The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer “Dog Days”. The name came about because they associated the hottest days of summer with the star Sirius. Sirius was known as the “Dog Star” because it was the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). Sirius also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. Sirius is so bright that the ancient Romans thought it radiated extra heat toward Earth. During the summer, when Sirius rises and sets with the sun, they thought Sirius added heat to the sun’s heat to cause hotter summer temperatures. For the ancient Romans, the dog days of summer occurred from late July to late August. Although the “Dog Days” of summer are usually the hottest, they don’t have anything to do with either dogs or the star Sirius. Instead, the tilt of the earth explains why these days tend to be the summer’s hottest.

PLEASE NOTE: Registration for Table Exhibits is Wednesday, August 15, 2018 – 12 noon–8pm. ABSOLUTELY BSOLUTELY NO HORSES ARE TO BE RIDDEN OUTSIDE COMPETITION AREAS OR DESIGNATED RIDING AREAS. ALL HORSES AND LIVESTOCK ARE TO BE LED BETWEEN STABLES/PENS TO COMPETITION AREAS AND/OR TRAILERS BY THE EXHIBITOR. GENERAL RULES to ALL EXHIBITORS: 1. Exhibitors agree to abide by the rules and regulations set out herein. Failure to comply will render the Exhibitor liable to being barred from exhibiting this year and subsequent years, at the discretion of the Nechako Valley Exhibition Society Executive. 2. Any Exhibitor under the infl uence of liquor and/or drugs will be excused from the Exhibition. 3. Exhibits are left at the owner’s risk. Reasonable care will be given to exhibits, however, the Directors, Chairpersons and Nechako Valley Exhibition Society are not responsible for the loss or damage of any exhibits. 4. Each Exhibitor must make out a separate entry form for each Division they enter (see individual Divisions for appropriate entry forms). 5. Where there are insuffi cient entries in each of several classes, the Chairperson and Judge reserve the right to consolidate such classes. 6. Animals with infectious diseases may be asked to withdraw on the advice of a veterinarian. 7. Should any question arise not provided for in the General Rules, the decision of the Nechako Valley Exhibition Society Executive is FINAL. 8. All exhibitors handling animals are required to sign an ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF RISK AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY WAIVER upon arrival on the Nechako Valley Exhibition grounds. For anyone under the Age of Majority (19), the waiver will need to be signed by a parent or guardian. Waivers are printed in the fair book. Please read the waiver and complete the name and address section ONLY. You may then either mail the waiver with your entry forms or bring to your Division Chairperson, whichever is directed in your division rules. Signatures on waivers must be provided at the Fair upon sign-in and receipt of your exhibitor package. 9. Exhibits MUST NOT be removed until 4:00 pm Sunday August 19, 2018. Special permission must be obtained from the Division Chairperson if earlier removal is required. At 4:00 pm, please check out with the Chairperson before removing for protection of exhibits. 10. The Nechako Valley Exhibition Society is NOT responsible for items left after 5:00 pm Sunday August 19, 2018. 11. Each Division has special rules specifi c to the Division, Sections and/or Classes. These rules are found within each Division. Please read these rules over carefully before making your submission. Please contact the Division Chairperson if you have any questions. 12. There will be NO vehicles permitted through back gate without a parking pass. NO EXCEPTIONS! 13. All dogs MUST be on a leash at all times. Please clean-up after your dog. Dogi-pots stations around grounds! NO DOGS IN LIVESTOCK BARNS.

EXHIBITOR FEES: Exhibitors Pass: Anyone submitting an exhibit or showing livestock during the Nechako Valley Exhibition can choose to pay for an Exhibitor’s Pass in lieu of the gate entry fee. An Exhibitor’s Pass costs $12.00 and allows access to the grounds for the duration of the fair. YOU CAN ONLY PURCHASE YOUR EXHIBITOR’S PASS AT THE TIME YOU ENTER YOUR EXHIBIT, OR WHEN YOU SEND IN YOUR ENTRY FORM. - See division rules. Exhibitor Passes are NOT available at the gate. See your Division ‘Special Rules’ for further information. Camping is available at $20.00 for the weekend. There are no hydro hook-ups and open campfi res are not allowed. Hot showers are located on site. Please contact Exhibition Office.

How to Buy: • All 4-H market STEERS, SWINE, SHEEP, POULTRY AND RABBITS, and PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECTS will be on display in the 4-H Barn for the duration of the Exhibition, and are available for purchase at the AUCTION held at 4:00 pm, Saturday, August 18, 2018. • Animals are auctioned off to the highest bidder on a per pound live weight basis, e.g. $0.80/lb or $80.00 per hundred weight or by lot. The animals are weighed on Thursday, August 16, 2018. • Payment is to be made to the Vanderhoof 4-H Council and buyers must state how they will be taking the animals purchased from the Exhibition. The 4-H Council has arranged for transportation of beef, swine and sheep to an abattoir, unless otherwise specified by the Buyer. Poultry and rabbits are the sole responsibility of the buyer. • BUYERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ANIMALS AFTER 4:00 pm SUNDAY, August 19, 2018.

All Exhibitors in this Division must be registered members in the 4-H Club, in the project entered. 2. All animals to be used by the member project for the current year. 3. All animals may be shown in one class only, except in cases where the Exhibitor wishes to enter open classes. Exhibitors entering the open classes must pay an entry fee of $1.00. 4. There is NO entry fee for achievement classes. 5. Bedding and water will be supplied. Member is responsible for feed for their animals. 6. There will be NO meal tickets given out. 7. Judges decision is fi nal. 8. All judging will be done in DANISH SYSTEM. 9. No horns on animals, except registered females. 10. Sheep must be sheared. 11. Market animals must be castrated. 12. No weight restrictions on beef, sheep and swine. 13. Only the member showing the animal must groom the animal. 14. No liquor or drugs on the grounds. 15. All barns close at 11:00 pm. 16. No sleeping in the barns. 17. Accommodation will be provided for campers in a designated area at a fee of $20.00 per camping unit. 18. No parking trucks or vehicles in front of the barns. 19. All animals must be on the grounds by Thursday August 16, 2018 no later than 7:00 pm. 20. Entry forms must be in by July 31, 2018 at the 4-H Offi ce, Vanderhoof. 21. JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP: Age 9 – 12 years as of December 31, 2017. 22. SENIOR SHOWMANSHIP: Age 13 – 19 years of age as of December 31, 2017. 23. DIVISION 2 - BEEF CATTLE Entry Info: Brenda Wheeler 250-567-4020 Email: north.40@live.ca Judge: Katie & Doug Roxburgh Bentley, Alberta Entry per unit: $15.00 (non-refundable). Entry fees and a photocopy of registration papers or proof of registration, must accompany the entry form. Note: One breed per entry form. Entries must be received by: Tuesday, August 7, 2018 Prizes: 1st $70.00; 2nd $50.00; 3rd $40.00; 4th $30.00 Special Rules: 1. Cattle must be in barn on Thursday, by 6pm. Cattle exhibited cannot be removed from beef area until 4:00 pm Sunday. 2. For a breed to be eligible to be shown on its own, three Exhibitors and 15 head is required. 3. To be eligible for full prize money there must be two entries in a class. Half prize money will be paid for classes of less than two entries. 4. Classes may be split at the discretion of the Beef Committee when the number of exhibits exceeds 13. Prize money will be paid on each split. The top two entries from each split will then qualify for a championship for the class (ribbons only). 5. ** Classes 200 & 201 - If a female with a heifer calf at foot is declared Senior Champion or Reserve Senior Champion, the heifer calf is not eligible for Class 203 Female, Calf. 6. All cattle exhibited in the registered classes must be entered in the name of the registered owner. The animal’s age, and registration number must be given on the entry form. 7. The said owner is to have been in possession of same animal at least one month prior to the date of entry. 8. All animals exhibited in Registered Beef Classes MUST be legibly tattooed. Clean ears so tattoos are readable. All animals must have CCIA tags. 9. The original Certificate of Registration must be produced if requested by the Committee. 10. Livestock Exhibitors WILL BE REQUIRED to place their names and addresses over their exhibits in the stock barn. Exhibitor’s promotional, advertising, and educational information is to be within their alloted stall space. General space will be allocated in the barn for breed association and cattlemen displays. 11. All animals must be under proper control at all times. 12. All animals exhibited shall be free from contagious or infectious diseases. The Committee reserves the right
to have any animal inspected by a veterinarian. The Committee may order the removal from the grounds or isolation of any animal considered by the veterinarian to be contagious or infectious. 13. All bulls over one year of age must be handled with nose ring or humbug at all times. 14. All cattle stalled are to be shown or judged. No nurse cows. 15. All cattle tied in stalls must also be tied with a safety rope. 16. Exhibitor number must be worn in show ring. 17. The Chairperson in charge of the barn will allocate stall space based on entries received at deadline. 18. Exhibitors to abide by barn rules. 19. Read ‘Notice to Exhibitors’ on Page 4. 20. "The Canine Stars Stunt Dog Show is an exciting extreme sports production for family entertainment – highlighting popular dog sports such as dock diving, freestyle frisbee disc, flyball racing, high jumping, and dog agility with multiple breeds of dogs and mixes who have been rescued or adopted from shelters. Keri Caraher and Ethan Wilhelm began competing in dog sports with their personal pet dogs in 2001 in Colorado. They competed across North America at the highest levels in Agility, Flyball racing, Disc Dog, and Dock Diving, including earning top placements at National and World Champion events. In 2005 they began performing professionally with their dogs at Theme Parks, Fairs, Pet Expos and Zoos, including tours across Canada and the Virgin Islands. In January 2012, The Canine Stars team was created to bring our amazing rescued dogs to even larger audiences, while emphasizing and encouraging pet adoption and promoting a strong interactive bond with man’s best friend."

Team pull entries are NOT to be included with halter and performance entries. Team Pull Entry Fee: Team $35.00 Weigh-In: Sunday 8:00 - 9:00 am. Anyone not weighed in at this time will not be eligible to enter pull. The Weigh-in will be conducted by the chairperson or their designate. Any other weights will not be accepted.
Please Note the Weigh-in is Sunday 8:00-9:00 am only for the Team Pull. All Teams will be weighed in. Pulling rules will be posted at the Exhibition. The committee reserves the right to refuse horses in poor body condition. Spot checks by a veterinarian for contesting horses can also be requested by the Show Committee. Random drug testing may occur on contesting teams at the discretion of the Show Committee. Any item not covered in these rules will be ruled on by the Heavy Horse Show Committee. Double Tie Stall: $10.00 per day Clean-up Deposit: $15.00 per stall. Clean-up deposit will be refunded after inspection of stall(s) when ready to leave. If a stall is used and not cleaned, cost of rent and cleaning will be deducted from prize money won. Special Rules 1. It is mandatory that Exhibitors have coverage under the Horse Council of BC. 2. The date of birth will be considered to January 1st in the year the animal was foaled. 3. Classes will gather in a collecting ring ten minutes prior to their respective classes. Any Exhibitor who is not ready when his or her class is called will automatically forfeit the entry fee. 4. All foals must be exhibited in the halter. Mares may accompany foals into the ring at the discretion of the Exhibitor.
5. All animals must be tied or stalled when not being actively exhibited. No animal will be allowed to run at large on the Exhibition Grounds at any time. 6. ALL Wagon poles MUST have a SAFETY STRAP on the neck yoke. 7. Any horse not suffi ciently under control shall be asked to leave the ring. 8. Header or swamper required with hitch classes. All attendants will be presentable and in proper attire. 9. A junior is anyone 18 years old or younger. Proof of age may be requested. 10. Juniors must have a knowledgeable horsemen with them at all times while in carriage or cart. 11. No stallions to be handled by a Junior Exhibitor. 12. Read ‘Notice of Exhibitors’ on Page 4. 13. HEAVY HORSE PULL @ 2:00 PM IN THE INDOOR ARENA Team Pull Entry Fee: $35.00 per team Prize Money: $3,000 added. To qualify for $100 hook up money the team must complete one pull of their own weight. Pull will be pounds over teams’ weight. Pay out to 6th place.
DISQUALIFICATION: 1. Riding on logs. 2. Arguing with the Judge. 3. Swearing, whipping, Slapping or Rippling of Reins. 4. If off course, each contestant must enter the course right side of pylons, and exit left side of pylons. 5. Pre marking of Stops 6. Passing of lines over pylons or walking on the wrong side of the pylon (pylons are to be thought of as tall trees).
DRAFT HORSE LOG SKIDDING RULES ENTRY INFORMATION: No multiple use of teams, Teamster may enter as many teams as he or she desires as long as entry fees are paid for each team. The judge will meet with teamsters, prior to competition to go over the rules.
Stops: On stops, a penalty point will be assessed for each inch under or over on each stop, teamster will be scored to the closest inch. Any movement of logs constitutes a pull. The team with the highest number of points wins. In the case of a tie the team with the fastest time wins.
THE COURSE: Parallel lines 24 feet apart. End lines or closed end 12 feet from last pylon. Distance between pylons to be 12 feet. One log 12 feet long. If pylons are moved during contest the Judge to reset. This will be timed and fastest time will break any ties.
