golf, the ladies enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch thanks to Ron Scholtie and the kitchen and dinning room staff. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day, as half the field went home with a prize. The first place team on the gross side went to the twosome of Shelley Stouffer and Karen Kloske of March Meadows, shooting 66. Second place was Dar Michell and Christina Proteau of Alberni and Mt. Brenton, shooting 69. Third gross was won by Mary Ruston and Holly Sanders from Glacier Greens, shooting 73. Fourth low gross was won by Josee Deslauriers and Sally Dobler of Morningstar, carding 74. The fifth low gross was awarded to the team of Carol Ayley and Raelene Robertson of Crown Isle, coming in with 76. On the net side, taking first place was Amber Dufour and Michelle Bertrand from Glacier Greens, shooting 63. Second low net went to Kelly Strachan and Fran Robinson, also shooting 63. Third spot went to Nancy Booth and Tammy Brunin of Glacier Greens and Story Creek, shooting net 65. Fourth place went to Marge Bibby and Carol Dalzell of Cottonwood, also carding 65. The fifth low net was won by Katy Doran and Jacy Tremblay of Comox, coming in with 66. After a two week break, the Men’s Club will return to action this coming Sunday, June 30. It will be a best net and best gross competition, with the usual closest to the pins and money pot as well as the charity closest to the pin up for grabs.

Two Port Alberni riders competed in the Pony Club Regional Championships earlier this month. The Courtenay Pony Club hosted the championships on Saturday, June 8. Coach Gina Kararrigas, owner of Flying Changes Riding School in Coombs, accompanied more than 20 of her students and horses to the show. Two of them— Kaelin Britton and Elaena Dobbyn—were from Port Alberni. “They both did really good,” said Leanna Britton,

Kaelin’s mother. Kaelin, age 12, competed on “Untouchable” aka “Jimmy,” one of her coach’s horses. It was Kaelin’s first horse show. She and Jimmy competed in four jumping courses over crosspoles and a flat class, where they earned a third place ribbon, two fourth place ribbons and two fifth place ribbons. Dobbyn, age 10, rode “Fancy Nancy.” She competed in the hunter/jumper two-foot-three, where she won three first place ribbons and two third place ribbons. She also won the Pony Club gold medal for her class.

Five mens basketball teams battled through the five-week regular season and three weeks of playoffs to arrive at Championship Week to crown our 2019 Mens Spring League Champion. Both championship games featured end to end action as competitors left everything they had on the court. Semi-final: Alberni Co-op (67) vs. LB Woodchoppers (57) In the second half, Co-op surged back to a double-digit lead with five minutes to go and never looked back. Final score 67-57. Jayden Moss finished with an outstanding 42-point playoff effort and Eddie Fred had 11 for the victorious Co-op squad. The Woodchoppers had four players hit double digits: Isaac Jack (15), Dave Eamer (13), Brayden Kirschner and Trey Bell 10 apiece as the LB Woodchopper’s season ended with a third place finish. Championship: Ladybird Engrav-

ing (68) vs. Alberni Co-op (59) It was only fitting that these two squads should meet in the finals. The only blemishes to the Co-op squad’s record came at the hands of Ladybird, and some of the most hotly contested battles for Ladybird were against this Co-op team. Each squad can run. Each squad can shoot. Each squad can dominate the boards seemingly at will when motivated. The clock eventually bled down to the final seconds and a 68-59 final score. Jayden Moss contributed 26 pts and Chris Gow and Eddie Fred had 11 pts for the second place Co-op finish. Mike Lange’s 18 pts, Kevin Titian Jr’s 14 pts and Martin Adair’s 11 pts helped Ladybird Engraving hoist the Men’s Spring League trophy as the 2019 Champions. Sandra Louise Freeman It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Sandra Louise Freeman June 13, 2019. Born March 14, 1946 in St Catherineâ€™s Ontario to Francis (JET), and Alberta Judge. She was predeceased by her husband Ervin Alfred Freeman, brothers Albert and Chris, and twin sister Sharin. She is survived by her son Richard (Marnie), sisters Barbara, Nancy and Heather. She also has three grandsons that she was always so very proud of, Russell (Amanda), Alexander, and Liam. Terri (husband Walt) was Sandraâ€™s best friend of over 40 years, countless memories and ďŹ rsts were shared between the two. Never the type to make a fuss, she was our Sandra and she will be dearly missed. Cremation has taken place in AB, through Snodgrass Funeral Home. In Loving Memory Of Corey Herbert Porter, 76 passed away Tuesday June 18, 2019 with his family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Born November 24th, 1942 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, he was the son of the late Herb and Muriel Porter. He is predeceased is by his brother Roy Porter and survived by their sister Beverly Lloyd (Don). Corey grew up in the Alberni Valley and as a young man moved to Prince George where he worked in the pulp and paper industry. When he returned to Port Alberni with his young family he was part owner of the Barclay Hotel and later trucking companies. He leaves behind his partner Jan Richmond and is predeceased by his late wife Lillian. Corey is survived by his daughter Nicole Uzelman (Randy), son Clinton Porter (Jacquelyn), two grandchildren, Shelby Uzelman (Jason), Dallas Uzelman (Cassidy): Step Children Louise Shepherd (Tim), Laura Van Vilet (Ron), Rhonda Richmond (Jay), Shad Richmond and Janâ€™s nine grandchildren. Stuart Messenger passed away on Thursday, June 20th, 2019 at the age of 64 after a devastating terminal cancer diagnosis four weeks ago. Born in Vancouver, Stuart also resided in Lantzville, Victoria, Burnaby, and Williams Lake, before settling in Port Alberni 28 years ago. Stuart was predeceased by his parents Jim and Gladys Messenger, and son Alec Messenger. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Patricia Messenger (nĂŠe Dorran), his brother Byron; loving children James (Kate), Theresa Hammond (Evan), Maureen Miller (Mike), Michael (Sarah); cherished grandchildren: Grady, GriďŹƒn, Foster, Ruby, Caleb, Neila, James Weston, Layla, and Myla. Stuart was a foster parent for 35 years and was a father ďŹ gure to dozens of youth including special friend GeoďŹ€ery. Stuart also leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many great friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday July 2nd 1:00pm at Cherry Creek Hall, 3720 Moore Road. The family is thankful for the care and support of Dr. Fraser, Dr. Johnson, and many caring nurses who supported him over the last month at WCGH, home support, and Ty Watson. Passed away in Rainbow Gardens on Thursday, June 13th at the age of 81 years. Predeceased by husband Billy; sister Joan; brother Tony; grandchild Chrissy and great niece Natalie. Survived by children Karen, Sheryl (Chris), Chris, and Jessica (Daryl); grandchildren Shawna and Robyn; great grandchildren Nicky and Isaac, many nieces, nephews as well as extended family in the UK, Canada and the United States. Born in London, Sheila moved to New Zealand with her husband Billy and started a family before moving to Port Alberni in the 1970s and eventually settled on a peaceful quiet acre out Beaver Creek where Sheila enjoyed their fruit trees and living among the wildlife. At Notre Dame Church, she was involved in the Catholic Womenâ€™s League as well as a volunteer teaching bible school. Sheilaâ€™s passion and gifts were music and poetry. She loved teaching piano and she played beautifully. Sheila loved children and enjoyed being a part of her childrenâ€™s school and after school functions. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday July 9th, 2019 at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, 4731 Burke Road with Father Harrison Ayre oďŹƒciating. May 16, 1931 â€“ June 15, 2019 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother at the age of 88. Mom passed away peacefully in the care of Ty Watson House with her son Bill by her side. Mom was predeceased by her parents Art and Grace Starrie, her husband Bill (Popsea) and brother Art Starrie. She will be greatly missed by her 4 children, Linda (Grant), Bill (Mary), Gary, Larry (Kris), her sister Louise Marsh, 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mom was born and raised in Port Alberni. She won the soap box derby at 14 years old, as the only girl entered. She worked at the Plywoods, Home Store, Woodwardâ€™s and the Curling Rink. Mom and Dadâ€™s happy place was their float cabin on Flemming Island, where they shared many fun times with family and friends. Mom was known for her fishing skills and awesome seafood chowder. Mom volunteered a lot in the Valley and was proudest of teaching Special Olympic and Jr. Curling for 10 years with her friend Donna. They then taught line-dancing, even taking a trip to China and dancing on the Great Wall. For peace of mind Mom joined Taoist Tai Chi and knit many beautiful socks for family and friends. There will be a Celebration of Life Tea, July 14th from 11:00 AM â€“ 2:00 PM at Charâ€™s Landing â€“ 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni. Stanley Ivan ROBERTSON July 31, 1939 â€“ June 13, 2019 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stanley Ivan Robertson. Stan was born in Enderby, BC on July 31, 1939 and passed on Thursday June 13, 2019 at Westhaven Care Facility in Port Alberni with his loving family by his side. Stan was predeceased by his parents Freda and Ted Robertson; and his son, Curtis. He will be forever missed by his loving wife of 30 years, Linda; daughter, Cara (Bill) Wilson from Baynes Lake, BC; sister, Eveline (Hugh) Baanstra of Oliver, BC; stepchildren, Ray (Eileen), Sherri (Marten); grandchildren, Jordan, Tyler, Kyla, Matthew, and Zachary. Stan worked for many years as a lineman for BC Hydro. For 13 years, he and his first wife, Chris, ran a ranch in Chilanko Forks, where they raised their two children, Curtis and Cara. In 1989, Stan relocated to Port Alberni for work. It was there he met Linda and the two of them lived in the valley until his passing. In keeping with Stanâ€™s wishes no formal funeral service will be held. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life and all that he meant to them at a later date. Stanâ€™s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at Westhaven for the great care they provided to him during his time there. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to honour Stanâ€™s memory may do so by making a donation in his name to the Alzheimerâ€™s Association in their community.

Music and dancing with Graham at any social party was one of her favourite things to do. She loved boating down the canal & later the Legion Cruise became an annual favorite pastime. She truly was a woman who enjoyed the simple things in life & â€˜the Valleyâ€™. Maureen & Graham shared a passion for Ty Watson House, they ran the meat draw at the Kingsway hotel for several years and that made her heart sing! She was everyoneâ€™s friend where she was affectionately known as Mo, Mom or Mamma. Maureen will always be remembered for her kindness, big generous heart, considerate & giving nature. There will be a Celebration of Life for this beautiful woman at the Royal Canadian Legion, on June 30th 1:00 PM â€“ 3:00 PM, which would have been Maureen & Grahamâ€™s 56th wedding anniversary. Musical fundraiser supports life after loss ELENA RARDON Alberni Valley News

A musical fundraiser will take place at Char’s Landing in Port Alberni this weekend, raising funds to provide grief and loss supports to children and youth on Vancouver Island. The Camp Kerry Society specializes in providing bereavement programs and supports to individuals and families impacted by serious illness, grief and loss. Most recently, the society has started working with hospices across Vancouver Island to development a youth bereavement program on the Island. Although Camp Kerry is based in New Westminster, its founder—Dr. Heather Mohan—lives in Port Alberni. “That’s part of the reason behind bringing something [to the Island],” Mohan explained. “We definitely know there’s a need for grief support here. We

just wanted to do something to help.” The starting point for Camp Kerry is connecting with youth who have experienced significant loss—usually the loss of a parent or guardian. After connecting with youth, therapists will work with them in group settings or one-on-one counselling. Camp Kerry also offers retreats and recreational activities—many of which are planned and delivered by other youth. plete her Bachelor of Music Therapy Degree at Capilano University and now specializes in working as a music therapist with those coping with serious illness, grief and loss. Her new material reflects her experience of working deeply with people from all walks of life and integrates her own experiences with those she touches in her work. She will be joined on Saturday by a team of music therapists—including Mohan. “We’ve all worked extensively in this field,” said Mohan. “The music isn’t about grief, per se. It’s celebrating and recognizing love and loss.
