How to find us

Harrison Hot Springs is only a 90-minute drive east of Vancouver, and less than three hours north of Seattle.

The quickest route here is via Highway 1, taking exit 135 at Bridal Falls. For a slower pace, enjoy the Scenic 7 Hwy through Mission. Both Abbotsford International & Vancouver International Airports service our area, & docking facilities are available for float planes.

Harrison Hot Springs:

•H arrison Hot Springs is a world famous centre for Sasquatch activity and investigation. Learn more at our Sasquatch Museum located in the Visitor Centre. •O ur local sturgeon can grow over 14 feet in length, and weigh in excess of 1,500 pounds. •H arrison Lake is 60 km long & 279 metres in depth in some areas. Glacier-fed and ice cold year-round this lake is sparsely populated & boaters are urged to stay tuned to VHF channel 68. •O ur hot springs can be enjoyed year-round by visiting the indoor public pool or stay at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort, where the pools are sourced by the two hot springs at the sound end of the lake. •T he Potash spring has a temperature of 40˚C (120˚F) and the Sulphur spring is 65˚C (150˚F). View the source by walking along the west side of the lake.

•H arrison Hot Springs is a mecca for musicians and artists, who flock to the area each year for the Harrison Festival of the Arts.

HARRISON HISTORY

•W hen gold was first discovered on the Fraser in 1858, there was an explosion of activity with miners from around the world racing to B.C. to find their fortunes. •A s there were no roads into the interior, the first and only route to the gold fields was by sternwheeler up the Fraser and Harrison Rivers, up Harrison Lake to the newly established town of Port Douglas. Disembarking there, miners faced a long and arduous journey over 162 km (100 miles) of rough tracks and more lakes to Lillooet. •W hen the Caribou road was built in 1863 through the Fraser Canyon to Barkerville, this difficult water route was eventually abandoned. Although the gold rush faded, Harrison Hot Springs continues to flourish!

PADDLING For a relatively safe adventure, canoe the Miami River through the Village or head to Hicks Lake. The Harrison River is an incredible outdoor wilderness trip that takes you past stunning scenery. While Harrison Lake can also be paddled, it can be extremely treacherous with high winds and large waves, and should only be attempted by experienced paddlers.

Harrison Lake is the largest lake in southwestern BC. The lake is glacier-fed, is about 60 km long and 9 km across at its widest point covering approximately 250 square kilometres. Weather and water conditions play a big role in your safety on the water. Before heading out on the lake, make sure you get the latest forecast. You should also be aware that Harrison Lake is known for its unpredictable weather conditions and like many other Canadian lakes, water temperatures can be very cold particularly in the spring. The effects of cold water immersion are not to be ignored and wearing a PFD is absolutely essential. If you wish to do some recreational boating or participate in the many water sports, please make sure you have knowledge of boating safety, practices and behaviors before you embark on these activities. HARRISON LAKE

Harrison Lake is much longer than it appears when you look at it from Harrison Hot Springs. At 60 kilometres long, it covers over 250 square kms. While it is now a freshwater lake, thousands of years ago it was not a lake at all, but an arm of the sea. It varies in depth from just a few feet to a maximum depth of 279 m. (916 ft.). It supports a rich bio-diversity of both seasonal and permanent animal species including: Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Pink, Chum, Coho, Sockeye, and Chinook Salmon, Sturgeon, Harbor Seals, Canadian Geese, Great Blue Heron, and too many different types of waterfowl to list. While the Lillooet River is the main waterway flowing into the lake, the lake also receives a constant supply of cold clear water from Mount Breckenridge glacier. The lake can be cold particularly in winter although in August it offers a refreshing swim. As well, storms can make the lake a dangerous place to be, so exercise caution and common sense when boating or paddling.

The perfect place to Walk, Run, Hike or Bike.

If you’re the type to be inspired by nature, welcome to paradise. Every hill and valley, every trail and riverside, is waiting to be discovered here. But there are a few things you should know before heading into the great outdoors. The Harrison Hikers have been meeting weekly for the past 20 years. Each week, they set out on various levels of hikes, from easy walks along dike systems to advanced treks into the woods.

IF YOU GO, HERE ARE A FEW WORDS FROM THOSE WISE WALKERS • Never hike alone • Travel in groups of at least four • Hike at the speed of the slowest member of the group • Stay on the trail • Keep pets on leash at all times

• Resist the temptation to collect trees, plants or flowers • Never approach or feed bears or other wild animals • Always pack out what you take in. Don’t bury your trash

• Tell someone where you are going and when you will return • Carry a cell phone or VHF radio to communicate, if possible • Respect wildlife

A walk around our lagoon is a good place to start. Other pleasant walks include the Heritage Walk past the older buildings in town and the Miami Bridges Walk through an oldgrowth cedar forest.

GO FOR A WINTER WALK Harrison is close to two family-friendly hills, Sasquatch Mountain and Manning Park Resort. Both offer great snowshoeing trails, skiing and sledding through the winter months.

It’s the magnificent scenery that makes Harrison Hot Springs such a special place to visit. The best way to appreciate its beauty is to walk or hike on the many trails in and around the Village, and soon your senses will be on overload.

BEAR SAFETY: Most bears will

leave if they are aware of a group’s presence so make some noise. Stay in the open as much as possible. Keep children close at hand on trails. If you do meet a bear, don’t run and do keep calm. Make a wide detour and leave the animal a way to escape.

Deep in the heart of “Sasquatch Country” you will find North America’s largest gathering of Bald Eagles. Starting in October the raptors are drawn to the area by the millions of spawning salmon that travel up the Fraser River to tributaries such as the Harrison River. Their numbers peak in November and December. In December of 2010, 7,362 Bald Eagles were counted in a small section of this area. Over 10,000 were estimated to be in the normal Festival count area from Harrison Bay northward along the Harrison River to the Chehalis Flats. This incredible world record

aggregation of a large predator is an annual event. The estuary is also home to incredible wildlife such as Trumpeter Swans, ducks, seals, bears, coyotes, deer, cougars, and the Great White Sturgeon. To celebrate this incredible seasonal event, the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival kicks off the third weekend in November. The Bald Eagle Festival weekend in November matches the build-up which peaks in December and wanes, as the salmon carcasses are eaten up, through January and February. What really drives the eagles to our area is the freezing up

of the northern rivers – the eagles can’t get at the dead salmon under the ice. Southward the eagles come by the thousands and our incredibly productive Chehalis – Harrison River complex provides food for thousands of eagles, usually for months. While the eagles can be viewed from the shores of the Harrison River the best viewing is on the river itself. Both Shoreline Tours and Harrison Eco Tours offer Eagle Tours on the Harrison river during this incredible event.

For a truly amazing sight, visit Weaver Creek spawning channel in October, in Harrison Mills. You will be treated to the beauty of red and green salmon spawning by the thousands.

The mountains around Harrison provide spectacular waterfalls. Rainbow Falls — a truly remarkable gem hidden at the base of Slocan Mountain, accessible by a 20-minute boat ride. Bridal Veil Falls, the sixth largest in Canada, is a short 20-minute drive from Harrison.

Sasquatch COUNTRY

Described as a bi-pedal mammal of exceptional size (sometimes reaching 14’) with great strength and reddish hair covering its entire body, the Sasquatch is legendary in Harrison Hot Springs with many regional sightings. The word Sasquatch is thought to be a mispronunciation of the Sts’ailes First Nations word ‘Sasq’ets’, meaning ‘hairy man’. For centuries, the Sasquatch has occupied a unique niche in the oral traditions of the First Nations communities of Harrison Lake and Harrison River. The Sts’ailes believe the Sasquatch is a spiritual being that can vanish into the spirit realm at will, which may explain why the elusive being is so difficult to track down. The home of the Harrison Sasquatch and location of some sightings are the caves of Mystery Valley on the West Side of Harrison

Lake. Local lore says the Sasquatch hold a reunion every four years, beginning on the night of the full moon in July. For four nights in succession the Sasquatch meet and signal fires are kept burning. The last year fires were seen burning was 1940, however reported sightings in the area have been as recent as 2009. Harrison Hot Springs is not only home to the Sasquatch but also to Sasquatch Days, a great weekend celebration. This annual event brings the local Sts’ailes First Nation band to Harrison for a weekend of canoe races, salmon barbeque and Sasquatch story telling.

Harrison has a long history of passionate Sasquatch investigators including the legendary Mr. Sasquatch, John Green. Check him out in the award winning Sasquatch Odyssey - The Hunt for Bigfoot DVD. The history of the Harrison Hot Springs region stretches back for thousands of years with our local First Nation people. Harrison Hot Springs was revered as the “healing place” by the local First Nation long before they were “discovered” by Europeans in the 1800s. During the 1850s Gold Rush, Harrison Lake was the intitial route most prospectors took to the gold fields, taking a paddlewheeler from New Westminster they would follow the Fraser, then head up the Harrison River and Harrison Lake to Port Douglas. From Port Douglas to Lillooet, a mixed land and water route was built named the Douglas Road, aka the Lillooet Trail, Harrison Trail or Lakes Route. During its rowdy heyday,

Port Douglas had thousands of residents. Many of the BC mainland’s first companies had their start here, including the famous B.X. Express and other major freighting companies. These companies relocated to the Fraser Canyon with the completion of the Cariboo Wagon Road in the mid-1860s. Settlers are said to have ‘discovered’ the hot springs in 1858 while enroute to the gold fields. Their boat capsized, expecting to meet their doom in the

frigid waters, they instead discovered that the lake at that spot was not freezing... but rather warm. Local First Nations called the Hot Springs Kwals, meaning boiling water. The hot springs were revered as a “healing place” by natives of the Coast Salish people, who traveled by canoe to benefit from their waters.
