$10 million injection will benefit Search and Rescue’s ‘small army’ C AROLYN GR ANT

It was a big surprise and a gift from the government, says Wendy Heatherington, Search Manager for Kimberley Search and Rescue. She is speaking of the announcement that came out late Tuesday that the province has committed a further $10 million for ground search and rescue. The one-time funding will help bolster training, administrative support and equipment renewals. “It’s a small army of 2,500 volunteers that comb the province’s backcountry, rappel into steep ravines and weather the worst of the elements, while leaving behind the comforts of home to go seek and find those who are lost or injured,” said Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness Naomi Yamamoto. “Their selflessness is woven into the fabric of their service, and today’s investment continues on our commitment to strengthening them and the tapestry of public safety throughout the province.”

Region receiving 29 nurses: IHA East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook slated for 16 new nurses TRE VOR CR AWLEY

With 300 nursing positions coming to the Interior Health Authority, it looks like 16 will be coming to Cranbrook and 29 to the East Kootenay region, according to an IHA spokesperson. “It is worth noting that these are the numbers as of today and they may change,” said Karl Hardt, a communications officer with IHA, in an email to the Daily Townsman. “We are reviewing the needs and vacancies regularly as we go through this process. Postings across Interior Health include a variety of nursing positions – in our facilities, either for general or specialty areas, or in the community.” The jobs are part of a province-wide effort to create an additional 1,600 nursing positions by March 2016.

Baker’s Orange Door opens doors to the musical mind

New software, mixing technology furthers MBSS music technology program as one of the most advanced and prolific in Canada BARRY COULTER

Mount Baker Secondary School’s innovative and renowned music recording program has taken a step upward into yet another level. The school’s Music Composition and Technology (MCT) Course, headed up by instructor

Evan Bueckert, has secured the rights to some top of the line software for its recording facility — Orange Door Studios — as well as some new hardware. Bueckert developed the Baker program and launched it in 2004. From a rudimentary rock school program of five students, it has

since then grown to a lab of 15 stations, involving 30 students each term, putting out two fully produced albums each year. “This has put us on the map as the most technologically advanced and prolific high school recording arts teaching studio in Canada,” Bueckert said, during a tour of the upgrades in the school music room. The new software is

called Reason 8.3, developed by the Swedish company Propellerhead Software. It is in the mail, and should be available for the class as the new term commences. Makayla Lubbers, in Grade 11, is familiar with earlier versions of the software, and describes it as a virtual studio.
