Meet Crystal Crossman 2018 Poster Artist Crystal Crossman is a visually impaired self taught artist from Sackville, New Brunswick Canada. Born in 1976 and raised on the East coast until 1986 when her family then decided to move across the country and found themselves on beautiful Vancouver Island, where for the last 30 years she has called home. Her love of the arts started really when she was about 12 years old, and had always enjoyed doing art as a kid. Her older brother was an isnpiration growing up, as he was quite the artist himself at a young age and encouraged her creative side.

Festival Buttons 2018 Paciﬁc Rim Whale Festival Buttons are bordered by the colour YELLOW to distinguish them from previous years’ and are designed by local Ucluelet and Toﬁno children. There are 12 special designs to choose from; we suggest a minimum donation of $5 each. Buttons are available at most events and can also be found at local Visitor Info Centres and a few local businesses. Wear them proudly in support of the Whale Festival, and to get into all of our “Button“ events Made possible by the talented young artists of our community, and the printing expertise of Pina Studio in Ucluelet, B.C.

At the age of 16, Crystal found the wonder of colored pencils with it’s rich versitaile, vibrant colour. Crystal has mastered this medium for over 25 years now. Crystal loves creating detail as well as contrast and composition are of great importance.

Oil paints are another favorite medium of Crystal’s and treasures them for a whole completely diﬀerent reason, as she feels are the most forgiving and satisfying of all the paints. Through all the years of learning and growing art has taught Crystal to be patient, be at peace, to let go and enjoy every moment fully. Crystal’s belief is that art is very theraputic and can brighten up someone’s day. Crystal feels that if she can share some of that passion even just a little then she has experienced the true essence of being an artist.

The Evolution of Our Coastal Tradition. Our non-profit society began in 1986, with a group of concerned citizens from our region, who wanted to create awareness about our pristine eco-system, the then endangered Grey Whale population and our coastal traditions. Although the Grey Whales’ numbers have increased, the celebration continues! Our festivities each spring are centered around the migration of these great ocean giants, from the Baja Coast in Mexico to the Chukchi Sea in the Artic. Over 25,000 Pacific Grey Whales now swim past our shores each year. We hope you enjoy the journey of the festival as much as we enjoy creating it.

This is a great year for families to explore the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and take advantage of the special programs offered during the Pacific Rim Whale Festival. Parks Canada will be presenting programs at the Kwisitis Visitor Centre and Green Point Campground March 21 to 24 and will be hosting the Closing Ceremonies on March 25th. Check your Calendar of Events for more details.

A National Park Entry Pass is required at Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Daily National Park Entry Passes are available from our automated machines throughout the national park reserve and from the Kwisitis Visitor Centre, Green Point Campground, Pacific Rim Visitor Centre, and Cox Bay Visitor Centre. Check with national park reserve staff to see if an annual pass may be a better option. Youth 17 years and under enjoy free entry to all Parks Canada places.

Throughout the festival the Kwisitis Visitor Centre on Wickaninnish Beach will be open every day from 10a.m. to 5p.m. offering a captivating (and dry!) way to discover the region’s natural and cultural history. And if the winds pick up and send waves crashing against the shoreline, the outside deck at the Kwisitis Visitor Centre is the perfect place to take a front row seat to a wild Pacific storm! Don’t forget to be CoastSmart at CoastSmart.ca!

You might encounter some construction work on ʔapsčiik ašii (pronounced ups-cheek ta-shee), the new multi-use trail being built in the national park reserve. Scheduled to be completed in 2020, this 25km trail will allow you to reach many future Whale Festival events by foot and bicycle! As you are INSPIRED and ENTERTAINED throughout the Pacific Rim Whale Festival, don’t forget to take some time to enjoy the view and explore all the trails and beaches in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

JIM DARLING, PH.D. Jim Darling has led research programs on whales for over 25 years. His primary studies include long-term investigations of behavior and ecology of gray whales in British Columbia and humpback whales throughout the North Paciﬁc. Jim has been executive director of West Coast Whale Research Foundation, a Canadian research and education society, and research director of the Clayoquot Biosphere Project, a Vancouver Island community based organization that promoted ﬁeld research in the temperate rainforest ecosystem. Since 1997, Maui has been the base of his study on the function of the humpback whale song. In 2018

Canada, working with the Paciﬁc Wildlife Foundation, his most recent and ongoing studies are study of the genetics of both the current Vancouver Island gray whale population and through, collaboration with the Tla-o-quiaht, genetics of ancient whales populations through extraction of DNA from bones. He also produces the Vancouver Is west coast humpback whale photo ID catalog now numbering over 600 individual whales. Jim has written numerous scientiﬁc and popular articles and several books on his work., His most recent book “Hawaii’s Humpbacks: Unveiling the Mysteries”, was published in 2009. Dr. Darling has been a staple presenter over the past many years of the festival and will 4

Wendy started her career volunteering for local marine mammal projects in 1995. She went on to study grey whales and sea lions and completed a graduate degree studying seas lions in Barkley Sound. Wendy has been involved in various grey whale, humback and and sea lion research projects with various government organizations, universites and research groups. Her on-going work involves photo identification of grey and humpback whales in Barkley sound to monitor ther abundance, distribution and habitiat use. Wendy will be on board with Subtidal Adventures Mar 24th.

An appropriate caricature of Long Beach Nature Tours guide Silva Johansson could be of a witty cultural and ecological encyclopedia with bounds of energy, a bright rain slicker and a head of curls. And she has her hands in a number of tidepools, if you will. Silva has also made an appearance in living rooms across the county tidepooling for strange and slippery creatures on Long Beach for Canadian Geographic Kids TV. Ask her about her time exploring the B.C. coast aboard the tall ship North Star of Herschel Island. Silva will presenting The Pass of Melfort story at the UCC, Tuesday March 20th.

Barb Beasley is a local biologist and part-time instructor at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre and Quest University. She is the founding director of the Association of Wetland Stewards for Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds, a charitable nonprofit organization aimed at promoting amphibian conservation through research, monitoring and public education on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

LAURA GRIFFITH-COCHRANE Laura (also known as LGC) loves the ocean and everything in it (except polychaete worms). Born and raised on Vancouver Island, she’s made learning about marine ecosystems a life-long adventure. Laura studied biology and oceanography at the University of Victoria and is currently the cura-tor of the Ucluelet Aquarium – Canada’s first Catch-andRelease aquarium. Through diving, snorkeling, surfing and foraging, Laura is constantly on the hunt for new ways to experience the ocean and connect. Laura is one of our guest panelist for the SeaChange panel discussion on global warming and its effect on our oceans.

Lauren McWhinnie holds a PhD from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, where her work focused on developing GIS-based tools to aid Marine Spatial Planning and Decision Making. She is currently a research fellow in the Coastal Oceans and Research Analysis Laboratory (CORAL) at the University of Victoria. Laurens current research focuses on quantifying and modelling current and future vessel and shipsource noise exposure to marine mammals.

Kylee is a prairie girl gone coastal, growing up in Edmonton and relocating to Vancouver Island ten years ago. She completed her PhD at the University of Victoria studying the ecology of two invasive seaweeds on Vancouver Island. Kylee is an avid SCUBA diver and has conducted much of her research underwater. She has also spent time in Panama studying coral reproduction. She loves teaching students at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre and UVic and discussing the oceans with community groups around Vancouver Island.

Jessica Torode joined Ocean Wise’s Marine Mammal Research Program in February of 2017 as the Coordinator of the BC Cetacean Sightings Network. The network collects sightings of whales, dolphins, porpoises, and sea turtles from coastal citizens throughout BC for use in conservation-based research and education. Jessica worked as a marine mammal trainer and research assistant at aquariums in Canada and the US. She has also held numerous positions in wildlife rehabilitation centres, animal shelters, and veterinary clinics, and is a certified marine mammal medic. Jessica enjoys exploring the outdoors with her partner, Will, and her rescue dog, Scout. Jessica holds her Masters in Marine and Fisheries Ecology from the University of Aberdeen.

Marine Mammal Research Program in July 2017 as a Research Assistant and the Coordinator of the Wild Killer Whale Adoption Program – which raises funds through symbolic adoptions of B.C.’s killer whales to support conservation-oriented research conducted by the Research Program. She holds an MSc in Marine and Fisheries Ecology from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland where she studied how the schooling behaviour of fish affect marine mammal abundance and distribution. Brittany previously worked as a cetacean field assistant in Scotland and Italy, a naturalist on whale watching vessels in the Salish Sea and a fisheries observer in Scotland and Canada.

Thursday, March 15 Ucluelet GUEST SPEAKER: Jessica Torode, BC Cetacean Sightings Network; The Not-So Glamourous Life of a Marine Biologist 2–3pm, UCC, 500 Matterson Dr., Ucluelet George Fraser Community Room Whales, dolphins, and porpoises face many threats in BC, and saving these mammals is dirty work. From collecting whale snot to sifting through fecal samples, marine biologists go to great (and often quite unglamorous) lengths to help protect British Columbia’s vulnerable cetacean populations. Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) face many human-caused threats in our coastal waters, including reduced prey availability, exposure to contaminants, 20

noise from vessel traffic, entanglement in fishing gear, and injuries or death resulting from vessel collisions. Invasive species are thought to be one of the leading causes of loss of native species around the world. Much of our understanding of how invasive species affects native communities comes from work on terrestrial habitats but invasive species are just as important in our marine habitats. Depending on the invasive species, it can have a variety of impacts to that native ecosystems. I will start by discussing how marine invasive species are moved throughout our oceans and then explore some of the species which have invaded coastal British Columbia and some classic examples of invasive marine species. My goal is that you will leave with a more thorough understanding of the ecological importance of introduced species, the roles they can play in new environments, and gain a greater appreciation of the marine habitats around Vancouver Island.

It’s their breeding season and you can tell where they are by listening for their calls and watching for their jelly egg masses. This presentation will describe the natural history of our local species of amphibians, and the stewardship projects being done to safeguard their habitats. GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Lauren McWhinnie; Endangered Southern Resident Killer whales 3:30–4:30pm, Remote Passages Marine Excursions, 51 Wharf St, Tofino Exposure to ship-source marine noise is an emerging issue that is increasingly shown to interfere with many of key life functions of marine mammals such as their ability to communicate, forage and navigate. Cetaceans and in particular Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs) are already facing increasing amounts of noise exposure from large ships in the Salish Sea as marine vessel traffic increases. While the majority of large vessel movement can be captured and assessed through the use of Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), the contribution of smaller non-AIS vessels is not currently as quantifiable. Therefore our research focuses on collecting information on both non-AIS vessel and the presence of marine mammals (including SRKW) using three passive forms of data collection; an AIS receiver, hydrophones and a land-based camera. This talk will present an outline of the work being undertaken, from the design stages to 28

installation and highlight some of the initial findings from the early analysis work. It will also discuss the importance of this information within the designated Critical Habitat of endangered Southern Resident Killer whales.

Each year visitors to ArtSplash! are invited to vote for their favourite work of art. The criteria is straightforward, you simply choose the work of art that you like best and fill out a ballot. It has become a tradition that we feature the winning Artwork on the ArtSplash! Poster the following year. The honour has been captured by local artists like Giovi Corlazzoli, Signy Cohen, and Cindy Mawle. This year, the honour has been given to Mark Hobson, peoples’ choice winner, for his painting Bald Eagles Waiting for Salmon in Kynoch Inlet.
