City looking at Wildstone’s future Official Community Plan may be modified to reflect changing real estate market conditions

TRE VOR CR AWLEY

First and second readings were given to amend Cranbrook’s Official Community Plan to update a neighbourhood plan in the Wild-

stone area at Monday night’s city council meeting. The proposed neighbourhood plan will result in a project that isn’t encumbered by existing

phasing requirements that were put in place before the real estate downturn in 2008. Elements of the existing plan have also been modified to reflect the

current vision for the project, which is to reduce the commercial component and complete removal of a second planned golf course.

Eric Sharpe, Director of Engineering and Development, gave an update to council on the plan during the meeting, noting that Wildstone is being broken up

into two neighbourhood phases 1 to 11 — and areas — the area imme- there was a requirement diately surrounding the that a certain percentgolf course, with the age of dwelling units other area being parcels would have to be develof land adjacent to Moir oped before you could Park which is known as move to the next phase,” the ‘Highlands’. said Sharpe. “A number of years “Currently, that just ago, the development isn’t feasible anymore had started under one now that the lands kind ownership group and of broken up and there’s the current OCP had a multiple owners.” phasing established for the development — See WILDSTONE, Page 3

United Way appeals after coming short of goal TOW N S M A N S TA F F

In a press release issued Tuesday, the United Way East Kootenay said it regrets having to report that the 2015 fundraising campaign is currently $45,000 short of the $175,000 goal. “The 2014 Campaign real-

ized amazing results, due in large part to the Finning Workplace Campaign which unfortunately could not be replicated in 2015 because of employee layoffs,” wrote Donna Brady Fields, Executive Director of the United Way East Kootenay. “In addi-

tion, a declining number of United Way donors, primarily those who have either relocated or passed away, have not been offset by new donors resulting in an overall shortfall.” Brady Fields pointed out that it is important for the

public to understand that United Way does not receive funding from any level of government but relies solely on community donations for community investments and operations.

Analyst expects gas prices to drop TRE VOR CR AWLEY

Prices at the pump should be dropping soon, according to a Canadian consumer advocate with Gasbuddy. com. Dan McTeague says that price relief in the range of three to seven cents should be coming soon to pumps in the Cranbrook/Kimberley area. McTeague, a former MP who has also worked

in the petroleum industry for over three decades, notes that there are a number of factors that work against local fuel prices. First, while Calgary flirts with 70 cents/litre prices, Cranbrook is hovering at 101.9/litre. McTeague says Calgary is a large market with quicker turnover of inventory.
