Summerland is a four-season playground located in the southern Okanagan Valley of BC. GETTING HERE
BY ROAD Highway 97 is a modern highway that runs north from the USA border at Osoyoos for a scenic one-hour drive to Summerland through orchards, vineyards and some of the most beautiful scenery in British Columbia.

Highway 97 continues north following Okanagan Lake through Peachland, West Kelowna then crosses to the east side of the lake to Kelowna, the largest metropolitan area in the Okanagan. Highway 3, the Crow’s Nest, a major west east highway, intersects with Highway 97 just 30 minutes south of Summerland and parallels the Canada USA border providing access to the lower mainland of BC to the west and the all points east terminating in Southern Alberta. Highway 5A, the Okanagan Connector, intersects Highway 97 just 20 minutes north of Summerland and connects to Highway 5 which runs south to Highway 1 and greater Vancouver and north to Kamloops.

NIXDORF CLASSIC CARS – THE OKANAGAN’S ONLY CLASSIC CAR SHOWROOM Whether you are a car fanatic or someone who simply appreciates the beauty and lines of great cars from a bygone era Nixdorf Classic Cars is a Summerland must visit. SUNNY & DRY Summerland (did we mention the name says it all?) is a semi arid desert environment with just enough rain to make things grow. Summerland folk own umbrellas and gumboots only for trips “to the coast”. You can plan a golf game or outing never having to worry about “checking the forecast”.
Ski Apex Mountain Resort in the morning and play a round of golf in the afternoon. A hike up Giant’s Head Mountain followed by a dip in the lake and wine tasting can make a great day.

Sandwiched between rocky bluffs and the azure lake Rotary Beach is a popular choice. Two wooden wharfs and a floating raft offer endless opportunities to relax and swim. Shop among the vendors and remember to set your camera to ‘panorama’!
CRESCENT BEACH AT KINSMEN PARK
This quiet corner of paradise has a small playground for younger children. A perfect place to sip your morning coffee and watch for bluebirds or rock wren. Relax and contemplate the striking Naramata headland as you get ready for your day.

The idyllic south-facing bay is a magnet for water sports enthusiasts. With over a kilometre of soft sandy beach there is no end of space to relax and play. Sun-Oka is billed as “one of the most superb beaches in the entire Okanagan”. Picnic areas, volleyball courts, a concession stand and boat access make Sun-Oka a true gem.

OKANAGAN LAKE THE HOME OF THE OGOPOGO Okanagan Lake is one of the most popular lakes in British Columbia. The 120km/75 mi long fjord lake was carved out by repeated glaciations. The maximum depth of the lake is 230m/755 ft. deep near Grant Island. The lake varies from 3-5km in width.
Being a glacier formed lake there are areas with up to 800m/2625ft of glacial sediment deposited during the Pleistocene Epoch era. If the sediment was completely removed the depth of the resulting valley, from bedrock to the top of the surrounding plateaus, would exceed the depth of the Grand Canyon. Okanagan Lake is home to the legendary lake monster Ogopogo, the creature that lives at Squally Point, located across the lake from Peachland. The Ogopogo was known to the First Nations as N’Haatik, the Demon of the Lake. The lake was an important transportation route for the valley during the early days of settlement and development of the region. The lack of roads or a railway made the lake a natural corridor for passenger travel and freight.

Starting in the 1890s steamboats were active on the lake. Prior to the construction of the bridge from Kelowna to West Kelowna in 1958, a ferry connected the east and west shores. With the construction of the railway and more roads, the need for the steamboats slowly came to an end. The sternwheelers made the lake a commercial highway from 1892 until 1936. The steamships helped the Okanagan Valley enter the 20th century. Commercial shipping came to an end with the retirement of Canadian National Tug #6. She operated on Okanagan Lake until 1973 moving barges the length of the lake. The lake has completely frozen over just a handful of time, once in 1906/07, in 1929 and again in 1949/50 and 1968/69.
SKATE PARK Opened in the spring of 2019 this park has been created with the latest in design and features. The park not just for skateboarders. It’s for kids on scooters, little push bikes, BMX bikes, wheelchairs, and in-line skates. The park is located at the corner of Rosedale Ave. and Jubilee Rd. West and is open during the spring, summer, and fall months from dawn to dusk.

MILLENNIUM SPRAY PARK Need Some Splish Splash Summer Fun for the Kids? On a hot summer day there is nothing the little, and not so little, ones enjoy more than a trip to the spray park. Located in Peach Orchard Park the Millennium Spray Park has 15 pieces of apparatus including water cannons and 25 ground sprays. The park is open daily from May through to September and contains both timer and motion sensors for water efficient operation and extra fun. EXPERIENCE THE ROMANCE OF A BYGONE ERA WITH AN UNFORGETTABLE RIDE ON THE KETTLE VALLEY STEAM RAILWAY The Kettle Valley Steam Railway showcases a unique part of Okanagan and British Columbia history. Built in 1910 -15, the KVR provided access to the pioneer fruit industry into world markets, transported families, created employment, hobos and stories that are an important part of Okanagan history. TAKE A RIDE Take a ride on the only preserved section of the Historic Kettle Valley Railway. Your heritage train adventure offers up 16 kilometers of beautiful vistas. From lush orchards and vineyards to a spectacular view of Okanagan Lake and surrounding country side the view from the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge, 238 ft above the canyon floor, is a sight to behold.

TRAIN TRIPS The regular train run schedule has you pulling out of the station at either 10:30 am or 1:30 pm Saturday, Sunday, and Monday in May, June September and October. The summer schedule has the train running Thursdays through Mondays in July & August. The trip is 90 minutes long and includes a picture taking stop on the trestle. THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY is a two hour journey that includes a bar-bque meal. Experience a taste of the “Old Wild West” on the most popular trip offered. Your heart will race as the notorious Garnett Valley Gang rides out of the hills to stop the train and rob passengers of their spare change for local charities.
THE CHRISTMAS EXPRESS is a 60 minute ride that is an annual tradition for local families and visitors alike. The Christmas Express heralds the magic of the season with twinkling lights, music and jolly old Santa. You’ll be enchanted by the Christmas lights on homes along the rail line and on the 3716 locomotive. The are a number of SPECIAL EVENT TRAINS that run throughout the season. These 90 minute runs celebrate special days including Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and more! You can book a CHARTER TRAIN on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway. These 90 minute trips are great for your wedding, corporate party, or other celebrations.
PICK YOUR COACH OPEN AIR OR VINTAGE CAR The open air cars feature a roof to shelter from the hot sun, and the sides are open to allow the breeze to cool you down as you travel along the majestic tracks overlooking Summerland. The vintage coaches are enclosed authentic vintage coaches from the 1940’s that have been tastefully restored to maintain their original look and feel. The Trans Canada/KVR trail is simply a must. The Summerland portion of the trail covers 61 km between Penticton and Osprey Lake and features four bridges including the KVR’s highest, the Trout Creek Trestle Bridge.

GIANT’S HEAD MOUNTAIN
TAKE YOUR VACATION TO NEW HEIGHTS Giant’s Head Mountain is the spectacular monolith standing 350 metres/1150 feet above the town. Giant’s Head Mountain was formed when an ancient eruption shattered the original volcano, catapulting lava bombs across the prehistoric landscape. Named for the face-like profile carved by glaciers the summit of Giant’s Head Mountain is accessible by a switchback road with parking at the bottom or near the summit for those looking for a shorter hike. You can choose to take the steep Confederation trail or the more relaxing Centennial trail. Either path will lead you to breath-taking, panoramic views well worth the journey.
GIANT’S HEAD EVENTS
Stand at the peak and enjoy a stunning 360 degree panoramic view of the town, vineyards and orchards that populate the beautiful landscape right down to Okanagan Lake.
The Giant’s Head Grind is not for the faint of heart. Each May participants run more than 5 kilometres from the beach at Peach Orchard Park to the very top of Giant’s Head. The Giant’s Head Freeride is staged each June and hosts hundreds of downhill longboard skaters from across North America, and beyond, who make as many runs as possible down the historical road.

THE WORLD’S TALLEST TRIPOD ORCHARD LADDER The World’s Tallest Tripod Orchard Ladder can be found at the Dickinson Family Farm located at 17208 Bentley Road. This family farm was founded in 1912 by English relatives of the current owners. The record setting ladder was designed by Dwane Dickinson and built by a local Summerlander in 2000. It is recognized by the world famous record book (you know which one!!) Constructed primarily of wood, the ladder stands some 30 feet 2 inches high, weighs approximately 500 lbs and sits high above the orchard fruit trees. Stop in and see the ladder and have your picture taken. The folks at home will be amazed.

SUMMERLAND SWEETS A MUST VISIT SINCE 1962 Summerland Sweets was founded in 1962. In the early 1960‘s founder Ted Atkinson worked out of the pickers’ cabin on his orchard. He started producing fruit jelly candies for the local Rotary Club fundraiser. He soon turned to commercial production and what began as a fundraising effort blossomed into Summerland Sweets! TROUT HATCHERY The Summerland Trout Hatchery is in their 91st year of operation annually raising one million char, brook and rainbow trout for the recreational fishery, stocking them into 300 lakes. The hatchery welcomes around 3,000 visitors each year and its outreach staff operate the Learn to Fish programs in the area. The visitor centre provides tours that include viewing live fish in and outdoors, videos, a colouring station for kids, and learning where to fish around the area. The hatchery is full of information on fish, where and how to angle, and conservation. The hatchery is also home to a rod loan program. Visitors can borrow fishing rods and gear at no cost and try fishing at a nearby lake.

A SHOWCASE OF THE ARTS - AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 1, 2019 The Ryga Arts Festival is a multi-day festival celebrating the arts with live music, theatre, storytelling, author readings, art shows, and workshops. The Ryga Festival is inspired by former Summerland resident and renowned Canadian writer George Ryga who wrote The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, probably the best known Canadian play. The Ryga household was always full of music, discussions, poetry and theatre,

and the love of language, learning, and expression. The Ryga Festival continues that tradition. The festival is a multi discipline celebration drawing artists from across Canada to come together in Summerland. With a vast and varied array of fantastic events staged at indoor and outdoor venues, there is certainly something for everyone with an interest in the arts.
Events like Outspoken!, the Theatre Trail, or The Hootenanny, presented in the highest professional standards, encapsulate the creative spirit of the vibrant arts scene in Summerland, The 2019 Ryga Festival runs from August 24 to Sept 1, 2019 in various Summerland venues. ARTS & CULTURE Summerland has a long and rich visual arts history. In the early 1950s Summerland Art Club was founded and has been dedicated to celebrating, encouraging and displaying the rich tapestry of the Summerland visual arts community. The gallery has a stellar collection which includes works by artists Marjorie Croil, the founder of Summerland Art Club, Ivy Mason whose brass rubbings toured Canada in the 1970s, a drawing by internationally acclaimed artist Irvine Adams, and Bettina Somers’ watercolour and pen and ink sketches. The permanent collection, currently consisting of 50 works by 24 artists, reflects the history of artistic achievement in Summerland from the mid 20th century to the present day. Many of these paintings, prints and sculptures have historic associations with the local landscape and Summerland personalities.

ORNAMENTAL GARDENS
SUMMERLAND ORNAMENTAL GARDENS The Summerland Ornamental Gardens are a must visit during your time in the South Okanagan. Developed as a part of the Dominion Experimental Farm in 1916, the Gardens are an expanse of majestic trees, flowering shrubs and colourful beds of perennial and annual plants. This 6 hectare/15 acre heritage botanical garden is open to the public year round. The gardens are a special place for walks, hikes, picnics, and garden research. Spend an hour or a day as you explore the shade garden on a hot afternoon, picnic under a Kentucky

Coffee Tree, or commune with nature in the Three Bs (Birds, Bees and Butterflies) area. The gardens are now managed by the Friends of the Gardens with a focus on its large collection of drought-tolerant plants, providing habitat for bees and other pollinators and water wise alternatives to conventional lawn grasses. The Gardens are located at 4200 Highway 97 South, up the hill from the Summerland Research and Development Centre. SUMMERLAND MUSEUM & ARCHIVES The Summerland Museum and Archives is committed to the passionate exploration of Summerland's history. Since 1965 the Summerland Museum and Archives has been dedicated to collecting and preserving Summerland's history. The Summerland Museum and Archives displays objects that are historically significant to the community. These objects reflect the history of Summerland and the surrounding area, from the period from pre-contact, including Indigenous history, to the present.
Featuring a unique, 15 meter mural by local artist Bruce Crawford, the permanent exhibits explore the early history of development and settlement of Summerland. Rotating yearly, the temporary displays in the Tait Room look into historical issues and events important to the Summerland area within a regional, national, and international perspective.

HISTORY Summerland is situated on the unceded and ancestral territory of the Syilx people of the Okanagan Nation EARLY HISTORY The Okanagan people have occupied the area for millenniums. Their traditional lifestyle revolved around seasonal resources. The Okanagan people first interacted with European settlers through the fur trade mostly in the sale and trading of horses. Located on the shores and benches above Okanagan Lake the mild climate and fertile soil made Summerland an attractive investment location for wealthy British businessmen. Newcomers wanted to acquire the fertile land from local First Nations groups. A series of oral agreements were made with Okanagan people, agreements which were later broken as white settlers gradually attained land in what is now known as Summerland.
SETTLEMENT BEGINS Much of the land around Summerland was acquired by white settlers through a process known as pre-emption. Similar to squatters’ rights, pre-emption allowed an individual to receive full title to a section of land by living on it for six months of every year and making improvements. SUMMERLAND The name “Summerland” appeared in 1902 with the opening of a post office on the shores of Lake Okanagan. In 1903 the Summerland Development Company was formed to build a town site on the lakeshore. The Summerland Development Company made the new town a prosperous one. Wealthy railway executives bought fruit farms in Summerland causing the town to progress quickly. The Company provided various amenities to the lakeshore town and by 1905 residents had water, septic tanks, electricity, a school, and a sawmill.
KETTLE VALLEY RAILWAY With the completion of the Kettle Valley Railway in 1916 the area was opened up to the west coast and the rest of Canada, which was especially important for the fruit and poultry markets. AGRICULTURE To help aspiring farmers and orchardists, many of whom had little experience with the practicalities of fruit farming, the Dominion Experimental Farm was opened near Summerland in 1914. Fruit packinghouses were joined by canneries and other industries related to fruit growing. Collectively they were the major employers in the Summerland area. The first winery opened in 1981 at Sumac Ridge, and grape growing joined apples and stone fruits as a major Summerland crop.
