Free family-oriented holiday experience From November 17 to December 24, families can enjoy Merry and Bright, a free interactive holiday experience held at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre in Abbotsford. The first floor of the former Sears location will be transformed into a holiday wonderland filled with festive fun, Christmas tree displays and live entertainment on the Sound of the Season Stage. “We wanted to create a family-oriented experience that was different and fun, as well as give back to the community,” said marketing director Tricia Schmuland. Featured activities include Letters to Santa, Craft Cabin and a Toy Station. There will also be cookie decorating for $1 per cookie at Sugar Town Bakery. Families who participate in the scavenger hunt will receive a chance to win a $2,000 travel prize. Sevenoaks Shopping Centre has expanded their annual Trees of Hope program for Merry and Bright. The decorated trees will be displayed throughout the experience in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley and the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation.
“Year after year Trees of Hope brings the community together for some festive fun in support of local charities,” said Liz Harris, executive director of the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation. Launched in 2009, the Trees of Hope community program provides Abbotsford businesses with the opportunity to share in the spirit of giving during the holidays. Donations for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley and the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation will be accepted throughout the eve Merry and Bright will host several other events throughout its run including Santa’s Arrival with Clifford the Elf and Friends on November 17, Communitas Movie Night on November 24, Big Brothers and Sisters Pillow Painting Party on November 27 and It’s a Wonderful Breakfast for the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation on December 6. While Santa may visit the Merry and Bright interactive holiday experience throughout its run, photos with Santa will be located in the Gap Court as usual. From November 17 through December 24, families can enjoy Merry and Bright during regular shopping centre hours. Located at
32900 South Fraser Way, the experience will take around an hour to wind through the different parent-supervised stations. Complimentary tickets are available at

’Tis the Season to Lend a Helping Hand Volunteers & Donations Needed over the Holidays
For too many Canadians, the necessities of life needed for basic human dignity are out of reach. Poverty is the root cause that puts dignity out of reach for millions of Canadians, making access to everyday needs, like food, clothing and shelter, difficult. Funds raised through donations made at Christmas kettles, together with other sources of funds, help provide direct, compassionate, hands-on service to over 1.9 million people each year in Canada, restoring hope and dignity to those who might otherwise remain invisible in society.

Harvest Salad with Apples This salad from Half-Baked Harvest combines all the best produce that fall has to offer into one big beautiful salad. Shredded kale, crisp apples, pomegranate, pumpkin seeds, and crispy prosciutto. Usually, I adapt and change ingredients, but this combination is perfect and the caramelized shallot vinaigrette is delicious. Mix up the greens if you like, but using all kale ensures the leftovers (if there are any!) are still crisp for lunch the next day. Healthy, simple and delicious, this salad is my new favourite fall staple. INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon maple syrup 1/3 cup unsalted pumpkin seeds 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto 2 heads kale, shredded 2 apples, thinly sliced, Honeycrisp or Pink Lady are perfect arils (seeds) from 1 pomegranate 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese Handful of dried cranberries CIDER VINAIGRETTE 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 large or 2 small shallots, thinly sliced 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons fig preserves, I prefer Dalmatia Fig Spread

The Farmer and the Foodie Farmer Rob and I are privileged to currently be traveling in Vietnam on an agriculture/ horticulture tour. Today our group was visiting a garden village and with the help of a translator, chatted with two of the farmers. After many technical questions, we asked what his greatest farming challenge was and without hesitation he answered “weather”. We erupted in laughter and applause, as each one of us would answer the same way. The more I see of the world, the more I discover that despite unique cultural differences, people the world over share so many commonalities. Farmers globally continue to be challenged by unpredictable weather. Mothers and fathers desire the best for their families and work hard at finding a piece of fertile land to grow food, and (almost) everyone enjoys smiling and waving for foreigners taking pictures. Vietnam’s sidewalks are filled with seemingly endless vendors selling odds and ends and cooking food. Diners sit on tiny plastic
tables and chairs enjoying boiling hotpots and steaming pho, but the cheerful conversations and laughter of people connecting over a shared meal is the same as you hear in trendy rendy sidewalk cafes es at home. This s recipe may not be Vietnamese Satu rd street food, but & Su ay, Dec. 1 nday it’s a wonderful , Dec 11:00 .2 am-4 recipe to share :00 p m with friends. Ingredients like crisp, local apples, salty feta and crunchy kale create a perfect combination of taste and texture for a beautiful fall salad. Add a hearty soup and you’ve got a delicious dinner to share with friends.

Gray is here to stay Decorating a home in neutral tones has long been recommended as a way to sell a home quickly. But the colour gray also provides a blank canvas for homeowners who have no intention of putting their homes on the market anytime soon. Design experts advise that gray has a broad range. Gray can include everything from silver to charcoal to a dusty cloud. According to the trendsetters at Glidden Paints, gray coordinates well with other colors. Plus, the neutral appeal of gray boasts a timeless quality.

dabbling in gray elsewhere. Designers have shown how gray does not have to be cold, industrial or gloomy. It can be sophisticated in just about any room of the house. More designers are now leaning toward warmer variations of gray, such as taupes and blends dubbed “greige,” that are beautiful but not as stark as pure gray.
Gray is not a clear-cut colour that’s simply a 50-50 blend of white and black. Gray has subtle nuances that can lean toward blues, greens, taupes, and more depending on the lighting and surrounding furnishings. That means that homeowners who are ready to replace their furniture or accessories need not necessarily repaint if they’ve previously decorated in shades of gray. Individuals need only replace small items to produce a big effect in rooms where gray is dominant. Because gray is so neutral, it works with soft, calming colors in various pastels, but equally as well with bright reds, yellow and oranges, according to Scott Bodenner, a Brooklyn-based textile designer. Gray also is a predominant colour in natural stones used throughout homes in entryways, bathrooms and kitchens. It can make design sense to maintain continuity throughout by

What is obesity? Obesity is characterized by excess or abnormal body fat that can impair your health. Many organizations including the Canadian Obesity Network, the Canadian Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the World Health Organization now define obesity to be a chronic disease similar to diabetes or high blood pressure. It is defined as a neurobehavior disorder with a BMI (body mass index) of more than 30. Many people believe that the amount of fat in your body is only determined by what you eat and how much you exercise. But the reality is that obesity is a complex and chronic illness caused by
a number of different factors, including your environment, genes, hormonal, emotional health, lack of sleep, medical problems like sleep apnea or even some medications you may be on. Even with the same diet or the same amount of exercise, people will vary widely in the amount of body fat or weight at which their bodies settle. Obesity is considered a chronic disease because managing obesity is a lifelong process with the help of your healthcare provider. This is because your body tries to “defend” its fat stores to maintain your highest weight (this is what researchers call “starvation response”). The medical profession is be-

We are especially concerned about this epidemic which is now affecting our children. MediMax Health Center can help people get to a BMI index of less than 30. A new technology called SculpSure, fat destroying laser, is non-invasive and can target resistant fat deposit areas that do not respond to regular exercise and diet.
