TRENDS FOR FALL

STREET LEVEL IN ABBOTSFORD

Annual Christmas show offers gift ideas & entertainment From November 17 to 19, Abbotsford’s Tradex is once again home to the West Coast Christmas Show. The 11th annual show and marketplace offers something for every member of the family. Visitors have the opportunity to discover gift ideas, compete in the Ugly Christmas Sweater contest, visit the Christmas dollhouse miniature show and view the Free-Mo HO scale model train display. “We try and create a family atmosphere,” said show organizer George Acs. “This show is more than a place where you can do some madcap shopping—it’s enter-

taining if you take the time.” Santa’s Workshop is back for another year and features complimentary activities like cookie decorating, sand art and writing letters to Santa. New for the 2018 show are workshops on creating origami ornaments and building holiday-themed mini terrariums. Throughout the weekend 18 groups will perform on the Sounds of the Holiday stage. A few of the featured performers are Central Fraser Valley Fiddlers, Chilliwack Harmony Chorus and Trinity Western University Concert Choir.

Local chefs working with local ingredients will demonstrate creative culinary ideas on the Home for the Holidays stage. Local experts will offer show visitors home decorating tips as well as floral arranging and centrepiece tutorials. Several Christmas-oriented vendors will also perform product demonstrations. The West Coast Christmas Show features several seasonal vendors selling Christmas decorations, ornaments, decorative lanterns and glasswork. More than half of the 240 vendors are British ColumContinued on A30

Maple Pork Tenderloin Fillet with Caramelized Apples

RECIPE PAIRING:

A pork tenderloin naturally has a long, tapered end, which often means the ends are overcooked while the middle is perfect. However, filleting the tenderloin means it cooks quickly and evenly, and makes this delicious mid-week or company’s coming dish one of the easiest dinners you’ll ever bring to the table. The tender maple-andmustard flavoured apples are the perfect accompaniment for this warming winter meal.

INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp. vegetable or olive oil 1 tbsp. butter 2 Lepp Farms raised Pork Tenderloins (choose ones on the smaller side) Freshly ground pepper 1 tbsp. fresh thyme leaves 1 large or 2 small apples, cored and sliced 1 tbsp. grainy mustard and 2 tbsp. maple syrup OR 3 Tbsp. Smak Dab Canadian Maple Mustard, in place of mustard and maple syrup 1/2 cup whipping cream

METHOD Cut the pork tenderloin into two equal pieces crosswise, and then butterfly each half lengthwise, but stop short of butterflying the long tapered end. Flatten with your hands to as even a thickness as possible. Now it resembles a chicken breast in size, shape and thickness, making it faster and easier to cook. In a heavy skillet, heat the oil and butter over medium-high heat. Sprinkle the pork tenderloin fillet generously with pepper and thyme and cook for 3-5 minutes on each side, until

golden and just cooked through (the middle should reach 145F). Transfer to a plate and set aside. Sauté the apples in the pan for a few minutes, until starting to soften and turn golden. Add the mustard, maple syrup and cream and cook, stirring, until the mixture is well blended, comes to a simmer and thickens. Pour the apples and sauce over the pork and serve immediately. That’s it! You’ve just created a delicious, creamy dish just begging for some mashed potatoes or a crusty baguette to mop up all that incredible sauce.

The Farmer and the Foodie Despite the best planning, sometimes things can go wrong in a second. Last weekend’s long-awaited Appleooza event started out with great promise, the warm October sun enhancing the rainbow-coloured bins of orchard apples and pumpkins. Soon the first cartons of freshly pressed apple juice were rolling off the assembly line when without warning, the machine went ominously quiet. Having spent his whole life working with machinery, Farmer Rob knew we had a big problem, and soon enough the dreaded news was relayed that the motor was broken, and we’d have to wait for new parts to arrive from Vernon. That’s when our incredible team jumped into action, and with smiles on their faces and spurred on by our “win as a team” core value, everyone did their very best to ensure our guests enjoyed themselves, despite having

to deliver the disappointing news that we didn’t have any freshly pressed apple juice available. All was not lost as the newlyintroduced apple fritters were a huge hit, and by late afternoon on cartons of juice were again being pressed. d. Fresh Our shelves are now fully press ly stocked with apple ed this once-aavailacider year treat, and ble! this month’s easy yet elegant recipe highlights our delicious Okanagan apples. We are so grateful for your patience and encouraging words, not only do we have the best team in town, but we also have the most amazing guests!

HEALTH

The relationship between health and volunteering Volunteering is often its own reward. Helping others can be just as beneficial to the people doing the helping as it is for the people being helped. Though it can sometimes be hard to find time to volunteer, a close look at some of the various health benefits of volunteering may compel adults and children alike

Volunteering and happiness Veteran volunteers may have long suspected they’re happier when they volunteer, and research suggests that’s true. A study from researchers at the London School of Economics that was published in the journal Social Science and Medicine found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. The researchers compared people who never volunteered to people who did, finding that the odds of being “very happy” rose by 7 percent among people who volunteered monthly. Those odds increased by 12 percent among people who volunteered every two to four weeks.

Volunteering and mental health Psychologists have long known that social interac-

tion can improve mental health. Psychology Today notes that interacting with others decreases feelings of depression while increasing feelings of well-being. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, exposing volunteers teers to people with shared interests. sts. That can be especially valuable ble to people who are new to a community, helping them to avoid feelings of loneliness after moving to an area where they have no preexisting social network.

Volunteering and long-term health Volunteering that requires social interaction can produce ce long-term health benefits that at can have a profound impact on quality of life as men and women age. A recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease focused on participants without dementia who were involved in

Improve entertaining spaces Some homes are seemingly built for entertaining, while others may need a little help to make them more fit for hosting dinner, holiday gatherings or an evening with friends. People who open their homes to loved ones may want to make some modifications to their spaces to improve the experience for all involved.

your space to those preferences. For example, a large dining table with fold-out extensions or leaves is ideal for someone who regularly hosts formal dinner parties. Renovate a room to include a small bar and club chairs for a lounge feel if cocktail parties partie are typical. • Improve lighting. Work with an electrician and/ ligh designer who can offer ideas for lighting that or designe can set the mood for entertaining. Rooms that are dull du and dim can benefit from overhead lighting fixtures if there are none already ligh available. Task lighting in the kitchen under av cabinets can make it easy to prepare ca food for guests. Wall sconces or focused f lighting on artwork can establish a l dramatic effect. d

• Tame the clutter. Look for ways to reduce clutter in rooms where entertaining takes place. Built-ins with bookshelves and cabinets can hide electronics and wayward toys or collectibles. Focus attention on the entryway, hanging hooks for collecting coats, keys and shoes, so they do not overrun the foyer. Remove any knickknacks or other breakable items from shelves or on coffee tables to free up more space.

• Do major construction. Consider working with a builder to make some w changes if you simply don’t have the ch space spac to entertain. Taking down a wall can open kitchens to living spaces, while adding a deck or o three-season room off the kitchen or room can provide more space for guests to dining roo congregate.

• Improve conversation seating. Arrange tables and chairs to create conversation nooks oks for guests who want to talk and get to know w one another better. Consider moving out big and d bulky sofas in favour of love seats or comfortable chairs that will take up less room and improve flow in entertaining areas. • Find the pieces you like.
