Questions about recycling in general and Grand Forksâ downtown recycling bins in particular brought out about 15 residents to a meeting with the coordinator of waste management for the regional district. The group met on Thursday regarding the downtown recycle bins, which have since been removed from their location at the ďŹre hall. Tim Dueck, coordinator of solid waste management for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), talked about the reasons for moving the bins to the landďŹll and answered questions. Organizing the meeting, which was held at Happy Days Restaurant, was resident Lorraine Dick. âI thought the meeting went very well,â said Dick. âI think Tim answered the questions adequately. I believe we (consumers) have to become more conscientious about our ultimate responsibility for the stuff we buy. That stuff has to go somewhere. It doesnât just disappear. I hope that out of this meeting comes some changes in our buying practices. After all, we are the 99 per centâŚwe can and will make changes!â At the meeting, Dueck explained that virtually every resident in Grand Forks has curbside recycling. KBâs curbside recycling program has been funded by Multi-Materials BC (MMBC). MMBC, however, does not provide funding for unstaffed recycling bins such as the one that was at the ďŹre hall. The lawyers for Councillor Julia Butler and the lawyers for the City of Grand Forks have pleaded their cases to the Supreme Court of B.C. The case, which was seen by Judge B. Greyell on Monday COUN. JULIA BUTLER at the Vancouver Law Courts, stems from a petition from the city to disqualify Butler from ofďŹce for breach of oath of ofďŹce and conďŹict of interest. Judge Greyell determined a reserve judgement, which means he has yet to decide. A court representative stated that the judge will look over the documents received and release the judgement later, although no date has been determined. If disqualiďŹed, Butlerâs council seat would become vacant and a byelection would be held in the future to ďŹll her seat. Regardless, a byelection will need to be held this spring to ďŹll the seat vacated by Michael Wirischagin.
