WorkSafeBC investigating fatal incident at Chilliwack worksite

‘Wonderful’ Surrey family man killed Jessica Peters Black Press

RCMP were on the scene at a construction site in Chilliwack Friday (March 11), following a workplace incident that killed a Surrey man and injured two others. Sebastian Gomez Obando, 24, was identified as the victim in an online fundraising drive launched by friends; the BC Coroner

confirmed the death on Tuesday. “With profound sadness, we all try to cope with the fact that at the age of 24 years old, there was a man that was taken away from his family, friends and coworkers. His name was Sebastian Gomez,” a friend wrote on the GoFundMe site. The creator of the fundraiser has set a goal of $50,000 to help ease the burden of

Gomez’s wife and children – a two-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl. “He will forever be in the hearts of many; but his wife, son, daughter, mother and father, and other family members’ lives will be forever changed. They need our support; but not just today, this week or this month. They need it for their future,” the page states. “For those of you who personally know this

wonderful man/family, we need to remember not just now, but months and years from now that this family needs constant support.” WorkSafeBC and the RCMP are investigating the incident that took place at about 8:30 a.m. last Friday. WorkSafe spokesperson Trish Knight Chernecki said Friday that critical-incident i see page 5

A team of cadets from White Rock will be heading to the Provincial Marksmanship Competition after taking first place at a regional contest in Aldergrove last weekend. The team – made up of members of the 907 Black Knights Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron – competed against 12 other Fraser Valley teams and came up with an aggregate score of 1,549, enough to send them to Vernon for provincials this spring. In addition to the team’s victory, Teresa Liao won Top Overall Marksman and Katharine Burnard won the Top Junior Marksman title. Last year, cadets from the White Rock squadron took home the gold medal at provincial championships. The victory marked the 14th provincial crown for a team headed up by longtime coach Vernon Brown. According to a news release, marksmanship in the cadet program is a physical and mentalfitness activity that promotes self-discipline, and cadets adhere to safety and training standards set by the Canadian Firearms Centre.
