Nov. 11 ceremonies in Tofino and Ucluelet ANDREW BAILEY andrew.bailey@westerlynews.ca
On Nov. 11, the West Coast will gather to honour the heroes who fought for their freedom. âWe have a pretty good life in Tofino and itâs because of those veterans before us that we have that freedom and good life,â said Tofino councillor and Legion board member Duncan McMaster. âThis year is especially poignant because itâs the 100th anniversary of the First World WarâŚWe all learn things by our mistakes. If we forget, those mistakes are likely to be repeated and we can get led along by politicians into making those same mistakes.â Tofinoâs Remembrance Day Service will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. from the Tofino Fire Hall to St. Columba Church for a service before gathering outside the Tofino Legion around 10:45 a.m. for the flag raising and wreath laying ceremony. A luncheon will follow at the Legion hosted by the Ladiesâ Auxiliary. Rene Gibson of the Ladiesâ Auxiliary said Remembrance Day is a solemn time for the community and country to reflect. âItâs important for everyone here in Tofino,â she said. âEverybody appreciates what their fallen comrades have done. They lost their lives protecting everyone.â Continued on A8

HUNTING FOR FOOD: A mother black bear fishes for spawning salmon at Thornton Creek Hatchery at low tide last week. The mom was photographed from a viewing platform with her two cubs. A larger male black bear, believed to be the motherâs cub from a couple years ago, was also seen feeding on fish at the creek. Black bears on Vancouver Island do not truly hibernate in the winter, but enter a state more similar to a deep sleep.
