On behalf of the City of Lacombe, I am pleased to present the 2018 Light Up the Night Guide. This publication contains the details on all the family-friendly festive fun events being held from November 29 – December 2. I have to admit that I am child at heart and look forward to the Christmas season each year. This festival in particular is a great way for our community to connect and celebrate the holidays together. I invite you to enjoy the many events and activities involved with this year’s edition of the festival. Take in family favourites including the Tim Horton’s Santa Claus Parade, Moonlight Madness and our many markets. Rediscover the Polar Express in 3D, take a dip at the pool and snap a picture with Jolly Old St. Nick. Watch the fireworks ignite over the fresh fallen snow, check out the It’s A Wonderful Life radio play, or eat to your heart’s content at the Christmas Brunch. New activities this year include roasting chestnuts at the Michener House and Story Time at the Mary C Moore Library. I am happy to say that the Lacombe Flying Club will once again be offering its Twinkle Light Tours in support of the Lacombe Food Bank. Hanging with the
Claus
It’s that wonderful time of year again! When we all smile a little brighter, laugh a little louder, and get into the Holiday Spirit. I can’t wait to visit Lacombe for the annual Tim Horton’s Santa Claus Parade. Each year, regardless of the weather, people fill the streets to celebrate the arrival of the holidays. I’m happy to say that this year I have a surprise for you. While Rudolph is notoriously shy around crowds and cameras, he gave me permission to create an inflatable in his likeliness. I did get a little carried away, so keep an eye open for our giant friend during the parade. He will be hard to miss. Ho, Ho, Ho! I also received a request from one of your local children to kick it ‘old school’. So, after a bit of pondering, I am excited to say that this year I will be wearing one of my favourite retro suits (is that ‘old school’ enough?). If I remember correctly, the last time I wore it was back in 1910, when I temporarily was lost in the Aurora Borealis – that’s the fancy name for the Northern Lights. Thankfully,
one of my reindeer was able to follow Haley’s Comet back to safety. I named that trusty steed Comet and she has been with my team ever since. One more thing, we brought along a special chair that should be able to magically accomodate you, your family and myself for that great Selfie with Santa station of yours. Be sure to visit me after the parade for a quick picture. Oh, I almost forgot. Please, please, please bring your letters down to the parade. My friends at Canada Post will once again be collecting them along the parade route, so they can make the long journey with me to the North Pole. So… You better watch out. You better not cry Better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town.

In keeping with recent tradition, the fireworks display will not be held until a few days before Christmas. This allows families to celebrate with family and friends The lake should be fully frozen by then so people can skate and toboggan. We will have the fire pits on hand to keep everyone toasty, and the Tim Hortons will be onsite with their community truck providing hot chocolate and coffee for all. Every year, the Lacombe Memorial Centre Lights Display grows in size and popularity. It has quickly become a holiday destination that’s not to be missed! This year will not be any different. With over 60,000 lights, our ‘feature’ tree and a special addition to the Echo Stage, our display will help the holidays to shine bright.
Of course, there is a lot of work that goes into setting up the annual lights display every year. Plan the best parade experience
From what to pack to where to park, a little planning will go a long way come Parade Day.
Don’t forget your letters for Santa! Canada Post is excited to be collecting your letters to Santa along the parade route. To help you get started, we have provided a special festive letterhead on Page 26.
Brrrr ... It’s cold!
You just never know what the weather will be like on Parade Day. So dress in lots of layers. Fill a backpack with gloves, scarves, and hats. Santa takes his time and you can get cold waiting outside – so come prepared.
Best place to see the parade?
There isn’t a bad spot along the parade route, just busy ones. Be sure to arrive early as spots can fill up fast.

While there may be no parking right along the parade route, there are public parking lots nearby. Check out the festival map for a complete list of available public parking.
