Working man’s sports car is getting expensive but it is also getting to be one of the truly great cars of our time ...

The Mustang GT is a favourite of enthusiasts looking for some retro appeal but also world-class handling and intense amounts of power. To be honest, I am one of those fans. This is a car I lust after and need to get into my life on a more permanent basis! A quick look at the updated 2018 Mustang might seem like nothing has changed. It looks like a Mustang should, in this modern era, but the updates are more substantial under the body than on the body. On closer inspection there are a few changes, mostly at the front and rear of the Mustang. The nose of the car has been lowered, the grille has been reworked and the lighting now includes LED headlamps, fog lights, turn signals and daytime running lights. The rear lights are new and still feature the sequenced flashers also with LED technology. The front and rear bumpers have been tweaked, there are some new wheel choices, quad exhaust tips on GT models and new vibrant colour choices. The changes are modest but changing an already stunning car isn’t a good idea, leaving well enough alone was a wise choice. The same mild updates are true inside the Mustang. There is now an available digital
instrument cluster that can be customized to the driver’s tastes, plus it has a vast array of performance pages inside to give the driver visual appeal but also useful information. This digital dash is only available on the top Premium Plus Package but also comes with one of the most important updates in my opinion. This generation Mustang has always been a great looking car on the inside but Ford relies a little too much on hard, inexpensive feeling plastic, especially on the centre console between the front seats. With the Premium Plus Package this area is now covered with softertouch materials and where the driver’s knee rests it’s padded for comfort. This addition of soft-touch materials needs to be included on all Mustang cars not just the top model. The same is true for the radio systems. The base radio has a 4.3-inch screen, in order to get the radio the buyer really wants, which is the 8-inch Sync3 system, the buyer needs to spend more money. These small issues all fall away once the engine is cranked over and the driver gets to experience the wonderful updates that can’t be seen. The first to note is the previous Performance Package found in the GT model is now the standard suspension in the nonGT cars. For example, the base car is now
turbocharged, or what Ford calls its EcoBoost 2.3L 4-cylinder. This replaces the V6 as the base engine and it now has 310hp. The updated suspension and responsive turbo engine do make a marked difference. When pushed, this base car can be very rewarding to drive. What really transforms the base EcoBoost and the higher performance 5.0L Mustang GT is the addition of a new Performance Package that adds Magnoride or Magnetic Ride Control. This is an advanced adaptive suspension that has been used in the auto industry for years in all kinds of high-performance machines and now makes its way into Mustang. Magnetic Ride Control monitors the road up to one thousand times per second and can change the shocks up to one hundred times per second. To say that this addition changes the character of the Mustang is a vast understatement. The latest car was already a big improvement because of the addition of independent rear suspension but by adding this adaptive suspension makes this a world-class sports car. In fact, the Mustang is now the best selling sports car in the world. Whenever I travel to Europe I’m always pleasantly surprised by just how many Mustang’s are on the roads, which is a testament to what Ford is doing right. Ford continues to provide the Mustang with a 6-speed manual transmission and it would be my gearbox of choice because the new automatic is a 10-speed unit that has mixed results. Because Ford has added so many gears, the car always seams to be searching for just the right one for the job. When driving smoothly, at steady speed, the car will go to the highest gear possible to help save fuel.
The issue is when the driver wants to accelerate quickly; the car needs to change several gears in a very short period of time. The best way to get around this is to buy the manual. The Mustang GT, now with 460hp, Magnetic Ride Control and a manual transmission is pure driving bliss for those that
know how to drive a stick. The automatic is a necessary evil in today’s world but I’m not sold on the shift quality. The price of the Mustang has come up too. The new base Ecoboost coupe is roughly $29,000. The first GT trim starts at roughly $40,000 and the top Premium cope is over $47,000 with an additional $2,000 for the digital cockpit and soft-touch centre console. To get the Performance Package costs an additional $3,700 on all models. So, the working man’s sports car is getting expensive but it is also getting to be one of the truly great cars of our time. The Mustang has been around since 1964 1/2 but the latest 2018 might just be the best one yet. I’ll take mine in orange.

THE BULLITT MUSTANG WAS KEPT IN ITS ORIGINAL STATE BY ROBERT KIERNAN OF NEW JERSEY, WHO PAID $6,000 FOR THE CAR IN 1974. ACTOR STEVE MCQUEEN TRIED TO BUY THE CAR FROM KIERNAN SEVERAL TIMES. When it comes to keeping secrets, Sean Kiernan might just be the king. Somehow, he was able to keep under wraps the fact that his family has owned the Mustang hero car from the 1968 movie “Bullitt” since 1974. The Dark Highland Green 1968 Mustang is synonymous with actor Steve McQueen who was the epitome of car-driving action heroes of the day. His most iconic role was playing San Francisco detective Frank Bullitt in the thriller “Bullitt.” McQueen and the Mustang took part in one of the most celebrated car chases ever, a nearly10-minute battle in the streets San Francisco between Bullitt and a black Dodge Charger carrying two hit men. Spoiler alert: The chase ends with the thugs running the Charger into a gas station, where it explodes. The chase scene, shot years before the computer-generated graphics so commonplace today, was electrifying. It helped Frank P. Keller win an Academy Award for Film Editing, and the Library of Congress selected “Bullitt” for historical preservation in the United States National Film Registry. McQueen died of cardiac arrest in Ciudad,
Juarez, Mexico in 1980, but his Bullitt legacy has now come full circle. For the 2019 model year, Ford is offering a limited-edition Bullitt Mustang available in the Dark Highland Green hue of the original, or in black, like the Bullitt Dodge Charger. And, significantly, both the original Bullitt Mustangs used in the 1968 film have been located. The first was found in Baja California, Mexico, and restored last year. “My partner Googled the VIN,” body-shop owner and Mustang restorer Ralph Garcia Jr. told the Los Angeles Times newspaper in 2017. “That’s how he found out it was the “Bullitt” car. He said, “You can’t touch it!” So, Garcia restored the first Bullitt Mustang to its original glory. The second Mustang was never actually lost. Sean Kiernan’s father Robert spotted it in a classified ad in the back of Road & Track magazine in 1974 and purchased it for $6,000. For several years, the car served as his wife’s daily driver. McQueen tried to buy the car back from Kiernan, but was rebuffed on multiple occasions. The family kept the existence of the Bullitt Mustang a secret, mostly because it had fallen into disrepair and they wanted to make it roadworthy
before letting the world know about it. But Robert fell ill with Parkinson’s disease and Sean started a family, so the car remained in storage, even as Internet rumours began to circulate about its existence. “My whole life, I’ve never been able to say “Bullitt,” even around my wife’s family,” Sean told the Detroit Free Press newspaper. Was he tempted to sell the car for the reported value of US $4 million? “No. Not even close,” he told the Free Press, because to him the Mustang is not as much a movie car as it is a direct connection to his father. “It means way too much to me. If anybody could buy their dad back, I’m sure they would. And I will never let mine go.” When Robert Kiernan died in 2014, Sean inherited the car, which still needed repair. Ford Motor Co., helped, and at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Mich., the company introduced the 2019 Bullitt Mustang with the 1968 original right there on stage with it. Kiernan said he will show the Mustang at various museums and automotive venues across the United States, including the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and, perhaps, the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.

NISSAN New Nissan LEAF technology designed to reduce driver stress ... their jeans to buy the ‘base’ model.
Napa Valley, Ca – The big knock on the first generation of mass market electric vehicles was they caused range anxiety. You won’t find the term in any medical dictionary, but it was a general condition suffered by EV owners. They lived with the fear that when it came time to respond to a family emergency requiring them to drastically break with their normal daily driving pattern that there simply may not be enough gas left in the tank – so to speak. And it deterred, especially those with young children, from making the green choice in transportation. Since those early days, circa 2010, the drive has been to produce increased capacity batteries that charge more quickly and thus enable vehicles to travel farther afield. There have been major strides made to the point that Nissan now believes its new LEAF will allay those fears of conking out at the roadside. The new LEAF boasts a 37 percent power increase and a 40 percent increase in range. The market leader says its latest model will let you clock up 242 klicks before needing to plug in. Of course, Tesla S lovers will tell you they can cruise for at least another 200 kilometres but then most people don’t have a 100 grand in
The 2018 Nissan LEAF launch on the winding back roads of California wine country suggested the manufacturer had confidence in its boasts. The key to maximizing range, of course, is not to drive like a maniac with a lead foot. The reality is that many drivers won’t modify their driving style greatly, at least initially. However, by my simple arithmetical calculation I’m sure an average Chilliwack commuter to Downtown Vancouver could easily make the return journey on a full charge and pop back to the local store before supper to pick up that forgotten jug of milk! Then an eight-hour plug-in overnight will have the LEAF raring to go after brekky. Incidentally, a fast charger will boost the battery to 80 percent in just 40 minutes. All very exciting for those willing to plonk down $35,988-plus, less the $5,000 BC government rebate funded by other taxpayers (he said with a slight snarl). But, for me, the real excitement was found in the other technologies Nissan has incorporated, either as standard fare or optional extras. Before climbing aboard, I must say the new shape is far more pleasing on the eye than the first generation. But I won’t waste words
waxing lyrical about the streamlined and more aerodynamic shape, suffice to say it looks more mainstream in design. And I would no longer see the need to wear a paper bag over my head while driving it.

The geeks call it Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology rather than nifty drivers’ aids as an unimaginative plain speaker might dub ProPILOT Assist and e-Pedal. Both technologies are phenomenal and what makes them so is that they both have the potential for adoption in all cars not just EVs. Let’s start with the optional ProPILOT Assist which, when activated, can automatically control the desired distance to the vehicle in front, using a speed preset by the driver between 29 km/h and 100 km/h. It also keeps the vehicle centred in the lane. Other vehicles offer something similar but ProPILOT goes beyond just applying the brakes if the car ahead stops. After coming to a full stop, the car remains stationary even if the driver's foot is off the brake. If traffic restarts, the car will resume progress with just the lightest press on the pedal. All designed to improve safety and reduce the stress of driving in heavy traffic. But my admiration was secured by e-Pedal,
Interesting. Studies by Nissan in Japan, Europe and the U.S. show that e-Pedal dramatically reduces the number of times the driver must apply the brakes while commuting in heavily congested traffic. While the conventional brake pedal must still be used in emergency braking, the e-Pedal lets drivers use a single pedal for more than 90 percent of driving needs. Remarkable. The wine trail route weaved through small towns, along winding roads, up and down steep hills and on busy freeways. Cabin noise was minimal even at highway speeds, comfy seats, and the centre display offered easy access to audio and navigation. Actually, I felt relaxed when I climbed out. Sticker prices: The LEAF S starts at $35,988 and standard features include a Quick Charge Port, portable charge cable, e-Pedal and automatic emergency braking. The SV grade is $39,598 and adds ProPILOT Assist with Intelligent Cruise Control and Steering Assist, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The top of the range SL starts at $41,998 and adds leather appointed seats, Bose Premium audio system, Intelligent Around View Monitor and Driver Attention Alert.

While the car is happy to drive around town all day at suburban street speeds (yawn), it truly shines with the tach needle closer to the red line. The only limitation is you and those street signs. Hello Officer.
During my drive of the GT last year, I don’t recall thinking “hmm, this vehicle could do with a little more power.” And yet here we are. Thank you to the engineering folks at Benz and Co.
Human limitation is two, the driver and a passenger. From the outside the cabin looks cramped – it’s the exact opposite, with loads of leg and headroom. My friends with an NBA contract should be okay here. Put the roof down, an 11 second event, and the world’s tallest human will have unlimited headroom. The top is a single-button affair, locking in closed or open position automatically. With the top up or down, rear visibility with the Roadster is limited – not an issue as you will be looking forward most of the time. The GT C is based on the AMG GT introduced by Mercedes for the 2015 model year. Slotted above the GT model, the GT C provides smiles all around with more power and an approximate $28,000 price premium over the GT. The GT C makes sensational sounds when you push your right foot onto the pedal that’s connected to the throttle of a twin-turbo 4.0L V8, releasing 550 horses at 5750 rpm and 502 lb-ft of torque at a
Sometimes what’s missing is a good thing – an overassisted steering system is not on the Mercedes engineers to-do list. The steering is light, but rewards you with accuracy and feedback. Every curve is a smooth carving, with the car staying poised no matter what the road underneath is doing. The active rear-axle steering turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the fronts at speeds up to 100km/h, which essentially shortens the car’s wheelbase to improve cornering. Over 100 clicks, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front to improve high-speed stability. Push the throttle too hard in a turn though and you will be reminded this is a rear-wheel drive only machine. The electronic safety features will rein you in before you have to explain to your insurance company why guardrail paint is on your car and vice-versa.
