Welcome With a population of close to 15,000, Sylvan Lake is one of the largest towns in Alberta. Also a young community, 54 per cent of the population is under the age of 35 and 26 per cent of the population is under 16. During the summer months, the town draws people from all over Central Alberta and elsewhere to enjoy the lake and town. The lake is generally full of sailboats, motorboats, jet skis and those enjoying a host of watersports throughout the summer months. On weekends, the picnic and playground area along the beach is packed with tourists from nearby cities and towns. Lake Shore Drive is lined with a variety of places to eat, patios to enjoy a cool summer beverage and shops to meander through. Accommodations for those visiting Sylvan range from hotels along Lake Shore Drive to bed and breakfast options throughout the town. The winter season stays busy with a different set of activities on the lake. Once the ice is thick enough, the Town clears space for people to skate. Ice huts pop up all over
to Sylvan Lake the lake with anglers looking to catch the next record size fish. Snowmobiles, motorbikes ready to race with ice studs and ATVs are seen on the lake throughout the cold winter months. To those history buffs who enjoy discovering the beginnings of a place, several historical places throughout town are marked with plaques, including with the Sylvan Lake Stone Castle located at 5031-50A Avenue, just south of the current newspaper office. Also known as the Château de l’Amour or the Castle of Love, the castle was built by two of Sylvan Lake’s first entrepreneurs, Raymond and Charles Archambault and their community for Raymond’s bride Eugenie Marie Marguerite Henriettie Thomi. When talking with people who have moved to the town, many of them say it was the lake that drew them to this location but the community that kept them here. This year’s Discover Sylvan Lake is full of ideas for things to do and interesting facts to know about what this community has created together.

At last, you’re here! We’ve been waiting for you to show up to enjoy the charm of Sylvan Lake. If you’re a regular visitor you’ll note some changes in our beloved town. A number of new and exciting businesses have opened, a few have (sadly) closed their doors, while some of your old favorites have introduced “Visitor Friendly” changes to make your stay even more memorable. With the inevitability of change comes some great opportunities for Sylvan Lake very soon. Between a new Festival and Event Strategy and the much anticipated redevelopment of Lakefront Park, you can bet the next couple of years will bring even more reasons to come back or invest in Sylvan Lake. With Sylvan Lake being such a summer hot spot in Central Alberta, this community goes to great efforts to animate the town with fantastic summer events and features. Sylvan Lake’s fireworks draw crowds from all over, and who wouldn’t want to watch Jaws right ON the lake, anyway? Weekends in Sylvan Lake are sure to be packed with fun this year. As the seasons change, so too
does the pace of life here, but Sylvan Lake lights up! One change the Chamber helped usher in last year is this point of interest that garnered many rosy-cheeked smiles. Providing a marvelous backdrop to create family memories, the Waterfront Winter Village is a magical attraction of seasonal lights and public bonfires. The lights go on and stay on nightly from December through March with local businesses making it all possible. In order to fully discover Sylvan Lake, you must first delve into the rich history of how we got to where we are today. The year was 1898. Alexandre Loiselle and his son Louis came from Michigan to the area now known as Sylvan Lake. At first the family was discouraged to settle the area due to the heavy timber surrounding the lake. The Faucher family arrived later that year - making the great three day journey from Red Deer. The two families lived together in a 20 ft. by 20 ft. log cabin covered by a sod roof. Together they pushed through that first tough winter, setting the scene for a long lasting community that would be built on partnership and perseverance. The aboriginal people living in the area referred to the lake as Kinabik or ‘Snake Lake’ in reference to the many garter snakes in the area at the time. In 1903 the name was changed to Sylvan Lake from the Latin word, sylvanus, meaning ‘of a forest’. Originally settled by french speaking immigrants from Quebec and the United States the region would become host to a number of Estonian and Finnish settlers over the years. Two integral rail lines being completed around 1912 led to the Town’s incorporation in 1913. Sylvan Lake quickly became a popular destination for families and cottages began to appear all around the town. The Town of Sylvan has grown steadily over the years but the history remains to this day. Spread throughout the waterfront area you will find nostalgic trips down memory lane. The Town’s history is available for viewing on plaques and signage located on light posts and other surfaces. Sept.24 was lake and lakeside clean up day with 15 teams of five on land, 21 divers and 12 paddlers in canoes and kayaks in attendance to help gather garbage.

Last year in late September, 15 teams of five on land, 21 divers and 12 paddlers in canoes and kayaks on Sylvan Lake came out to clean up garbage. All the garbage collected was counted and categorized using tally sheets. Every group on land reported cigarette butts as their most picked up item. People participated for many reasons. Gabriel Conway from École Mother Teresa School was out with Michelle Pilote picking up garbage for volunteer points in a religion class. The main portion of their haul? Cigarette butts. Jaime Stroud was out with Sylvan Agencies. “Some are doing the cleanup for Canada participACTION points,” she said. When asked what she was finding the most of, again the answer was: cigarette butts. A group of four NAIT students came down for the second year from the Biological Sciences Program. “It’s something to do to help out with the environment,” said Gareth McKenzie, who is specializing in environmental sciences. “It’s doing our part where we can.” Within the first hour of the cleanup the team of four had already picked up over 600 cigarette butts. Cathie McCuaig, executive director at Alberta Underwater Council was present to help with diver’s safety. “Remember to ditch your weights in an emergency but don’t ditch them if you hear a boat,” she cautioned two divers as they headed into the lake. continued on page 11

continued from page 10 She explained that visibility is generally about ten to fifteen feet underwater but once divers start digging through the weeds and stirring up the bottom, that can change to inches so you can hear the boat but can’t tell where it’s coming from. The divers brought up garbage and handed it off to the paddlers to take into shore. Since the first event in 2003 with only 12 divers from Edmonton, the event has grown and now draws divers from Calgary, Edmonton, Rocky Mountain House, Lacombe and Red Deer. The event is part of The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, a national conservation initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund that works with communities bordering on bodies of water.

The entrepreneurial spirit of Sylvan Lake started long before the Waterfront Area Development Plan. Part of Sylvan’s history includes a group of French settlers who contributed to the beginnings of the town’s first newspaper, post office, hardware and grocery stores. And like many beginnings, the spirit of the Town also includes a love story. The story is about Eugenie Marie Marguerite Henriettie Thomi and Raymond Archambault, the couple and love story connected with the Sylvan Lake Stone Castle located at 5031-50A Avenue, just south of the current newspaper office. Also known as the Château de l’Amour or the Castle of Love, the builtfrom-scratch stone castle still stands, along with several additions, boarded up windows and front door. Rumour has it the castle was modelled after Eugenie’s family’s castle in France. This historical landmark of Sylvan Lake is hidden behind a wall of trees. To a casual passerby who has no idea a castle exists in Alberta’s largest town, the crumbling stone structure might escape notice. Over the years the structure has been added to and built upon so the original form is hidden and enclosed. The castle was started around 1905 before Raymond and Eugenie were married by Raymond and his brother Charles. Also a stone mason, Charles played a vital role in building the castle. Progress was slow at first. Another young resident of Sylvan Lake at the time, Ada Hagerman, watched the building process and her memories were captured in an interview with the Sylvan Lake News in January, 1981. “At first they built a raft made of a plank and two logs and pushed it up and down the lakeshore picking up special rocks for the castle.” Once the stones were onshore they dragged the stones to their current location, using a pole nailed to a deerskin hide. Others from the community carried as many stones as they could stack in their arms and walked them to the site. Eventually the gift of a wheelbarrow sped up the process of gathering and moving the stones for the structure and later on a team of horses drew wagons full of the stones to be added to the building. The castle was finished between 1910 and 1911. Raymond and his brother, Charles, had already played key roles in building up Sylvan Lake before Eugenie joined the community. Raymond owned the shoe store, Loiselle Archambault and Company before he joined Charles to expand the first grocery store to include a dining hall, dance hall, feed stable and 100 foot horse shed. In May 1907, Charles became the Town’s first postmaster. By June of the same year, the two brothers had a stagecoach running three times a week between Sylvan Lake and Red Deer. Raymond went back to France for the winter in 1912 where he and Eugenie were married. Eugenie’s family did not take kindly to the couple’s love and kicked the couple out of France after they were married at the Trinity Church in Paris on March 26, 1912. Interestingly, Eugenie’s father, Francis Thome was the composer who was best known in 1890 for having composed the incidental music for Romeo and Juliet. A year after the couple was married and and came to Sylvan Lake, Raymond started the Town’s first newspaper, The Sylvan Lake Times. The couple lived in the castle for three years, using the flat roof as a place to keep goats and sheep until they build a fence around the yard and sheds. The story of the couple ends simply and without much embellishment. After three years, the couple moved to Montreal where Raymond worked at the French Consulate until he passed away in 1918. All that’s said of Eugenie at this point is that she returned to France. However, the castle continued to play a role in the community, passed along from owner to owner throughout the years to serve as a honeymoon castle, residence and business for many locals. While it now has fallen into disrepair, the castle still stands as a reminder of the humble beginnings of Sylvan Lake and the community that left everything behind to start something brand new.

Provincial park no more
The strip of beach provincially owned for many years now belongs to the Town of Sylvan Lake. The Government of Alberta approved the transfer of the park to the Town Jan. 17 for a dollar. Included in the transfer is a one-time funding allocation of $1.96 million from the Province to the Town to be used for park improvements and ongoing upkeep. Mayor Sean McIntyre is thankful for the support from the province and is looking forward to the Sustainable Waterfront Area Redevelopment Plan being fully implemented. “We are grateful for the provincial support of our efforts to increase access to Sylvan Lake, create opportunities to manage park visitor experience, and to contribute to our ongoing efforts to strengthen our local economy,” he said. Long anticipated, the transfer will allow for the redevelopment plan to be fully implemented. The plan aims to bring more tourists into the community and encourage business growth. Now that the property has been transferred, the Town will be able to promote, license and manage waterfront business activity and also authorize and manage large special events. “We’re anticipating a complete, integrated plan for the entire waterfront area, with the goal of ensuring quality public access to the lakefront,” said McIntyre. Over the years since Sylvan Lake was established as a provincial park in 1932, the Town has attracted tourists interested in enjoying the lake and about 72 businesses in town with products and services

catering to tourism. The average number of visitors to the Town between July and August every year is 761,223, with an economic impact of almost $75 million each year. With the shared management of different parts of the waterfront property, it has been challenging to balance between two different standards. The Minister of Environment and Parks, Shannon Phillips said the transfer will allow for the Town to “fully explore the economic benefits” tourism can bring. “Albertans love Sylvan Lake Provincial Park. This transfer will ensure the park remains available to the hundreds of thousands of visitors who flock there every year,” she said in a press release. Since its initial designation as provincial park, the park has been passed back and forth between the Town and the Province two times with the park being transferred to the Town early in the 1960’s and then back to the province in 1980. As part of the terms in the transfer the land is only to be used for public recreation and will not be used for commercial or residential development.

Sylvan Lake A hockey town
The Sylvan Lake Hockey Camp is where minor hockey players learn the fundamental skills according to their age at the NexSource Centre.
The Sylvan Lake Hockey Camp (SLHC) returns once again in its new home at the NexSource Centre. Following the collapse of the Sylvan Lake Arena - original home of the camp for 40 years, in January, 2014, plans for a new facility were accelerated and the hockey camp was homeless. Three years, two months and 11 days later the doors to the Town of Sylvan Lake’s new NexSource Center opened and a new era for the camp began. Skating on the new ice surface, precisely located where the original surface was, is only one component of the facility that will now allow the camp the flexibility to do all activities under one roof. Ample dry floor, complete with a running track for off ice training, state of the art classroom space, day meal and dormitory facilities and an indoor pool are the major assets for the program. Ideally, the Camp is still located one block from the Lakefront and weather permitting, as has been the history, most afternoon activities will still take advantage of those outdoor training amenities. Hard work in camp is balanced with some well deserved beach time or time at

the new Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash Park! The new facilities are fantastic but the overall training program has to match, or exceed certain levels. This year the SLHC is proud to be the first hockey school to receive a Hockey Alberta ‘Alternate Season Program Sanction’. This is the result of a four year commitment the Camp made
to Hockey Alberta to deliver off season training in accordance with Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta’s ‘Long Term Player Development’ (LTPD) initiative. This program assures that all attendees are getting the latest in ‘age and skill appropriate’ training, both on and off the ice. Opening in 1975, the Camp has served well over 50,000 students
from all parts of the globe. Over 900 participants, between the ages of 5 - 17 years, attend one or more of six weekly sessions, during the summer. now open and upgraded Jarvis Bay Provincial Park has been closed since early September of 2017 for campground redevelopment but will be open and fully operational on the May long weekend (May 19, 20, 21). Included in the redevelopment are upgrades to the sewer and power infrastructure. The campground check-in booth and existing campsites in the south loops have been modernized and expanded. The government spent $2 million on the upgrades to the campground’s south loops. The modernization includes expanded and power campsites, four new washrooms, a new sewage dump station and an entrance booth. A complete overhaul of the north camping loop and group sites is proposed for fall 2018. This includes adding modern toilet and shower house amenities, as well as three barrier-free campsites adjacent to new washroom and shower facilities. The north loop will also add seven new campsites, increasing camping capacity in this loop from 29 to 36 sites. The project is part of Alberta Parks commitment to providing quality recreational opportunities by modernizing and improving recreational facilities in protected areas. The project is being rolled out in phases to provide minimal disruption to visitors. The public will be consulted in 2018 to gather input into latter phases of the project, which will include a proposed expansion with new camping loops.

Featuring an array of terrific talent, the highly-anticipated Jazz at the Lake Festival is returning for its 16th year, running from Aug. 17-19 at various venues around town. Organizers took a couple of years to stage a concert series as a bit of a hiatus, but the time was right to bring last year to bring the popular event back - and this year promises to be another superb experience for jazz lovers. “We just felt we needed to take a
break,” explained Eric Allison, one of the Festival’s founders. His wife, Cheryl Fisher, a jazz performer herself, came up with the idea to launch the event back in the early 2000s. Allison recalls Fisher coming up with the idea for the Festival, and then the time he teamed up with her, Al Fisher and Matt Toonders to further detail how to bring it together and hatch a plan to launch that very first event.

Camp Kuriakos offers plenty for the entire family
One of the most well-rounded Central Alberta summer camp choices would have to be at Camp Kuriakos, located on the scenic shores of Sylvan Lake. “We try to do two new summer programs and two new winter or retreat programs each year,” explained Assistant Director Paul Kopjar. “It’s all part of figuring out what people want and testing out new things as well.” Summer programs run the gamut from Kids I (July 4-6; ages 6 - 9) and Kids II (July 22-27; ages 8 - 11) to Kids III Aug. 6-10; ages 8-11. Junior Youth Camp runs July 8-13 for ages 12 - 14; Senior Youth Camp runs Aug. 19-24 for ages 14 - 18 and there are also Adventure Weeks for various age groups as well. These involve small groups experiencing life outdoors, honing their adventure skills by learning ‘Leave No
Trace’ principles, practising outdoor cooking skills and further developing canoeing abilities - which in itself is a key part of the experience. Kopjar said Adventure Weeks have proven to be an enormous hit, adding that last year’s version was full by the end of March. “It was fantastic,” he said, adding that the extensive canoeing in the Adventure Week is indeed a highlight. And it’s something not every kid gets to experience growing up. “It’s so good for kids - if they get to try that now, they’re lucky! “ “Adventure Week campers also loved the freedom of having the smaller groups,” he said. “It’s just your group - you can pick what you are going to do as a group. You aren’t following a schedule that 80 other kids might be following,” he said. Another option this season is

All camp sites are within reasonable distance from the Town centre and the main attraction of the lake. Sunny Siesta Camp Ground is a family owned and operated business located on 50 Street, conveniently across from pristine golfing at Meadowlands Golf Club. The campground offers an RV campground, tenting and cabins which are said to be equipped with all the latest amenities. Sunny Siesta Camp Ground has been operating at the edge of Sylvan Lake for many years, and is a popular spot for campers. Jarvis Bay campground includes many amenities, such as: handicap spots, play grounds, picnic shelters, showers, water, fire wood, picnic tables and sani dump. Jarvis Bay does not offer access to the lake due to the shore cliff, however there is a small boat launch for canoes and kayaks.

A historical celebration of Sylvan Lake The weekend all Sylvan Lake residents look forward to is returning June 15-17, when the Town will host its annual historical celebration: 1913 Days. The event welcomes residents and visitors to visit multiple attractions throughout Town which are focused on the history of Sylvan Lake. This year offers some new and returning activities, according to Town of Sylvan Lake Special Events Coordinator Michelle Houle. Many of the events and details are still in the planning stages, but Town staff promises a huge party for this year’s festivities. The Town of Sylvan Lake is also looking to tie in Canada’s history during the annual 1913 Days Parade. Events to look forward to at 1913 Days include a street fes-
tival, held on June 15, the 1913 Days parade, held on June 16 and a drive-in movie also held on June 16. “We are hoping to see some really cool floats tailored to those themes,” said Houle. The theme for this year’s parade is “Best of the 80’s”. “It is always a really fun weekend - hopefully the weather is nice because that always plays into it,” Houle said, the 2017 parade was cancelled due to rain. “We are really looking forward to an awesome event and we have a lot of great things planned.” Houle believes that 1913 Days is a great way for residents to celebrate Sylvan Lake together with visitors. “It is important to celebrate our community because we live in an

amazing community,” she said. “We really want to celebrate being part of it, and where we came from and where we are now. Farmers Market showcases variety of makers and growers
A summer staple in Sylvan Lake is the farmer’s market, a weekly Friday night event on the waterfront, close to the lighthouse. The market is a popular place for people to buy fresh produce and locally made food and crafts. Starting in mid-May, the market runs every Friday evening from 4 - 7:30 p.m until the end of August. Crystal Loewen, organizer for the market, has been responsible for the market running smoothly for the last 14 years. From figuring out where to place vendors to finding the current location, she enjoys the process of bringing local growers and makers together in this community. The market moved to the waterfront last summer and Loewen says the old water park location gives the market more space than before. Besides the usual variety of vendors with everything from spring rolls, jam and bison jerky to beautiful handmade wood furniture, jewellery and soaps, Loewen says there’s a dixieland jazz band that also comes to play at the market. “They’re always wonderful to listen to and people really enjoy them,” said Loewen, adding that they’ve had people dancing to the quartet in the past. Depending on the weekend and the weather, Loewen says the market averages between 60 - 70 vendors per week between July and August. “As we are an outdoor market that affects some crafts…if the weather isn’t good it can make it a little harder,” she said, adding that if a vendor doesn’t have a tent or has a product that is sensitive to the weather such as paintings or paper products that could blow away in the wind, they will likely not attend the event. Loewen refers to the vendors as “family” and appreciates the teamwork that goes into running the market together. “My vendors are wonderful, they all get along with each other,” she said, adding they all help each other out especially if there is a change in weather where they need to tear down tents quickly and get product put away safely. Eighty per cent of the vendors are required to have products they’ve grown or made themselves and only 20 per cent can be commercial vendors like multi-level marketing companies. “It’s all based on how many vendors we have make, bake and grow their product themselves here in Alberta,” said Loewen, adding since the markets are governed by the provincial government, vendors who come through from other provinces are legally added into the commercial bracket even if they’ve grown or made their own products. Loewen says it’s a fine balancing act to ensure there are a variety of vendors and products and each is provided with the best opportunity for competition while still able to do well. For some vendor sections such as vegetable producers, Loewen does not have any more availability. The Sylvan Lake Sailing Club hosted a race last summer to garner interest as sailing season came into full swing.
Club gauges community
interest by inviting newcomers onto the water Several boats and crews of local - and prospective - sailors took to the waters of Sylvan Lake last summer in an effort to attract new members to the Sylvan Lake Sailing Club. Ten boats full of seasoned and new sailors spent the afternoon on the lake. The sailing race was open to anyone interested in finding out what the club is all about, with several guests from the Sylvan Lake area trying their hand at sailing. Commodore Bill Young said he found the race to be a wonderful experience overall, adding he enjoyed the sunshine and levels of participation. The wind slowed down after in the afternoon limiting sailors at the end of the race to one lap. “That’s sailing for you,� said Young. “You have to be aware of the weather - you have to have an eye to the horizon to see what’s coming.� Throughout the sailing season the group hosts several race days - regattas - everything from
a one day event like the Commodore’s Cup to a three-day event where other sailing clubs around Alberta join in. Besides the Commodore’s Cup there two other main regattas during the season, the Memorial Cup and the End of Summer Hummer. Young said the purpose of the race was to let the community know the club is always welcoming new members. Fleet Captain Don Ulsifer said it was difficult to keep track of how many times the fickle winds shifted and contributed to many changes in the race standings Norma Turner, skipper of L’eau Rider - the first place vessel in last summer’s race - said the varied winds were a good way to challenge participants and help newcomers realize it’s a combination of luck and skill that wins sailing races. Young emphasized such events are held pri-
marily to gauge interest in the club, to show people how there is a strong social aspect to the club, and that they are “not just about the competition.â€? “The purpose of these events is to bring people interested in sailing together.â€? Young said it’s “quite commonâ€? for people to share boat ownership and there are many different ways people can get involved with the club. He said companionship, collaboration and teamwork are all critical to a good day on the lake. While the club does not have a formal training program, Young says there are many opportunities to learn from other more experienced members of the group. The show and shine gives car enthusiasts the chance to take about their passion with cars surrounding them.
Sylvan Lake Custom and Classic Show and Shine took place on July 8, 2017 with an outstanding turnout of participants and spectators. One participant added a little personality to his presentation by adding props.
Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics club holds annual show and shine
The Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics Club will be hosting their 12th show this year at the Meadowlands Golf Club. Originally Gord Bredo took over the club from the local Chamber of Commerce and he his wife Elaine Bredo helped run the club as pres-

ident and secretary up until last year. The couple decided to move on and a new executive has taken over with Val Hilker as the president. “The reason for the club was to get like-minded people together,” Hilker said, adding that the club members have a lot of fun together sharing knowledge and learning how to take care of their vehicles. Hilker feels that as long as the club sticks to what’s worked so far, the show and shines will continue to be a success. “As long as we follow that model that [Gord Bredo] did for the last 11 years, we’ll be good,” said Hilker. The show attracts between 150 - 200 vehicles every year according to Hilker. Cars come from mostly Central Alberta but some come from as far away as Medicine Hat and Invermere, B.C. There is a little bit of everything going on at the show, taking place once again at the Meadowlands Golf Club. Staples every year are face painting for the kids, a silent auction and beer gardens put on by Meadowlands. Hilker says there will even be a professional DJ on site to keep everyone entertained all day. There will also be food on hand thanks to the partnership of the Knights of Columbus who will be cooking breakfast and lunch at the event. The event has changed and evolved over the last 12 years. One big difference is the size of the event and the location. Since its inception, the Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics have moved the show and shine to various locations around town. A couple years ago they set up shop at Meadowland and used the driving range for the day. Since Meadowland will be building houses around the golf course in the near future, the group will be on the lookout once again for a new location for their event in coming years. This year the Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics Show and Shine will be held every second Saturday in July starting on July 14 Meadowlands Gold Club from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free to spectators. Anyone looking to participate in the show and display their car can do so by signing up bright and early on the day of the event. Hilker says some cars come in as early as 7 a.m. The club will happily allow any car to participate as long as it is clean and loved. Participation in the show is $15. Everyone that comes with a car gets five votes to decide who wins the 10 trophies for the top 10 cars. Sylvan Lake Cruz Night growing each year
For Sylvan Lake car enthusiasts there are a few options to pursue when looking to check out some of the hottest cars in the area. One of those options is the Sylvan Lake Cruz Night, presented by Adrenaline Motors and 100.7 Cruz FM. Sylvan Lake Cruz Night began in
2015, and has gained traction since then. The events are held in the No Frills parking lot every Wednesday night, starting at 6 p.m. Tyson Czuy of Adrenaline Motors founded the Cruz Night as a way to share his passion and drive for stellar vehicles with the Sylvan Lake community.
“I’m a huge car enthusiast myself, and I wanted people in Sylvan Lake to be able to have a car show right here in our own backyards, instead of having to drive out to Red Deer,” Czuy said. “Adrenaline specializes in sports cars and unique vehicles, so I felt the Cruz Night was a natural thing for me to take on.” Being born and raised into a family businesses of car dealerships, Czuy has had a few years to grow his love of automotives. He said the Cruz night is a way to share that within the community, and to take time to check out other cool vehicles in the area with other car enthusiasts. “When I was growing up, I was always in the showroom checking out the nicest, newest cars. Then I began working with them, and helping out to grow the business. Some say I just have fuel in my blood,” he said with a laugh. Czuy said that they will see anywhere from 20-30 vehicles on a slow night, and upwards of 50 vehicles on other event nights. He added that Cruz Night will continue to run each Wednesday through
the summer, so people have a few options to plan as to when they can check it out. “We invite anyone and everyone who has a passion for vehicles to join us. We just want people to come and hang out and enjoy it,” he said. Local businesses often donate door prizes for the drivers, so that when they cruise into the lot, they are given tickets to be entered into draws. The crew of 100.7 Cruz FM is on scene each week, pumping music and entertaining the crowd as part of the event. Sylvan Lake Cruz Night does have a Facebook page of the same name, and videos and photos are posted regularly through Instagram and Snapchat, under the username @ AdrenalineMotors. Czuy said social media is often the best way to keep up to date on events and special features. “I just love nice cars - I’m an enthusiast, it’s my business and it’s my passion,” he said, adding his goal is to simply share this passion with others in the community and that he hopes to see support for the events grow this year.

Throughout the year, NexSource Centre offers a wide range of classes. A preview day was held last year to give residents an overview of what to expect for recreation, culture classes and events at the brand new NexSource Centre. Sample classes were held throughout the centre with a wide variety of offerings. From Candle-Lit Flow Yoga with instructors Jessica Bowman and Melissa Konjolka to Regalia Beadworking with Marrisa Moccasin and her son Leland Mitsuign, Sylvan residents had the opportunity to experience a taste of what to expect before registering for programs offered. In one of the party rooms, Marrisa Moccasin, her son Leland Mitsuign and Rachel Rush were all finishing up their beading projects for the Regalia Beadworking class. Other arts and culture classes and events during the fall season will include painting, knitting and crocheting, drama, cooking, and hair and makeup classes. Bowman and Konjolka posed in crow, full wheel, headstand and several other poses, showing what classes would help students work towards. Bowman will be teaching Candlelit Flow and Power Flow with Konjolka subbing for classes when Bowman is taking care of mothers through her Ahimsa Doula Services. Konjolka also instructs yoga at Breeze Yoga in Sylvan Lake and at Peace in a Pod yoga studio in Eckville. There is something for everyone and all ages at the centre. Children can attend dance, skateboarding and skating programs. Adult fitness programs include Beginners Barre, Zumba, POUND Fitness which uses lightly weighted drumsticks and Strollercize.
Pool offerings include Red Cross swim lessons, private swim lessons, deep and shallow water fitness programs and Aquafitness classes. The centre also offers child minding services for parents coming in to use the facility. Wendy-Jo Sakofsky was taking care of customers in The Viewpoint, the lounge which offers a bird’s eye view of both the curling rink and one of the hockey arenas. “The T.V.s are all connected to both the curling rink and arena so people can see and hear what’s going on,” she said. The Viewpoint has beer from local Red Deer brewery, The Troubled Monk, on tap. The curling rink is used for drop in pickleball in early September, but by the end of October the floor is covered with ice for the season. The centre offers corporate purchasing, advertising and sponsorship, party packages and wedding packages.

Sylvan reveals community connections
The 2017 Yuletide Festival brought out a grand total of 5,484 people to NexSource Centre, up from a previous high of 4,000. Attendees were treated to performances by Sylvan’s own Ainsley Elisa, as well as C.P. Blakely, Steffie Woima and the Sylvan Lake Massed Choirs. Live musical contributions continued in the marketplace with a guest appearance from up and coming country singer Alecia Aichelle and performances by the Friends of Music, House of Music and Jazz Explosion. NexSource had close to 70 vendors at the market for people to get their holiday shopping done, free public skating, a Kidz Zone with a bouncy castle, a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus, gingerbread decorating and a gingerbread house contest. Teams were provided with gingerbread houses already constructed so all the teams had to do was add icing and candy and personalized items if desired. The winner was “Christmas in the Woods� with second place going to “Team DQ� and third place going to “St. Nixon.� The evolution of Spirit of Sylvan Coun. Jas Payne was volunteering at the raffle table and shared how he became involved with Yuletide around its third year right after Kraft Hockeyville. He talked about the evolution of the connections that have contributed to the growth of the event and how many of the people involved with making Hockeyville a success were also key figures in organizing the first Yuletide festivals Coun. Graham Parsons, long-time Sylvan resident, and one of the original organizers for the event was in charge of marketing and sponsors this year. Of Parsons, Coun. Jas Payne said, “[He] didn’t really let me not come on (as part of the group),� Payne said with a laugh. “I was kind of volun-told. Since then, year by year, it’s grown and as things have changed, like with the NexSource Centre, it’s become a bigger festival.� As the festival has developed and added partners, the town has become a bigger supporter of the festival over the years. “A lot of people think the Yuletide festival is a town festival but they don’t realize that the folks that organize this are here as volunteers, not because we’re attached to other places,� Payne stated. Payne suggested the kind of people who want to get involved with the town tend to be the kind of people who want to volunteer in other places as well. Payne spoke warmly of the town, sharing what he feels is the central point of the festival. “Bringing the whole community together to kick off the Christmas season really is the purpose. It’s why we do it,� he said.

Michelle Houle, special events coordinator for the town considered the 2017 Light up the Lake event “bigger and better than ever before.” New to the celebration were holiday sleigh (wagon) rides organized by Snake Lake Brewing Company and the kick off to the Waterfront Winter Village, which lit up after the fireworks. In conjunction with the events organized by the Town, the Spirit of Sylvan Yuletide Festival was able to expand into the NexSource Centre. All of the events had record numbers in attendance. Breakfast with Santa was sold out and the parade route and fireworks were packed with spectators. Houle shared her gratitude for everyone who participated throughout the weekend: “We received so many positive comments from everyone who attend the Light up the Lake celebrations this weekend and we would like to thank everyone who came out to all of the festivities. This was a fantastic holiday weekend in Sylvan Lake!”

a dull moment, even in winter Winter is when the town’s true spirit comes alive. Winter in Sylvan Lake is the perfect place to be, no matter what day of the week. There are a variety of fun activities to do in town - from walking along Lakeshore Drive and seeing ice fishing huts out on the lake, to skating with your family on the lake. Events are planned in the winter time such as Winterfest, the Santa Claus Parade and various other events. Around 6,000 individuals took part in last year’s Winterfest activities. A new addition to the wintertime festivities is the Winter Village at the pier. The trees and shrubbery are strung with lights throughout the pier on Lakeshore Drive. Each year the village gets bigger and brighter as more trees are decorated for the winter season. Parking never seems to be an
issue when it comes to activities on the lake in the winter; with many people parking right on the lake, where there is never any worry of where to find a spot. Parking on the lake makes it that much more convenient when strapping on a pair of ice skates, and heading out onto the ice, since your vehicle is never too far away. Fireworks often grace the end of each event happening in town. Fireworks are enjoyed by the whole community and light up the night sky, but are also reflected on the ice. Children skate about in the green, yellow and white colours painted temporarily on the ice by the fireworks offering a picturesque scene. Ice fishing is an all-time favourite for locals and visitors of the town. People often set up shacks and tents or just bring out buckets to
collect their fish. Ice fishing is a great activity to do with the whole family as well. Places to eat are never too far away when enjoying activities out on the lake. Lakeshore Drive is lined with all different types of restaurants, giving everyone options as to the food they may want to eat while they warm up. There is never a dull moment in the winter in Sylvan Lake. There are always fun activities going on with the frozen lake being constantly utilized for a variety of different fun things to do. Trees and shrubbery at the pier in the Sylvan Lake Municipal Park are strung with lights during the winter months to create the Winter Village. Special events are often scheduled in the Village, and on weekends you can warm up by the fire, maybe with a cup of hot chocolate.

Sylvan Lake Paintball is the longest running paintball course in Central Alberta. They offer a range of affordable packages as well as a full service outdoor paintball facility. Sylvan Lake celebrated Canada’s sesquicentennial - that being it’s 150th - birthday on July 1. The event was bigger than ever as the Town of Sylvan Lake partnered with the Rotary Club to bring events and activities starting at 10 a.m. and finishing with fireworks at 11 p.m. The event boasted; live music, kids activities, flag raising, the March of Canadians and even some birthday cake. The day of events, which was momentarily stalled as a thunderstorm rolled through, was ended by a fireworks display over the lake as many people crowded the lakeshore and pier to watch the spectacle.
Face painting was a very popular stop for children and adults. The lines were often seen going down the street.
A large cake in the form of the Canadian flag was found at the end of the March of Canadians. Many people eagerly surrounded the cake, waiting for their piece.

Starting at the municipal government building and ending at the pier, the March of Canadian drew the attention of many people. The march encouraged everyone to participate.

The first fireworks show of the year takes place on New Year’s Eve. Thousands flock to the water’s edge, some parking in vehicles on the lake and tuning their radios into 88.5 FM to hear the music all of the majestic shows are choreographed to. Others prefer the thundering sounds of the explosions overhead and choose to skate on the lake next to the Christmas tree. The Town of Sylvan Lake also holds a spectacular Christmas showing in December during the festive season. Fireworks come again in February for Winterfest following a fun-filled family weekend. Various shows can be caught throughout the summer months, including the annual highly attended Canada Day fireworks. The Town has become well known for the fireworks shows with nearly every show’s grand finale blasts leaving onlookers cheering with their hands raised. Launched off the pier in downtown Sylvan Lake, the best place to watch the show from is typically anywhere along Lakeshore Drive. Find an early seat at a rooftop patio in the summer months for the perfect place to watch the show. Winter months mean you may need to bundle up a bit more while watching the show, but with the music timed perfectly to the booms overhead - a parked vehicle can often be the best place to watch. When the lake freezes in the winter, the Town creates two skating rinks on the lake in addition to a large parking lot where many park to watch the winter shows. “Like” the Town of Sylvan Lake on Facebook or follow them on Twitter for frequent updates on fireworks shows. Be sure to mark your calendars for the shows such as Canada Day, Christmas and New Year’s Eve to make sure you don’t miss a moment of the fun.

A 7 Step Plan for getting ďŹ t in spite of fear
What does fear have to do with fitness? Based on all the people I have met over the past 20 years, plenty it turns out. What fears would those be? To name the ones off the top of my head: Fear of failing, fear that everyone will judge you at the gym, fear that an exercise program will mean being in pain all the time, fear that you will have to eat the worst meal plan imaginable, fear that you will not succeed at the goal you had in mind, fear that your friends and family will not support you, and I could go on and on. Confronting your fears is one of the most powerful things you could every do for your life. We all know that the best life possible begins outside of your comfort zone, so what stops us from chasing our dreams? We set a goal, intentions and plans for how to get there to that fitter, healthier, happier version of ourselves. But then something happens‌ FEAR gets in the way and stops people cold for many of the reasons I stated. Now what?Over Respond. Instead of trying to do some small, minor thing that is easy to quit on, do something BOLD! GO FOR IT! Join a committed program that has all the features you need to succeed, commit 100 per cent, all in! Everything changes when you take a big, bold step that feels exciting or massive to you! Find your own compelling reason WHY. Imagine if you do not take this step and take care of your health? Imagine if you keep getting heavier and heavier as you age and all the things you can do now start to fade. Picture yourself fit, healthy and strong – your best version of yourself, and all the great things you could choose to do on a whim. Ski, run, bike, climb, etc. Focus on the Next Step. What is the next thing you must do to move forward? Do that. Do that as soon as you can. Movement creates momentum, which creates and maintains motivation. There is strength in numbers. Have a good friend join you, or join a class, or a group that is getting fit. Surround yourself in people doing the same thing. Now all of the discussions you have are keeping you

Once you set everything in place, you need to just spring into action and get moving. No more thinking, just go for it! There is a time to plan, consider, weigh options and there is a time for action. Get moving. Ask for help! You are not the first person to get in shape, honestly. Millions have gone before you, and people like me have dedicated their lives to this pursuit of health. I have been at it for over two decades. Find someone who is an expert in the area of fitness and health that you want to explore and get help. The secret is this: Fear gets smaller as you move towards it. The longer you sit and think about it, the more fear grows. Fear is ‘anticipation of pain or failure’ and sitting still will just let your imagination create scenarios that are more than likely total hogwash. I have a great book I like to read, it is full of short stories of ordinary people accomplishing amazing things, it is called “Unstoppable� by Cynthia Kersey. I read it when life is particularly difficult and all my problems start to have me forget what my dreams are. The Sylvan Lake Rotary Club provided horse-drawn sleigh rides to festival goers at Winterfest. The ride around the lake was by donation, and had many families lined up.

The annual Winterfest celebration is always one that Sylvan Lakers look forward to, and next year’s event will be no exception. Sylvan Lake Winterfest is held every year on Family Day weekend, with the 2019 event happening Feb. 15-18. Events are held across the Town and include a variety of family-friendly activities.
“Winterfest is an outdoor winter festival. It’s very community-oriented and community-run. Different groups also host events throughout the weekend as well as the Town organizes a few of the events,” said Michelle Houle, special events coordinator for Sylvan Lake Winterfest. “The purpose is to get people outside and get them active. It’s something fun in the middle of winter.” The popular Polar Bear Dip will take place on Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. This event includes Sylvan Lake’s bravest taking the plunge into frigid waters, all for a good cause, as money raised from the event goes to charity. Other events include family-friendly activities on the lake such as sleigh rides, skating, sledding and bonfires with s’mores. A fireworks show also takes place Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. Community groups also sponsor a number of activities including hot chocolate and coffee as well as more interactive exhibits such as the life-sized snow globe bouncy castle. “It’s a time to have fun with your family and friends.” Houle said in recent years with the weather being just right come the event, there have been thousands who take part in the festivities. “There have been a lot of people down at the lake. It has been awesome.”

Polar Dip Jumpers brave icy water for charity
More than $16,000 was raised by brave individuals taking an icy plunge this year. The annual Polar Dip fundraising event is held during the Winterfest weekend every year in Sylvan Lake. This year’s event had 45 people signed up to take the leap, but only 38 jumpers showed up. Generally, a large number of the jumpers who sign up each year are repeat jumpers. Houle called the repeat jumpers “very dedicated.� Normally, the Polar Dip will bring in between $12,000 and $20,000 for local charities. The jumpers came out to support a wide variety of local charities. From the humane society, to the food bank or the Ronald McDonald House to YouthWrite. Other top fundraisers from the Polar Dip this year include: Trent Petrich, $1,415 or the Sylvan Lake Food Bank and Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta; Darian Lueken, $750.00 for KCS Association and Mandy Maltais, Brad Long and Doug Strongman, $1,235.00 for the Central Alberta Humane Society. Corrie Brown and Sian Grant were able to raise enough money to send a local youth to a writing camp called YouthWrite. According to Houle, the charities which received the largest donations are: Central Alberta Humane Society, $4,636; Sylvan Lake Bethany Care Society, $2,535; Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta, $1,872.50 and Sylvan Lake & Area Pet Shelter Society, $1,695. “It was awesome, just a lot of fun,� Houle said, adding, “The atmosphere was great and the jumpers all had a lot of fun.� This year the event was sponsored by Snake Lake Brewing, and provided shirts for all the jumpers. Houle said it was “great to have a sponsorship� this year. The Sylvan Lake Fire Department also took part in the event, ensuring the jumpers were safe during the process. Before jumping in, one participant motioned to the two firefighters in dry suits situated in the water and said, “You have some real gonads.� “We were really excited to have the fire department out again to help us. They make sure everyone is safe and sound during the jumps.� Houle also wanted to thank the jumpers who participated, saying the event couldn’t happen without them, and to everyone who attended even though the weather was a little on the cold side.
