Boundary Bay and Centennial Beach Boundary Bay is a popular destination year-round thanks to picturesque views and many walking and cycling trails. In the summer, many people like to play in the warm, shallow water. When the tide goes out, explore the biodiversity and keep your eyes open for crabs, sand dollars, sea stars and other marine life. You may even be able to spot harbour seals in the water or grey whales on the horizon. At Centennial Beach, your family will enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Baker, a dormant volcano in Washington state. Grab a picnic, build a sand castle, take a spin out on the paddleboard or join the skimboarders. There are also on-site volleyball, tennis courts and a softball field, and be sure to visit the historic Cammidge House. There’s something here for everyone. Burns Bog and Delta Nature Reserve Burns Bog is the largest undeveloped urban land mass in all of North America. This unique ecosystem covers about 300 hectares, over 200 of which is inaccessible to the public in order to protect the resident wildlife. More than 175 species of birds and dozens of animal species call Burns Bog their home. Although most of Burns Bog is closed off to the public, visitors are welcome to come see the Delta Nature Reserve. There are three loops of boardwalks (pictured) and trails in the reserve, and a 90-minute hike takes you past a beaver dam and through both a spring meadow and a cedar grove. Delta is unique among Lower Mainland cities in that it’s comprised of three distinct communities — Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta — seperated by large swaths of agricultural land and the Burns Bog Ecological Conservation Area. Each comes with its own particular set of charms and attractions; be sure to take the time and get to know all three.
LADNER Delta was built around farming and fishing, much of it centered in Ladner. The community was founded in 1868 by brothers Thomas and William Ladner, who saw the agricultural promise of the soil and set about farming the land while harvesting fish from the Fraser River after returning from the Fraser Canyon gold rush. Though Ladner has evolved beyond a simple fishing village, the community hasn’t lost
its small-town charm. In addition to City Hall, Delta Hospital, police and fire department headquarters, and other civic institutions, Ladner’s home to many unique shops and restaurants to visit, especially in the charming Ladner Village area of town. Many notable community events take place here yearround, including the Ladner Village Market, one of the largest open-air markets in Western Canada. TSAWWASSEN Indigenous peoples have been continually using land in and around the Tsawwassen peninsula since at least 2250 BC, and Tsawwassen’s name, appropriately, comes from the Salish translation of “land by the sea.” Tsawwassen is surrounded by water on both sides, making for fantastic panoramic ocean views from many locations. Travellers heading to and from the BC Ferries terminal often make a stop at Centennial Beach to play in the warm, shallow
water. Enjoy some saltwater fishing or walks along the water in one of the sunniest places in the Lower Mainland. Tsawwassen is the least rainy community in all of Metro Vancouver and enjoys three days of sunshine for every one in the rest of the region. To celebrate this glorious gift, Tsawwassen is home to the annual Sun Festival, happening the first weekend of August. There’s lots of fun for the whole family, including the Rotary Parade (pictured), popular slo-pitch and volleyball tournaments, a car show, children’s midway, live entertainment and free outdoor movie nights. sunnytsawwassen.ca

NORTH DELTA Nestled between the Fraser River to the north, Burns Bog to the west and the city of Surrey to the east, North Delta is a vibrant community home to more than half of Delta’s population. North Delta grew out of communities that sprung up around the commercial canning industry on the Fraser River, and many places in the area, including parts of Surrey, still bear the names of those early communities and pioneers: Kennedy, Annieville, Gunderson, Norum, etc. North Delta is home to the city’s best parks, including Watershed
Park -- the biggest in Delta -- and the Delta Nature Reserve, the only publicly-accessible part of Burns Bog, North America’s largest domed peat bog. Every June, North Delta Lions Club hosts North Delta Family Day, a large parade and community festival (including the famous North Delta Lions BBQ, pictured) that attracts hundreds of families from Delta and the surrounding cities. Scott Road, Delta’s border with Surrey, is a busy thoroughfare bursting with shops and restaurants to explore, from artisanal independent businesses to big-box stores. Fun fact: Scott Road is called 120th Street on the Surrey side, and the two names are often used interchangeably.

MORE TO EXPLORE Watershed Park This is another one of Delta’s top attractions. With 11 kilometres of forested trails, visitors can choose whether they want to go on a short walk or long exploration of the park. Its flat trails (pictured) also make this a popular area for cyclists. The park includes gravel trails, footbridge crossings, interpretive signs and a promontory lookout with a clear view of Mud Bay, the northeast portion of Boundary Bay on the Canada/United States border. With a crisp stream running through the middle of the park this is a perfect spot for a peaceful picnic. 11699 Kittson Parkway | North Delta
South Delta Recreation Centre (1720 56th Street, Tsawwassen) and the North Delta Recreation Centre (11415 84 Avenue, North Delta). Adventure playgrounds are designed to re-introduce children to play on their own, while encouraging imagination and facilitating decision-making skills. Playground visitors can interact with a variety of objects that will encourage them to play, build, create, use their imagination and be adventurous and active, all while learning to assess their own risk. The adventure playground will open for the season July 2 through September 2, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Note: all people entering the adventure playground must wear closed-toed shoes. Deas Island Regional Park Located in the south arm of the Fraser River, Deas Island offers serene walks through tall cottonwood trees and the chance to explore the habitats of eagles, owls, frogs and otters. The sheltered, calm waters of Deas Slough are ideal for paddling and are home to the Deas Island Rowing Club. Bring a paddleboard or a kayak and drift along the waterway as well. On the island, you’ll find Burrvilla, a carefully restored Queen Anne-style house built in 1905, as well as the historic one-room Inverholme Schoolhouse. 6090 Deas Island Road | Delta

Bike trails Delta is home to some of the best biking in the Lower Mainland. With low elevation, cyclists can enjoy bike rides of any length throughout any of Delta’s three communities. Here are the top three places to enjoy cycling in Delta: Boundary Bay This is the perfect cycling experience for ocean lovers. Enjoy scenic sea-side views while cycling along the dikes. The trail can be accessed from the east side of Tsawwassen near the U.S. border and extends all the way to the limits of Delta, adjacent to Mud Bay. Ambitious riders can even attempt to cycle along the oceanfront from Tsawwassen all the way to the town of White Rock.
Millennium Trail One of the best ways to experience Ladner is by biking along the Millennium Trail to Deas Island. Start in the heritage fishing village of Ladner and cycle past the South Arm Marshes along the Fraser River to Deas Island Regional Park. Once there, explore the island on foot; cycling is not permitted on any of the park’s pathways.
Watershed Park Travelling through Watershed Park makes you feel like you are miles away from the city. Cyclists of all levels can enjoy up to 10 different trails. Visitors can access the park from three different locations: two on Kittson Parkway and one on Highway 10 between Scott Road/120th Street and Highway 91.
Bike Pump Tracks A bike pump track is a man-made closed circuit with berms largely made of earth on each end. Riders use the rollers and berms to “pump” speed into their bikes with minimal pedalling. Bike pump tracks are one of the fastest growing attractions in biking and can be enjoyed by cyclists of all ages and skill levels. It’s a full-body workout where cyclists learn essential riding skills in a fun environment that is low-risk. Viewing Tips
• While the majority of Burns Bog may be closed off to the public, the Delta Nature Reserve is still a great place for wildlife viewing. Watch for black-tailed deer, songbirds and several species of salamanders, to name a few. • Ladner Harbour is a great spot for viewing herons, swans, ducks, red-winged blackbirds and other feathered friends. • Check tide levels; low tide means the birds are located further away from the shore. • Explore Delta’s wildlife during quieter times, like early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society
Experience birding Delta is renowned for its bird habitats and bird viewing experiences. Millions of birds call the Delta wetlands their home every year, and approximately 250 different species of birds migrate in and out of the area along the Pacific Flyway, stopping to feed and rest during these long journeys. About 50,000 or so Dunlin spend the winter at Boundary Bay with their friends, the black-bellied plovers. Up to 100,000 snow geese migrate to Delta from Russia every fall (pictured). Visitors are treated to sightings of ducks, geese, snowbirds, songbirds, swans, herons, eagles, hawks, and owls (to name a few) throughout the year. Roberts Bank, Boundary Bay and the Fraser River Estuary rank as some of the most important birding areas in Canada. Guided walks with local experts are also available in Delta through the Reifel Bird Sanctuary or with the Birds on the Bay program.
OWL is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned animals. Looking to cool off during those hot summer days? Then head to one of the City of Delta’s outdoor pools or water spray parks. Delta has two outdoor pools, one in Ladner and one in North Delta, and both are staffed with friendly, fun-loving people who make sure that everyone is having the best — and safest — time possible. Regular operating hours begin in July, and admission is free on the weekend.
Delta has three water spray parks, and all of them are open from the Victoria Day long weekend (Saturday, May 18) through to the Labour Day long weekend (Monday, September 2). The water is turned on between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., though the schedule may vary due to weather.
