Jaydlyn is the daughter of Missy Cerny and Keon Chung. She has a very large family consisting of one biological brother Jagur, one step brother Owen and two step sisters Aviya and Rachel. Jaydlyn has been musically inclined and passionate about singing since she was a little girl. She participated in middle school band, choir, and musical productions and now takes part in the productions and choir at Mount Baker. An honour roll student, Jaydlyn participates in Mount Baker’s leadership group and the District Student Advisory Council. She has also volunteered for Caring for Kids and Cranbrook Clean Up Day. Last year, Jaydlyn was named Miss Teenage Kootenay 2018, and placed Top 20 overall in Miss Teenage Canada. Jaydlyn hopes to continue a career in modelling; however, also plans to pursue post secondary studies in either Psychology or Marine Biology. Jaydlyn is proudly sponsored by Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary.

Sharron is the daughter of John and Hajnalka. She and her family moved to Cranbrook in 2017 from Maple Ridge. Sharron has tried numerous activities, including: art, tennis, golf, dancing, acting, and singing. She was a competitive rock climber for over four years before moving to Cranbrook. Sharron has been doing theatre since she was 11 when she auditioned to be in the chorus of the Royal Canadian Theatre Company’s re-written pantomime version of Sleeping Beauty. She did two more Pantomimes with the company: Puss-n-Boots and Beauty and the Beast. She has been in Mount Baker’s productions of The Lodge, Seussical the Musical, and Mamma Mia. In school, Sharron’s favourite classes include Art, Drama, English and Psychology. Following graduation, Sharron hopes to pursue a PhD in the philosophy of clinical social work from the University of Calgary. Sharron is proud to be sponsored by the Kin Club.
Faith is the daughter of Jason and Kate McWhirter and is younger sister of Brianna. Faith started boxing with her mom and has been a member of the Cranbrook Eagles Boxing Club for the past 6 years. She also enjoys playing baseball, volleyball, and basketball. Faith started piano lessons when she was five and now plays the piano, guitar, trumpet, and French horn. Faith is also an avid singer. She is currently involved in all of the music programs at Mount Baker. Faith has been involved in children’s ministry and music at First Baptist Church for the past eight years. She currently teaches grade 3 Sunday school and leads music. Following Graduation, Faith hopes to attend Prairie College to pursue a Bachelor of Pastoral Ministry and a Bachelor of Worship Leading and Music. Faith is proud to be sponsored by Sugar Town Quilt Company.
Danielle Lazar is the daughter of Royce and Cara. She has two sisters Caylee and Karissa. Danielle was born in Prince George and moved to Cranbrook when she was nine years old. She is currently in grade 11 at Mount Baker and looks forward to attending the College of the Rockies next year as a dual credit student – where she will be taking accounting and political science. An avid athlete, Danielle grew up playing softball and other sports. She first started skating when she was three years old. She started playing Ringette at age 5 and later hockey. This year, she was proud to participate as a coach in the Canadian Tire first shift hockey program. Away from the ice, Danielle also coached the grade 5-6 basketball team at Kootenay Christian Academy. Danielle is proudly sponsored by the Colombo Lodge.

Hannah was born in Quesnel BC and moved to Cranbrook when she was four with her parents Dana and Mike and two older brothers Tyler and Dawson. Hannah is passionate about music and she almost never leaves the house without a pair of earbuds. You can usually find her listening to hip hop and pop. She believes that music has the power to inspire and heal. Her favourite subjects in school include art, drama and math. On top of her schooling, Hannah has been working part time at Staples for just over a year, where she often works in the copy centre. In her spare time, you can find Hannah drawing and watching movies. Her favourite genre is comedies and her all-time favourite movie is Legend of Tarzan. Following graduation Hannah has her sights set on post secondary studies in business or Sociology. Hannah is proudly sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Mya was born in Kamloops and is the daughter of Michael and Corinna. She has one younger brother, Nate. When Mya was seven, she had her first singing lesson with Chuck Bissett. By the age of 12, Mya was performing classical voice, participating in the local performing arts festival and qualifying for Provincials. Since then, she has won first place at the East Kootenay Performing Arts Festival and gone to Provincials three years in a row. At the 2018 provincials, she received honourable mention. She has attended vocal intensive programs at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Mya is with the Warriors aboriginal leadership group, a participant in the choir, and the jazz band at Mount Baker. Following graduation, Mya hopes to participate in the Rotary Exchange Program. Mya is proudly sponsored by the Cranbrook Lions Club.
Sheila is the daughter of Robert and Maureen and has one younger brother Nicholas. Sheila has been involved in her indigenous culture for as long as she can remember. She attends powwows, Ktunaxa girls Group, drumming, dancing, beading, art, and traditional games. When Sheila was eight years old, she began her journey in Girl Guides of Canada, which led her though Guides, Pathfinders, and now Rangers and Trex. Guiding trips to destinations like Mt. Robson, Vancouver Island, and SOAR adventure camp have given Sheila the opportunity to see different parts of British Columbia and experience the beauty of our Province. In July of 2020, Sheila will be attending a girl guide camp in India. Sheila hopes to become part of the Ace-It Program in Grade 12 where she would transfer to the College of the Rockies to pursue her goal of becoming a Heavy Duty Mechanic. Sheila is proudly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cranbrook.

ranbrook’s Youth Ambassadors Isabella Fiorentino and Brooke Wheeldon have been outstanding representatives for our City. They’ve been active in school activities, community projects and events and have represented Cranbrook at festivals throughout BC, Alberta and Montana. The ladies will pass on their crowns at the 2019 Youth Ambassador Pageant being held at the Key City Theatre on Friday, June 14th. The seven candidates have been preparing for since January. They have completed a public speaking course with Kathy Simon and members of Toastmasters and have participated in a number of session including: the history of Cranbrook with Jim Cameron; the Ktunaxa Creation Story and history of the Ktunaxa Nation with Nasu?kin (Chief) Joe Pierre Jr. and role of the Mayor and City Council presented by Councillor Ron Popoff. Other sessions included time management, resume writing and interview techniques, financial planning, gowns of the era, nutrition and wellness, auto maintenance, self defense, hair care, make up and etiquette. The candidates have also been working closely with their respective sponsoring organizations at meetings and events and have taken part in a number of community activities. The Sweetheart Society gratefully acknowledges the dedication given by Isabella and Brooke this past year and wishes them success in their future endeavours.

European settlers had come to a flashpoint, when two local Ktunaxa men accused of killing a pair of miners were released from jail by their compatriots. This, combined with an ongoing land dispute regarding Ktunaxa land claimed by local settler Colonel James Baker, meant the situation in Kootenay had become critical. D Division arrived at the site of what would be the NWMP’s first permanent post beyond the Rocky Mountains. After setting up Kootenay Post at Galbraith’s Ferry, near what is now Cranbrook, Steele took action to diffuse tensions in the region and to settle the legal case which had called for the NWMP’s presence. At Steele’s request Chief Isadore handed over the two suspects for trial. Upon reviewing the evidence Steele soon realized that the case against the two Ktunaxa was superficial and quickly dismissed the charges. Steele went on to settle most of the outstanding problems in East Kootenay, including many land disputes between settlers and First Nation people. D Division departed the area in the summer of 1888. After leaving Kootenay, Steele served in southern Alberta, waiting for his chance to move into the upper echelon of leadership in the NWMP. But political intrigue worked against Steele and he was never appointed Commissioner or Assistant Commissioner. In the 1890s Sam Steele was sent to bring law and order to the Klondike gold fields. However,

political intrigue once again worked against him and in 1899 he was recalled. He subsequently accepted the command of a regiment being sent to fight in the Boer War. Steele served the rest of his life in other military and police organizations including: Lord Strathcona’s Horse Regiment, the South African constabulary and the Canadian expeditionary force in World War I. After a long and grueling service to his country, he passed away on January 30, 1919 at the age of 70.

ountains of Opportunity has been the theme of the City of Cranbrook float for the past two years. The City of Cranbrook and the Sweetheart Society became “float” partners when Rick Jensen served as Mayor of the City (91984 – 1990). The City funds the float while the Sweetheart Society accepts the responsibility to build, maintain and travel with the float. It is estimated that approximately 800 volunteer hours are spent with the designing, building, maintaining and traveling. In order to compete in a variety of parades, the theme must be changed every two years. Traveling into other communities, the City of Cranbrook float offers a decorative ice breaker at many community events where our Youth Ambassadors have the opportunity to represent Cranbrook, invite others to visit and learn of our Sam Steele history.
Joe McGowan has taken on the position of Float Chairman following the resignation of long-time chairman Jim Wavrecan. During the spring months, a fair amount of maintenance has been done on the float structure and van. Several businesses have provided exceptional donations and service and we would like to thank Fiorentino Bros, Caliper Machine, OK Tire, Integra Tire, Shaw’s Enterprises Ltd., and Farbrook Auto. Plans for this summer’s travel include, Julyfest in Kimberley, Penticton Peach Festival, Lethbridge Whoop up Days, Whitefish Winter Carnival and the Santa Claus parade. In addition, the Ambassador team represented Cranbrook at the Summerland and Trail pageants. The float and Ambassadors represent the best of Cranbrook and always leave a lasting and warm welcome.
