T
he start of a new year brings an opportunity to reflect, recharge and refresh. As we look forward to what 2019 will bring, I am filled with optimism and excitement as our business — and family — continues to grow. At the end of last year, our business and family were presented with some new opportunities to expand our offerings across the island as well as on the mainland (you can read more about this on page 10). Moving into 2019 we will be looking at how we can grow both these new services and all our current services to better serve you — our customers — which is always our goal.

The Little Theatre that Could T
he Chemainus Theatre Festival is one of those great places that, once discovered, becomes a spot you want to return to again and again. That’s probably why complete runs here often sell out. The theatre has been offering regionally and internationally acclaimed productions since 1993. It is one of Western Canada’s largest theatre organizations and its charitable society plays host to over 70,000 residents and visitors every year. It does this by backing exceptional theatre that explores and nourishes the human spirit. “Many people come to me and say they had no idea this quality of show could exist
in such a small space,” says the theatre’s artistic director, Mark DuMez. “People are very pleased and surprised by the intimacy created at these shows. There’s a certain charm and a certain closeness that is thrilling in the storytelling.” It’s that charm and closeness that has created a solid following for the theatre. With Chemainus located mid Vancouver Island — just an hour or so drive from Victoria — the theatre draws patrons from all over the south, central and north island. “The great thing about this location is that we get a lot of cross island traffic,” says DuMez. “A lot of people use this as
a meeting place. Friends from the north island meet their friends from the south island to spend some enjoyable time together. It’s a great day trip or even a weekend trip for a getaway.” Many patrons use Wilson’s Transportation by chartering a bus for their group or friends for a getaway that includes live theatre. Groups are dropped off and picked up in front of the theatre on a day trip, or have the option of staying the entire weekend. I chose to drive for my day trip to the Chemainus Theatre production of Little Women, which ran until December 30. Immediately, I noticed that while the

Add to that the professional actors, and you’ve got yourself a first-rate theatre experience. “Our actors come from all over Canada, but we concentrate on actors from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, as there aren’t that many professional actors in Chemainus,” says DuMez. “Building of the sets, costumes and props and all the rehearsing is done right here in Chemainus. I like to think of it as an island-based cultural centre. Little Women is a great example of the calibre of our shows. We adapted it at the theatre festival 13 years ago and have new music. It’s a lovely chamber telling of the story — a musical with holiday elements within the show.” The Chemainus Theatre is much more than a place to go and see live theatre. building houses an art gallery, funky gift shop, lounge and restaurant with live music and great service. Patrons can choose from brunch or dinner before the play. The Playbill Dining Room is set up buffet-style and has a tantalizing selection of culinary choices, inspired by the production playing at the time. On Friday nights, it offers the Table d’hôte menu, featuring a plated meal service with four different menu items from which to choose. In addition to putting on great plays, serving delicious food and displaying wares in an art gallery and a gift shop, there are also workshops. The Chemainus Theatre offers Island Savings Discover Theatre Workshops throughout Vancouver Island. These create growth opportunities for young artists through week-long theatre intensives. They also support emerging artists, technicians and
administrators via work studies and apprenticeships. The 2019 lineup at the theatre has a little bit of everything, including musicals, comedies and dramas that examine themes of identity, calling and compassion. “In concert with the supporting work of food, festivity and artistic enrichment, the Chemainus Theatre Festival Experience continues to feed the heart and soul of Vancouver Island,” says DuMez. The Sound of Music runs from February 15 to April 6 and is followed by The Foreigner, April 18 to May 9. For the warmer months May 24 to August 31), there’s Mamma Mia, destined to be a sing-along favourite. Next fall, September 13 to October 5, is Mrs. Warren’s Profession followed by Lumberjacks in Love from October 18 to November 2. To wind up the year, it’s Miracle on 34th Street from November 15 to December 29. Wilson’s buses leave from Victoria and groups can book by emailling sales@wilsonstransportation.com. t’s a gorgeous, sunny day in Vancouver and on Granville Island a busker is playing guitar on the street corner as the rich aroma of freshly baked bread wafts in the air. Granville Island is a long-time favourite destination for tourists to the city, but its treasures can remain enigmatic unless you know where to go and why you’re there in the first place. One great way to experience the island’s charms is on a foodie tour: a two-hour, taste-as-you-go guided excursion that leads you to eight of the culinary highlights. We began our tour at the Edible Canada Bistro over a taster of farm-raised sturgeon rubbed in Moroccan Marrakech spice. “At Edible Canada, 70 per cent of the ingredients are sourced locally in British Columbia, 20 per cent come from other regions of Canada and 10 per cent from elsewhere in the world,” said our guide, Nadia Cameron, who works as a private chef when she’s not conducting foodie tours. As we savoured our first course, she explained that Granville Island began as a waste fill and an industrial area, gradually morphing into a scene for restaurants, entertainment and a fresh food marketplace in the late 1960s. “Ten million visitors come here each year, but 85 per cent of the traffic is comprised of locals,” she said. The island generates over $200 million in annual revenue and is home to some 300 vendors. To earn a retail space here, your product must have been made in British Columbia. Most of the tour is on foot, with stops at a variety of different vendors. At JJ Bean Coffee we sample a cup of java called Dangura. Its bean is grown in Ethiopia and roasted by the company’s master roaster. The coffee varieties at JJ Bean change according to the time of year and seasonality of the bean. At A Bread Affair we giggle at the bread names: a sourdough called Soulmate, an olive loaf titled “Olive you Forever,” one called Missionary and another called Happily Ever After. The first artisan organic bakery in the province, its owners gave up high-tech jobs in California, drove north to Vancouver and, finding the bread quality lacking, began baking their own. were recently named the most talented and diversely gifted meat-makers in North America by the New York Times. Fifthgeneration charcuterie makers, their product selection includes Canadian wild boar, smoked bison and venison prosciutto. “This is the busiest stand in the market,” Nadia declared. Our tour moved quickly with tasters of rich, crumbly cheese from Benton Brothers Fine Cheese and deliciously crisp ambrosia apples from a fruit stand. At Granville Island Tea Company we sipped heavenly masala chai lattes — beverages that smelled like Christmas and tasted like dessert. And outside Lee’s Donuts we watched as dough was kneaded, rolled and shaped before being tossed in the deep fryer and coated with icing. Back at Edible Canada we finished with a sweet finale of maple syrup tasters. The foodie tour is a great appetite-whetter for the rich selection of products on Granville Island. Tour guides relate the story behind the product, giving guests a taste of the culinary gem itself, but also of its BC origins and the folks behind the craft. Ride the bus! Wilson's new routes open up Vancouver Island and Whistler, bc
T
he Wilson’s Group of Companies has announced new bus routes, opening up new destinations to its customers. Late last year, Wilson’s was awarded the Whistler route, helping to fill the void left by the Greyhound bus company’s departure in Western Canada. Wilson’s is also now involved in the ownership of the Tofino Bus Company, with routes all over Vancouver Island. The BC Connector to Whistler will operate out of Vancouver at Pacific Central Station, creating a new connection to this community from Victoria and Vancouver. “Our team at Wilson’s is happy to have been approved … for this route and we are excited to see the possibilities this will create for our company. It is a great addition to our BC Ferries Connector — the scheduled service between downtown Victoria and downtown Vancouver — as well as the Box to Bus freight service that we operate in conjunction with Tofino Bus,” said John Wilson, owner and CEO of the Wilson’s Group of Companies. The Wilson family announced its involvement in the ownership of the Tofino Bus late last year. “I knew [owner] Dylan Green when he first started Tofino Bus
and have worked alongside him for quite some time,” Wilson said. “When the discussions started about an acquisition, this seemed like the right fit. Our family is excited about the opportunities Tofino Bus will bring and look forward to working with Dylan and his team.” Tofino Bus started in 2002 as an inter-city bus and charter service, and in 2015 the company expanded to include the entire island as well as a freight service in partnership with Greyhound, to ship packages on and off the island. Tofino Bus employs 41 people who will remain working under the company, Green said, adding, “Our team is excited to be part of a larger group of companies. This will allow for more resources and support to continue growth.” Wilson’s has been a part of the community since 1962 and is proud to be family owned and operated to this day. The company has seen a lot of growth in the past couple of years and is now the largest motor coach charter and transportation company on Vancouver Island, and second largest privately held bus transportation company in BC. I got my first taste of the hotel business when I was 17 at the then Canadian Pacific Empress Hotel, in my home town of Victoria. I was a doorman for four months. I returned to the hotel business in 1988 as a shore rep for Princess Cruises, based primarily at Le Meridien Hotel (now The Sutton Place Hotel). Hired on as a doorman, I became a bellman within a year, but I always wanted to be a concierge. Within my third year, I was behind the Concierge Desk as Assistant Concierge and moved my way up to my present position as Assistant Chef Concierge.”

Where would you schedule a business meeting? GA: At The Sutton Place Hotel, of course!
We have wonderful meetings rooms that are all very spacious and have natural light.
What restaurant(s) really shows off Vancouver? MK: Five Sails, Coast and West Restaurant. GA: There are so many but definitely our
hotel dining room, Boulevard Seafood and Oyster Bar, which just won best seafood restaurant. (And our Chef Alex Chen just won the Iron Chef competition!) It is a true West Coast restaurant with all local ingredients from around the city. Other restaurants that showcase Vancouver would be Ancora Waterfront Dining and Patio, with its great views of False Creek and the seawall, and Seasons in the Park for its West Coast cuisine and stunning views of the city.
Where’s a great place to take young children? MK: The Vancouver Aquarium and
Grouse Mountain anytime of year. In the winter, Grouse Mountain for the Peak of Christmas. It’s magical! GA: There are so many great places to take
children around the city. Try biking around the seawall and Stanley Park with a stop at the aquarium. Rainy days call for Science World for all the interactive displays and then a showing of Fly Over Canada, an Imaxstyle adventure across our great country.
Where would you find a unique shopping experience? MK: Gastown — it’s great to explore the
one-of-a-kind shops and lifestyle stores. Also, check out 4th Avenue in Kitsalano. GA: Granville Island Public Market for all the crafts and unique First Nations wares.
Where do you take friends for a drink? MK: Reflections, with its classy warm
setting, and 1927 Lobby Lounge, both at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. 1927 Lobby lounge is perfect on chilly winter evenings. GA: I love the rooftop at Lift Bar and Grill with the sweeping views of Stanley Park and the harbour. In the winter months, I like the Gerard Lounge, with its dark wood and fireplace.
What’s the perfect date spot in Vancouver? MK: In the warmer months, definitely a
picnic at Sunset Beach. Get a picnic basket from the hotel and wine from the Sutton Wine Merchants, and enjoy a spectacular sunset over the distant islands.
What’s a great winter activity in Vancouver? GA: We are so lucky to have Grouse
Mountain, just a 20-minute drive away. There you can ski, snowshoe and ice skate with the dramatic views of downtown.
What’s the craziest question you’ve ever been asked as concierge? MK: Guest: “Can you buy some lingerie for
my wife for our honeymoon? She is very snoopy. I want to surprise her with the lingerie, two dozen red roses and the best chocolates in Vancouver.” Me: “I can help you sir. Do you know her size?” Guest: “No.”
What’s the craziest thing you’ve had to do as concierge? GA: After the horrific attacks of 9/11, a
Hollywood actress could not get down to LA to see her baby, and since there were no flights, we arranged to have her breast milk transferred via limousine.

Vancouver International Wine Festival

Whine no more — the wine world is coming to Vancouver for one of the biggest and oldest wine events in the world. The Vancouver International Wine Festival is Canada’s premier wine show, featuring 160 wineries from more than a dozen countries. This year, a plethora of California wines will be the main attraction, with a special tasting room sectioned off for sampling these treasures. fter acquiring several new bus routes, Wilson’s Transportation is better equipped than ever to get snow-lovers to winter destinations such as Mount Washington Alpine Resort on Vancouver Island, Big White in Kelowna, Whistler Blackcomb, and several Lower Mainland mountains. Ski resorts in British Columbia went on a spending spree as they prepared for the 2018-19 season. At Whistler Blackcomb, owner Vail Resorts spent $66 million to add a new gondola on Blackcomb and undertake several other lift infrastructure upgrades.
On Vancouver Island, Mount Washington Alpine Resort has introduced hands-free RFID technology for pass holders. The new, chip-enabled system will reduce lift lineups and also allow guests to reload their lift tickets and season passes online. Mount Washington is preparing for summer as well, investing $3.5 million in a new zipline tour that will debut later this year. Here’s a rundown of what’s happening this winter at several of BC’s alpine resorts. Mount Washington Alpine Resort
Mount Washington Alpine Resort on Vancouver Island is known across North America for its steep runs and deep snow — a legendary 10.5 metres of annual snowfall. Mount Washington’s winter guests enjoy five chairlifts, five carpet lifts accessing more than 1,700 acres and 1,657 vertical feet of alpine terrain. If Nordic skiing is more your scene, Raven Lodge lies at the edge of Paradise Meadows. It’s a treasure trove of 55 kilometres of groomed runs for cross-country skiing and 25 kilometres of snowshoeing trails. Mount Cain
Mount Cain, located on Northern Vancouver Island (roughly half-way between Campbell River and Port McNeill), boasts of having the best powder on Vancouver Island, receiving 1,500 centimetres (38 feet) annually. Mount Cain is run by a society and has retained its small-hill charm. It operates on Saturdays and Sundays, with T-bar and handle tow lifts open on Mondays for school groups. Its runs are a mix of 45 per cent intermediate, 20 per cent beginner and 35 per cent advanced. mountcain.com

Whistler Blackcomb
Whistler Blackcomb is an entire village built around having fun both on and off the snow. Located 125 kilometres (78 miles) north of Vancouver, this resort municipality is self-contained, offering myriad accommodation, places for après ski activities and options for foodies. With a village-sized layout, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by all your options. Where do you go? What do you see and ski first? The resort has CIBC Mountain Hosts who give orientation tours to visitors starting at 11:15 am at the Roundhouse Lodge. For the price of a pass or day ticket, you can take a tour of both Whistler and Blackcomb, including a ride on the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. Mount Seymour is a family-run ski hill located a 30-minute drive from Vancouver in Mount Seymour Provincial Park. If you’re looking for a laid-back, West Coast ski experience, this is where you’ll find it. Cypress Mountain
Cypress Mountain is arguably the largest of ski hills located in the Lower Mainland, near Vancouver. Established in 1975, Cypress offers a vast terrain for alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing. Cypress is comprised of three mountains: Mt. Grouse Mountain
Grouse Mountain will celebrate 25 years during the 2018-19 season. The mountain, located on Vancouver’s North Shore, features six terrain parks from beginner to advanced for skiers and boarders alike. General Manager of Britannia Brewing Company, a craft brewery located in Steveston Village, near Richmond in the Lower Mainland. Where are you from and how did you get to Vancouver?
I am from Richmond BC, but most of my family lives in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Growing up, I spent most summers in Belfast. My parents would alternate each year taking me back. When my school teachers asked where I was going for summer holidays, they would never believe my response. Belfast was going through what is now known as “The Troubles.” It was quite an eye-opener to spend a month or two every year in that setting, and then to come home to what would be considered “Pleasantville” by comparison. How did you get to BritanNia Brewing?
Britannia Brewing was an idea that was tossed around for three or four years before it came to fruition. We opened in August 2016. It really feels like six months max — very hard to believe we are approaching two and a half years! It has been such a fun ride, and getting to know the local community of Steveston has been an honour. Regardless of where you live in Victoria or southern Vancouver Island, and regardless of what your background is or what issues you may face, United Way of Greater Victoria is there to help.” The organization has offered support to people living in the Capital Regional District for more than 80 years. Since its inception in 1937, the group has invested $123 million to build a strong network of programs and services that focus on three key areas: youth empowerment, poverty reduction and resilient neighbourhoods. “Over time, United Way has evolved with the times, addressing long-term issues as well as responding to emerging issues,” Hasham says. In 2017, for example, United Way helped approximately 87,000 people, assisting families struggling with poverty, helping kids get the best possible start in life and building stronger communities.
