Car show to benefit Gizeh Shriners of BC and Yukon Much more than clowns, hats with tassels and tiny motorcycles, Shriners is a philanthropic organization providing pediatric health care for children. The volunteer-run clubs of Gizeh Shriners of BC and Yukon hold fundraising events throughout the year to support the child services society. MSA Ford will play host to a car show in support of local Shriners at the Fraser Valley Auto Mall on July 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Show goers can expect to enjoy cars and fun family activities. All proceeds raised from the event will support the Gizeh Shriners of British Columbia and Yukon. “We’re giving out hot dogs for donations and there will be clowns and a drum and bugle band,” said Abbotsford Shrine Club No. 40 secretary/treasurer Blair Schaufele. Raffle tickets for the 2019 Shriners Draw for Kids will be available at the car show. This year’s grand prize is a 2019 Ford Mustang, valued at more than $50,000. Second prize is $10,000 cash and third prize is $5,000. Proceeds from the raffle go to Shriners of BC and Yukon Child Services Society. “If you walk down the street today, people don’t know much about Shriners. They think of red fuzzy hats and scooters,” Schaufele said. “We’re here more for the kids. Every one of us who is a Shriner has an interest in helping children.”
The Gizeh Shriners of BC and Yukon serves the children of British Columbia and Yukon by growing the Shrine fraternity and providing pediatric specialty care, research and medical education through Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Shriners hospitals treat children up to age 18 with orthopedic conditions, burns,

spinal cord injuries and cleft palate. Regardless of a family’s ability to pay, patients receive all services in a family-centred environment. Schaufele, a retired police officer, has visited four of the 22 Shriners hospitals in North America and is passionate about the organization.
MAIN EVENT
On one of his visits, Schaufele met a young boy who was born with his feet turned inward, resulting in one foot being amputated. “He was getting a new prosthetic the day we were visiting,” he said. “At first he walked gingerly….Then the tech asked him to run and get something and he started running! It was so rewarding to see that, to know we helped him in that respect and know he can have a normal life.” For those children in BC and Yukon requiring medical attention for any of the orthopedic or other pediatric specialty conditions the Shriners hospitals treat, transportation, accommodation, all associated medical treatment and followup are provided at Shriners Hospitals for Children. For more information, call 604-291-7707 (extension 122) or email info@bcshriners.com. At present, there are 389 children on the total active Gizeh Temple Shrine Child count in BC and Yukon. In 1902, the Gizeh Shriners of BC and Yukon began and is now the largest geographical jurisdiction in the Shriners organization. There are more than 80 clubs and units affiliated with Gizeh throughout BC and Yukon. The Abbotsford club meets on the fourth Monday of most months. For more information, visit bcshriners.com.

Spring Pasta Salad
THE
DISH
with Arugula Lemon Pesto
This fresh pasta salad just shouts spring with its vibrant green colour and the grilled asparagus adds another layer of delicious, smoky flavour. The arugula pesto is so versatile and extra pesto can be used in a variety of ways or frozen for longer storage. Pasta salads are very flexible, so feel free to add crumbled feta or goat cheese, chopped olives, fresh tomatoes instead of sundried, or grilled green beans instead of asparagus.
INGREDIENTS Arugula Pesto 3 cups packed arugula ¼ cup packed basil leaves 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/3 cup pine nuts or walnuts 1 tsp lemon zest
1 tsp lemon juice 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 tsp kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 cup finely grated Parmesan
Pasta Salad 1 lb. pasta, any shape will do 1 tbsp. Major chicken base or 2 cups chicken broth, optional 1 bunch fresh asparagus ¼ cup diced sun-dried tomatoes or sun-dried tomato tapenade, drained well Handful of fresh arugula or spinach leaves Basil and arugula leaves for garnish
METHOD: First, let’s start with the pesto. Combine the arugula, basil, salt, walnuts or pine nuts, lemon juice and zest, and garlic into a food

processor. Remove the mixture from the processor and put it into a bowl. Stir in the Parmesan cheese. Set aside, or put into the fridge while you prepare the rest of the meal. Heat grill to medium heat. Drizzle asparagus with olive oil and once BBQ is heated, grill asparagus for approximately 5 minutes. You want some grill marks, but you want the spears to still be fairly firm. Keep a few spears whole for garnish, and chop the rest into 2-inch pieces. Cool slightly. Meanwhile, bring a pot of water to boil and add Major’s chicken base to dissolve. This step is optional but helps to keep the pasta from sticking together and also gives it an extra flavour boost. You can also just add some chicken broth to your water. Cook pasta until al-dente. Drain and allow to cool slightly, stirring once in a while to prevent pasta from sticking together. Toss pasta with sun-dried tomatoes, chopped asparagus and enough pesto to coat everything. Stir in arugula or spinach leaves. The pasta will soak up quite a bit of the pesto, but you can always stir in more after a few hours. Garnish with remaining asparagus spears and slivered basil. Best served at room temperature. If you’re taking it out the fridge, let it come to room temperature before serving. This fresh pasta salad just shouts “spring” with its bright green colour and vibrant flavours. The arugula pesto is so versatile and can be used in a variety of ways, or frozen for longer storage. The Farmer and the Foodie And so it begins! The incredible bounty of local fruits and vegetables we are privileged to enjoy, fresh from the farmers who grow them. We’ve already experienced a daily supply of juicy, sunkissed Lepp Farm’s strawberries, and this weekend Farmer Rob is bringing home the first Osoyoos sweet cherries. While on a morning Lepp Farm “walkabout” today, I enjoyed snacking on the first baby cucumbers. Pickling cucumbers, just as delicious eaten fresh as they are made into pickles, are now only a few days away, and tender green beans will be ready for harvest in about a week. And right around Canada Day, we will be picking the first of the apricots. It feels like we skipped right over spring, from winter to summer. Nothing says summer like a simple pasta salad and this month’s recipe is adaptable to whatever veggie is in season. Don’t
