Downtown and the Platzl The Platzl is a family-friendly, pedestrian, shopping and dining area, spotted with perennial gardens, mature trees, flowers and a water feature for the kids. It features a gazebo for live music performances, of which there are many throughout the summer. It is ground zero for many of Kimberley’s summer festivals. It is filled with shops unique to Kimberley. You won’t find chain stores here, only family-run, small businesses that offer all kinds of wares to enhance your trip to Kimberley or provide a few souvenirs of your visit. The restaurants feature a great variety of cuisine, and outdoor patios so you can enjoy the Platzl’s ambiance while you dine.

Along the river Just a short walk from the Platzl, you will find some lovely landscaped areas along the newly rehabbed Mark Creek. Recently upgraded from a concrete flume installed during the 1950s for flood control, the areas along Mark Creek are now much more attractive and offer some great little swimming holes, kayaking and fishing spots just minutes from downtown. Take a walk along the banks of Mark Creek or just sit and enjoy the cool on a hot summer day. You can also access the river in Marysville, along the boardwalk to Marysville Falls.

If you like challenging yourself to your physical limits, Kimberley offers a selection of adventure races from a triathlon to an ultra marathon. There are four big events scheduled for 2019, beginning in June.
June 8 9 2019 Wasa Lake triathlon The Wasa Lake Triathlon is a longstanding tradition and is held a beautiful Wasa Lake, just north of Kimberley. It features a Standard Triathlon and a Sprint Triathlon, as well as races for kids. It all takes place amid spectacular mountain views. A full weekend of triathlon excitement for the whole family. Round The Mountain Sunday, June 23rd, 2019 Billed as Kimberley’s premier multi-discipline adventure event, the Round the Mountain Festival has grown each year since its inception. It offers hiking, running or mountain biking around North Star Mountain. Hosted by the Kimberley Trails Society, the Kootenay Orienteering Club, and the Kootenay Freewheelers’ Cycling Club, the spectacular annual Round The Mountain Festival showcases Kimberley’s beautiful and diverse trail network and features the Round The Mountain Route. Participants can choose from a variety of four hiking, running, and mountain biking challenges around North Star Mountain, plus kids races, live music, and food and drinks will provide fun and entertainment for everyone. All events start and finish at the Kimberley Nordic Centre.

First Saturday Kimberley’s Annual Arts Culture and Heritage begins its 6th season of monthly festivals from July to October in the Kimberley Platzl area — the first Saturday of each month. Live entertainment, art market, artisans at work, outdoor concerts, children’s activities, hand’s on demonstrations are a part of each Saturday. Other activities; pancake breakfast, staircase challenge, silent auction, Dessert Tea, hikes in the nature park, paddle battle, and Oktoberfest, with strudel eating, pretzel toss, barmaid race, beer brats and pretzels, accordion’s and Oomph papa complement each of the First Saturdays. Musicians and performers from throughout the valley provide the music from 12-4pm in the afternoon in the Platzl and outdoor concerts held in the parking lot at Centre 64 in July and August.

It’s time to Get Festy!
Kimberley’s legendary JulyFest is scheduled for July 19 through 21 this year. JulyFest is a weekend long celebration of sports, family and fun. From the Canadian Bocce Championships to the giant JulyFest Soccer Tournament to the parade, to the high school reunions to the music, to the longboard race, it’s a weekend with something for everyone. The nerve center, as always, is the bocce pits, located at Centennial Park. Here you can watch the huge bocce competition all day and into the evening, listen to live music and enjoy refreshments. All around town, every sports field has an event. No matter what time of day, you can catch a soccer game. Don’t miss the finals on Sunday at Purcell Park in Marysville. This is high level soccer. Bocce finals are on Sunday too, as well as the Sullivan Challenge Longboard Race.

Weekend operation begins on May 18, 2019. Daily operations will start July 1st 2019 and continue until into September.

The arts in Kimberley Kimberley’s arts community is vibrant and thriving. Governed by the Kimberley Arts Council - Centre 64, home base is Centre 64, a theatre/gallery arts centre. Recreation There is no doubt that there is a wide variety of outdoor recreation in the mountains surrounding Kimberley, but there are plenty of facilities in town as well. On Rotary Drive alone you will find a skate park, along with a bike park, the Kimberley Aquatic Centre, the Civic Centre arena —which includes a year round indoor walking track — the Rotary Splash Park, curling club, tennis courts and ball fields. There’s also a very active gymnastics club, with its own facility.

Kimberley Veterans’ Memorial Park
Where once an old auto service station sat on one of Kimberley’s most visible lots, there is now the Kimberley Veterans Memorial Park. A beautiful new cenotaph and many memorial plaques tell the story of Kimberley’s veterans and those who still serve. It’s a great place to stop for lunch and take a moment to reflect.

Kimberley Heritage Museum and Public Library
Sharing one building at the west end of the Platzl, both the Kimberley Heritage Museum and the Kimberley Public Library are open year round. This year is the 40th anniversary of the Kimberley Heritage Society, which opened the Museum in 1980. The Library is full service with both digital and hard copy collections. Open Tuesdays through Saturdays year round.

Spirit Rock Climbing Centre
Visit Spirit Rock Climbing Centre in the Platzl. Spirit Rock has 6,000 square feet of roped climbing, reaching heights of 50 feet and a 16 foot high ‘top out’ bouldering area to keep you and your family entertained for hours. Spirit Rock is kid friendly and a great place to spend an afternoon.

There’s mini golf and then there’s the Riverside Mini Putt. This is a state of the art putting course, located at Riverside Campground. The course is a miniature 18-hole course with water features and elevation changes. Not to be missed and affordable fun for the whole family.

Kimberley’s Cominco Gardens have long been the place to go for wedding and graduation photos, and they are a can’t miss spot for tourists as well. Originally planted to showcase the wonders of Cominco’s Elephant Brand fertilizers in 1927, the gardens feature 50,000 blossoms on five beautiful hectares near the Kimberley Health Centre.

Marysville As you enter Kimberley from the south, you will first arrive at the part of town known as Marysville. Just seven kilometres south of downtown, Marysville has a culture all its own. From Marysville Daze in June to the Kimberley Community Fall Fair in September, Marysville has a lot to offer. It is a preferred residential location for many — lower elevation means less snow. It is home to two of Kimberley’s golf courses — Bootleg Gap and the Kimberley Golf Club. There is also the eco park, with a wooden boardwalk to the wonderful Marysville Falls. Marysville has a downtown shopping area featuring local artisans, coffee shops, a neighbourhood pub, and much more, as well as trails that connect it to Kimberley proper. It’s a great place to explore on a sunny day.

Trails
For those looking for a stroll through the wilderness, Kimberley is the perfect destination. From paved walking paths to strenuous hikes up a mountain side, there is a trail for every level of fitness. The largest municipal park in British Columbia, the Kimberley Nature Park is over 840-hectares, not to mention the adjacent 200-hectare Horse Barn Valley Interpretive Forest. The two areas contain more than 50 kilometres of trails linking forested hillsides, panoramic views, ponds, streams, and trees galore. Trails are also friendly for those wishing to mountain bike, or cross country ski in the winter. There are six major access points to the Kimberley Nature Park including The Kimberley Nordic Ski Area, Higgins Street and the Kimberley Riverside Campground.

Trails The Horse Barn Valley Interpretive Forest entrance requires a drive up a forestry road that is most suitable for high-clearance vehicles. For those who enjoy cycling and inline skating, or those who are pushing a baby stroller, the pristinely paved Northstar Rails to Trails network can take you from downtown Kimberley all the way to Cranbrook. The Northstar Rails to Trails also has several access points, with the main trailhead at Rotary Drive and Archibald Street near the Civic Centre Arena. This point also connects you via a trail extension (not paved) to the Platzl and downtown area.
The Kimberley Trails Society has developed numerous mountain bike trails such as the Bootleg Biking Trails. Check out the Lois Creek Trails, the Nordic Trails, the Magic Line and more. Maps can be found online at kimberleytrails.org

Camping The whole world loves to camp, and when you’re surrounded by mountains and water, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly campground or a remote backcountry getaway, Kimberley and the surrounding area boasts a wide variety of camping options all season long. Kimberley Riverside Campground is perfect for those that want to stay close to town, have an RV, or want to camp with their family. Just a ten minute drive from town, the campground is located on St. Mary Lake Rd. Open from early April to mid October, the Kimberley Riverside Campground has both Mini Golf and Disc Golf Courses, free hot spot internet access, a resort pool, a playground, and is close to both the Kimberley Nature Park and fly fishing along the St. Mary River. Not only is Kimberley Riverside Campground close to town, but there are many other nearby campsites including Wasa Lake, Lazy Lake, Skookumchuck Creek, Whiteswan Provincial Park, and more. If you’re up for the drive to Whiteswan, you might consider dropping by the natural Lussier Hot Springs, which are located near the park entrance at km 17.5 on the Whiteswan Forest Service Road. If you’re up for a more rugged, backcountry experience, hike out to the secluded Dewar Creek Hot Springs or book an overnight horse-back adventure with a local outfitter. There are endless possibilities for backcountry camping, just be sure to familiarize yourself with the access roads and hiking routes before heading out.

Explore the great outdoors Fishing Kimberley is within driving distance to a multitude of world class lakes and trout streams. Guided trips are designed for both beginners and experienced anglers, and there are a number of outfitters to choose from in Kimberley and the surrounding area. Or, you can head out on your own. The St. Mary River, which flows just south of Kimberley, is known as a high quality fishing destination. The Kootenay River and many lakes in the area also produce healthy, lively, cutthroat, rainbow, bull trout and white fish. Not far from town is HaHas Lake, where you can camp and fish all summer long.

Kimberley in the winter While Kimberley has a thousand and one year round recreation opportunities, it is at heart a ski town. With the lift just minutes from anyone’s back door, Kimberleyites strap on the skis at a very young age. The early beginnings of the Kimberley Alpine Resort date back to the 1930s, when Scandinavian employees at the Cominco Sullivan Mine began to develop the ski hill on North Star Mountain. A ski jump was added in the 1940s, with competitors soaring off the big jump to land in the parking lot of what is now Save On Foods. The City took over from the ski club in the 1970s

and continued to develop the hill, but the metamorphosis into today’s resort began in the late 1990s, when it was sold privately. Today, Kimberley Alpine Resort is owned by Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. It offers more than 80 runs and glades and the famous Purcell powder, as well as ski in ski out accommodation right on the mountain. A perfect day on the Kimberley slopes is called a Bluebird Day — bright sunshine, perfectly groomed corduroy, and a view of the whole valley in front of you. Spend the day with one of the friendly guest guides and get to know our mountain.

Kimberley in the winter If skiing is not your thing, try a hockey game. Kimberley is home to the historic Kimberley Dynamiters franchise, currently a Junior B team in the KIJHL. The Dynamiters are a perennial playoff team and the fans at the Old Barn (Kimberley Civic Centre) can really get rocking, turning the game into an experience. Also yours to enjoy in winter are the Kimberley Nordic Trails, the Kimberley Nature Park, curling, sliding, snowshoeing, fat tire biking and more. And don’t forget Flannel Fest, Kimberley’s newest winter event in February. Our winter climate is relatively mild, the snow is deep and the opportunities for fun, limitless.

Golf There is no doubt that Kimberley sits in an area that is a mecca for golfers. There are dozens of great courses within an hour or so drive of Kimberley itself. But before you venture further afield, you need to play at least one round on each of Kimberley’s three championship courses. There’s Trickle Creek on North Star Mountain, near the Kimberley Alpine Resort and all the on-hill accommodations. The Kimberley Golf Course in Marysville is the oldest course of the three and the only members course. The third course in Kimberley is Bootleg Gap, a city-owned 27 hole course, with mountain-side and river-side holes. Kimberley’s three courses are just the start of your East Kootenay golfing adventure. There are four other courses in the immediate area; Wildstone, Shadow Mountain, St. Eugene and the Cranbrook Golf Club. These four are all 20 minutes or so south of Kimberley.

Wildlife Kimberley is a city set in a wonderful natural setting with the great outdoors on your doorstep. Given its location, Kimberley also has a population of wildlife. It is entirely common to share the sidewalk with a deer, or come across a flock of wild turkeys down a back lane, or encounter a bear. The urban mule deer population has been an issue for several years and Kimberley’s mayor and council have worked hard to find ways to deal with it. One thing is firm, Kimberley will not participate in a kill cull to take the population down. Instead, a tremendous amount of work has gone into finding different methods of dealing with the resident herd. One thing visitors can keep in mind is that though these animals appear quite habituated, they are wild animals. Do not approach them, and most importantly, do not feed them. Kimberley has a bylaw against feeding deer. Wild turkeys are also becoming a more frequent sight. Again, feeding them is discouraged. Keep your garbage secure. Bears, both black and grizzly, may move through town, but if they find nothing to eat, they will move on. Coexisting with wildlife is part of life in Kimberley. Feeding them is not helping.

Nearby attractions Kimberley is located in one of the most spectacular valleys in Canada. The Rocky Mountain Trench teems with wildlife, with wild rivers and mountains. There is so much potential for adventure, from white water rafting to hiking high in the alpine to mountain biking and backcountry camping. Cranbrook, pop. 21,000, is just south of Kimberley, about a 25 minute drive on Highway 95A. You can make a stop in Cranbrook part of a circle tour. Head south to Cranbrook, then go east on Hwy 3 to the Fort Steele turnoff. You can visit the Fort Steele Heritage Town, a wonderful historic town. Ride their steam train, visit their famous Clydesdale horses, check out the townsite. And of course visit their bakery for great goodies to fuel you up.

Nearby attractions Continue north on Hwy 95 to Wasa, where you’ll find the Kootenays’ warmest lake, with great beaches. Just north of Wasa, off the White Swan Forest Service Road are the Lussier River hot springs. These natural hot pools sit right on the shore of the Lussier River and are a very popular stop with locals and tourists alike. After a visit to the hot springs, head back to Kimberley on Hwy 95A. All through the valley are access roads to the backcountry. Talk to the folks at the Visitor Centre for some ideas or have a conversation with those who work at some of Kimberley’s outdoor and adventure businesses for ideas for the best places to go.
