The fact that Haney Builders Supplies has been in Maple Ridge for almost 80 years is not only a testament to its commitment to the community, but also to its customers. The family owned business opened its doors in 1939 and is the oldest lumberyard and building supply store in Maple Ridge and also the area’s largest. It covers a full city block in the heart of downtown. Haney Builders Supplies deals with materials for everything from the smallest renovations to multi-family projects. There are separate divisions specializing in lumber, finishing, landscaping and paint. “We primarily deal with every aspect of wood construction,” said Haney Builders Supplies general manager Alex Yakovyshenko. “We take pride in providing solutions and being with our customers from start to finish. That relationship is what brings us back to work every day,” he continued. What most people don’t realize, though, is that there is a large retail front to the store as well. Here sales staff get to spend a half an hour to an hour with a customer, walking them through their home reno issue and putting together a kit that is unique to their situation. “We use our knowledge and expertise and put pieces together, plumbing, electrical or whatever it may be,” said Yakovyshenko. “We like the fact that the customer will leave and they will probably spend less than $20. They will leave with the knowledge how to fix (the problem) as opposed to being stuck with a problem they are unsure how to tackle,” he added. Yakovyshenko says customers can expect to be treated well, pay a fair price and be looked after the moment they set foot in Haney Builders Supplies. “We take pride in being part of the community even though our community is not small anymore. We still very much participate in various activities and aspects of it,” he said. A lot of the initiatives, Yakovyshenko said, comes through his staff members. “If people want to support a particular initiative and they want to be part of it, we help out,” he said. Haney Builders Supplies helps the Friends In Need Food Bank by collecting non-perishable food items at various events they host. They hold an annual golf tournament to raise money for different charities. Over the last 30 years it has raised more than $150,000. Last year they raised more than $15,000 for the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. The business also supports carpentry programs at local schools. Plus they sponsor Pink Shirt Day, Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, The War Amps Child Amputee Program, Sunshine Foundation of Canada and the B.C. Lower Mainland RCMP Golf Tournament. They are also a main sponsor of Operation Red Nose in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. A unique feature of Haney Builders Supplies is that they host a ladies night every November. Yakovyshenko says that traditionally the industry has been male dominated but now in a lot of households the woman is the bread winner if not the only person in the household and there are more women working for him than there has been in the past. Between 100 and 150 women turned out for Ladies Night this past November that featured stations with vendors and demonstrations teaching participants how to solve problems around the house that they might not feel comfortable doing. ”A lot of our staff members have been working in trades or around trades so when we’re standing on the other side of the counter from our customer, a lot of things we talk about we’ve actually done,” he explained. And that’s what Yakovyshenko believes sets them apart from other home renovation stores. They are able to craft customized solutions for a unique situations talking from experience. But one thing Yakovyshenko wants people to know is that his skilled team is enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge to help customers with the smallest of projects to the big builders.

Local people are employed and they in turn support other businesses. That’s what community is all about.” “Just this year we’ve reopened and relocated our Maple Ridge Office to be more central as well as keeping our Pitt Meadows office. We can now service both cities with our two locations. We started our first office in Maple Ridge 37 years ago. Local business owners are community builders • 33 per cent report they are holding steady, but looking for growth opportunities. Job creation There is also a strong appetite for small business job creation in the year ahead: • Nearly one-third (31 per cent) of small business owners indicated that they will be hiring within the next year; • The majority (52 per cent) of small businesses in the "growth stage" plan to hire over the next 12 months; Yet while small business job creation is moving in the right direction, the Intuit survey identified some clear opportunities to accelerate job creation. Obstacles to hiring The survey reveals that small business owners fear that there is a skills shortage in the workforce. Forty-five per cent of those planning to hire in the next 12 months indicate they will struggle to find people with the right skills. In some instances, small business owners could better leverage the full range of tools at their disposal. For example, small business owners are more than twice as likely to make a hiring decision based on word-

of-mouth (68 per cent) than they are by using online tools, such as LinkedIn (31 per cent). In addition, small business owners are often unaware of the costs associated with on-boarding a new employee. Only 27 per cent of small business owners had a good sense of the cost, suggesting that it would be $4,000 or more to bring on a new employee. Managing the complexities of a growing staff and a payroll are the next hurdle. A third of small business owners don't have a good grasp on the costs associated with managing payroll expenses, such as EI premiums. Furthermore, three in five (61 per cent) are unaware of the tempo-
rary Hiring Credit for Small Business - a federal government credit that offers up to $1,000 to help a small business cover its EI premiums. While small business job creation is clearly moving in the right direction, there is a clear need to create even more net new jobs if we are to truly recover from the losses of the great recession. By providing education and resources for small businesses to better manage the process of hiring an employee end-toend - from recruitment, to on-boarding, to managing the complexities of payroll - we can provide a much needed boost to the small business job market.

They are risk takers, they are inventors, they are community builders - but perhaps the most important title a small business owner holds is "job creator." Forty-six percent of Canada's private sector workforce is made up of small business employees. That's 5.1 million Canadians who count on a small businesses for their livelihood. The small businesses job market felt the impact of the global economic downturn acutely. The good news is that Canada's entrepreneurs have turned the corner. Small businesses created almost 140,000 new jobs in recent years. An engine for growth A new Intuit Canada survey shows promising signs that this positive momentum will continue, with a majority (65 per cent) of small businesses indicating they are either actively growing or looking for growth opportunities: • 32 per cent indicate they are in a "growth stage," with 10 per cent of these saying they are "growing considerably.";

City of Pitt Meadows offers a rural lifestyle with big city opportunities that the customer doesn’t have sitting at their computer. “Recently, I attended a conference and listened to one of the senior marketing directors from Amazon. He explained that there are new technologies that now allow the smaller local business people to join becoming part of the online market. “This new technology will allow a shopper who is looking for a specific item, to go online at a time convenient to them, and search a local business who is registered online. Through the online shopping network, I will be able to restrict my online shopping to the local area businesses. Now I know if the item is available locally and I can have it ready for pick-up at the store or have it delivered if possible. “So for those of us who are passionate about shopping locally, we will no longer have to choose between online shopping and visiting the local market place. It is exciting to see changes coming where we can use the convenience of shopping at home and still support the local business owner. It was encouraging to hear that Amazon and others are prepared to continue to support and promote small business owners.”

Mayor Becker agrees. “I am fortunate to be able to live and work in my home community and I appreciate those businesses who recognize that many people have to commute so they will adjust their opening or closing hours to capture those prospective customers.” Corporately, the City of Pitt Meadows tries, wherever possible, to procure items locally. “We always make sure local firms are aware of our bidding process.” Mayor Becker points out, “We have to have a competitive bid process, by law, but if we can show that where bids are close to the same, we can score a local supplier higher for availability of product or perhaps a service package. But we have to ensure that our taxpayers are getting the best deal for their tax dollars.” Pitt Meadows has a “Busy ready” philosophy. “We try to streamline our processes to get people started up as soon as possible. We want new businesses to locate here and we want existing businesses to expand here. We keep our

turn - around time for permits and licences and our permit costs competitive and our staff are very accommodating to the business community. Mayor Becker sums it up, “The City of Pitt Meadows is a great place for people to raise a family, start a business, shop and relax.”

Through surveys, forums and regular open and frank discussions with the business community, the City staff get great feedback that enables them to set a course, finds out what has been working and what needs to change. Mayor John Becker supports shopping locally. “The rationale for buying local is that we are supporting local businesses who pay property taxes in the community and who contribute to the fabric of the community by donations and volunteerism. “From a business point of view I shop local whenever possible because many of the local business people are customers of mine and I like to show them that I appreciate their business by giving back to them.” Mayor Becker recognizes the challenges of local brick and mortar businesses competing with the convenience of online shopping. “We recognize that leaving the house, getting in the car, fighting traffic and looking for parking are challenges

Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association - “Ours to Share” By Jim McGregor The Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association was created late 2006 by a group of downtown Maple Ridge business and property owners and officially launched spring 2007. Guided by a dedicated volunteer board, board and staff work with members, constantly developing new programs and projects, designed to improve the business environment in the downtown Maple Ridge BIA area. The main focus of the DMRBIA is to address and meet the needs of their members, approx. 700 businesses plus 300 commercial property owners in the downtown Maple Ridge core, between 222nd and 223rd streets. Executive director Ineke Boekhorst explains the relationship between the DMRBIA and the downtown businesses and the City of Maple Ridge works really well. ”We listen to our members when we receive suggestions, comments and lots of positive feedback. Our members are the DMRBIA and we built a solid trust and understanding that we will advocate on their behalf. The DMRBIA is funded
by a levy on members’ property taxes, collected by the City of Maple Ridge. DMRBIA staff under guidance of the Board of directors organize and deliver a large number of projects, programs and promotions, such as: events, revitalization campaigns, security projects, beautification, promotions, etc., which market and bring visitors to downtown Maple Ridge businesses and the area in general” The businesses are extremely happy with this collaborating relationship. “Every five years we go through an extensive renewal process” explains Boekhorst. ”Since inception we have renewed twice, resulting in approx. 99 per cent approval by our members and we respect and are quite proud of our members’ trust in the continuation of the Association.” The non-profit association offers a large variety of programs and initiatives which members can choose to take advantage of and/or participate in. The Core Area Patrol (CAP) is providing a sense of community, taking care of our day-to-day business. Making sure visitors and customers are always welcome in
downtown Maple Ridge, is what the Core Area Patrol is all about. Our CAP member covers the entire Business Improvement Area daily, always ready to deal with front line issues related to auto and property crime, personal safety, cleanliness, hospitality and social environment. CAP is ready to assist where and when needed, making the BIA area a great place to work, shop, live, play and visit. The Facade Improvement Program, a collaboration between the DMRBIA and the City of Maple Ridge, provides grants to property and business owners in Downtown Maple Ridge. The purpose of this program is to continue the revitalization of the downtown core by improving the physical appearance of the buildings and therefore making downtown a more inviting and interesting place to shop, walk, live and play. Shop Local campaigns are important. In addition to seasonal campaigns, special “Shop Local” features are published in The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News. Seann Fuller has been in the landscape industry for over 20 years. “I enrolled in the Douglas College SelfEmployment Program and there I received training from industry experts on how to successfully launch and manage my own business. Seann went on to build a very successful landscape company and has worked alongside some very talented landscape architects throughout the lower mainland. His eye for design and his attention to detail make him stand out in the landscape industry. Fuller Landscaping has been in business since 2001. “From 2004-2009 our main projects were city parks for several municipalities throughout the lower mainland, installing playgrounds, plazas and sport fields, working closely with landscape architects. Mike Ferg was raised in Maple Ridge and has deep roots in this community. “I have lived in Maple Ridge for forty years. Pitt Meadows Plumbing was started in 1979 by the Robinson family who have been a part of the Maple Ridge community for generations. The business began after a few brothers had moved to Pitt Meadows and started working from a small office on the family farm. The past 39 years have seen many changes. Small retailers have been trying to harness the "shop local" movement to hang onto their customers. Besides being more expensive, you're not differentiated enough. You're selling the same old stuff. You can bust out of that rut and stock products that are less easily price-compared by investigating local suppliers instead. One way local businesses can get some real buzz going is to buy local themselves, and to feature how they buy local in their
marketing. Several restaurants I patronize do a great job of this, with menus describing the locally raised beef and produce they're using in their dishes, down to what farm it's from. That's a powerful way to attract shop-local oriented consumers and give them a more compelling reason to visit you. It also lets small businesses support each other directly, and can help build new relationships for marketing.

Mark’s Commercial is one way that happens, but it’s the little things that make a difference. For instance, he says the store always keeps a portion of its retail space available to stock brands and products that customers request. That’s the reason Blakladder, Ripzone and Powder Room brands are in the Maple Ridge store and not others – because local customers demanded them, and Mark’s responded. Another example of giving customers what they want is by stocking every available size for every product line they carry. “We’re the only store in Canada that does that,” Jeremy states proudly. “If we carry a product line, we’ll order every size it comes in to give as many of our customers as possible the opportunity to purchase that product. It’s why we carry boot sizes up to 18 when most stores generally carry up to size 13. It’s also why we carry 38-inch inseams when most stores only carry 32.”
