Ponoka schools are highly regarded The community is served by public and separate school systems, all of which provide excellent instruction and programming that benefits all students. Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) operates Ponoka Elementary School that offers Kindergarten to Grade 6 in addition to its extremely popular Bright Futures Playschool program. A new state-of-the-art playground was erected at the school just last year. Also in the immediate area, WCPS has a pair of rural K-6 schools in Crestomere and Mecca Glen. Ponoka Secondary Campus is the Grade 7 to 12 public school that provides a great variety of options and athletics programming as well as its student engagement in the community. WCPS also offers alternative education through The Brick Learning Centre facility. As for separate education, Ponoka is served by both Catholic and Christian programs. St. Augustine School runs classes from K to 12 as part of the St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic School Division and is well known for its community involvement plus commitment to academics. Ponoka Christian School operates Kindergarten to Grade 9 education with a focus on being an independent and interdenominational school community with a Christian foundation.

Trails and adventure for all An extensive system of paved and other trails provide a fantastic forum for residents and visitors. The Battle River in Ponoka is the basis of the system, with its pavement that winds its way for several kilometres along the scenic valley. It is ideal for any level of walker or runner and perfect for a gentle family bike ride. In addition, the valley has other more adventurous paths off the beaten trail that provide hikers and bikers with a great challenge. Those taking in the trails can also enjoy seeing wildlife such as deer and beaver that frequent the river valley. And for anyone that takes their dogs along, there is an off-leash area located at the north end of the trail system. Centennial Park, located on Highway 2A, is another amenity that people can enjoy. Complete with paths and benches, the park is a staple for families as the
splash park and large pond are big attractions. The park also has a stage, which is used to host concerts, various events and birthday parties. JJ Collett Natural Area And just a few kilometres south of Ponoka, the JJ Collett Provincial Natural area is a pristine forested area with paths for hikers and 635 acres for nature lovers to explore. The aspen parkland, natural sand dunes and white spruce trees are just some of the natural features people will see travelling the 18 kilometres of trails. There are also wetlands filled with wildlife and grassland meadows in this ecologically diverse habitat.

Family and youth recreation a priority for Ponoka
Ponoka’s Centennial Park has become a focal point in the summer months. Along with Aboriginal Day festivities, the Town of Ponoka hosts a movie in the park event and more.

Ponoka’s families are active and with the many exciting recreation opportunities, there’s no end of the things people can take on. During the summer months young children can take in the splash park right in the heart of Ponoka and Centennial Park along Highway 2A. Other additions to the splash park are recently added gazebos and seating areas ideal for family picnics. Along with the splash park is the Lions Club pond which has trout for those who have a hankering to fish. Most recently, an active group of community volunteers have pitched in their time to create a family skate pond in the winter plus a skate path was created. It was one of the more popular additions to the town that had kids of all ages enjoying. Racquetball, squash and wallyball Most people don’t realize it, but under the stands of the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex are two racquetball courts. One of the courts is marked to allow for a solid game of squash and both are outfitted with hooks for nets to allow teams to play wallyball, a sport that is similar to volleyball and uses the walls as part of the play. Health care well served in Ponoka The health amenities available in Ponoka rival those in larger centres and provide excellent coverage for the region they serve. At the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, a fully staffed emergency unit highly compliments the 24 hour, seven day a week patient services along with laboratory, radiology and obstetrical services. The facility is also home to a renown endoscopy program for central Alberta and renown long-term care unit. Unique specialization Ponoka is also home to a facility that is recognized around the world for its work with patients dealing with issues and conditions that need special care. The Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury — located in a quiet and large spot of land on the southeast edge of town — provides treatment and care for individuals. The centre includes specialized units for brain injury and rehabilitation, adult psychiatry, geriatric mental health and dementia as well as many other mental health professional programming. Senior’s care In addition to full-time hospital care, Ponoka has some excellent housing and lodges for seniors, with many moving in from around the region. Legacy Place and Golden Leisure Lodge, both operated by the Rimoka Housing Foundation, give seniors with varying levels of need a place to be near the services they require while still allowing some independence in their lives. There are also other care options available at Reid
Manor, the Northcott Care Centre and at a relatively new addition to independent living for seniors — Sunrise Village. Ponoka’s Family and Community Support Services is available for seniors with a variety of community volunteer based programs — including Meals on Wheels, home care and transportation services — for people who want to remain living in their home for as long as possible while still being able to get out and be active. Ponoka’s new and larger Battle River Medical Clinic — which opened in March 2017 — is a modern facility that houses the community’s doctors as well as a list of professionals and services the Wolf Creek Primary Care Network. Patients have access to dieticians, heart health education, social workers and many other programs. Ponoka is also home to eye care professionals, dental health practices, chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapy businesses and a spa providing both physical and spiritual care. Rising Sun Clubhouse Not to be left out, the Rising Sun Clubhouse in the downtown area, provides programs and assistance to those living with social and physical challenges with the goal of helping them improve their lives. Taking care of our youth The Ponoka Youth Centre (PYC) has a variety of wonderful programs and activities for kids and teenagers looking for more to do after school. There are programs available for kids from Kindergarten all the way to Grade 12, with after-school care in addition to later evening and some weekend events throughout the year — all provided at a low cost with subsidies being available. PYC has youth drop-in on Friday and Saturday evenings, which is a great hang out for friends who can play board games and play video games or even take on others in a game of pool. In addition to the many activities planned after school, there are program choices that foster leadership, empowerment and assist students that want to improve with academics and other skills to transition out of school. There are also programs offered during the summer, through a variety

of low cost field trips out of town and activities inside Ponoka. The PYC operates under the same roof as Ponoka’s Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and the Boys and Girls Club of Wolf Creek. The former of which promotes traditional mentoring and an in-school mentor program while the latter provides youth services, activities and support. Along with some technology learning there’s also an in-house tutor to help with school projects. This group has been able to engage youths in a way that allows them to have fun while being in a safe environment. Hundreds of kids access the PYC’s programming every year and it shows no sign of slowing down. The summer program also gives kids a chance to get out of the house for exciting field trips while parents can still focus on work.

But don’t let that cool you off, the town also offers a six-sheet curling rink to keep folks busy. Nearby Gull Lake is a much-used amenity for winter fishing or summer swim activities. Indoor swimming Families make good use of the 25-metre salt-water swimming pool at the Ponoka Aquaplex, which is complete with kiddy pool, sauna and hot tub. There is also a 12-foot deep tank with diving board, climbing wall and a rope swing. Companies have been known to sponsor swim days when school is out. Golf courses Ponoka hosts two amazing gold courses. The Ponoka Golf Club is found on the eastern side of town nestled along the Battle River and boasts 18 holes for golf lovers. Most recently the club has been home to several important Alberta Golf amateur challenges. The Wolf Creek Golf Resort is 10 minutes south of Ponoka on Highway 2A and houses two 18-hole courses. Ponoka Festival of Trees improves hospital services There’s no doubt about it, the Ponoka Festival of Trees is now a staple community fundraiser. With proceeds to benefit the Ponoka and District Health Foundation, the festival has now raised more than $363,000 over the last four years. Each year has exceeded the last and Ponoka residents show their support at every event. The 2017 edition broke the $125,000 barrier despite an economic turndown. In addition to improving bath and shower facilities for the long term care unit at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, the money will also go to other improvements, which include ceiling radiant heat and specialized bathing equipment.
Along with pediatric support, the festival has ensured the hospital’s endoscopy program can continue to grow. The residents of Ponoka and the surrounding area have embraced the Festival with open arms and it shows in growth that each year brings. Ponoka’s first annual Festival of Trees took place in 2014 and was able to raise enough to donate $59,500 to the Ponoka Hospital Foundation. Organizers are already in the works looking at how the 2018 festival will be. This event undoubtedly brings benefits to the community and creates a strong sense of community, family and engagement.

Ponoka Stampede Continued from Page B18 As anyone who has been to the Stampede will tell you, it’s an event not to be missed be it rain or shine. And that goes for the opening night rodeo show June 26, featuring a concert by The Road Hammers along with the popular free Dodge truck giveaway and a spectacular fireworks show, which will be repeated on several nights throughout the week. The other stage show performance will see huge country music star Trace Adkins play his trademarked sound for the crowd on June 28. The rodeo will also feature the usual comedic stylings of Crash Cooper as well as some trick riding by Rae Lynn Armstrong. Speaking of shows, West Coast Amusements will once again be on location with its midway rides and games to compliment the other events that will surround the Stampede grounds. From the Stampede talent show to the farmers market, art show and auction as well as cattle penning and mounted shooter events over at the Calnash Ag Event Center, there are plenty of things to keep busy when you’re not in a seat at the rodeo. The community is heavily involved during the week with a variety of pancake breakfasts around town and the huge ‘Three Mile Parade� on June 29 that brings everyone out. And just for the adults, there is the beer gardens and dance at the arena complex on June 29 and 30.

New learning centre brings post-secondary education to Ponoka One of the more recent developments in Ponoka is a new learning centre. Construction for the exciting project is expected to be completed by the end of the summer. This large building will house a brand new learning facility with post-secondary education. Campus Alberta Central (a partnership between Olds and Red Deer College) will bring post-secondary classes into Ponoka and will share a space on the first floor with the new home for the Ponoka Jubilee Library. The modern building will also be home to Ponoka’s Town Hall on the upper floors. It’s a development that hasn’t been seen in this town for many years.
To expand on the exciting location, which used to be the home of the old Ponoka General Hospital, community groups are developing a public park, which includes one acre of gardens and paths with benches and more. There has been much anticipation for this new facility both from residents and businesses. The five-acre location will also hold a special care facility under the helm of the Lacombe Action Group. For several decades the old general hospital sat in this location and while there was much history in the facility, it had outgrown its life. This new building sits on the north end of Ponoka’s downtown space.

Ponoka Ag Society moving forward The backbone of rural communities has been the local agricultural society and the one in Ponoka is keeping the traditions while also staying progressive. The Ponoka Agricultural Society, which originated in the early 1900s, has evolved from its bench show and hosting community events to being part of one of Alberta’s premier indoor rodeo and agricultural event centres. The society is one of the few left in Alberta that runs a purely agricultural show, recently renamed the Home, Hobby and Horticultural Show. It continues to grow in spite of the trend to fewer farms and less rural residents, to become among the largest agricultural shows in the province. Having helped in the construction of the Calnash Ag Event Centre, the society has been able to establish itself as the go-to place for a huge variety of events, meetings and shows. The centre is the result of a partnership with the town and county of Ponoka, the Ponoka Agricultural Society plus the Ponoka Stampede Association and was created as an economic driver for the town. There’s hardly a weekend that the centre isn’t busy and every year the operation continues to see growth. From rodeos, barrel racing and team roping to show jumping, dressage, cutting events and sales, the centre continues to attract crowds along with new events. This includes the Alberta Barrel Racing Association finals, the Alberta High Schcool Rodeo finals and the Vault Canada national championship to name just a few of the prestigious events. Farmers Market brings fresh fruit and more to Ponoka Folks with a taste for local arts and produce are always excited about the Ponoka Farmer’s Market. The market runs every Wednesday from May to September and ramps up during the Ponoka Stampede week. While organizers usually close the market for the rest of the year, they do get busy during special seasons like Christmas. Vendors come from as far as British Columbia selling the finest fresh fruits and vegetables and local farmers also sell the best carrots and other vegetables grown in the area. Stop by for a coffee, farm-fresh eggs or for those eager to see the local crafts, shoppers will find artwork, home-based businesses and wide variety of vendors to choose from. Approximately 45 vendors come each week to sell their products. The Farmer’s Market focusses on local produce, crafts
