Cranbrook Food Bank has gluten-free surplus ALEESHA KOERSEN

The Cranbrook Food Bank Society received a shipment of gluten free food at the beginning of this month. However, due to lack of public knowledge, most of the food has remained at the Food Bank. If the food is given out before its expira-

tion dates, the Food Bank will have no choice but to throw it away. While a gluten-free diet may seem like a fad, there are some who require gluten free options. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Those who suffer from celiac disease are unable to

digest the protein properly; therefore, need to cut it out of their diet. Tom Murphy, a volunteer at the Food Bank who is celiac himself understands the cost of buying gluten free. “We want to get this information out the public who needs this because gluten

free food is so expensive,” says Murphy in a phone call with the Townsman. Local grocery stores donate food three times a week to the Food Bank. Other community groups and members also collect and donate. The food is stored, organized and put into ham-

pers by volunteers for those who visit the Food Bank. Over 400 hampers are given out a month, but gluten-options are not readily available. The three-pallet shipment of gluten-free food includes flour, cookies, crackers and other food that is

traditionally made with rye, wheat, or barley. The Cranbrook Food Bank Society encourages those who are in need of gluten-free food to stop by. The Food Bank is located at 104 8 ave south and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am until 2 pm.

Initiative nears its funding target C AROLYN GR ANT

Last fall, when the Cranbrook-Kimberley Development Initiative was just in its infancy, Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick stated that the goal was to get 50 businesses on board, each contributing $5,000. That would create a bank account of $250,000, with the hope that matching funds could be leveraged through the Columbia Basin Trust. The funds will be used for targeted sales and marketing activities that promote the advantages of doing business in the Cranbrook Kimberley area.
