ABBOTSFORD INTERNATIONAL AIRSHOW RETURNS FOR 56TH YEAR Promising the finest civilian and military aerobatic performances in the world, Canada’s premier aviation festival is back. This is the 60th anniversary of the North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD) agreement and to celebrate, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the US Air Force (USAF) will perform a commemorative flypast in formation. “This is pretty much the most unique bilateral defence partnership in the world,” said Dave Reith, Operations Manager. The 2018 Abbotsford International Airshow takes place August 10, 11 and 12. Designated Canada’s National airshow, it’s committed to aviation excellence, aerospace advancement, and community participation. From 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. the Friday Twilight Show features the US Navy Blue Angels, Canadian Forces Snowbirds, CF-18 Hornet Twilight Demo and a fireworks finale.
Saturday and Sunday are full-day shows with flying events, attractions, exhibits and concessions. “We have a fantastic lineup of award-winning civilian performers including local resident Rob ‘Scratch’ Mitchell flying in the Acemaker T-33 Shooting Star Jet,” said Reith. Other featured performances are demos from fan-favourite A-10 Thunderbolt II, RCAF Search and Rescue, USAF Heritage Flight and SkyHawks Parachute Demonstration Team. After a 15-year absence, the US Navy Blue Angels return to the Abbotsford International Airshow to co-headline with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. The Blue Angels will fly all three days of the airshow. With more than 14 acres of entertainment and interactive activities for all ages, ground attractions include a virtual reality arcade, static aircraft display, autograph book and the Science of Flight presented
After a 15-year absence, and their first appearance anywhere in Canada in seven years, the US Navy Blue Angels are co-headlining with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds at the 2018 Abbotsford International Airshow. In 1946, the flight exhibition team was created to raise the public’s interest in naval aviation and boost morale. Now in their 72nd year, this also marks the Blue Angels’ 32nd year flying the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet. The F/A-18s are painted in blue and gold, the official colours of the US Navy. The Blue Angels also operate a support aircraft, a Lockheed Martin C-130, nicknamed “Fat Albert” due to its size and shape. Their mission is to showcase the pride and professionalism of the US Navy and Marine Corps by inspiring a culture of excellence and service to their country through flight demonstrations and community outreach. Since 1946, the Blue Angels have performed for almost 500 million fans. They will fly all three days, August 10 through 12, of the Abbotsford International Airshow.

This fencedin 19+ beer garden features DJ music between flying events, ground-level seating and a dozen craft breweries to sample. Tickets to The Grandstand include airshow admission. Airshow tickets can be upgraded to The Grandstand at the gate. Nightly camping as well as full weekend campground passes are available for all three days of the show. From August 10 to 12, the 56th annual Abbotsford International Airshow takes place at the Abbotsford International Airport. FLY IN FORMATION From August 10 to 12, the Canadian and US air force demonstration teams showcase their unique bi-lateral partnership by flying in formation at the Abbotsford International Airshow. “No two countries work closer together to defend the continent in the air than Canada and the US do,” said Dave Reith, Operations Manager. The special flights commemorate the 60th anniversary of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Established in 1953, the agreement between Canada and the US is a bi-national military command to monitor and defend North America. The Canadian NORAD Region in Winnipeg, MB maintains CF-18 aircraft along with the CC-130T Hercules in support of the NORAD mission. The CF-18 Hornet was specially painted to commemorate the anniversary.
Touring the airshow circuit, the CF-18 Demonstration Team showcases the skills required to keep the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) among the best aviation organizations in the world. Promising to deliver spectacular performances, Captain Stefan Porteous is the pilot for the 2018 CF-18 Demonstration Team. Born and raised in Comox BC, Porteous was inspired to become a fighter pilot at age 11. In 2008 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a member of the RCAF. In 2014 he graduated from 410 Tactical Fighter Squadron in Cold Lake AB, qualifying to fly the CF-18 Hornet and becoming a fighter pilot in the RCAF. The NORAD mission is to prevent air attacks against North America, safeguard the sovereign airspaces of Canada and the US and provide aerospace and maritime warning for North America.

The Abbotsford Airshow’s Twilight Show on Friday, August 10 will delight crowds with a unique nighttime experience, not to be missed. It offers a completely different show experience, jam-packed with daring routines in the fading light of the evening. Gates open at 3:00pm with access to the Static Display, Exhibit Area and Concessions. Stroll through these attractions in the late afternoon before the evening show begins. Here are just a few of the highlights in Friday’s Twilight schedule. US Navy Blue Angels are scheduled to launch the evening activities with a thrilling performance at 4:30. This demonstration team is back in Abbotsford for the first time since 2003. Opening Ceremonies & Anthems will officially kick off this year’s Airshow just after 5:30,
followed by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds at 6:00. These beautiful planes are gorgeous against the early evening sky. The Static Display closes at 7:30 so there’s time to take a last close-up (and inside) look at your favourites. Souvenirs are available on the grounds and there’s time to catch a bite of dinner before the thrilling heart-pounding CF-18 Hornet Twilight Demonstration starts at 8:30pm. You’ll want to be sitting down for this performance. The show wraps up with a spectacular Fireworks Finale lighting up the sky starting at 9:45 with gates closing at 10:30.
