Ponoka offers choice in education Parents in Ponoka don’t have to look far for educational options. The town has three separate school streams to choose from — Public, Catholic and Christian — all of which have schools in the community. All three systems provide a high level of instruction in addition to programming with a wide variety of options, especially for high school students. For those that choose the public system, Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) has three elementary schools in the immediate area — Ponoka Elementary, K-6, and two rural schools, Crestomere to the west, K-9, and Mecca Glen to the east, K-9. WCPS also provides the community with a wonderful pre-K playschool program called the Bright Futures Play Academy. Those schools then funnel students to Ponoka Secondary Campus or St. Augustine for high school. The school’s

athletic programs and the Broncs World Tour are among the excellent programming options available. WCPS also has an alternative high school education program operated through The Brick Learning Centre that focuses on one-on-one instruction and flexible hours. For parents that want a more faith infused educational setting, St. Augustine School provides an environment for K to 12 students through the St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic School Division The school is well known for its community involvement, commitment to academics as well as their Grade 7-12 athletics programs. The other option is the Ponoka Christian School, an independent and interdenominational school community with a Christian foundation. The school runs from Kindergarten to Grade 9 with a focus on melding together educating the students with home and church.

Trails and adventure for all It’s easy to stay active with such beautiful natural areas calling you to the outdoors right in your backyard. Ponoka boasts an extensive trail system along the Battle River, the popular Centennial Park and the close-by JJ Collett Natural Area. The Battle River A paved trail winds its way through Ponoka, travelling alongside the Battle River’s scenic riverbed and valley. The mature trees and foliage make for stunning views in any season, and is a relaxed, easy terrain ideal for any level of walker or runner and is perfect for a gentle family bike ride. The valley has other, more adventurous paths off the beaten trail that provide hikers and bikers with a great challenge as well. Those taking in the trails will enjoy spotting wildlife, such as deer, birds and maybe even a beaver, that frequent the river valley. And for anyone that takes their dogs along, there is an off-leash area located at the north end of the trail system. Centennial Park Centennial Park, located on Highway 2A, is another amenity to enjoy with paths and benches, playground, large pond with a fountain and a splash park for families. The park also has a stage, which is used to host concerts, various events and birthday parties throughout the year.

Ponoka’s trail system runs along the Battle River within the river valley. It’s one of Ponoka’s best-kept secrets and the trails are always used no matter the season. JJ Collett Natural Area Just a few kilometres south of Ponoka, the JJ Collett Provincial Natural area is a pristine forested area with paths for hikers and 635 acres for nature lovers to explore. The aspen parkland, natural sand dunes and white spruce trees are just some of the natural features people will see travelling the 18 kilometres of trails. There are also wetlands filled with wildlife and grassland meadows in this ecologically diverse habitat. The JJ Collett Natural Foundation also installed a new bridge this year. The foundation holds a guided Spring Walk every year and the area is open year-round for visitors.

Family and youth recreation a priority for Ponoka There are many exciting recreation opportunites for active families and individuals in Ponoka â€” thereâ€™s so much to do! During the hot summer days, cooling off at the splash park in the heart of Ponoka and Centennial Park along Highway 2A is great fun for the little ones. Adults can watch close by under the shade of the gazebos and enjoy a family picnic when the kids get hungry. There is also the Lions Club pond which has trout for those who have a hankering to fish.

Health service changes come to Ponoka Health care in Ponoka provides more than just the basics and has updated access to doctors. Now housed in a state-of-the-art clinic on 50 Street, the Battle River Medical Clinic is open five days a week with 10 doctors available and recently enacted an improved policy to provide care to walk-in patients as well as to those that don’t have a family physician. Called the Daily Access Clinic, those patients that do not have an appointment that day can register for the first-come, first served appointments when the clinic opens. Patients will then be provided an approximate time they will be seen and can either choose to wait or come back closer to their appointed time. Along with the doctors, the clinic is part of the Wolf Creek Primary Care Network that serves Ponoka, Rimbey, Lacombe, Bentley, Innisfail and Sylvan Lake. This allows patient access to dieticians, social workers and heart health education specialists. Also available are programs on diabetes education, exercise classes, fall prevention, weight control and smoking cessation. For a higher level of care along with laboratory, radiology, obstetrical and endoscopy services, the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre is ready and able. With a 24-hour, seven day a week emergency department and 34 acute care beds, the full service hospital is there when anyone needs it. The hospital is also connected to a pair of seniors housing facilities, Golden Leisure Lodge and Legacy Place, both operated by the Rimoka Housing Foundation. The two facilities offer various levels of care from

independent living units to assisted living and other options. Ponoka is also home to three other seniors living residences — Season’s Ponoka, Reid Manor and Northcott Care Centre. Many seniors, whether at home or in a facility, utilize offerings from Family and Community Support Services through their volunteer run programs. These include Meals on Wheels, home care and specialized transportation. One other unique facility in Ponoka that is recognized around the world for its work with patients is the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury. Located on the edge of the community in a quiet space near the banks of the Battle River, the centre provides specialized treatment and programming for individuals in need of a certain high level of care. On the grounds, the centre concentrates on areas including rehabilitation, adult psychiatry, geriatric mental health, dementia and other mental health professional programming. The Rising Sun Clubhouse, located downtown, also assists in this effort through programming and help provided to those in the community living with social, mental and physical challenges. And rounding out the services in Ponoka, the community is also home to eye care professionals, dental practices, chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapy businesses and a spa providing both physical and spiritual care.

Ag society staying with its roots Agricultural societies have been part of rural communities such as Ponoka since nearly the dawn of Alberta. The Ponoka Agricultural Society is one of the oldest in the province, having orginated in the early 1900s. That said, the society has seen some recent changes that have it more focused on its orginal roots. The annual bench show, slated for Aug. 16 and 17 at Ponoka’s Royal Canadian Legion, is one of the last truly agricultural shows left in the province. Featuring hundreds of different classes and categories, the show has seen a significant increase in entries in the junior categories. All of this despite the growing trend toward larger farms with fewer rural residents.

Taking care of our youth The Ponoka Youth Centre (PYC) has a variety of wonderful programs and activities for kids and teenagers looking for more to do after school. There are programs available for kids from Kindergarten all the way to Grade 12, with after-school care throughout the year — all provided at a low cost with subsidy available. PYC has youth drop-in on Thursday and Friday evenings, supervised by staff and screened community volunteers. It’s a great hang out for friends who can play board games and play video games or even take on others in a game of pool.

In addition to the many activities planned after school, there are program choices that foster leadership, empowerment and assist students that want to improve with academics and other skills to transition out of school. The PYC operates under the same roof as Ponoka’s Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and the Boys and Girls Club of Wolf Creek. The former of which promotes traditional mentoring and an in-school mentor program while the latter provides youth services, activities and support. There are also programs offered during the summer, through a variety of low cost field trips out of town and activities inside Ponoka. The Youth Centre has revamped its summer programs this year and is excited to offer week-long camps and day field trip options. The summer camps gives kids a chance to learn new skills, make new friends and participate in a variety of fun and engaging activities. This group has been able to engage youths in a way that allows them to have fun while being in a safe environment. The Youth Centre also holds a Race for Kids fundraiser each year to support local youth programs. Hundreds of kids access the PYC’s programming every year and it shows no sign of slowing down.

Racquetball, squash and wallyball Most people don’t realize it, but under the stands of the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex are two racquetball courts. One of the courts is marked to allow for a solid game of squash and both are outfitted with hooks for nets to allow teams to play wallyball, a sport that is similar to volleyball and uses the walls as part of the play. Ice sports The Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex boasts two ice surfaces and updated locker rooms for visiting teams and is home to the Junior B Stampeders hockey team. If curling is more your speed, the town also offers a six-sheet curling rink to keep folks busy. Nearby Gull Lake is a much-used amenity for winter fishing (or summer swim activities). Indoor swimming Families make good use of the 25-metre salt-water swimming pool at the Ponoka Aquaplex, which is complete with kiddy pool, sauna and hot tub. There is also a 12-foot deep tank with diving board, climbing wall and a rope swing. FCSS sponsors free family night swims often throughout the year. Golf courses Ponoka hosts two amazing golf courses. The Ponoka Golf Club is found on the eastern side of town nestled along the Battle River and boasts 18 holes for golf lovers. The club has been home to several important Alberta Golf amateur challenges.

The Wolf Creek Golf Resort is 10 minutes south of Ponoka on Highway 2A and houses two 18-hole courses. It mirrors old Scottish golf courses and sits on an ancient lakebed that provides challenging hills for golfers. Farmers Market In the summer the curling rink is the ideal location for the Farmers Market, open every Wednesday morning in the summer and open even more during the Ponoka Stampede.

Local farmers market brings variety to the table Itâ€™s all about the variety at what has become a staple in Ponoka. The Ponoka Farmers Market, which opens in May and runs into September, hosts a number of vendors each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Depending upon the time of year, there are some unique crafters and their creations alongside homebased businesses selling an array of jewellery, products to clean or use in the home. Additionally, there are the usual baked goods and other goodies that can be had as well as meats, eggs, fruits and vegetables available when in season. Now while local vendors make up the majority of tables, some come from east central and southern Alberta plus from as far away as British Columbia. The weekly market does ramp up a bit, running for three days during the last week in June as part of the many events held when the Ponoka Stampede is underway. There is one other time of the year that the market operates and that is the annual Christmas market

that goes in early December at the Ponoka Legion. The market also has a concession, complete with coffee and seating, along with some other food vendors available during the summer season. There is also another option for both vendors and customers. The Ponoka Community Market operates on Mondays from 3 to 7 p.m. downtown near the corner of 49 Avenue and 51 Street.

Calnash, the centre of ag in Ponoka One of the busiest and best indoor venues for agricultural and other events in Alberta is right here in Ponoka. The Calnash Ag Event Centre, operated by the Ponoka Ag Event Centre Society (PAECS) and located on the south side of town, has established itself as the premier facility for hosting rodeo, barrel racing and a wide variety of agriculture-based events. The facility plays host to annual events such as the Alberta Barrel Racing Association finals, the Alberta High School Rodeo finals, winter barrel racing and team roping series, regional 4-H shows and the Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive. There’s hardly a weekend that the centre isn’t busy and every year the operation continues to see growth. Among the additional events are the Vault Canada national championship, show jumping clinics and competitions plus automotive sales and private corporate rentals. The private rental market is seeing phenomenal growth, with the centre recently hosting more than $1 million in agricultural equipment for a Regina, SK based giant in the farm implement world as well as a showcase for clients and dealers of an internationally known crop and animal science leader. “We have always had a very diverse number of events. It’s just that many of them, the public just doesn’t get to see,” explained Calnash’s event coordinator Joyce Vold. “Just in the past several months, we’ve had four farm equipment events and other trade shows that were invitation only.” In fact, the Calnash has been so busy lately, there has been very little down time for the facility.

Ponoka Festival of Trees improves hospital services The Festival of Trees, an annual holiday event powered by Ponoka’s strong community spirit and sense of giving, will be held November 14 to 17, 2019 at the Stagecoach Saloon at the Ponoka Stampede grounds. The event is a major fundraiser for the Ponoka and District Health Foundation with the hopes that it will continue to grow each year. The four day event in 2019 will include the Opening Night Gala and Auction, Seniors Candy Cane Coffee, Ladies Wine Night, Family Fun Day and Beef ‘n’ Beer Fest. There will also be a Gift Shop offering a variety of gifts and Christmas items to purchase. An open house of the viewing of the decorated trees happens throughout the weekend. The Ponoka Festival of Trees had its first year in 2014 and raised $59,500. Over the past five years nearly $500,000 has been raised and donated to the Ponoka and District Health Foundation. This year, the PDHF has taken over the co-ordination and implementation of the event and hired an event co-ordinator, Charlotte Winters. Charlotte is excited to bring new ideas to the festival and encourages community involvement to help the festival to grow and continue to thrive. All funds raised will be used to enhance and sustain quality health care in the community, supporting the areas of greatest need at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre.

Ponoka Learning Centre - CAC Ponoka now boasts a brand new 5,000 square foot learning centre with post-secondary education, located in the Ponoka Civic Building. The learning centre shares a space with the Ponoka Jubilee Library. The learning centre is one of four Campus Alberta Central (CAC) locations (the others being in Drummheller, Stettler and Rocky Mountain House) and also houses the Ponoka and Rimbey Adult Learning Society. CAC is a joint initiative between Olds College and Red Deer College, providing post-secondary opportunities to rural communities in Central Alberta. Most of the programs are online certificates. There are three programs that are provided in person in the Ponoka Learning Centre. Those are: Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate which runs this fall and Health Care Aide Certificate which runs this coming winter in February. Practical Nurse Diploma is the third program but has no start date yet. It is coming potentially in 2020. With the help of CAC programming, there is real potential for people to learn and grow, right in their own community.
