estled on a Southern Coastal mountain slope, the District of Mission overlooks the abundant farmlands and valley of the mighty Fraser River, commanding inspiring views of rolling pastures and mountain vistas. Founded in 1892, Mission was originally inhabited by the Sto:lo First Nations people and today continues to grow with a population of around 40,000 residents. The climate is warm in the summer and mild and wet in the winter. Flowers bloom most of the year, as the area is naturally hospitable to a wide variety of plants and vegetation, including the official flower the Caitlin Rhododendron. With the great outdoors on our doorstep you can try your hand at fishing for the great white sturgeon or abundance of salmon, get adventurous on the miles of biking and hiking trails, or head to one of our many lakes for paddle boarding, kayaking or boating. That’s more than enough to work up a healthy appetite to eat at one of the local favorite cafes or restaurants, or take some time to treat yourself at the boutique stores scattered across the community or in the heart of Mission’s Downtown. If arts and culture is more your scene, then join us at one of the many events hosted by the community and check out the live music scene, entertainment and local artists. n 1891, the Townsite of Mission is laid out by land developer James Welton Horne (after whom three downtown streets are named). Horne arranges an auction for these properties and dubs it the “Great Land Sale”.

The following year, the Corporation of the District of Mission is formed. The “Corporation” surrounds but does not include the Townsite of Mission (the area spanning the Fraser River up to 14th Ave. and from Heritage Park to Cedar Street). In 1922, the Townsite of Mission is renamed the Corporation of the Village of Mission. As a Village, it will now be run by an elected Board of Commissioners. The first Municipal Hall is built in 1929 on Main Street (present-day First Avenue). This building housed both branches of local government at the time: the Corporation of the District of Mission and the Corporation of the Village of Mission. Fast forward to 1950 and the Corporation of the Village of Mission becomes the Corporation of the Village of Mission City. Eight years later, in 1958, the Corporation of the Village of Mission City becomes the Corporation of the Town of Mission City. It is one of the first Villages in B.C. to change status from a Village to a Town. As a Town, Mission City may now elect a Mayor and council. In 1969, the Corporation of the District of Mission and the Corporation of the Town of Mission City amalgamate to become the District of Mission. In 1974, a new Municipal Hall is built at the current location on Stave Lake St., where local government operations continue today. tave Falls is situated in the Stave River watershed, a forestry and recreation area known today as Stave West. Acknowledged as the traditional territory of the Kwantlen, Leq’amel, and Matsqui First Nations, Stave Falls in its natural state featured rugged, snow-capped mountains, glacial-fed waters and dense forests at lower levels which provided the ideal setting for the development of hydro-electric power commencing in the early 1900s.

Completed in 1912 and expanded in the 1920s, the first hydro-electric installations shaped the history and landscape of the area. A thriving community was established with a general store, post office and community hall. The course of Stave River was forever altered, flooding lands to create the Stave Lake Reservoir. Three decades later, the District of Mission was awarded a license in 1958 to establish a sustainable municipal owned and managed tree farm in the area — a first in Canada! In keeping with the past, the natural landscape and heritage of Stave Falls continue to direct its development today. In 1995, the original power house was replaced and repurposed as a tourist attraction and educational centre that was officially designated as a national historic site in 2003. And, partnerships with stakeholders have been established “to advance sustainably-managed community forestry hand-in-hand with safe outdoor recreation.” TO URISM MISSION.C A 7 WWW.TOURISMMISSION.CA

The Powerhouse

he Powerhouse at Stave Falls offers a unique and engaging way for the whole family to learn about the history of the area and to discover how hydro-electricity was generated over 100 years ago at this National Historic Site of Canada. See the immense power created through the Tesla coil demonstration. Feel like you are walking back in time as you wander through the plant, exploring the machinery, artifacts, photos and hands-on displays that bring education to life.

This site has also made it to the big and small screen, with many TV shows and movies using it as a backdrop including X-Men, The 100 and The X-Files.

Get ready to experience high energy at the Powerhouse at Stave Falls. Whether it’s guided or self-guided, any tour at the Powerhouse at Stave Falls will be high energy. You’ll get to play with interactive displays and learn how power is made. Take A Hike If you have never hiked Mission and like to be up bright and early on a Sunday morning, this gets you off to a great start — make sure to pack a snack and wear appropriate footwear. All hikes start at 8 am and are 1–2 hours in duration. Meet 5 minutes early at the designated starting point.

Apri l 14 Heritage Park Trails Enjoy the scenic views and the leisurely walking trails that connect Hatzic and Heritage Park areas of Mission. Meet at the Heritage Park parking lot.

Apri l 28 Stave Dam Forest Interpretation Trail Lookout This moderate self-guided 1.6 km loop hike climbs 150 metres from the trailhead to a viewpoint overlooking the Stave Dam area of Mission. Meet at trail head on Dewdney Trunk Road, 1 km west of Municipal Landfill.

May 12 Steelhead Falls A beautiful well maintained 1.9 km easy trail through towering forest, across two bridges and ending with stairs down to the base of the scenic falls. Meet in parking lot on Dewdney Trunk Road approximately 1 km west from the Mission Landfill.

June 9 Waterfront Loop Enjoy an easy scenic walk at the harbor. Meet in the designated parking area at Waterfront Harbour.

June 23 Doreen’s Trail & Pike’s Pond An easy scenic trail through protected wildlife reserve with various viewpoints around Pike’s Pond. Suitable for families. Meet at trail head in the cul-de-sac at the end of Johnson Street.

July 7 Bear Mountain Trail These are multi use mountain bike trails, using a combination of logging roads and forest trails to popular lookouts. Meet in parking lot on Saunders Street, off Richards Ave.

Red Mountain Trail Lookout This hike will take us to a beautiful patch of preserved old growth forest through a combination of trails. About 3.6 km total and rated moderate-strenuous. Meet in the parking lot of Mill Pond on Dewdney Trunk Road

Rolley Lake Falls An easy, moderate loop trail through thick forests with green moss in moist surroundings. Walk along trails, bridges and boardwalks around the lake. Suitable for families. Meet in the Rolley Lake parking lot.

PRO TIPS Keep areas clean and prevent attracting bears Refrain from shortcutting on trails because it causes erosion and destroys the vegetation. District of Mission forestry trails are signed at the trail head and marked throughout the route with orange reflective markers. Avoid unmarked trails if you are not familiar with the area. Wheels in Motion The trail choices in Mission are seemingly endless. If you love the flow, we’ve got the Lorax with your name on it. Like it steep? The Defibrillator on Mastodon will start your heart. Here’s a list of our favorite beginner, intermediate and advanced trail choices:

Beg i nner Park at Mill Pond and do a lower lap on Bear or Red Mountain. Bear — head up Big Trouble, Little Chainring (BTLC) and either climb halfway up the mountain and cross over for a descent on lower Super Bear, or ride to the top and take in the full Super Bear experience. Upper Super Bear is a technical beginner trail, but once you descend from the upper portion, it turns into berms and rollers for miles.

Intermedi ate Park at Saunders Lot on Bear Mountain and you can climb the trails (the Tomatoes) or the road.

Skip a steep road section on Bear Back, making your way to the lookout at the top of Wasp. Head down Wasp, to Lorax, to Smokin’ Bobo for the triple threat of flow. When finished, you can do a small climb to Cherry Tomato, medium climb to Electric Tomato, or a big climb on either Little Death, or to Mervs to finish out your blue trail riding joy.

Advanced Choices, choices… Two good options and both start at Mill Pond. Red, go up Bypass to the road, and ride the road to Valley View. Climb Valley View and rEDneck to the top. From there, descend on Big Red to Better Red (they are one trail with two flavours) and then ride Black Tie to Momentum and finish back on Bypass to the parking area. Or, for the most adrenaline that Mission has to offer — take on Mastodon. It is classic cross-country with some steep sections that aren’t for the faint of heart. This trail exits onto Dewdney Trunk Road about 200 metres north of where you park at Mill Pond.

PRO TIPS Check out the www.trailforks.com Trailforks website and app to plan your ride. Check your skills with the wide range of trail difficulty within our trail network. Get the payoff and take in the view (Bear Buns, Wasp on Bear & rEDneck Trails). Be prepared — for inclement weather, wild animals & bring supplies. Share the trail.

(Sturgeon are under a strict catch and release policy.) These prehistoric giants are the largest and longest living fresh water fish in North America and daily charters

departing from Mission Marina will ensure you have the best opportunity at sturgeon, salmon, trout and steelhead fishing.

Fraser River Safari Leave the Khaki clothing at home, as this safari sees you head to the Fraser River for a jet boat tour to take in the quiet ambience and incredible scenery the river offers, along with a personal commentary from Captain Liam Sullivan, who shares the local history and wildlife connected to the area. Westminster Abbey

estminster Abbey attracts thousands of visitors each year to its serene perch high above the Fraser Valley. Westminster Abbey is a Bene dictine monastery of priests and brothers who dedicate their lives to God. The iconic bell tower can be seen and the bells heard from across the Fraser Valley. The monks ring many of the 10 bells daily before Mass, and for 15 minutes before Mass and Vespers on Sundays.

The church is 162 feet long by 110 feet wide and contains 64 stained glass windows. The rainbow coloured glass creates windows that stand 22 feet high around the perimeter of the church. The dome of coloured glass rises 50 feet above the altar, allowing shafts of light to stream into the church. Visitors are welcome, and asked to follow the dress code of no shorts or overly exposed skin, when entering the Abbey Church.

eagle festival FRASER VALLEY NOVEMBER 16–17, 2019

he largest gathering of a single raptor anywhere (according to biologist David Hancock) occurs just 30 minutes east of the District of Mission. Thousands of eagles gather to feast on the spawned out carcasses of salmon along the shores of the Chehalis Estuary. The Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival is a free two-day event, that occurs on Nov 16/17 in 2019, that was created to celebrate this annual phenomenon. Expert speakers, guided walks, historic sites, exhibitors, eagle "safaris" and more are part of the annual weekend's edu-tainment. www.fvbef.ca

Silverdale Wetlands is a good place to enjoy birds year round. An easy loop walk with Great Blue Herons, Belted Kingfisher. Spring summer bring swallows and songbirds. Keep your dog on a leash. Nicomen slough dike at Nicomen Trunk Road. Park on the north side of the highway. An easy walk along the dike. Best October to January to view Bald Eagles. You may also see Flickers, Swans, Steller’s Jay, Spotted Towhee and other wintering birds. Dewdney boat launch. Park at the boat launch and head west along the dike. Summer birds include Lazuli Bunting, White-crowned Sparrow or Common Yellowthroat. Mountain trails east of Heritage Park. Watch for white wash under trees. If you see some look up! You may have found an owl. Barred Owls and Northern Sawwhet Owls. In your backyard. Put a feeder up visible from a window. Keep track of your visitors. If you like to photograph them put a perch near the feeder (watch the background) and they may pose for you! (Feeders can go up from December through March, per local bylaws.)

Centennial Park Trail Located between Grand Street & James Street and 9th Avenue & 14th Avenue, this park offers short trails, a playground, tennis, and lacrosse courts. College Heights Trail The trail head and parking area are located at the end of Weatherhead Court cul-de-sac, just north of 12th Avenue. The trail winds east through a residential area, with many ups and downs, boardwalks and bridges. The trail terminates on 12th Avenue, east of Horne Street. East Mission Heritage Greenway A 3.2 km trail connecting Fraser River Heritage Park and Hatzic Bench via Jasper Ave. This scenic, moderate level trail loops through the park and can be accessed from either end.

Fraser River Heritage Park Trails A self-guided walking tour of Mission’s history including an early Oblate mission site and cemetery overlooking the Fraser River. Trails extend to Heritage Park Secondary School around a salmon spawning pond, running track and sports field. Lane Creek Trail Trail connects 7th Avenue and Murray Street to the Mission Community Library on 2nd Avenue. Silverdale Wetlands Park Trail A flat, gravel trail approximately 400 metres in length with a series of bridges and lookouts over wetlands habitat. Information kiosk on site and limited parking available on Silverdale Ave. The trail may be closed during high water conditions. Windebank Trail A short 200 metre flat, gravel trail following the edge of Windebank Creek and connecting 7th Avenue and Swift Drive.

he Clarke Theatre opened in 1997 to great fanfare and it is still the heart of the arts in Mission, known as much for some incredible national artists such as Burton Cummings and Gord Downy as it is for local talent and emerging dance choreographers. A 702 seat facility, owned and operated by the Mission Public School District, the theatre has also been the training ground for young artists such as Mission’s own Carly Rae Jepsen who first hit the stage at the age of ten. The school community uses the facility for seasonal concerts and dance presentations as well as for their annual musicals. Not content to simply function as a theatre, the entire Heritage Park Centre has become a meeting place for all things cultural such as the Ukrainian Festival, Diwali Celebrations and numerous community events. The cafeteria and lobby areas double as gathering places for the Mission Winter Farmer’s Market, the Mission Arts Council Christmas Craft Show and the Mission Coffee House series. e’re pleased to welcome audiences to the 32nd Annual Mission Folk Music Festival taking place July, 26–28, 2019, in the beautiful Fraser River Heritage Park. Be sure to check out the unique collection of local, national, and international artists for a weekend of quality music and entertainment. The Festival begins with the Friday night Community Celebration and continues through Saturday and Sunday featuring concerts, workshops, dances, children and family programming, artisan market, food trucks, and weekend camping. Dust off your dancing shoes for the square dance, bring your voice for the festival choir, and tune up your instruments for the jam sessions and workshops available free to attendees.

f you’re looking for a foot-stomping, outdoor concert series, look no further than our very own Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series held at Fraser River Heritage Park in beautiful Mission. Now in its 28th year, Envision Financial has been the title sponsor since 2001. What makes this concert series so special? Every Wednesday and Friday night, friends and families from around the community pack their chairs and pick their spot of grass and enjoy free concerts — school groups, national and international musicians have graced the park stage. The Envision Financial Twilight Concert series creates a sense of belonging and community spirit for all concert goers. We’re committed to making a difference for our community; therefore, several times throughout this year’s schedule we’ll invite concert goers to bring a non-perishable food item for Mission’s St. Joseph’s Food Bank and Envision Financial’s signature cause, The Full Cupboard. We’ll not only showcase amazing musicians, we’ll tackle the issue of hunger in our community.

he Mission Arts Council, located in the Mission Arts Centre, is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and the creative vitality of the people of Mission by nurturing awareness of, involvement in, and commitment to Arts and Culture since 1972. Also located in the Mission Arts Centre is The Rock Family Gallery, the Doris J. Paterson Atelier secondary gallery, and an assortment of gift cases, displaying greeting cards, books, and many other locally handcrafted items for purchase. The Mission Arts Centre is also home to our many programs, classes and special events, and provides opportunities for membership and volunteering.

n 2019, Culture Days will be marking 10 years of inspiring millions of Canadians to participate and engage in arts and culture in every province and territory. In Mission, free events will be taking place throughout the three-day event, set for September 27–29. Mission hosted more than 60 activities in 2018 and placed fifth in Canada in its category of towns with a population under 50,000.

In honour of that success, Mission has been chosen as the Culture Days Provincial Launch City for 2019. Organizers are hoping to have even more participatory arts and cultural activities hosted by artists, organizations, schools and community groups all over Mission. Don’t miss all the fun. he District of Mission Parks, Recreation & Culture opened its skate park on July 16, 2016. The Mission Skate Park was developed with input from local skaters and the contractor New Line Skate Parks. The facility is now a popular place for the young, and even the not-so-young, to come out

and showcase their skills — or even to develop new ones. Whether it’s skateboards, bikes or whatever you prefer to ride, the park provides a place for some exercise and fun. The park is located at 7650 Grand Street, by the Mission Leisure Centre. It offers several stair sets, manny pads, ledges, bowls, pyramids, and rails.

Candlelight Parade

he Mission Candlelight Parade has become a holiday tradition not to be missed.

The annual event, brought to the community by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest night time parades in Western Canada. The parade attracts an estimated crowd of more than 15,000 spectators and contains around 80 floats that range from school marching bands to businesses and non-profit organizations. Highlights of the parade include beautiful floats, flamboyant marching bands, lovely vocal performances, dancers, a lot of great giveaways, classic cars, fire trucks and police vehicles. Floats are illuminated with thousands of lights that impress the audience in the dark. Of course, the highlight of the evening is the arrival of Santa himself. Kids cheer and yell as the jolly old elf makes his appearance. This year marked the 35th annual parade. The parade runs right through Downtown Mission on First Ave.

Designed by Kwantlen artist Brandon Gabriel, the six pier panels took four years to create and are made from weathered Core 10 steel. Each panel shares a different story, Raven and sun — the bringer of the first sunrise and a shapeshifter spirit that can take the form of any living being on earth. Two salmon — recognising the significance of the area for spawning salmon, as 80% of the world’s salmon travel though the Fraser River. The frog — part of the flood and creation story, and has spiritual significance due to its ability to move between the land and water. Mountain goat and sunrise — these creatures were there to witness humans disembarking from their canoes during the time of flooding. They also use roam in large numbers in the Golden Ears mountain ranges. The panels on either side are the wolf — the clan animal of the Kwantlen people. Make sure to see them during the day and at night, as they are backlit to be seen at all times. The easiest viewing place will be from Ruskin recreation and picnic area, which will re-open once the upgrade work is complete.

River history T he Fraser River has been an essential part of Mission’s history going all the way back to the first inhabitants of the region, the Sto:lo, or the People of the River. People travelling the Fraser River in huge cargo canoes met in the centre of the great river valley where the Sto:lo traded wind-dried salmon, fruits and other goods with clans from the coast and the interior of British Columbia. Prior to the 1880s, the primary mode of transportation was via river (or horse

carriage). Steamboats were a frequent sight along the Fraser, ferrying passengers and goods up and down the coast. Even after the construction of Mission Junction station in 1885, the cheaper fare of steamboats made them a popular choice for travel. Of course, living next to the Mighty Fraser River also held some disadvantages. In 1894, the spring thaw caused the Fraser River to rise to a dangerous level and the newly constructed Mission City was soon submerged.

Flooding was a problem throughout Mission’s early days. The biggest incident occurring in 1948. “The Great Flood of 1948” was catastrophic, not only to Mission but to the entire Fraser Valley. Although most Mission residents volunteered many hours of their time, tirelessly placing sandbags at the top of the dike to ward off the floodwaters, it was still not enough. Today, sturgeon fishing, boat tours and other recreational activities on the river are popular local and tourist activities.
