On the water SPROAT LAKE
Home to the Sproat Lake Regatta, Dragon Boat Racing and the Outriggers Canoe Race, Sproat Lake is a boater’s paradise. Sproat Lake Provincial Park boasts a beautiful waterfront park complete with picnic tables and a sandy beach, this is the perfect place to take a dip, or sit back and enjoy the spectacular view. If sitting isn’t really your thing, a short hike along the waters’ edge will take you to see the Petroglyphs.

Take advantage of the afternoon winds at China Creek Campground and Marina and try your hand at kiteboarding. DELLA FALLS Canada’s ‘Highest vertical drop waterfall, Della Falls is a bucket-list hike. The falls, discovered by prospector Joe Drinkwater in 1899 and named for his wife, measures 1443ft. Located in Strathcona Provincial Park, the 15km hike is a steady incline along an old logging railway, taking you to the base of the falls. It is rugged and steep in places and not recommended for novice hikers. A number of backcountry campsites are located along the trail, including a beautiful site at Margaret Creek that boasts rushing waters and stunning views. The trailhead, located on the western shore of Great Central Lake, can only be accessed by boat. The 35km crossing can be taken by canoe or water taxi. Last year Della Falls Water Taxi took over 400 hikers to the trailhead. If you are planning to visit Della Falls this summer we recommend that you book in advance to ensure your spot.

Hiking DAY HIKES
If you don’t have a couple of days to spare, the Alberni Valley has an abundance of hiking trails that offer an outdoor experience for everyone in the family. ALBERNI INLET TRAIL
Divided into two phases, this moderate-level hike boasts stunning views. Elements of Port Alberni’s mining days can be found along the route. Phase One, approximately 10km, begins at Ship Creek Road. Phase Two begins at Franklin River Road for 14km. Please check Island Timberlands website for access. THE LOG TRAIN TRAIL

This mostly flat 25km trail stretches along the foot of the Beaufort Range. It passes through two mill sites and boasts stunning mountain views. Accessible from many points in the Alberni Valley, this trail is suitable for family outings by horse, bike or foot.
SHORT AND SWEET
The Kitsuksis Trail is a 3km paved loop following the dyke along both sides of the Kitsuksis Creek. The paved path crosses through two parks which include washrooms, playgrounds and picnic areas. Stamp River Provincial Park, located 14km outside of Port Alberni, is home to a 2km trail network along the Stamp River; an excellent location to see the salmon run from early June through October. Hole in the Wall is a manmade hole in a cliff face next to Roger Creek. A small decline down an old logging road takes you to this spectacular rock face and water pool. The Anglers Trail This is a magnificent trail that winds along the most productive salmon river on Vancouver Island. It combines a wild river, groves of huge old Douglas Fir, tall second growth forest, and salmon in the river. Really, this is an iconic west coast gem of a trail, all 8 kms of it. The only downside is that it isn’t a loop trail. So if you plan on hiking it, use two vehicles. Park one at the far end and drive back in the other vehicle to the first trailhead. At the end of the day you’ll have to do that again in reverse. Go in September or October when the biggest species of salmon, the Chinook, is running.
Fossli Provincial Park, located on the Stirling Arm of Sproat Lake, this short hike features a suspension bridge, waterfalls, old-growth forest and homestead site.

From March 14th to June 8th the Alberni Valley Museum is proud to be hosting the travelling exhibition Echoes in the Ice: Finding Franklin’s Ship. Ever since explorers began searching for a Northwest Passage over 400 years ago, the Arctic has been a fascinating and important area of study, rich with drama, adventure, even tragedy. Using artifacts, images, audiovisual presentations, and art, Echoes in the Ice: Finding Franklin’s Ship examines Arctic exploration past and present, profiles the explorers involved in the search for the Northwest Passage, and decodes the mysteries of the Franklin Expedition of 1845, in which an entire crew vanished in the Arctic during an ill-fated search. These stories are told using artifacts such as instruments and objects dating from the same period as the Franklin Expedition, as well as contemporary scientific objects used by present-day scientists investigating the high Arctic. New additions to the exhibition include recent Parks Canada photographs of the HMS Terror, as well as photographs and videos from the discovery of HMS Erebus.

MARITIME DISCOVERY MUSEUM
Dive into the deep and explore Port Alberni’s rich maritime history at this unique, non-profit museum. This summer the museum features a display showcasing diving equipment used in the Alberni Inlet during World War 2. “We are a port town but not many people know about our maritime history,” says Facility Coordinator, Jenn Preedy, “it’s a huge part of our identity that ties into our industrial past.” Featuring restored boats and model ships, this treasure of Port Alberni is not to be missed.
This year the Maritime Discovery Museum is proud to host the carving of a language revitalization totem pole. The ancient cedar that fell in a windstorm more than 50 years ago will be carved by renowned Nuu-Chah-Nulth artist, Tim Paul. Once completed, the totem pole will be transported to the University of Victoria where it will be displayed on the traditional territory of the Lkwungen-speaking peoples upon which the university stands.
MCLEAN MILL HISTORIC SITE
Take a walk through history when you visit the McLean Mill National Historic Site. The saw mill was established by Robert Bartlett McLean, his wife Cora and their three sons, it continued as a family-run operation until 1965 and is the only commercial steam-operated sawmill in Canada. Operational until 2016, McLean Mill is a rare, surviving example of an early - to - mid 20th century logging and lumber operation in British Columbia.

History
INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE CENTER
A large collection of historical industrial artifacts, many of which were used by the McLean Mill, are preserved and restored at the Port Alberni Industrial Heritage Centre.
The historic collection included several antique logging trucks, a 1939 Ford Firetruck, historic bulldozers and vintage cars. The centre is located on Ninth Avenue next to the curling rink, please check online for opening hours.

Built in 1935, the Capitol Theatre was constructed to showcase talking pictures and operated as such until the 1970s. It became the home of the Portal Players Dramatic Society in 1989 when the organization bought the Capitol. Since then, it has been lovingly renovated and restored in several phases, to showcase the society’s many successful live productions. From July 5th-13th, the Capitol Theatre will be the operational hub of Theatre BC’s MAINSTAGE Festival, proudly hosted by the Portal Players Dramatic Society. This exciting annual event is the culmination of winning plays from Theatre BC Zone Festivals involving up to 10 Zones throughout the Province of BC. Dozens of community theatre clubs participate in Zone Festivals, with hopes riding on the chance to take their winning play to MAINSTAGE for friendly competition with the province’s best. THE ROLLIN ARTS CENTRE
Home of the Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley, the Rollin Arts Centre occupies the house and grounds of a beautiful period house built in 1914. The Community Arts Council has lovingly restored the property and today it houses a gallery, art studio and tranquil heritage gardens. The gallery features work from local artists and new exhibits arrive monthly. The gift shop features unique products from over 100 local artists. Each Thursday throughout July and August visitors can enjoy Tea on the Terrace, a long standing Port Alberni tradition that invites you to enjoy local artists and musicians while sipping tea in the stunning gardens. The 4th annual Solstice Arts Festival takes place on June 14th and 15th, an exciting weekend that celebrates arts, music and community. Visit the Rollin Arts Centre to experience artists and musicians in the garden and a children’s activity tent. Days with the Arts offers an exciting self-guided gallery tour throughout the festival. If you arrive on one of the Maasdam cruise ships or are in town during the Cruise Festivals May 25, June 15 or July 6, a free shuttle will be available for visiting the Rollin Arts Centre.

First Nations Port Alberni’s city boundaries lie within the traditional territories of the Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nations, two of the fourteen tribes of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation – a territory that stretches along much of the west coast of Vancouver Island. Nuu-chah-nulth (meaning “all along the mountains”) cultures are deeply ingrained and celebrated throughout the Alberni Valley. The Nuu-chah-nulth tribes have had a strong ceremonial culture that includes feasting, songs and dancing.
CULTURE
Kleekhoot Gold, local maple syrup made on the traditional territory of the Hupacasath First Nation can be purchased from their Administration building. With approximately 1400 big leaf maple trees tapped, this is the largest operation of its kind in the world. The Tseshaht Market is the last stop for gas before Tofino and Ucluelet. Their shop boasts First Nations Giftware, a deli and snacks, and a Totem Pole Garden is located outside.
Huu-ay-aht First Nations offer a unique guided tour to Kiixin Village and Fortress National Historic Site of Canada. Kiixin is the site of a 19th-century village and fortress and is the only known traditional First Nations village remaining on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It was Huu-ay-aht’s capital village site, and it still features significant, standing traditional architecture.

ARTS
A rich collection of First Nations art can be found throughout the Valley. The Hupacasath welcome visitors to the region with traditional welcome figures located at Victoria Quay. The female figure is positioned to welcome visitors from the water, while the male figure is turned to welcome visitors from the land. An impressive carving depicting a traditional whaling canoe is also on display. Discover ancient petroglyphs at Sproat Lake Provincial Park. Made thousands of years ago by ancestors of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, these remarkable carvings are etched into the rocks on the edge of the lake. A locally carved totem pole is on display at the Tseshaht First Nation Administration Building. Original Northwest Coast Art created by long-term local artist, Gordon Dick, is on display at Ahtsik Native Art Gallery. Here you can see First Nations Jewelry, masks, sculptures, wood carvings and panels.
First Nations A breathtaking sculpture by local artist, Connie Watts, stands at the site of the notorious former Alberni Residential School. Remembering the resiliency of those who survived and honors those who did not return to their families, the sculpture has been named “Strength From Within”. The Tseshaht First Nation politely asks that you visit their Administration Building to seek permission to visit the sculpture. An extensive collection of First Nations artifacts and information can be found at the Alberni Valley Museum.

The sites are located a short distance from a stunning lakefront park complete with picnic benches, a boat launch and a beautiful hiking trail to see the famous Sproat Lake Petroglyphs.
MACKTUSH CREEK CAMPGROUND A journey that is well worth it! Located on the northern shore of the Alberni Inlet some 27km outside of Port Alberni along a gravel road, this place is the definition of “off the beaten track”. Macktush Creek offers over 90 beautiful campsites, many of which are waterfront that can accommodate anything from a canvas tent to a large recreational vehicle.
STAMP RIVER PROVINCIAL PARK With hiking trails, waterfalls and a fish ladder, Stamp River Provincial Park is one of the best places to see the salmon run. The park features many riverside campsites big enough to manage your Tent, Camper or RV.
ARROWVALE CAMPGROUND AND FARM Riverside camping at its finest. Arrowvale Campground features scenic campsites, hiking trails, swimming and fishing while being just a stone’s throw away from Port Alberni. CHINA CREEK MARINA AND CAMPGROUND Offering oceanfront, creek-side and forested campsites, China Creek Campground can accommodate tents and recreational vehicles. Just 15km outside Port Alberni, China Creek Campground is home to a natural south facing beach, excellent fishing opportunities, access to the Alberni Inlet Trail, and a fully accessible boat launch. SNOW CREEK RECREATION SITE This pretty campsite is a backroad paradise. Located on the Taylor Arm of Sproat Lake, Snow Creek Recreation Site is approximately 9km along a rough gravel road that is recommended only for RVs with a short wheel base. Once there, the site features a beautiful sandy beach and boat launch. MCLEAN MILL NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK Camping is available at the McLean Mill National Historic Park. Power is available for some sites but otherwise this campground should be considered rustic and without many services. It’s a beautiful area with many trails.

Live HERE Living in Alberni Valley The Alberni Valley is a large and diverse area of over 6,600 square kilometers centrally located on Vancouver Island. It is bordered by the Beaufort Mountain Range to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The city of Port Alberni is the largest city and commercial hub of the region with a population of more than 17,000. Port Alberni and the encompassing Valley are surrounded by forests, mountains, ocean inlets, and freshwater lakes and streams. This area of Vancouver Island is popular for its sports fishing, including steelhead, halibut, cod and of course, five species of salmon.

Port Alberni has a temperate climate that is influenced by a prevailing western flow that results in periods of extended high levels of precipitation during winter months and equally extended periods of dry, warm weather during summer months.
