SPRING FASHIONS

men’S spring fashion:

for 2019

Spring fashion trends for women wondering what you should be wearing this spring? Here are the trends you’ll see everywhere this season. Prints not for the faint of heart, tropical and animal prints, polka dots and tie-dye dominate this season. mix them all together for a bold look, or wear a single pattern from head to toe to make an impact. Colour If prints aren’t your thing, go for a bold splash of colour. Canary yellow is huge this season as are other festive and warm shades like red, orange and coral. Vibrant neon hues are also up and coming. oversized Bigger is better when it comes to basically everything this spring. opt for big shoulders and wide-legged pants for work, and choose ruffles, bows and ample sleeves for party dresses. Bohemian You’ll want to live in flowing caftans in all colours and sizes this season. Pair them with crochet garments for an eclectic 70s vibe. statement jewelry Supersized bracelets, necklaces and earrings will grab people’s attention. Don’t be shy to wear more than one piece at a time. Bags Forget totes, the hottest handbags this season are cubes and spheres. If that’s too outlandish for you, go for an oversized crochet bag or a smaller fanny pack made from luxe leather.

WinterClearance

shorts for all oCCasions Shorts are more stylish than ever this season. Choose practical shorts with lots of pockets or dare to show more of your legs in short shorts. Don’t hesitate to dress them up and wear them with a blazer for special events and parties. utility PoCkets You won’t struggle to carry your wallet, keys and phone anymore. Pockets are popping up everywhere, from the cargo pants that are back in style to safari type vests adorned with pockets aplenty. trenCh Coats A classic for a reason, trench coats are perfect for keeping you warm, dry and stylish. Choose basic beige or opt for something that has a unique print.

Baked Shrimp

DISH

with Fennel and Feta This (almost) one-pan dish is simple, yet perfect for guests. It’s a great recipe to experiment with fennel as its delicate flavour doesn’t overpower the dish. Using Ocean Wise Selva Shrimp or fresh, LOCAL, Berezan shrimp ensures you are eating the most sustainably grown shrimp we can find! INGREDIENTS: • 4 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil • 1-1/2 cups 1/2-inch diced fennel bulb (about 1 small or 1/2 large) (the fronds make a pretty garnish for the dish once you’ve taken it out of the oven, or tear into small pieces and toss them into a salad for a hint of anise flavour) • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 cup dry white wine • 1 - 398 ml tin diced tomatoes, with their juices • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs (whiz a few pieces of bread in your food processor) • 3 Tbs. chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 125 gms. feta, crumbled (about 3/4 to 1 cup) (my favourite is the B.C. Sunshine Feta from Little Qualicum Cheeseworks. It’s lightly marinated so gives even more flavour to the dish) • 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 lb. shrimp, preferably Ocean Wise Selva brand or fresh Berezan shrimp INSTRUCTIONS Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat the oven to 425°F. In a 12-inch ovenproof skillet, heat 2 Tbs. of the olive oil over medium heat. Add the fennel and sauté, stirring occasionally until slightly softened and lightly browned, 7 to 8 minutes. Add the garlic and

sauté until fragrant, 1 minute. Take care not to let the garlic burn, as it will add a bitter taste to the dish. Add the wine and bring to a boil. Add the tomatoes and their juices, season with salt and pepper, and stir to heat through. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, spread the tomato mixture into an even layer in the skillet. In a small bowl, stir the breadcrumbs, parsley, feta, the remaining 2 Tbs. olive oil, and salt (about 1/2 tsp., depending on the saltiness of the feta) and pepper to taste. Arrange the shrimp in a single layer on the tomato mixture, and sprinkle with the breadcrumb mixture. Bake until the shrimp are cooked through and the cheese is melted, 12 to 15 minutes. Makes a delicious starter when served with a crusty baguette to sop up all the delicious juices, or pair with an orzo and parmesan side dish and call it dinner.

PaiR iT WiTh: This is a dry white wine that pairs well with both shrimp and Feta cheese, making it a fantastic pair with the Baked shrimp with Fennel & Feta. enjoy!

The Farmer and the Foodie Farmer Rob and I were privileged to join an agriculture tour in Vietnam in November and loved experiencing the friendly people, delicious cuisine, lush green countryside, and insane motorbike traffic. Seafood was often on the menu as the extensive waterways of this tropical country employ many local fishing families. This month’s recipe features shrimp, and while both kinds of shrimp in our fish department have unique stories, one has a direct connection to Vietnam.

HOME LIFE

Freshen up your home for spring Come spring, many homeowners are eager to throw open their windows and doors and breathe new life into their homes. Simple changes made now — even before the weather begins to warm up — can improve interior spaces and brighten your home’s atmosphere.

Swap out throw pillows

Accent pillows are a quick and inexpensive way to add new bursts of colour to rooms. You may be able to make over a room’s entire colour scheme with new pillows. Invest in pillows that you can switch with each season so your decor will never look tired or dull.

Clean existing light fixtures

Another way to brighten the mood in a home is to periodically clean light fixtures to make sure they are working effectively. Spend time dusting them and cleaning off any accumulated debris. If need be, switch out old lamp shades for newer ones that let more light shine through. If inadequate lighting is a problem no matter how many lamps you have, consult with an electrician about installing more overhead and accent lighting.

Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning

Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blowing throughout your

home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deepcleaned.

Colour-coordinate bookshelves

Group all books with similarly coloured covers together for an instant and eye-appealing look.

Simmer some homemade deodorizer

In a large pot, boil water and some scented herbs, such as rosemary, citrus rinds, vanilla, or lavender. The aroma will waft through the home, creating a pleasing scent.

Invest in new window treatments

Lightweight draperies or new blinds or shades can transform the look of a room. Be sure to keep curtains and blinds open during the day to maximize the hours of sunlight. Homeowners can make some simple changes while they’re stuck indoors and reap the benefits when the weather warms up again.

• Recognize the value of repetition. Repetition increases the likelihood that the brain will record the information and be capable of retrieving it later. • Eat a healthy diet. People who eat healthy diets with lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish and little alcohol and red meat may be less likely to experience declines in their memory and thinking skills. • Break things down. Breaking things down into small chunks also can help improve memory. If tasked with remembering something extensive, such as a speech, focus on a single sentence at a time, only moving on to the next sentence when you’re confident you have successfully committed the preceding sentence to memory.
