More than another indoor car show With over 250 radical rides on display indoors, a pre-1970 outdoor show, a back to the 50s and 60s feature display and celebrity car stars, this year’s British Columbia Classic and Custom Car Show celebrates the past and brings car lovers together. “It’s more than just another indoor car show,” said show producer Richardt Scholz. “It’s the motorsport event of the year!” Known as the builder’s show, the 2019 BC Classic and Custom Car show features over 25 builds from professional custom shops presenting their latest creations. This includes Rod Nielsen from Abbotsford’s Hot Rods Restos’ 1,000 horsepower Mazda R100. The 1972 sport compact car was the 2018 SEMA Show Battle Of The Builders Sport Compact Class Champion. Nielsen’s journey to the top at SEMA began back in 2007, when he purchased the obscure import. The R100 is known as the holy grail of Mazdas due to its unique powerplant and it was also the first-ever Rotary engine-powered vehicle to

be mass produced in Europe and later North America. The car was only manufactured from 1968 to 1971, and only about 100,000 were produced. Very few survived until today, and Nielsen managed to score one off of a Mazda enthusiast in Maple Ridge in 2007. From there, the tedious and significant work restoring the car began. About 10 years later, and after a total of 5,000-plus hours had been invested into its re-creation, the car was complete. Nielsen initially wanted to have the car make its debut at the 2017 SEMA Show, but an error with the broker take care of the U.S. border paperwork meant that he was not able to take the car across the line that year because of U.S. commercial transport regulations. However, he began earning accolades for the build at several other shows that year, including the 20th-annual Seven Stock, the B.C. Classic and Custom Car show in Abbotsford, and other shows all across Western Canada.

This past October, with all the correct paperwork, Nielsen finally made his way to the SEMA event. He continued impressing judges as the field whittled down and after days of judging and fanfare, Nielsen was crowned as the 2018 SEMA Show Battle of the Builders Sport Compact Class Champion. The SEMA highlights can be seen on Velocity TV twice a month, check the listings and Nielsen will be making appearances at local shows throughout the year. Enthusiasts view classic and custom cars as rolling art, with the modifications needing to work mechanically and match exactly to the builder’s specifications. Car lovers and those looking to get into cars can speak to professionals about building their dream car at the show. The BC Hot Rod Association and Pacific International Street Rod Association will have large displays. There are also a few customs and hot rods coming up from the United States. Featured rides for this year’s

The 2019 British Columbia Classic and Custom Car Show is the longest-running indoor custom car show in The three-day blended trade and consumer show began in 1997 as

the Vancouver Classic Motoring Show, which displayed around 40 luxury European cars in the lobby and hallways of The Vancouver Hotel. Now, the show features 200 display cars and 70 vendors indoors and a pre-1970s Show and Shine, lowrider display, custom motorcycle showcase and prostreet burnout contest outdoors. From April 12 to 14, the Fraser Valley Trade and Exhibition Centre plays host to the 23rd annual British Columbia Classic and Custom Car Show. Parking is $7 and admission is $18 for adults ages 19 to 55, $15 for seniors, $10 for youth and free for children 12 and under. For more information call the show office at 604.539.7223. Visit bccustomcarshow.com for show details, highlights and more ticket information. Since 2000 the show has been at Abbotsford’s Tradex and features car exhibits, car clubs, motorsport attractions, celebrity car stars and activities for the whole family.

Lamb Skewers 1 1/2 pounds BC lamb, cut into 1 ½ inch pieces

Marinade:

1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup olive oil 4 cloves garlic, minced or grated 2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano, or dried 1 tablespoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon salt + pepper OR simply use a package of SpiceWorks Souvlaki Marinade, following package instructions Combine the ingredients for the lamb marinade in a bowl. Add lamb, stirring to coat each piece. Place in fridge for at least one hour, preferably up to 12 hours. Set your grill, grill pan or skillet to medium-high heat. Thread lamb pieces onto skewers. Discard marinade. Grill lamb until lightly charred and cooked to your liking, turning skewers occasionally throughout cooking, about 8 to 10 minutes total. Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your lamb and your desired doneness. Transfer skewers to plate. To assemble the plates, add a few lamb skewers, feta fries and a dollop of tzatziki to each plate. Serve with a tossed Greek Salad and grilled pita bread.

FeTa FrieS: 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced or grated 3 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano, or 2 tablespoons dried ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional but gives a great little kick!

Paul’s ToP Pick of The MonTh

Kosher salt and black pepper 4 medium russet potatoes, cut into ¼-inch-thick matchsticks 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese, preferably Little Qualicum’s Sunshine Feta Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, garlic, oregano, cayenne, and salt and black pepper to taste. Place the potato matchsticks in a large bowl and pour over half the garlic mixture. Gently toss to coat. Divide the fries between two parchment lined baking sheets, arranging them in a single layer. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, then flip, reduce the oven temperature to 400 degrees, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes more or until browned in spots.. Remove from the oven and toss with the remaining garlic mix and the feta.

TzaTziki: 1 long English cucumber, unpeeled and grated 500g plain yogurt 3-4 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh dill 1 tbsp olive oil salt and pepper to season (I find tzatziki needs a good amount of salt to bring out the best flavours, start with 1 tsp, adding more to taste) Put grated cucumber in a colander and allow to drain for at least 30 minutes. Gently squeeze with hands to remove excess moisture. Place drained cucumber in a bowl, add all the other ingredients; stir to combine. Refrigerate for a minimum of two hours to allow flavours to develop.

The Farmer and the Foodie Signs of spring have long been everywhere as Easter bunnies, fuzzy chicks and shades of pastel colour on every retail shelf, and yet Mother Nature has been slow to do her part. But once awakened, she has raced to make up for lost time with record-setting warmth, coaxing cherry blossoms to burst open and inviting daffodils to turn their faces to the warm sun. With the warmer weather, our thoughts naturally turn to lighter springtime fare such as delicately flavoured BC lamb. We are delighted to feature fresh lamb from Harmony Farms nestled in the picturesque Creston Valley, lovingly pasture raised without the use of antibiotics or added hormones. By growing a unique breed of “hair bred” (for meat only) lamb, this family-owned farm is able to provide us with fresh lamb year-round, and while we always have a supply of fresh lamb in our meat counter, with advance notice our butchers are also happy to create custom cuts.

How to use ‘Living Coral’ in your home With summer almost here, the time of year is just right for decorating with Pantone’s colour of the year, Living Coral. the Diet Myth Researchers say about 60% of us make New Year’s resolutions, but only about 8% stick to them. How are you doing with your New Year’s resolution? Fifty percent of a person’s overall health status is contributed to behaviour, with the top two behaviours being diet and exercise. How do we choose the best diet? Many present-day diets are quite extreme and unsustainable. Yoyo dieters are abundant; they stick with a diet and see results, which is great! However, soon after, they relax and become less consistent, and within a few months they go right back to where they started. What is it that is so difficult about changing how we eat? Change the mindset of a temporary fix. Our bodies are not made to lose 30lbs in 30 days. A diet that is not sustainable long

term is not going to help. Our body needs a slow, gradual habit change that is coupled with exercise. A healthy weight loss is 1-2 lbs/week. Become a nutrition Boy Scout. Be prepared! Choose a habit to focus on that works with your life. Do you need to plan meals? Grocery shop online? Make your lunches the night before? Build on that habit; it is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change. The biggest myth with diets is that they will completely change your life, your weight, and your health. The reality is that while they may make changes in the short-term, chances are they will end up failing in the long run.
