Welcome to the beautiful, diverse rural landscape of the Shuswap — North Okanagan. Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of nature as you explore more than 1,800 kilometres of quiet, paved back roads in the area highlighted by Shuswap Tourism’s road bike (or hybrid bike/slick tire mountain bike) local cycle touring guide. It’s yours to discover for a day, for a week or for a lifetime. More than 35 out-and-back and loop cycling routes are identified, with an average distance of about 50 kilometres. Choose from easy, moderate or challenging routes, varying in distance from short 20km trips to long 100km adventures. Visitor information centres, parking spots, cyclist’s eateries, wineries, bird watching “hot spots,” swimming beaches, viewpoints and hill climb locations are among the features and services identified to help you to plan your cycle tour. The communities of Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Chase, Sorrento, Enderby, Armstrong and Falkland offer a variety of services for the touring cyclist. Bike repair shops are located in Salmon Arm: Skookum Cycle & Ski and Sport Chek in the Mall at Piccadilly and in Vernon. Most routes are ready to ride by mid-March if you dress accordingly. Cycling may extend to early November in some years. Traffic volume on some back roads may increase slightly during July and August. Local drivers are courteous to cyclists. SNOWMOBILING

The Shuswap is home to seven excellent sledding areas — Blue Lake Mountain, Crowfoot Mountain, Eagle Pass, Fly Hills, Owlhead Mountain, Queest Mountain and Spa Hills, operated by a total of five snowmobile clubs — The Crowfoot Mountain Snowmobile Club, Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club, Hunters Range Snowmobile Club, Salmon Arm Snowblazers and Spa Hills. Many trails are groomed, providing a smooth ride to the alpine. Sledding season runs from November to May and offers areas that are fun for families and others that challenge the most experienced and thrill-seeking sledders. Dayuse chalets are available in six of the areas. Caution: Sledding can be dangerous and mountain weather treacherous. Check with experienced local riders regarding snow and weather conditions, routes and potential hazards. If in doubt, or weather conditions are variable, stay on well-used trails and riding areas. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING & SNOWSHOEING

Larch Hills, 20 km south of Salmon Arm on Highway 97B, is home to some of B.C.’s finest cross-country skiing. With 150 km of trails, including 50km of groomed trails, and 16km of snow shoe trails, there is no shortage of variety for the outdoor enthusiast. The Larch Hills Nordic Society maintains a chalet next to the parking lot, Cec’s Cabin about six km up Larch Hills Road and Tom’s Shelter, which is about four km up Woodlot Ramble. They also maintain all the tracksetting equipment and

safety toboggans.There are no trail fees but donations are encouraged to help with expenses.Visitors to the area can rent snowshoes at Skookum Cycle and Ski on Shuswap Street in Salmon Arm. Skmana X–C Ski & Snowshoe Club grooms 18 km of trails ranging from beginner to advanced some 14 km north of Chase. An easy 4.5 km trail circles both Skmana lakes. Intermediate and advanced trails wind through forest and meadows above the lakes on old logging roads. Skmana now has several snowshoe-specific trails. Identify them by the orange snowshoe markers. Many snowshoers throughout the Shuswap just head for the nearest forestry road, field or lake to ramble about for a healthy and fun adventure on the snow.

• In Sicamous, Music in the Park outdoor concerts are held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Monday at Sicamous Beach Park from July 9 to Aug. 20. This popular live music series is sponsored by the Sicamous and District Chamber of Commerce.

SALMON ARM ART GALLERY

The gallery presents contemporary exhibitions in the historic building on the corner of Hudson Avenue and McLeod Street. From April 21 to May 26, the gallery presents “Fold and Unfold,” drawings and paintings by Amy Modahl; from June 2 to Aug. 4, the gallery offers “Slxlxaya: Stories of the Secwepemc People,” a visual and audio exhibition featuring Aboriginal artists telling stories and legends in new ways; from Aug. 11 to Sept. 8, artist and talented musician Herald Nix presents an exhibition of oil-on-board landscapes titled “Scenery,” and from Sept. 15 to Nov. 10, a group of eight Shuswap artists explores the effects of climate change on the salmon ecosystem in “Peak Year III.” Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is by donation. DEMILLE’S FARM MARKET

SOUTH SHUSWAP CANADA DAY

Start Canada Day celebrations with a delicious pancake breakfast offered by the Sorrento Lions Club from 8 to 11 a.m. at Centennial Park. Watch the annual festive parade at 10 a.m. at Glenview Drive and ends at the field. It’s always a great parade with horses, hot rods, children and pets, square dancers, line dancers, RCMP, and other surprises! Watch for road closure reports. Take a lawn chair to relax and enjoy the rest of the day. Opening ceremonies with dignitaries will be followed by children’s games, live entertainment including a Cod Gone Wild finale, old-fashioned games, bouncy castles, craft vendors and food vendors, displays and a beer garden. Canada Day cake is served at noon. As always, the celebration ends with an awesome fireworks display.

EQUESTRIAN CAMPING

A campsite at picturesque Skimikin Lake offers quiet and secluded space for people and their horses. It features spacious campsites at picturesque Skimikin Lake.At the entrance is ample parking for day users to hike, bike or ride. Campsites include picnic tables and fire pits.There are 20 + paddocks for equine use with double corrals and a number of pull-through parking spaces. Many tall trees make high lining an easy option. A site operator collects a small fee and sells maps. Due to regulations, reservations are not allowed. There are approximately 100 kilometres of trails for short and long rides, some with spectacular views. There is a geo-referenced trail map on the EQ web site that can be used with the free Avenza app. This allows users to see where they are on the trail system. A new short trail around the lake is perfect for a casual evening stroll. The lake is popular for fishing.

Village of Chase

An excellent base from which to explore the Shuswap, Chase offers a variety of stores, restaurants, coffee shops and accommodation options. There is a beautiful public beach, pier, picnic tables, washrooms and the Joyce Dunn theatre bandshell. The area offers many opportunities for hiking and exploring from a short walk to a waterfall to multi-day hikes.The Chase village walk is a journey back in time through the colourful history of the community. Close by is Chase Creek Falls, which provides an easy 15-minute round trip walk from the Trans–Canada Highway to the falls. There is also the possibility of seeing big horn sheep on the slopes above.

The historic Scatchard Mountain switchback trail climbs to viewpoints overlooking the Chase Creek canyon, the village and Little Shuswap Lake, and further on to the Chase Creek Road. An interpretive pamphlet, written by local historian David Lepsoe, is available at the museum and the ChaseVisitor Centre. The Adams Lake Indian Band Meadows provide an easy hike that is especially attractive in early spring with floral displays along a rolling grassland bench above the mouth of the South Thompson River. The meadows are within Adams Lake First Nations lands and access is regulated by permit available at the band office at 250-679-8841.

INDIGENOUS DAY

Celebrate First Nations culture at Quaaout Lodge on national Indigenous Day, Thursday, June 21.The event will be a fun-filled day with different stations featuring cultural and recreational activities — canoe rides, flint knapping, drum-making workshops, archery, storytelling in the winter home and in the outdoor theatre and face-painting.A blessing will be performed on the traditional canoes. Meet birds of prey, courtesy of the British Columbia Wildlife Park in Kamloops.Traditional food will be served by the Quaaout Lodge chef using local ingredients.The celebration begins at 10 a.m. The Arts Council for the South Shuswap has collaborated with the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band and Quaaout Lodge to assist with June 21 Indigenous Day celebrations and received a grant to bring music programming to the event with DJ Shub as the main feature. Mihi Rangay a Maori dancer and musician will also be performing and a further Indigenous acoustic duo is being sought to round out the entertainment.

WORKING TOGETHER POWWOW

Learn about our First Nations neighbours’ rich cultural heritage at the annual powwow June 30 to July 2 at the arbour at the Neskonlith Indian Band office just west of Chase. Sponsored by the Working Together Powwow Society this celebration features traditional dancing, singing, crafts and food concessions. Enjoy a powwow breakfast Saturday morning and a big feast at 5 p.m. Saturday. The food is free, but food donations are welcome — just drop them off at the kitchen with the head cook. Several vendors offer a variety of traditional native items including blankets, baskets, moccasins, mukluks, ribbon shirts, regalia, jewelry and souvenirs. Chase CornStock on Aug 14 at Chase Memorial Beach showcases local farmers, crafters and food trucks in the CornField Market, and provides a variety of games and activities for youth. The Museum is housed in the historic Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church built by Father LeJeune in 1910.The gift shop features a selection of works by local artists and photographers, as well as publications pertaining to Chase and the surrounding area.The Chase Museum’s summer exhibit will focus on the history of transportation in the area. TURTLE VALLEY DONKEY REFUGE

Nested in the Historical Turtle Valley, the 100 donkey refuge provides a safe and permanent home for abused and neglected donkeys

from all over Western Canada.Visitors are invited to take a picnic, walk through the barns and visit with the 100-plus resident donkeys, walk the trails, and visit the Donkey Shoppe for souvenirs.
