2018 JAGUAR E-Pace
The 2018 E-Pace is the first compact SUV that Jaguar has ever created — designed to go head to head with the fiercely competitive segment that includes the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Lexus NX, to name some.
BY DAVID CHAO The E-Pace brings heart-pumping excitement to this segment, thanks to beautiful design and aggressive stance and performance.
Design Poised with a muscular profile and a curved, chiseled hood, the E-Pace appears like a wild cat ready to pounce. This compact SUV is practical but it has the sporty look-and-feel you would find in a coupe. Subtle touch includes puddle lights in the doors that illuminate the ground with the Jaguar logo when the vehicle is unlocked, providing further brand visibility. The “honeycomb” mesh grille and high “butt” give the E-Pace a performance-oriented appearance from all angles.

The E-Pace comes with an intuitive All Wheel Drive system that effortlessly changes torque between front and back wheels as driving conditions change. This is due to a multiplate clutch that is located near the rear differential which combines the AWD system and Electronic Traction Control to give an agile and confident driving experience even in difficult driving conditions. Jaguar’s Active Driveline technology is also employed in the E-Pace by allowing up to 100 percent of rear axle torque to be spread out between both rear wheels with changing variables. To give you a sense of how this is working, a display is always available on your touchscreen in real time.
Perhaps the only challenge is that all this technology and features make the product somewhat complicated to use and figure out. You literally need to take a “class” to learn all these features. Overall, the interior is trendy and beautiful, although surprisingly cramped in the back seat.
Performance The 2018 Jaguar E-Pace comes with two “Ingenium” gas engine options. Jaguar is all about the “Art of Performance”, and this shines through with low-friction, aluminum engines designed to vibrate at low levels for an undeniably
Jaguar has focused on making the interior practical for the driver, with an emphasis on easy access and usability of controls and buttons so that the driver can relax and enjoy the exhilarating experience. Jaguar has paid attention to small design details that will delight the user. For example, the glovebox and centre console feature a discreet Jaguar print, and there is a Jaguar and cub design hidden in plain sight on the front windshield. On higher trim levels, animal print seat labels are available as well. Further interesting features include a powered gesture tailgate - a feature where you can open the trunk hands-free by placing your foot under a rear flank at the back of the vehicle. Jaguar has publicly announced their commitment to producing cars with less waste, using fewer natural resources and using sustainable materials. This should be a standard across all car makers but it is worth noting that Jaguar’s commitment is very public and backed up with numbers. For example, the 2018 E-Pace is designed to be 85% re-usable/ recyclable and up to 95% recoverable. While it is not a huge amount, the E-Pace contains up to 22lbs of recycled plastic, the equivalent of over 750 plastic bottles. The E-Pace engine manufacturing facility features the largest rooftop solar panel installation in any UK factory and provides more than 30% of the energy needed for production. Jaguar InControl provides a technologically advanced in-car experience and has many user-optimized features. One of these is an app called Remote (for your smartphone, Android Wear or Apple Watch) and can remotely lock/unlock your vehicle, pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin, and beep/flash/GPS to allow you to easily locate your vehicle in a crowded parking lot. You can also check your route and mileage stats as well as check on fuel levels. Could you believe that you can even
Driving in real life conditions prove that this car is both capable and complicated. It’s performance is impressive and handling is tight and predictable. On the other hand, the E-Pace bounces busily over bumpy roads, with suspension setting that is “over anxious.” The result is a car that is smooth and capable over refined surfaces but loses refinement over less-than-ideal roads. In fact, some passengers got motion sickness in this vehicle because the car felt bumpier than other SUVs. In comparison to the Audi Q3 (the current model), the E-Pace has substantially more features and technology — although that will change soon as Audi has already shown the next generation Q3. I think the BMW X1 is the benchmark in this segment, boasting refined and smooth operation with first-class steering feel that is hard to match. But the Jaguar has more character and interesting features that are unique; besides the E-Pace may be the best looking among them all.
Summary For trim options in Canada, drivers have a bevy of options. If you choose the P250 engine, you have the option of the E-Pace S P250 or the SE P250. If you bump up to the engine with a little more gusto, you can then choose between the R-Dynamic S, the R-Dynamic SE, or the top-level R-Dynamic HSE. The huge selection of configurations and choices is somewhat overwhelming and it is obvious that Jaguar is striving to give drivers full control both behind the wheel and with driver options. smooth drive. With competitors such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC, the BMW X1, as well as the Audi Q3, there are some seriously luxurious and yet practical shoes to fill. Last month, BC Hydro launched Phase-two of its electric vehicle charging network in BC, which included the opening of 28 new fast electric vehicle charging stations. Among them are strategically placed stations that will allow drivers to navigate a clean energy vehicle from Tofino to the BCAlberta border.
program involves plans to connect Kamloops to Prince George, and while a few years away, Phase-four will establish a link to the North Coast in Prince Rupert. From Haida Gwaii to Kamloops, five regional districts are now working together as part of a planning committee to design the northern BC charging station network.
In specific terms, the overall expansion involves 12 new stations on the Lower Mainland, seven on Vancouver Island, and seven in the Interior/East Kootenays. These fast charging stations have been developed to charge an electric vehicle’s battery to 80 per cent in 30-minutes or less, which is a substantial increase, given that slower Level-2 chargers can take two hours or longer.
At this time, extensive northern travel in an electric vehicle is virtually impossible. However, once the stations are in place, it is anticipated that greater electrical vehicle usage will occur, and car dealerships in the north will be able to provide more service to electric vehicle owners and demand will subsequently increase.
For drivers of electric vehicles, this is a significant development as strategically placed charging stations will help drivers feel more comfortable in their ability to do a road trip without running out of charge and experiencing what is referred to as range anxiety. Obviously, there is a need to expand the network of charging stations even further in order to develop more fulsome access, with a greater emphasis on the Interior and the North. To that end, Phase-three of the BC Hydro

Chevrolet Bolt EV Wave a fond farewell to every gas station for over 350 kilometres
A few years ago, while trimming my front yard hedges, I accidentally ‘trimmed’ a finger on my left hand. Yes, it was not pretty, but the surgeon was skilled and stitched it up good as new. Where the problem came in was using BY AKASH SABLOK my left hand for daily tasks, such as brushing my teeth, eating a meal, and even riding my bike. The mind adapts though, and I was able to handle most tasks with my right hand, even driving with the one hand.
What you get a result of all that electrons transferring into the Lithium-Ion battery in your car is an impressive 200hp and 266 lb-ft of torque providing you with a 0-100km/h sprint in about 6.5 seconds. Not pole-position territory, but perfect for in-town jaunts. The Bolt EV rides on 215/50R17 all-season tires. They skinniness, along with the sleek shape of the car, help with fuel (battery) efficiency.
You see, the Bolt features regenerative braking, which uses the vehicle’s momentum to drive a generator during deceleration, which in turn slows down the car, which means you don’t need brakes to slow you down. Essentially you can hit the accelerator pedal to go, and then release the same pedal to slow down and stop. The mind has to adapt to this as we are programmed to put our foot on the brake to slow down or stop. Don’t worry; the brake pedal is still there in case you need, you’ll just be using it less. And of course, saving money on brake replacement. The Chevy Bolt EV is General Motors second full EV (electric vehicle) in their line-up, the Volt being the first. The Bolt can take you from one point to another point 383km away, without using a drop of gas. I see some happy dinosaur fans. A daily commute of 50-6okm is relatively common, meaning that most Bolt owners could go about a week between charges. But, like our cell phones, people will charge them up every night. A full charge, on a 240v charger, can take just over nine hours. Expect longer times on a standard 120v outlet. If you have access to a DC Fast Charger (available at some locations throughout BC, courtesy BC Hyrdo), you can get a 140 km charge in 30 minutes. Enough time to enjoy that tall skinny wet latte.

Civic Type R
REDEFINES SPORTINESS Honda took 20 years to bring the Type R to North America, while Asian and European consumers BY DAVID CHAO got to indulge and enjoy this amazing vehicle for many years prior to 2017. The Honda Civic Type R utilizes the 10th-generation global platform for Honda and this may be one of the most significant debuts for Japan’s automotive engineering pioneer. While the Type R might not seem like your typical daily commuter car – no doubt due to the extreme design the Type R is very useable for day to day driving. It of course packs a mean punch when needed. With in-yourface styling, an outrageous front-wheel-driven turbo engine, and a price tag that won’t break the bank, the Honda Civic Type R could well become a future collectible. The 2018 Honda Civic Type R has a garish appearance that is not for everyone. It resembles the type of car you might see in the newest Fast and Furious film, including a very large and obvious rear spoiler. While the body is fundamentally that of a four-door standard Civic hatchback, it comes equipped with many bold accents and trims. The Type R’s many winged and indented accents are actually functional and aerodynamically designed for reducing lift and increasing cooling or venting. A front, side and rear skirt package comes with a carbon fibre finish and red styling lines to round out the exterior look. The interior design is also identical to a standard civic hatchback, but comes equipped with red suede-like

fabric bucket seats with the Type R logo, a leather-wrapped black and red steering wheel, textured aluminum pedals, an aluminum shift knob and a unique Type R serial number plate. These features truly do set this vehicle apart from the standard hatchback and this is before we even approach everything found underneath the hood. The styling is too much Fast and Furious but this is a Type R after all, and you will quickly forget about the styling once you are behind the wheel because the car is just so so good.
Honda’s dual-axis front suspension, the Type R has shockingly great steering feel and surprisingly smooth ride. A triple centre exhaust with chrome finisher controls the exhaust tone and functions to release the extra power from the 2.0-litre turbo engine. The manual transmission on this car, once again, is worldclass. It just begs you to shift up or down constantly – in fact you end up unnecessarily shifting out of gears just to feel the exhilaration of the gear changes. Some advanced safety features such as a collision mitigation have been omitted in favour of focusing on performance. Even still, the Honda Civic Type R was given five stars in NHTSA testing and also was awarded Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.
Even though there is only one Touring trim option, standard features are bountiful and you will definitely get noticed wherever you go. The Type R holds the record lap time for a front-wheel drive car on the Nurburgring track, and it is indicative of the power under the hood. Packed inside is a direct-injected 2.0-litre VTEC turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that cranks out 306-horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This manual transmission vehicle has a fuel economy of 10.6L/100 km in the city, 8.3L/100 km on the highway, and 9.6L/100 km combined. Not bad for a sports sedan. With impeccable cornering grip and braking power, accelerating to high speeds is a breeze. As well, due to

When I was just a wee lad, a long time ago, my neighbor pulled up to his home in a BMW M5. The first generation of 5-Series (E28) that received the M treatment had an engine derived from the legendary BMW M1, albeit with 252hp. I had a hard time looking away at the machine that was so close, yet so far. Lots of knocks on his door and friendly smiles only garnered me a ride in the passenger seat. The year is now 2018, and I have driven the lion’s share of M5’s. While the next version of the M 5-series is coming out soon, we have the M550i available to us right now — this is not a compromise, in fact, it’s a blessing.

IN THE LATE 60s
if you wanted to RACE ON THE TRACK you first had to build the cars for the street... Although fans might think of the Mustang as a performance car, it was at first really an exercise in image. The performance came later. One example, the very-limited-production Boss 302 was created first and foremost as a way to go racing. With its thundering V8 hoofbeats, the Boss made a sound that was music to the ears of Ford fans everywhere, but alarmed and intimidated the competition. The best part about the Boss 302, however, was that anyone willing to shell out an extra $1,200-$1,500 over and above a base Mustang (an extravagant sum back in 1969), could own a car approximating a full-on race machine, but with “civilian” interior and trim. The Boss 302 was developed because Chevrolet, a late comer to the “Pony” car wars - which began with the Mustang, of course - with its 1967 Camaro, had come up with a secret weapon for winning races in the Trans-Am road course series. That year, the Camaro Z/28 (named for its order-form option-code designation), with its special 302-cubic-inch engine, made obsolete all other competition machinery. In the hands of team owner Roger Penske and driver extraordinaire Mark Donohue, the ultra quick and slick Z/28s were clobbering the Mustangs at what had been their own game. In 1968, Penske, Donohue and their dark blue Sonoco-sponsored Camaro captured 10 of 13 races, including an amazing string of eight consecutive victories. Suddenly, the less-powerful 289 cubic-inch Mustangs were outclassed and outgunned. The brass at Ford needed to turn their losing situation around, and fast. At the time the company was pouring millions of dollars into a variety of racing programs throughout the world, including NASCAR, long- distance sports cars, dragsters, rally cars and numerous forms of open-wheel classes. Weakness in any of these categories would simply not be tolerated. With the encouragement of company president (and racing fan) Bunkie Knudsen, Ford’s performance head Jacque Passino was charged with putting the Mustang back in the winner’s circle. Also involved was former General Motors stylist Larry Shinoda, who had been appointed director of Ford’s Special Design Office. Since the Trans Am rules demanded that each manufacturer sell a minimum 1,000 vehicles to the general public (no prototypes or one-offs allowed) before
a given vehicle could be used for competition, Shinoda ensured that the new Boss 302 would at least look good in the showrooms as well as whip the Camaro on the track. The car began with what Ford called the SportsRoof (fastback) body style. Shinoda added special touches, including the car’s front and rear spoiler, rear window slats and special racing stripes. He is also credited with giving the car its name (“Boss” for his direct superior, Knudsen). If horsepower and displacement were the primary issues, then Ford’s engineers had the solution. Just as Chevrolet had mixed and matched mechanical components to create its 302 engine to fall within Trans Am’s 305-cubic-inch limit, Ford took the heads from its 351-cubic-inch “Cleveland” powerplant and fitted them to the new 302 cubic-inch block. The resulting hybrid produced a claimed 290 horsepower, however, as with the Z/28, actual output was understated to keep the automobile insurance companies happy and premiums low. Prepped for competition, however, the Boss powerplant easily generated more than 400 horses. Aside from the trick motor, the Boss was also equipped with a four-speed “Toploader” manual transmission, competition suspension setup, quicker steering ratio and a 6,150-rpm electronic rev limiter. Right off the showroom floor, a $3,700 base-price Boss could sprint to 60 mph (96 km-h) from rest in less than seven seconds and produce quarter-mile times of around 14.5 seconds. To ready the Boss 302s for battle, Passino employed Bud Moore, a NASCAR stock-car race-team veteran, as well as former racer and Cobra sports-car builder Carroll Shelby who had successfully campaigned Trans-Am-prepared Mustangs (called Shelby GT350s) in the mid-1960s. Each man, along with a group of experienced and high-priced driving talent, fielded two cars for the 1969 season. On the road courses, full-race versions of the Boss 302 certainly began to take charge, but these more competitive Mustangs were still no match for the dynamic Penske/Donohue duo and its well-prepared Z/28. By season’s end, the Chevy had won six races, twice as many as both Ford teams. In the manufacturer standings,
Chevrolet finished with 78 points, 14 ahead of Ford. For 1970, Bud Moore became the sole operator of Ford’s two-car Trans-Am effort. To make the Boss even more competitive, a more rigid rear spoiler was added as well as a rear stabilizer bar. The outcome of that year’s championship was a squeaker with Jones beating Donohue (who was then driving an AMC Javelin) by one point. It was a more lopsided story for the constructors trophy, with the combination of Boss 302 Mustangs and Cougars equipped with similar engines beating GM, AMC and Chrysler for the title. Following the 1970 season, both Ford and GM abandoned their corporate Trans-Am sponsorships and the series evolved into a battle of the imports, with Porsche becoming the dominant player for the next few years. Today, a variety of foreign and domestic manufacturers are involved in Trans-Am racing, but the rules have changed to allow pure racing machines with composite bodies that bear only minimal resemblance to vehicles that anyone would drive on the street. But for one shining period in time, the Boss 302 Mustang beat all comers and Ford was able to reclaim the Mustang’s top spot in the Pony car corral.
