These last few years, his skill set and experience includes being photo director for Eco Fashion Week, an instructor at Lasalle College in Vancouver, and showcasing his Fine Art work from his travels in Asia.

ach spring for the last four years, two mallard ducks have arrived at our home to nest. Water on the liner of our in-ground pool creates a natural “pond” for the pair, and they arrive amid much fuss, squawking and splashing about. Each year we acknowledge their presence in wonder, always amazed they’ve returned to share our spring.

And spring is here! Birds are singing, the trees are budding, the grass has turned green and everyone has a jump in their step. It’s a perfect time to launch a new idea, offer a new outlook, view the world around us with fresh eyes.

Welcome to bijou! I’ve been struggling with how to write a welcome for an idea that has taken over two years to culminate. It started as a seed and has blossomed and grown with much nurturing. In fact, the idea germinated many moons ago as we talked to people and groups about the lifestyle in our beautiful communities. There is so much to celebrate in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, two communities that are part of the thriving metropolis of the Lower Mainland, but offer unique ways of living. This place is special. It has been the home of the Katzie First Nation and Kwantlen First Nation for over 10,000 years. As we brainstormed the idea of bringing a magazine to life, we found inspiration in our mountains and rivers, lakes and natural beauty around us — as well as the vibrancy and energy of the North Fraser corridor that has kept generations living here.

After many months of trying out name after name, the turning point happened. A word was spoken and explained and, somehow, it just fit. We tried it on — talking to local residents and businesses, non-profits and community groups — and they loved it. And so it happened: bijou was born. As I sit in my backyard, watching the mallard ducks with the sun setting over the diamond-shaped Golden Ears mountain, I can’t help but be in awe. Each day the mountain changes colour, depending on the sun and how it rises or sets. Like the natural beauty of this area, a bijou (‘beZhoo) is something that is delicate, elegant or highly prized, like a jewel. And indeed, this magazine will reflect the North Fraser in all its gleaming glory. Bijou will present a wealth of stories and images, celebrating the people, the passions and the hidden spots of this bountiful, lavish and natural place we call home. It’ll be a fine-tuned exploration of artists, authors, musicians, politicians, entrepreneurs and farmers — all the people who create the fabric of this diverse community. We represent two communities that are growing and evolving, yet continue to hold small-town values. In bijou’s pages you will find food, wine, anecdotes, events, homes, history and even pets. Most importantly bijou is about the North Fraser communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows — and it’s for these communities. It’s a place to meet your neighbours. Bijou opens the doors to new worlds — worlds that exist right here in our backyards. Join us as we tour beautiful houses and heritage-rich buildings and farms; visit artists’ studios; hike through parks and meander along trails. Explore bursting gardens and savour local foods and wines. Our burgeoning farm-to-table fare is bringing newcomers to our region more than ever before. We will also uncover history and talk books, travel and pets. We invite you to engage with us. Share your stories. Let us know what or who inspires you. We want to hear about it. This has been a huge team effort and I’m so grateful to everyone travelling with us on this exciting journey. Local booksellers recommend favourites across age groups and genres

hose who love to read are always on the hunt for the next great book to rest on their bedside table or devour immediately. With four bookstores in the community, Bijou decided to ask the experts for their current favourite reads. In these recommendations, readers of all ages will find diversity, entertainment and fun. Shari Craig, manager of Black Bond Books is tickled with a picture book by Ryan T. Higgins called Mother Bruce. The book is part of Higgins’ series of Bruce the bear books, but in this one, Bruce is looking for ingredients for a recipe and ends up with more than he bargained for. “He finds eggs and they are gosling eggs. As he heats them they hatch and they think he’s mom,” she says. “I absolutely love it, I love the illustrations. They are definitely for the kids, but it’s also about the parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle who’s reading it.” While Bruce tries everything to be rid of the goslings, nothing works and, in the end, he warms up to them. “The illustrations really do make this book as well as the story,” Shari says. “It’s an easy one that you can just pick up. It’s great for everybody.” Over at Ken’s Bookcase, owner Ken Carlson is a fan of espionage, adventure-style books and recommended those from Tom Clancy for people looking for high-action suspense. “It’s the action and a bit of military thrown in,” he says. “It’s something I normally read.” Asked how he helps people in his used book shop find their next great read, and determine if Tom Clancy is for them, Ken suggests they check out the blurb on the back. “I’d tell them to read the back to see if it interests them,” he notes.

Of course Ken is also available to share his opinions on books as well. Bean Around Books features a wide range of new books from BCbased authors and used selections. Barista Ryan Ferg likes poetry books and one he’s been reading lately is Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. “Rupi Kaur makes a lot of really good poetry books. I’ve read quite a few of them,” he says. “But I do want to read more of them, they are so good.” The book has what Ryan describes as “sketchy art” for each poem and he also likes the relatability of it and the fact that the book goes through the stages of grief. “It’s one of my favourite books, to be honest,” he says. In Pitt Meadows, another store that carries both local author new books and used books, is Tomes and Tales. Owner Carmen Jones suggests the book Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King and his son Owen King. “The book is about women who fall asleep and they are put into a cocoon and the men can’t function,” she says. “They can’t deal with it. They do very bad things, the world goes to pot because the women don’t wake up.” While she normally reads young adult and historical fiction, the Kings’ book captured her. “I just really liked how different it was and how it made me think about how important women are in this society and how men really can’t live without us,” she says. “It’s a scary book.” Pick the closest bookstore and find a new favourite read by chatting with one of these people who love the written word.

Bijou is excited to introduce in each issue someone who is making a difference in the local food scene by creating less waste for our planet, using fresh, seasonal ingredients or, perhaps, focusing on farm-to-table recipes. We are happy to introduce Karley Derosia to the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows communities. Born and raised locally, she is a yoga instructor at Oxygen Yoga & Fitness, and she recently received her certification as a Registered Holistic NutritionistTM. Read more about her below.

arley Derosia has found her passion — helping those around her have a different relationship with food, specifically plantbased foods. Her journey with food over the years has been a roller coaster of sorts; however, one thing that has never changed is how much she enjoys creating new dishes, trying new baking combinations or cooking to some good tunes. Since becoming a vegetarian 15 years ago, Karley has experimented with many styles of eating. However, it was when she became a vegan two years ago that she launched her popular online Instagram account @cleaneatsbykarl.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl Ingredients: 1 cup frozen strawberries 2 cups frozen banana 1 cup ice 1/2 to 1 cup plant milk 1 scoop plant protein powder (optional) 1 tsp good quality vanilla extract 1 Tbsp beet powder Rawnola: 1 cup pitted Medjool dates 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut 1 cup organic rolled oats Directions: First, combine all Rawnola ingredients in a high-speed blender and pulse until combined. Set aside. (This will make multiple servings; store in the fridge or even roll into energy balls.) Rinse your blender and add all of the smoothie ingredients. Begin with a small amount of plant milk and add gradually as needed while blending at a low speed in order to keep the texture thick like ice cream. Transfer to a bowl, top with Rawnola and whatever else your heart desires!

Everyday objects discarded as waste are reimagined into remarkable works of contemporary art and sculpture in The Art of Upcycling at the Pitt Meadows Art Gallery. This year’s exhibit hopes to raise awareness about excess plastic waste that ends up in the oceans. Pieces include a 2D map sewn together with recycled plastics and fabrics, beautiful jewellery hand-crafted from reclaimed plastics along the Pacific Rim shores and playful sculptures created from a variety of upcycled materials. Beautiful Oil-Free Beet Hummus Ingredients: 1-2 cups soaked, cooked and cooled chickpeas (or 1 can low sodium, organic chickpeas, drained and rinsed) 1 medium baked, cooled and peeled beet 2 cloves crushed garlic 3 Tbsp to 1/4 cup runny tahini Juice of 1 1/2 fresh lemons A pinch of good quality sea salt A splash of water for consistency Directions: Preheat oven to 375°F and scrub beet clean. Place beet in tinfoil and evenly wrap it, sealing the edges. Baking time will vary depending on the size of the beet, strength of oven, etc. Check at 45 minutes; a fork should easily pierce the beet. Remove from oven, allow to cool until you’re able to handle it, and then peel off the skin. Combine all of the hummus ingredients in a high speed blender or food processor and blend until super smooth. (The longer, the better.) This hummus is amazing in salad wraps (pictured here), with raw veggies, on top of a Buddha Bowl. The options are endless! Store in the fridge.

HOME SWEET, CUSTOM HOME The Loewens have been building high-end custom homes in Maple Ridge for 25 years. And they’re truly living the dream.

t’s not often your homebuilder ends up being your neighbour, your dinner guest and your vacation companion, but that’s what frequently happens when Kent and Brigitte Loewen build one of their custom luxury homes. “A lot of our clients are now our best friends,” says Kent, who runs Ridge Dream Homes in Maple Ridge, where he was born and raised. “We’re so hands-on when we’re doing these custom homes, we spend hours together every day.” The Loewens have been building high-end custom homes for 25 years, with their focus currently in Grant Hill Estates, where they have built seven homes, and have one lot left to go. “The one I’m just starting is 8,000 square feet for a local business owner,” Kent says. “I built for them six years ago and now they want another house. Usually people build a house like that and they stay there until it’s time to downsize. But these clients found a nice view lot and chose us to build their next dream home as well.” Kent, who started his career as an architectural and structural draftsman before moving into homebuilding, oversees the builds with his son as site supervisor and a team of tradespeople that he’s been working with for 20 years. Brigitte handles the design through her company Dare to Dream Interior Decor and Home Consulting. And they live right where they work in a home they built two years ago.

“We use it as our Grant Hill Estates show home,” Brigitte says. “It’s prairie-style architecture on the outside and more contemporary on the inside with a bit of a modern edge — no curves, lots of straight angles, clean lines, barn doors, glass railings instead of wrought iron — but very inviting and warm.” Just down the street live many of their clients. “I’m on my deck looking at four houses I just built,” Kent says, adding that many builders would not take the risk of living among clients and having people “knocking on the door” with complaints. “I’m surrounded by my clients. We have dinner and drinks together. And if someone needs something fixed — it’s great. That’s what we enjoy: making people happy. We don’t cut corners, and we’re doing everything right, so there are never any major issues. We do every house like it’s our own house.”

A home like no other Just as their relationship with clients is different than with most builders, so too are their homes. You won’t get a cookie-cutter house when you work with Kent and Brigitte. The couple specializes in building custom homes, with an emphasis on quality and innovation. They have completed homes with indoor golf simulator rooms, suspended slab theatre rooms, home automation, some great, cooled wine cellars and displays, NanaWall custom folding door systems, and transom glass over interior doors for added light in rooms. “We’re trendsetters,” says Kent. “We’re always trying to be completely different and design one-of-a-kind elements. Every house you go into, everyone’s doing the same trends, whereas each house we design is totally different, and that’s what sets us apart.

We try to be the first people doing it here, like very fancy ceilings, travertine and wood staircases, or different window colours such as black or grey windows, which are big now. We were doing black windows eight years ago and colour is the trend now, so we have our manufacturer doing different colours for us.” Brigitte works with clients to envision both the exterior and interior designs. She meets with clients at the framing stage to ensure their vision comes to life. “We get to be close with clients to get to know their likes and dislikes. I try to use their

tastes in the design, and incorporate as much of their inspirations and wish lists as possible into their budget.” They’re also on-site immediately when changes are needed on-the-fly. “A client we just built for in McFadden Creek decided the ensuite bathroom was too small when we were framing it all up. We were there for them right away to make revisions to turn it into a true spa ensuite.”

Supporting local businesses Sourcing from local vendors and suppliers is as important to them as being close to their clients. Their tradespeople have been with them since their early days. “Our electrician has been working with us for 25 years,” Kent says. “Most of them have been with us for 20 years. We call them and they’re there, which is very important when things are busy. My guys will drop what they’re doing if, for example, someone has a leak in their house. You need to be there instantly. We are only as good as our trades.” They also like to keep it local when it comes to their vendors. “Our flooring guy is now our neighbour,” Brigitte says. “Our cabinetmaker is in Maple Ridge, our stair railing gentleman is local and our tile setter is from Maple Ridge.” At this point, the Loewens only take on two home builds per year to ensure the quality of the end result. “We don’t advertise, people just come to us. I’m already booked up for this year and turning people away,” Kent says. But for this builder-design dream team, what’s most important in this business is doing good work with good people. And at the end of the day, it’s about enjoying the fruits of their labour in a community they’ve helped to build.

rom dancing at age two to building her identity through weightlifting, Jess Nadine’s fitness and self-empowerment journey has been lifelong. This Maple Ridge resident, who went to school in the area and loves the local mountains, is now an online influencer and coach, helping a global community of women to feel empowered one burpee at a time. Jessica Nadine Callegaro, or “Jess Nadine” as she is known online, has been through a lot. She had a traumatic childhood, lost her mother and has experienced her fair share of heartbreak. Fitness has given her a sense of control amid the chaos. It’s been a constant in her life that she’s been able to rely upon and has helped her grow into the person she is today. Part of that evolution has involved Jess leaving her career as a healthcare counsellor to become an online coach. “I never anticipated being a coach,” said Jess. “Initially, I wanted to keep that to myself. However, now I want to teach others how to feel empowered.”

Jess’s online coaching program is called The Progress Project. It’s an online monthly membership community that gives women access to progressive workouts, mindset tools, recipes and most importantly, a private Facebook community. “This is where the real magic happens. Women from around the world come together with the same goal of making progress,” explained Jess. Unlike more conventional weight loss or fitness groups, Jess’s group is not focused on sharing how many pounds members have lost each week. Instead, she has women begin her program by participating in a three-day mindset module. They are encouraged to become self-aware, which entails having a better understanding of who they are and why they react to things in the way they do. Women also set goals, both long-term and short-term. Part of the goal-setting process is asking a series of questions. For example, why do you want to achieve a particular goal? During weekly check-ins with Jess’s Facebook group, members share their struggles and successes on their way to achieving their goals. New Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat program cultivates better understanding of ecosystems

t a time when connecting with nature has arguably never been more important, Maple Ridge’s Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre has added more good reasons to engage in a little forest bathing. Its new programming, entitled Wild and Immersive, is creating opportunities for the community to experience the beauty of nature while exploring local ecosystems, diving into soil science and getting some experience in wilderness survival tactics. “We cover different topics and make them engaging and fun,” says Victoria Farahbakhchian, education coordinator with the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, which is part of Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre. “For kids we do a little classroom teaching but mostly applied learning. We measure trees or learn the rock cycle through a game of tag. The older kids go on a scavenger hunt and have to answer riddles to unlock secret boxes. Adult groups can choose from a list of modules.”

Last year was the first year for Wild and Immersive, and this year it’s slated to bring in 4,000 registrants on top of Loon Lake’s typical 23,000 annual campers — many of whom come with their own programming.

“Every group is different and customized,” says facilities manager Karim Farahbakhchian (Victoria’s father), who’s been working with Loon Lake visitors since 1994. “Corporate groups come with their own agenda, and they often bring their own guest speakers. If they want something all planned out that focuses on team building, they contact Pinnacle Pursuits, which offers a rope course, rock climbing wall and canoeing. If they want something educational and immersive in nature, they can use Wild and Immersive’s programming.” In addition to Wild and Immersive, the younger Farahbakhchian, who joined Loon Lake two years ago after completing her Master of Science degree in Ecological Restoration at SFU and BCIT, has also launched youth overnight and day camps. “Themes range from forest sciences to outdoor adventure and environmental leadership,” she says. “We’re giving youth the tools to learn and care about the outdoors. We do day camps, Pro-D day camps, overnight camps, and we’ve also set up field camps for older grades.”

An education in silviculture (by nature) Of course, Loon Lake has been educating young people in forestry since the 1940s. Situated within UBC’s Malcolm Knapp Research

Forest, the Loon Lake camp was established in 1949 by UBC Professor Malcolm Knapp, whose vision was to have an outdoor lab and classroom. “We have pictures of him lecturing students out in the forest,” says Paul Lawson, director of UBC research forests based at Loon Lake. “He started lobbying UBC and the government to set up a research forest and convinced the government to give UBC the land. It was deeded to the university and part of that was the construction of Loon Lake camp to house UBC students. It had a sawmill and they built the buildings out of the logs they cut. When I went into forestry in the 1970s, it was still a collection of log cabins with one bathroom for 100 people, which was the standard of the mid-20th century for a bush camp.” In the early 2000s, a camp rebuild was initiated. “I came back in 1999, and we had a sizeable business based on group rentals, but the facilities were worn out by then and the original cabins were something out of the Stone Age,” Lawson says. “We started trying to envision what the camp could look like.” An agreement with the Canadian Cancer Society to house Camp Goodtimes at Loon Lake enabled that vision to come to life — although the process of rebuilding took over a decade.

“All the original buildings are gone and we now have modern buildings with fire alarms,” Lawson laughs. The new facilities include a dining hall, which seats 180 people, meeting rooms and a gym for kids. The resort’s 170 beds include 70 dormitory-style beds for youth, 40 hotel room-style beds for adults and 70 lodge-style beds that can be set up either way. “We can accommodate adult groups of up to 90, kids groups of up to 120 and mixed groups of up to 175,” Lawson says. Today Loon Lake continues to be used for UBC forestry field schools and kids’ camps like Camp Goodtimes, in addition to hosting church groups, school field trips, band camps, yoga retreats and even family reunions.

Fostering a love for forests While its new facilities are certainly a draw, it’s the natural environment that truly is the spotlight at Loon Lake. “There’s a lot to look at for people who are into the outdoors,” Lawson says. “The diversity of the lakes and streams here are quite unique. There are trails that go around the lake. We offer access to parts of the research forest as well, and we’re adding to our collection of interpretive trails. The lake is a swimming lake and has docks, canoes and paddleboards.”

And, with the addition of its Wild and Immersive program, Loon Lake is aiming to “offer more things for people to do when they get here,” Lawson says. “We’re here to basically help people learn about nature.” “The worst thing that could happen is that people come up here and leave without learning,” says Victoria Farahbakhchian. “Our goal is that when people leave, they’ve gained a deeper appreciation of the natural environment.”

anielle Swift didn’t know what she wanted to be. Growing up in Maple Ridge, she’d always enjoyed creating art, but she chose to study English literature at university. “I think there was a fear of actually pursuing something that I was so passionate about,” she says now. It wasn’t until she was in her 20s that she found the courage to follow her dreams. She enrolled in art school and assumed she would become a painter. But after getting the chance “to dabble in a little bit of everything,” she “absolutely fell in love with sculpting.” Swift now works full-time as sculptor, and her pieces have been shown in places such as The ACT Art Gallery in Maple Ridge and the Art Vancouver annual art fair.

She explains, “You’ve got the weight and the industrialness of it, but it’s got this really beautiful fragility to it as well.”

At first, Swift used concrete in her sculptures primarily because it was cheap. But as she learned about it and used it more, she grew to love how it could be solid and strong but at the same time show cracks.

After people see her huge concrete sculptures of the female form, they are often surprised to meet Swift. They assume that anyone creating such imposing pieces in the male-dominated art world must be male. In particular, one of her series that shows bound female figures always provokes different reactions based on the viewer’s assumptions about gender. Swift enjoys playing with notions of how women “feel bound to certain stereotypes or certain expectations.” Asked why she was initially attracted to sculpture over painting, Swift ponders for a moment before praising her chosen medium. “It’s so tactile,” she says. “There’s so many possibilities.” She feels the two-dimensional aspect of painting is limiting, while sculpture is freeing. That feeling of freedom is what Swift likes best about being an artist. “The possibilities are endless. I can make anything,” she says, admitting that in the early days of her career, having so many options seemed overwhelming at times.

Now, however, after 13 years as an artist, she finds the freedom “an exciting idea more than anything.” Less exciting are some of the day-to-day realities of being an artist: locating an affordable studio to rent, finding reputable galleries to exhibit the art, fielding the inevitable questions from friends and family about plans to get a “real” job. Swift has definitely lucked out with her studio at 1000 Parker in East Vancouver. For one thing, the rent is reasonable. More importantly, the building houses a thriving community of artists. “It’s a huge hub. There’s over 200 studios in the building, and everybody does something different. You’ve got jewellery-makers. You’ve got shoemakers, hat-makers, people doing furniture. You’ve got painters. You’ve got sculptors, printmakers, photographers.” Being surrounded by so many like-minded creatives is inspiring. “We all help each other out,” she says. Swift’s strong sense of community makes her want to give back in different ways. Over the years, she’s taught

several art classes for children in Maple Ridge. Although it was sometimes apparent that not all of the students wanted to be there, the one or two budding artists in each class made it worthwhile. Swift enjoyed nurturing that spark. Recently, she built a chair for a charity auction in Maple Ridge. The chair had deer antlers coming out of the top, deer hooves on the bottoms of the legs and a fake-fur pillow on the seat. It was auctioned off at The Love of Youth fundraiser for the Youth Wellness Centre, which offers services for substance abuse, mental health and more. Swift calls it “one of those programs that is so important to have in every community.”

The deer chair inspired Swift to start working on more chairs inspired by different animals. She’s also doing “a series of figures on big fir planks.” In addition to sculpting, she dabbles with printmaking and has other things she wants to try, such as mixing videos in with her sculptures. She’s also working on some smaller pieces, such as “little plants with little spines in test tubes”— and, unlike her huge sculptures, they don’t require a U-Haul to move them around. Asked if she has hobbies outside of her work in the studio, Swift at first says “no,” admitting to spending long hours on each piece. “I sometimes end up getting hyper-focused on a really small thing or area, and I can spend two days just working on some small [detail] that nobody’s going to notice except me.” But after thinking about it for a moment, she says she recently started trail running in places like Golden Ears Provincial Park. “I didn’t expect to love it, but I became kind of addicted to it.” And she can pinpoint exactly what she loves about running through a forest: the feeling of freedom—the same feeling she gets in her studio as she dreams of her next creation.

On a mini-vacation spent in the area last spring, we stayed at the new and very approachable Tofino Resort + Marina, located on the edge of Tofino; the exclusive Wickaninnish Inn on Tofino’s Chesterman Beach, the cosy cabins at Ucluelet’s Reef Point Cottages; and the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort, right on the water’s edge, also in Ucluelet. We went whale watching with Ocean Outfitters in Tofino. Each time we visit the area, we discover new and exciting things. But here’s a rundown of the “best of” our spring mini-vacation:

Best morning coffee:

Sitting in the hot tub, coffee in hand, on the balcony at Reef Point Cottages was an “ahh” moment. The sun shone on water droplets hanging from the trees and the mist rose off the sea. A true meeting of rainforest and wild Pacific ocean.

Best All Day Breakfast:

The Blue Room in Ucluelet was packed with locals — always a good sign — and our mid-day breakfast was delish.

Best fount of information:

Brodie at Ocean Outfitters offered a treasure-trove of information as he guided us on a whale-watching tour. I was already impressed by the breadth of his knowledge about the area’s history and folklore, marine life and current events. But listening to him give a scientific explanation of how tides work (not a simple answer) definitely upped my impression.

Best discovery:

The Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet! This nine-kilometre trail weaves along the shoreline, featuring truly dramatic views of the wild West Coast. It’s well-maintained, easy to navigate and has a collection of informative signs along the way. Some beautiful trees in the Ancient Cedar Grove are easily accessed from the main road, but be sure to walk out to the bluffs as well.

Best appetizer:

Hands down, nothing beats the trendy Wolf in the Fog’s Potato Crusted Oysters. This explosion of flavour is incomparable. Eating at the Wolf is a must-do in Tofino. It’s hip, fun and has an amazing menu from simple to obscure food, and all with an emphasis on sharing.

Best small plate:

The fire-roasted cauliflower and hummus dish at Tofino Resort + Marina’s 1909 Kitchen is to die for. And the bonus? You’re sitting on the edge of a busy waterfront marina as you savour it.

Best bathtub:

Every bathtub at the Wickaninnish Inn has a sea view. In our room, we could approach the two-person tub via a heated floor; use a remote control to lift or drop the window blind; light a candle — beautifully set in a granite rock — and have plenty of space to rest our port-filled glasses.

Best place to bring a family:

Our cabin at Reef Point Cottages had two levels, with two bedrooms (one with a balcony) and a bathroom upstairs, a full kitchen, living area (with pull-out couch) and a second bathroom on the ground level. Plus there’s a hot tub and dining table on a full-sized deck at the back and a barbecue out front. Bring the kids!

Best beer:

Tofino Brewing Company recently moved from a tiny space into a brand new, swanky building with soaring ceilings, a massive, L-shaped tasting bar, seats and tables, and a small snack menu (try the salmon bites). And everyone seems to bring a dog! We’re not usually stout fans but the super-flavourful Kelp Stout topped our “best of” the beer list.

Best window seat: This is a tough one. There was the stunning beach view from our room at The Wick and the mesmerizing marine activity outside our table at 1909 Kitchen. But the drama of waves crashing on rocks at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort’s Float Bar and Lounge was a sight to behold.

Best dessert:

Well, it was the only dessert we had — but that fact alone is testament to its irresistibility. The Float’s vegan chocolate cake — dairy, gluten and nut free — with coconut mousse and caramelized ginger, was the “icing on the cake” to our final dinner of the trip.

Best wildlife sighting:

The humpback whale, otters and sea lions spotted on our Ocean Outfitters trip were stunning. But on the Wild Pacific Trail, we had stopped to enjoy a vista of crashing waves on rocks when we spotted an eagle sitting in a tree at eye level, just a few metres away. We watched it for awhile until it lifted off with a swish and flew to another tree, stunning us with the breadth of its wingspan. Later, on another portion of the trail we sat on a bench and watched whales swimming by just offshore. Magic!

Best patio:
