4 Seniors Resource Directory 2018
This sixth edition of the Seniors Resource Directory has been published by the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News in partnership with the Seniors Network. The Seniors Network is a community planning table led by seniors, for seniors. We work in collaboration with the community to improve the health and wellbeing of seniors in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Katzie First Nation. The primary goal is to strengthen the availability and quality of programs and resources for seniors, and to develop a seamless approach to senior service delivery in a spirit of cooperation and understanding. Over the years, our projects have included: • Age-friendly Community Initiative • Seniors Resource Guide
The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News is honored to bring the sixth edition of the Seniors Resource Directory to our residents in partnership with the Seniors Network. The term senior doesn’t mean to everyone what it once did. It’s been redefined in many ways over the decades. To keep it simple, we’ll define it here as 55 and older. For many, the title is an honour – one denoting experience, knowledge and respect. Look around, and you’ll see seniors who, each according to individual skills and abilities, built families, neighbourhoods and businesses. They challenged themselves with their pursuits daily. They helped build communities. Seniors range from those who worked a lifetime to achieve goals, and those still trying to do so. And just as they offer something to our

The Seniors Network meets once every two months and everyone is welcome. Thank you to The News for their generous support of the Seniors Resource Directory. communities, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have a great deal for them, as well. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News offers this resource directory as a guide to seniors seeking information about such services. Some will appreciate the guide for health, legal or support services, while others will enjoy seeking out recreational or leisure activities. If you know of a business or organization that should be included in our next publication, please let us know. We want to provide as much information to our seniors as possible. Our thanks to all who made the directory possible, especially Heather Treleaven, Sheila Priestley and Sheila Pratt for their support and hard work, and most importantly our seniors! Benefits of volunteering with seniors What Rick Underhill loves most about helping seniors in the community are the new friendships he makes.
“I’ve made a lot of friends in the community through this and I’ve had people open their arms out to me like family when I come visit,” said Underhill.
Underhill has been delivering home-cooked meals with Meals on Wheels for the past 15 years.
“For Christmas time, they’ll have you over for a drink or whatever. That’s what I enjoy about it,” he continued.
Meals on Wheels is run through Community Services and is a service that provides hot nutritious meals for seniors who want to live independently in their own homes. Not only does the program provide food for those who are unable to prepare their own meals anymore, but it provides regular human contact to many who are at risk of isolation. “I wanted to give something back to my community and Meals on Wheels seemed like a good fit at the time,” said Underhill. He enjoys the conversations and says he has made some lifetime friendships with people who are in their 90s now and continue to call him up to come and visit.
Joanne Leginus, with Community Services, hears this all the time from volunteers. “I know from what volunteers have shared with us, that they get more out of volunteering than the seniors. They feel that they are making a difference, that they are able to help and give back to others,” said Leginus, adding that the friendships develop from delivering to the same person week after week. Leginus says volunteering with seniors through a service like Meals on Wheels helps out a vulnerable population, those who live on their own and need the supports to stay in their homes. “And many of them have also been in the position where they have come to the seniors home and either they haven’t answered the door or somebody has answered the door and [the volunteer has] noticed they are in some kind of health distress,” explained Leginus. Marilynn and Len MacDonald volunteer as drivers with the Better At Home program through Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Community Services, helping clients get to their appointments or to simply help them get to where they need to go. “A friend of ours was doing it for Community Services in Agassiz,” Marilynn said about how they became involved.

Benefits of volunteering with seniors Continued from page 6 “He was telling us about it and how much he enjoyed it and his stories of people and what they have told him and what they’ve done throughout their lives. And it sort of interested us because we are retired and had nothing to do,” she said. So they went through the application process and were accepted. The service is offered generally from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Emails are sent out to the volunteers with a list of clients and where they have to get to and volunteers choose the rides that best suit their schedules. Marilynn and Len drive clients from Abbotsford all the way to the University of British Columbia. They enjoy the warm feeling they get from making people happy. Marilynn drove one lady to Vancouver for an early morning appointment for cataract surgery and was so overcome by how thankful the passenger was that someone would get up for the 5 a.m. trek. Another lady they drove to a cemetery for what would have been her 69th wedding anniversary was so grateful she gave them each a chocolate bar. “Helping out people who need help, and maybe one day we’ll need help, and hopefully someone will be there to drive us,” said Marilynn. “Each ride is different, each individual person is different and their stories are heartwarming. It’s just a joy to drive them,” Marilynn continued. Most of the time, Marilynn and Len do the drives together. “It gives us a little date day while we are waiting for the client. We’ll go for a coffee or something,” Marilynn laughed, adding that it helps them get out of the house, too.
Lois Wittenberg volunteers at the front desk at the Maple Ridge Seniors Activity Centre. Wittenberg enjoys volunteering at the society because it’s a place where seniors’ have the opportunity to meet new people. “It’s a social connection, that’s the most important thing. It’s a place for them to meet people in their own age groups and to stay active in their communities,” she said. Wittenberg has been volunteering at the society for eight years, something she wanted to do after she retired. When she first started volunteering, she was surprised at the activity level of the visitors. “I’ve learned most of the seniors are fairly active and with it and they’re just looking for a social activity.” Underhill can’t say enough about how happy volunteering has made him. “I’ve gone [to Meals on Wheels] in the morning feeling down and gloomy and whatever,” said Underhill. “Then all of a sudden, I’ll sit down here and talk and my spirits are lifted,” he said. And Underhill says, seniors deserve our respect. “You look on a wall and you would see they are a WW2 vet or something like that and they are telling that they appreciate what you are doing for them,” said Underhill “And what I am doing for them is nothing compared to what they did for us.” Continued on page 15
Marilynn and Len have also made a lasting friendship with a couple that they used to drive to the grocery store. The couple has since moved to Nanaimo, but Marilynn and Len continue to correspond with them. “I wish more people who are retired and have free time could do it,” said Marilynn. “You have to do it to feel the enjoyment of it,” she said. Health tips for independent seniors Taking prescriptions and preventing falls are two things seniors can do to optimize health. When an apple a day no longer keeps the doctor away, various medications may be necessary for a seniors’ health. Miyoung Baek, Haney Pharmacy manager, said seniors often struggle with taking prescribed medications. “For seniors who live at home, it is really hard. At the pharmacy level, we try to promote them to adhere to medication. Many people may have depression, so they will say, ‘Why do I have to take it.’ Even if we try to promote them to be adherent, they will not follow the regimen.”
Seniors are advised to build relationships with their pharmacist and doctor “Don’t ignore breathing issues, swelling or other small symptoms. I recommend patients write down something as soon as it’s new so they can bring it to their doctor.”
Baek advises seniors to build a relationship with their pharmacists and doctors in order to stay on top of their health care.
Another concern for seniors’ living at home is the risk for falls.
“We try to talk to them on the phone and when they visit the pharmacy to make a relationship so they can understand why it’s very important and to promote them to visit their doctor regularly,” added Baek.
Ashley Kwon, Fraser Health coordinator of patient safety and injury prevention, advises three changes that can be done at home. “Make sure you have enough lighting by installing lights in dark areas, having sensor lights, and plugging in night lights. Make sure you can reach a lamp or flashlight when you’re in bed.”
If memory or mental health is a concern, Baek provides various solutions to ensure medication is taken. “Each pharmacy has their own compliance packaging to help them take the medication at the proper times. If the patient has a memory problem like dementia or if they have mental health issues, then the pharmacy can provide daily dispensing which is a pharmacy visit to the patient’s place every day.”
Another tip is to ensure decor is secured. “Remove any loose mats or rugs. Ensure they are secure and have a slip-resistant back. Keep clear of clutter and cords.” And in the bathroom, Kwon suggests installing handrails around the toilet and bathtub, wearing nonslip slippers and placing necessary bath items within reaching distance from the tub.
Baek also advises seniors to take note of any medical concern that come up – whether it’s big or small.

Get moving at Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society RMSS offers a variety of recreation classes for all fitness levels.
“These are the most wonderful seniors. I love this class. We laugh, have fun, they are so welcoming and take on new ideas. I adore everybody in this class.” Reoccurring classes offered at RMSS include stay fit, osteofit, chair fit, gentle joint and yoga, chair yoga, walking club, zumba, tai chi, hatha yoga, rhythm and reach and fit and fun after 55. Both locations also have drop-in sports, such as table tennis, carpet bowling and snooker. Drop-in dance classes, such as line dancing, flamenco, tap, jazz and ballet, are also offered. Coming up in September is power pilates and belly dance. • The full schedule with dates and times can be found by going online at http://rmssseniors.org or by visiting the RMSS Facebook page @rmssseniors.
There’s never a dull moment at the Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society with activities like chair fit, dance and tai chi. These are just a few of the fitness activities offered at RMSS, a charity that’s been registered since 1999. RMSS has two locations, one in Maple Ridge at 12150 – 224 St., and one in Pitt Meadows at 19065 – 119 B Ave. One popular class is chair fit and it runs at 10 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Maple Ridge Activity Centre. Julia Berridge, chair fit instructor, said the class is filled with community spirit and friendship. “It’s fun, it’s community, it’s connecting. They come in and hug each other, make friends and go for coffee afterwards.” Berridge said the goal of the class is simple – to get moving. “It’s about moving, ultimately. Everyone has where they are at physically. It’s all about getting their bodies moving because if you don’t use it you will lose it.” Berridge said some participants have healthissues such as multiple sclerosis or dementia and have found that daily activities become easier after participating in chair fitness. “It helps with sleep, moving around, being able to live alone in their homes longer.” And it doesn’t only benefit seniors. Berridge enjoys the class just as much as her participants.
Participants are encouraged to participate based on their own fitness levels.
Julia Berridge, fitness instructor, said her class welcomes all levels of fitness and mobility.
Class members share smiles with fellow participants while improving their health.

Technology troubleshooting for Ridge Meadows seniors The Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society hosts drop-in classes and workshops to assist with technology. Technology is something Mary Jo Levitsky calls “second-nature” for her grandchildren, who grew up in an era of new devices. But Levitsky needs assistance to guide her through the world of tech. “My grandkids know more than I do, but at least we’re able to navigate through this mess. Our grandkids grew up with it, so for them it’s second nature. But for us it’s a learning curve.” In an ever-changing world of technology, the Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society aims to help seniors troubleshoot tech problems by hosting drop-in sessions, which Levitsky attends when issues arise. “It’s lovely to have a place to come where someone can guide you through the process, because I’m always afraid I’ll mess something up,” said Levitsky.
cables so it makes it easier. I-Pads, tablets and smartphones, there’s a lot more of that now.” Peter Smith, facilitator, has been helping at the drop-ins for approximately 10 months. Smith said their services assist with all types of technology. “It’s a mixture of everything. We help a lot of people with their day-to-day issues, from navigating smartphones, laptops, tablets and more. And the tech lounges don’t only deal with problematic devices, seniors are welcome to drop-in for anything tech-related at the cost of $1 for RMSS members. “Some of them come in with problems and some of them just want to learn all the time. I think it keeps them connected to the world. They can use Google, text their loved ones, it’s an outreach to the outside world when they may not be as mobile as others,” added Smith. Continued on page 15
Drop-in’s are offered to RMSS members at the Maple Ridge Activity Centre location on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. The Pitt Meadows Activity Centre hosts drop-ins on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Walter Schmid, drop-in facilitator, has been providing technology help at RMSS since the ’90s. Schmid said when he first started, RMSS had about six shared computers, all connected by cables. “Everything’s on Wi-Fi now. You don’t need any

Meals on Wheels delivers more than a hot lunch Meals on Wheels is a way for seniors to have healthy food and regular social contact. Meals on Wheels is one of the longest standing programs at Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services. The program has been delivering hot meals to seniors who are unable to prepare their own meals since 1971. New to the program are volunteers John and Claire Long. The couple began volunteering a couple months ago and are enjoying every minute. “It keeps us out of trouble,” Claire laughed. We’re really happy to do it, it’s a good feeling for us too.” “These people really appreciate when you bring them meals,” John added. Joanne Leginus, Community Services Director of Administration and Services, said Meals on Wheels can be used by any senior, despite age, mobility and income. “Our whole goal is supporting seniors to live in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. It is an essential service that we will provide to anyone. There are no limits at all.” While food is a life essential, Leginus said the program provides more than a tasty lunch. “Sure we deliver a hot meal, but we also provide social contact as well as a safety check.” On many occasions, the seniors are alone and this may be the only visit they get during the day.” Claire and John are happy to chat with the seniors while making their daily deliveries. “I think that’s probably the only company some of
Jack Davies receives his lunch from Meals on Wheels volunteers. them get all day,” said John. “We can’t stay awhile, but it does put a difference in their day,” added Claire. Currently the group has approximately 25 volunteers who drive, clean, communicate with the kitchen staff and route out deliveries. If a senior is unable to go in-person to sign forms, program staff can make home visits to assist with setting up a client to receive Meals on Wheels. Diana Vivian, Meals on Wheels program coordinator, said ease of service is key. “We try to make it as barrier-free as possible.” Vivian said volunteers consistently give positive feedback about the program. “I have nothing but positives. We recently had a client pass away and the fellow delivering to her had been doing so for about 10 years. They take it Continued on page 52

The St. John Ambulance therapy dog program started in June, 1992, in Peterborough, Ontario and now it boasts more than 3,354 therapy dog program volunteers and dog teams that have assisted more than 120,000 clients across the country. Locally dogs and their handlers visit Holyrood Manor, the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Public Libraries, Maple Ridge Seniors Village, McKenney Creek Hospice Residence, Ridge Meadows Hospital, Royal Crescent Gardens, the Salvation Army and Willow Manor. Although the benefits of therapy dogs are wide ranging, the main objective of the program continues to be visiting seniors and care facilities to provide mental and emotional support for the residents, says Ashten Black, programs and outreach team lead for community services with St. John Ambulance. “There are more mental health benefits, more than anything,” Black added. “We find that, as a communication outlet, it’s really beneficial. As seniors age they can have more difficulties communicating and they can become more frustrated,” said Black, especially with those suffering with certain onset of dementia. “Dogs are incredibly inclusive. They don’t pass judgement on people. They are very patient. And we just joke that they are very good listeners.” Dogs in the program range from the smallest chihuahuas to Newfoundlanders that can get as big as 74 cm high and weigh as much as 70 kg.
Black says they can break the cycle of boredom and routine in a seniors life as well as providing stability, on the flip side. “I think that there can be a lot of boredom and routine that the dogs help break up and can be a distraction of the regular goings on. Something to look forward to once a week,” said Black, noting that on the exact opposite side, when the dogs come in once a week and continuously all the time it provides enough routine for some of those patients at those homes who may be experiencing a sense of a loss of control. She also finds that having a dog around help seniors, especially those with early onset dementia, recall memories and share them with the dog’s handlers. “I think there is something special when dogs help Continued on page 55

All of the dogs in the St. John Ambulance program are capable of interacting with a variety of aids, including wheelchairs and walkers. And they can also help with physical activity providing those with more mobility with a walk down the hall or a chance to throw a ball outside on nice days. “I think spending time with a dog gives the individuals a sense of being wanted and needed. It gives them a reason to kind of get up and makes their day a little bit brighter if they know they are coming in,” said Black. All the dogs in the program come from homes and are all family pets. They have no specific training, but must pass an evaluation to be considered for the program. “As long as the dog passes the evaluation and [the handler has] an interest in volunteering then we find a good fit for the dog,” said Black. Dogs are evaluated for their enjoyment of affection and attention and how confident they are. Handlers must have good care and control over their dogs at all times with good verbal communication skills to calm the dog down. “We also look to make sure that they don’t sneak food or objects off the floor because we don’t want them to be accidentally eating pills or things like that,” said Black.
They also ask that dogs do not jump or lick the clients. “Dogs often want to show some level of affection through licking because we’re in facilities with compromised immune systems we ensure and do the best of our abilities always to prescribe by best practices for not spreading communicable disease,” Black explained. Mike Leclair, a co-team leader with Therapeutic Paws of Canada, in Cranbrook B.C., says there are immense benefits to pet therapy. Therapeutic Paws of Canada provides animal therapy resources to anybody in need. They visit seniors homes, hospitals and have a program for children to read to the dogs in schools. Leclair says for people with dementia the service is invaluable. “You hear time and time again you know somebody who is non-verbal, they haven’t spoken for several years and somebody takes their pet in, their dog, and the person becomes verbal. They’ll talk to the pet,” he said. “It can take somebody who is sitting sullen in a wheelchair and it brightens up their eyes and they become alive. Giving a dog a treat, it just brings people to life,” he said. One important consideration seniors’ homes should take into account when allowing animals onto their premises is insurance, said Leclair. “That’s the thing with the Therapeutic Paws Of Canada, all of our members, once they are evaluated Continued on page 57

Pets bring joy and companionship to seniors lives Joey was depressed and anxious after ending up at the Maple Ridge branch of the SPCA . The 15-year-old tabby had spent three days in her new surroundings and was not responding well. “It was so sad, she just didn’t want to be here,” said branch manager Krista Shaw. Staff at the Maple Ridge branch decided to put her into foster care where Joey began to perk up. Then she was adopted by Robert Elliott. Elliott, an Abbotsford resident, was searching for a companion. The 72-year-old lives alone and decided on an older cat because he didn’t want it to outlive him. He was immediately attracted to Joey. “I’m alone. It’s nice to have another heartbeat in the house,” said Elliott adding that Joey distracts him from his own worries. “She’s really good, She’s really shy and she hides in the cupboard. But she comes out and lets me pet her and she socializes all right,” Elliott continued. Shaw says when it comes to the adoption of a companion, it really depends on how mobile a senior is and what kinds of animals they are used to. “There are adamant cat people and adamant dog people and they don’t want to go back and forth,” said Shaw. Shaw says that older cats can be great companions

for seniors, especially those with mobility issues. “We have seniors come in and they are looking for a cat, they want a companion that is going to sit on the couch with them where they can have the attention they are going to give to them,” said Shaw. She would not recommend kittens because of their high energy, plus they might grow up to be too independent. Shaw’s recommendations remain the same when thinking about adopting a dog. Getting an older animal where you know the animal’s disposition ahead of time can be beneficial to a senior. Although she says it is dependent on what the senior wants and is used to. Anyone wanting a kitten or a puppy will not be denied. One of the most important things that seniors should consider when adopting a pet is what will happen to that pet if they can no longer take care of it. Shaw recommends either making arrangements ahead of time with family or friends or enrolling in the SPCA ’s Pet Survivor Care Program. If a person becomes sick or dies, the SPCA will give the pet shelter and help find it a new loving home. Elliott says more seniors should have a look at pet adoption, especially of an older animal. “I don’t think [older cats] get as much of a chance. Everyone wants to get a kitten but the older ones need a home too,” he said. Adoption fees at the B.C. SPCA are reduced for senior animals. • For more information, go to spca.bc.ca.

and they go through the steps to pass the evaluation of the monitored visits, once they do that, then they become members and we are covered with a $5 million liability insurance policy,” he said, adding that, similar to the St. John Ambulance program, the dogs are tested for real-world scenarios that could be encountered at any facility. Currently, Therapeutic Paws of Canada does not operate in the Lower Mainland. But anyone interested in becoming a team leader can contact info@tpoc.ca. Black says they can barely keep up with demand in the area and are always looking for more volunteers. They also welcome donations to continue the free service. • To donate or volunteer with the St. John Ambulance therapy dog program, go to www.sja.ca, click on community services and follow the links.
