The corner office might as well have a revolving door. In October of this year, Parksville’s chief administrative officer Fred Manson announced his retirement. Later that month, the City of Nanaimo accepted the resignation of its top employee, Ted Swabey, who took the CAO’s job in Maple Ridge. A couple weeks after that, Regional District of Nanaimo CAO Paul Thorkelsson told his elected bosses he was leaving to take the same title in Saanich. Lantzville town hall, by any measure, has been a mess the last year or two, with town councillors resigning, nasty memos surfacing, by-elections and yes, the resignation of its CAO Twyla Graff in April. Graff, incidentally, is now Nanaimo’s CAO, on an interim basis. In a seven-month period this year, all the corner offices at town, city and regional district halls in a 30-kilometre radius became vacant. What is up with that? Allison Habkirk teaches local government courses at the University of Victoria and Capilano College. A city planner by training, Habkirk also has experience on the political side: she has served as both a councillor and mayor in Central Saanich. She also works with municipalities on their strategic planning. Habkirk says it’s normal in a year to see communities trying to fill about 25 of the 162 CAO positions in B.C. CASTING CALL IN PARKSVILLE

Seeking a spot on TV show Mid-Island residents looking for 15 minutes of fame on network television lined up in Parksville Wednesday afternoon to take a shot. Even if it does turn out to be more like 15 seconds. Casting director Travis Doering was in Parksville seeking extras to fill the background of a movie that will be filmed in and around the community from Dec. 6-20. “We were originally looking for 200 extras, but it looks like I’m going to get more than that, which is great,” said

Doering, from Vancouver-based Odyssey Media. “The more, the merrier.” The film, titled Family Court, is a family-friendly, Hallmark-style film about rekindling lost romance. And about basketball. Casting calls were held Wednesday morning in Nanaimo and later in the afternoon in Parksville, at the Beach Club Resort. Doering said he was seeking about 120 people for the film’s basketball scenes, and others to appear as waiters and caterers.

There was no audition involved. The casting call basically allowed Doering to collect contact information and get a current photo of each applicant. “If you ask people to send in a photo online, they tend to send their most flattering shot,” said Doering, who said the directors want “regular people” populating the background of the shots. The casting call invited potential extras from ages 18 to 70 and offered $10.45 an hour for those who are called in to work. See NO CHASE SCENES, page A7

Six months in jail for possessing child porn

A 55-year-old Parksville man pleaded guilty to possession and distribution of child pornography Monday in Nanaimo Provincial Court. Robert Berry has been sentenced to six months in jail with a threeyear probation order. In March, Oceanside RCMP executed a search warrant for a Parksville residence after the Integrated Child Exploitation (ICE) team alerted Mounties that a man was suspected to be in possession of child pornography. Berry was subsequently arrested and charges were recommended against him. “The RCMP takes child pornography . . . very seriously,” said Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman. The ICE was forwarded information from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations. “The internet has no borders so these crimes have to be addressed using partners worldwide,” said Foreman. U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations spokesperson Danielle Bennett was unable to comment on the specifics of the investigation, but noted “cases of child pornography are global in nature and the RCMP is our partner in the fight against child exploitation.” Bennett said often when dealing with child exploitation investigations the victim and perpetrator are in different countries. “This crime type requires a lot of global co-operation,” she said. “It requires law enforcement to work together across countries.” According to Statistics Canada, the number of police-reported sexual violations against children is on the rise. In total, there were approximately 4,500 police-reported sexual violations against children in 2014, about 300 more than in 2013 and resulting in a rate increase of six per cent.

There’s nothing quite like sharing a wonderful meal with others, especially when you made the food. Eight local seniors from the SOS Seniors Are Talking program are cooking and sharing meals weekly, in the Food Skills for Active Seniors program at Family Place. The program is an initiative of the Canadian Diabetes Association, with funding from the Ministry of Health. Seniors Are Talking members get transported to and from the program by the SOS bus. Miranda Cockayne facilitates the program, teaching cooking techniques and educating on food and healthy eating. She runs her own business in Parksville offering Cook for Health! workshops. Gweynneth Evans is a Seniors Are Talking member and is currently taking the program. She said she enjoys the food and the company. “I like that it’s an outing and it is nice to eat with other people, because when you’re on your own, you eat alone a lot,” she said. Shelley St. Marie is the Seniors Are Talking Coordinator at SOS. She said she came across the program when doing research on topics that are relevant and important to seniors. This is the second time she has signed up a group of her members. “The members in the last class very much enjoyed it, they learned many things they didn’t

know and appreciated being able to prepare the food and then eat it, taking any leftovers home,” said St. Marie. Food Skills for Active Seniors runs for six weeks and focuses on cooking healthy food from scratch, increasing seniors’ fruit and vegetable intake, and reducing the amount of salt, sugar and fat they consume. Seniors each get a cookbook on the first day of the class which they work through during the program, sharing the food at the end of each session. Menu items have included hummus and pita, roasted vegetables, skillet lasagna, tofu, goat cheese and bean quesadillas, fish chowder and a variety of desserts including peach apple cobbler. Every week the menu items get a little more challenging, as seniors’ cooking skills improve. As they share their meals, they talk about the food, why it’s healthy, and whether they’ve cooked with the items before. People can also donate at Qualicum Commons (744 Primrose St.) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. New, unwrapped gifts are also gratefully accepted at both locations during the stated times. There’s a growing sense of discontent amongst a group of retirees determined to get laid off — from volunteering at food banks. Freedom 90 is an advocacy group started in Ontario that has spread throughout the country made up of vocal seniors, many in their 60s and 70s, who want to retire from volunteering at food banks and soup kitchens before they turn 90. Ironically, their end goal is to make obsolete the food charities they helped create and continue to sustain. The unlikely group is made up of older, generally affluent people equipped with a lifetime of wisdom and nothing to lose. “Go ahead, fire us,” said Yvonne Kelly, a Freedom 90 member. “Take away our wages because we’re all volunteers anyways and we want to see the end of this need for food banks.” “We see ourselves as a different voice,” said Freedom 90’s Marsha Fox. “We’re the people on the front lines of food banks. We meet the people who come in, and we’re the ones faced with figuring out what to do when the food supply is dropping but you have an increased number of people showing up. We’re becoming the police force for food banks.” Joan Stonehocker is a Freedom 90 member who’s been writing reports on the demographics of food insecure people since the 1980s. Stonehocker said it feels like she writes the same report every year. “Despite going to food banks people are still very food insecure,” she said. “We’ve got to stop the madness Go ahead, fire us. Stilwell told The NEWS in an e-mail Sunday. “What we can do is create opportunities through education, skills training and well-paying jobs to help give people a hand up to help themselves secure a better long term future.” Stilwell said she “wholeheartedly” agrees food banks are not a long-term solution to hunger. “Even though B.C. is home to some of the most comprehensive supports in Canada for lowincome people and their families… it only takes one child to go hungry to know we are not doing enough,” she said. According to Food Banks B.C. executive director Laura Lansink, more than 30,000 children are using food banks in British Columbia every month — a statistic she called “disturbing.” A report released by First Call: B.C. Children and Youth Advocacy Coalition last month showed 20.4 per cent of British Columbian children under 18 years of age are living below the poverty line, representing one in five children in the province. There are now 97 food banks operating in B.C. and still, it’s not enough with nearly 60 per cent of those organizations reporting an increase in us-

age over the last year. “To address food insecurity, you need to address why individuals and families are food insecure and two major concerns are the need for affordable housing and a well-paying job, which is why I believe we need to help British Columbians get the skills they need for the jobs of today,” said Stilwell. “No one wants to see people living in poverty and I truly believe a good-paying job — one that provides people with dignity, respect and opportunity — creates an important foundation.” But Alberni Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser said job creation is not the answer to this problem. “The job thing is a slogan of a government that won’t acknowledge there’s a problem,” Fraser told The NEWS. “I applaud those groups who are stepping forward to try and help and the people donating to food banks and soup kitchens but these are signs that the government is failing. “This suggests, post election (Nov. 2014), there is conflict between the CAO and the newly-elected councils,” says Habkirk. She says there are at least two factors that are contributing to all this turnover: elected officials digging more into the day-to-day operations of municipal staff; and the emergence of social media as a forum for harsh critiques. For roughly 100 years, says Habkirk, Canada has operated under a municipal governance system that could be called the council-manager system. Council was said to have one employee, the CAO. It was up to that CAO — under policy direction from council — to manage the rest of the city’s employees and affairs. “It was a model that was developed to separate the politician from the administration and operations — there was a lot of corruption,” says Habkirk. That model seems to be changing in many B.C. municipalities, she says. “In the recent past there have been challenges to that system; councils want to be in the mix,” says Habkirk. “I’m not sure why that is. It’s kind of a dangerous development in my view and it creates a lot of conflict.”

Habkirk also says the advent of social media — there are many blogs and Facebook pages dedicated to goings-on at city halls — has made the life of managers more difficult. “There’s a level of vitriol that didn’t exist 10-15 years ago and I think that puts a lot of pressure on civil servants,” she says, adding that CAOs don’t feel they can get into back-and-forths on social media with critics — because of their codes of conduct and because they really can’t win. Manson, the retiring Parksville CAO, agrees, and he goes a bit further. He believes there has been a culture change, partly fuelled by social media and the ability to be anonymous with one’s comments. “When you were in a line-up in a theatre, no one would butt in front of you,” says Manson. “People were respectful; they might even open the door for you. (On social media), there’s no direct interaction. People can be rude and disrespectful and there’s no accountability.” Manson says this culture change has put a lot of pressure on people in the public eye, including politicians and CAOs. “And it’s going to continue to get worse,” he says. “There has to be some push back.”

Not everyone who applied will be called to work in the film, but each successful applicant is expected to be needed for only a day or two during the run of film production in Parksville. During filming, Doering said, Parksville residents won’t be seeing any big explosions or chase scenes.

HOMELESS IN PARKSVILLE

Brice tosses the business card and five dollar bill on the table with obvious disgust. He’s homeless and not in a position to refuse any sum of money, but he wants to make a point: this is what he got when he went to Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell’s office for help this week. Manna Ministries’ Robin Campbell read Stilwell’s letter to the editor in the Nov. 17 edition of The NEWS and said he thought he saw an opportunity to get the homeless and poor of the region more help. Stilwell ended her letter with this: “I care about all my constituents, and if you or someone you know is homeless or threatened with homelessness, please come by the office . . . for immediate assistance.” Campbell steered some people, including 41-year-old Brice and 24-yearold Jennifer, to the MLA’s office after reading that letter. “There are no resources there (at the MLA’s office) at all, not even a pamphlet” said Brice, smelling of woodsmoke and soon headed back with Jennifer to their tent near Wembley Mall. “I got a card and five bucks. They told me to go get a coffee while they called the Homelessness Task Force. That’s all they gave me.” Campbell, Brice and Jennifer knew

what the task force office was going to say. They have been there. There’s no housing available, period. “It was a very misleading letter that Stilwell wrote,” said Campbell, who has given out 85 tents this year to homeless people. “It’s a bull*&$@ story that Stilwell is going to help them.” Stilwell said Tuesday the $5 from staff was a “gesture of goodwill” while staff made some calls to try to help Brice. Stilwell said Brice did not return to the office to learn what staff had done on his behalf. Brice told The NEWS later Tuesday that Stilwell’s staff had sorted out some problems he had with social assistance, for which he was grateful, but nothing that would have him and Jennifer out of the tent any time soon. “As for the homeless part of it, not really — they just handed me off to (the homelessness task force),” said Brice. Brice was a painter. He said he has done many other jobs, too. He said he wants to work. Jennifer said the same. They said they are both on social assistance. Both said it’s difficult to seek work — if there are any jobs to be had at this time of year in this region. “We want to go to work, but it’s hard if you have no base,” said Brice. Both Brice and Jennifer have taken advantage of the extreme weather shelter in downtown Parksville, but they said that

arrangement has its own challenges. “You are afraid to leave your camp because things will get stolen,” said Brice. Operated by The Salvation Army and housed in its church at 187 Alberni Highway in Parksville, the extreme weather shelter is open from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. on nights of inclement or extreme weather only. Clients are provided with cots, blankets, pillows, along with an evening meal and breakfast. Transportation to and from the shelter is a challenge. Many homeless are camped a long way from downtown Parksville and it’s not like they have a computer or text alert to tell them when the shelter is actually open. “It sucks that they kick you out at 8 a.m. and you’re out in the cold all day,” said Jennifer. “The people don’t want to leave their camps when they don’t know if it (the extreme weather shelter) is open or not,” said Campbell. “And even if it’s five (degrees) above, it’s damp, it’s cold.” Brice said he would like to see a “surviving in Parksville guidebook” developed. He also had a request that’s been repeated time and time again in the city from service providers, homeless people and others: “I would like to see a homeless shelter built in this town.” Stilwell said Tuesday there’re no plans for a permanent shelter in Parksville Qualicum Beach, but “I’m not saying it’s not doable.”

eople can be rude. And that is doing serious damage to our democracy. They hide behind the anonymity of social media and fire hurtful barbs at those in power. Oh, they may put their name to their comments, but they certainly don’t deliver their critiques faceto-face. And these words hurt. An expert on municipal government says in a story in today’s paper this kind of culture change is one of the reasons why more than a quarter of all towns, cities and regional districts in this province have searched for a new chief administrative officer (CAO) this year. The Town of Qualicum Beach (less than two years ago), Parksville (this year), the Regional District of Nanaimo (this year), the City of Nanaimo (this year) and Lantzville (this year): CAO turnover in all of the communities within 30 km of Parksville’s world-famous beach. Perhaps you believe a thick skin should be a qualification for a top job at city hall that carries a salary of $150,000 or more. Perhaps you believe the trend being noted where councils are digging into more detail, getting more involved in the day-to-day operations of municipalities, is a good one. Councillors and mayors are accountable to the taxpayer. If there’s a sense the taxpayer (voter) wants councillors and mayors to pay more attention to the details of municipal operations, the politicians are likely to conduct themselves in that manner. So, staff are under a microscope from politicians while getting hammered online by the proverbial guy in his boxers with a laptop in his mother’s basement. Hmmm, $150,000/year doesn’t sound like that much anymore. What’s worse is how irresponsible, unaccountable social media comments are affecting the quality of the pool of people who would seek office. What person in their right mind would take that kind abuse for a town councillor’s salary? The answer to that, sadly, is someone who has an ego to feed or a specific agenda to push or a personal axe to grind with another councillor or group of councillors. Freedom of speech is one of the most important rights in our society. Like all freedoms and rights, it should not be employed in a manner that restricts the freedoms and rights of others. As long as there continues to be no reprisals, no accountability, the social media free-for-all that’s prevalent now has a chance to seriously erode our democracy. — Editorial by John Harding

water dysfunction and other points With tongue in cheek I made the following observations. I was astonished to see that 19 per cent of voters turned out for the water treatment plant/intake referendum in Parksville. With water being the most important issue today affecting all who require potable water to survive on Earth, that turnout was impressive. I see we are lucky to maintain the intake within the river stream downstream from spawning and dying salmon. Had it been moved further upstream to take advantage of greater storage and gravity for delivery, we would have lost that amazing water aroma in the fall and early winter. Another accomplishment: our storage will remain the same, at no cost. To all those that thought this long-term water management plan through and decided to give assent to a loan application, I give thanks. Here was a simple example of a local issue that could have been done right. At least one thing is very clear and confirms my suspicion that the world is truly dysfunctional. I’ve just arrived home fresh from a concert with the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra (NCO). While I’m exhausted from the thrill of performing, I must write about the event to encourage everyone to attend this same program when it comes to Parksville this Sunday, Dec. 6. The NCO string players represent a spectrum ages and abilities that include professionals, students and skilled amateurs.

Their mentoring program and annual Concerto Competition provide vital learning experiences for talented young musicians. The NCO is also a huge asset to the local arts community. This fall they played for Vancouver Island Opera’s production of Norma (a first for each). Two choral concerts I sang at this fall had some accompaniment by musicians from the NCO. We’ve never had such access to string accompaniment in our community before. The Prelude to Christmas is a very accessible program featuring some lovely pastoral-themed music (including the Scarlatti solo cantata that I’ll be singing). By accessible I mean that you don’t have to be a scholarly classical music aficionado to enjoy this event: you just have to like listening to sweet, relaxing string music. The program is light and festive without being crammed full of the monotonous seasonal music we hear over and over at this time of year. Sitting in the front row, the power of the strings filled me with a lovely sense of fullness and peace. Musical Director Karl Rainer offers some brief, informative program notes. memories of help in tough times

While reading the many recent articles in The NEWS and online relating to homelessness and refugees, I was reminded of my own story. When I entered Canada as an immigrant in 1971, we were well received. Even

though I could not speak English, I tried to make ends meet. This was accomplished by taking on various jobs, much different to those I was used to in the Netherlands, which were all related to heavy equipment sales. I began working for commission, selling vacuum cleaners. I had a good run on it, however, when it came to closing the deal I was not successful because in Holland I had learned not to depend on credit. Selling vacuum cleaners could only be successful if you adopted that concept. I declined to do that so I decided to work construction labour. After six weeks, just prior to Christmas, I was laid off. I tried hard to get other employment, but to no avail. However, we were very blessed. Just a few days before the Christmas celebrations began, we were surprised by Canadian friendship and generosity. Our Christmas was overwhelming in comparison to what we had been used to in Holland. Turkey and all the trimmings, a decorated tree and gifts for all were quietly and secretly delivered to our home. I still remember that previous to this I had contacted social services in Calgary because we needed financial help. It was a humiliating move, but there were very few questions asked and our daily needs were provided for. As a family, we remember those days of humanitarian generosity and kindness as the best experience of all-time in the worst of circumstances. I wish that all the refugees and homeless people hopefully can have a similar experience. Let us show with all the goodness in our hearts that we can reach out and make a difference to those who are most needy at this time in their lives. aRy sala Fanny Bay

Hildegard Buschhaus fled Soviet-occupied Poland as a refugee at the end of World War II, settled and married in West Germany, and eventually emigrated to Canada in 1974. The 87-year-old Coombs artist’s next destination on her world tour is Korea — and she never had to leave Vancouver Island to get there. A production crew from the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) spent parts of two days last week with Buschhaus and her husband, Gunter, interviewing the couple for an episode on “super seniors.” The program, which will air Jan. 6 in Korea, is part of a medical documentary series whose name translates to Life, Aging, Illness and Death. In addition to interviews with medical professionals, each episode of the program profiles several of these seniors, many of whom are more than 100 years old. “I’m only 87; I don’t know why they wanted to talk to me,” said Buschhaus. “I got a call from a KBS researcher in Los Angeles and she said she read some stories on the Internet about my running in the B.C. Seniors Games. “That came out of the blue.” Buschhaus does not simply run in the event, now called the B.C. 55+ Games. For more than a decade she has brought home as many as 10 medals a year — most of them gold — and set a pair of B.C. masters records in her age group. “We were researching about

NaNoose paiNter gets abstract

To say Cindy Jane Mersky took an unorthodox route to a career as an abstract artist lends a new definition to the term understatement. Canada’s early fur trappers and explorers probably had a more direct path. Some of her earliest art training came in medical school. Her first efforts painting in acrylic were done as watercolours. After years of creating the most rigid works of realism while scoffing at abstract painting, she now creates nothing but abstracts. And she discovered her defining painting technique not with a brush or palette knife, but with a power sander. “I don’t mind letting people see how I work, because I don’t even know what’s going to happen,” Mersky said while hosting a demonstration at Qualicum Art Supply during last weekend’s Art Walk in Qualicum Beach. “Let’s see what the forgers can do with that.” A cheerful, upbeat 57-yearold with a lively sense of humour, Mersky works out of Circus Poodle Studio in Nanoose Bay. Her abstract acrylic works, utilizing a textured, multi-lay-

ered process taken from the ancient Japanese sword-making form Makume-gane, have earned her residencies and gallery showings from Daugavpils, Latvia to Tbilisi, Georgia, and a double-page feature spread in International Artist Magazine. “Do art and go to places you’ve never heard of,” Mersky

said with a laugh. And yet, she has only been working in acrylic and in this form for a few years. She and her husband relocated to Nanoose Bay five years ago after she had spent several years “on the dark side” creating advertising copy as art director for a pharmaceutical advertis-

ing firm in Toronto. Much of her life’s work to that point had been in the medical field, thanks to her acceptance to one of a few coveted spots in a University of Toronto Art as Applied to Medicine degree program in 1982. Mersky already had a diploma in visual communications from the Alberta Col-

lege of Arts in Calgary and had been working as a graphic artist and photographer when she read a magazine feature about medical illustration. “I thought, ‘That’s what I want to do,’” Mersky said. “Growing up, I was trying to decide whether to be an artist or a doctor. Much to my father’s chagrine, I chose art. He really wanted to have a doctor in the family.” Dad didn’t get his doctor, but during her first year in the medical art program in Toronto, Mersky and the four other students accepted into the program took classes shoulder-to-shoulder with first-year medical students. “You had to know what they knew to be able to do that,” she said. With her Bachelor of Science in Art as Applied to Medicine, Mersky took a job in the medical art department, drawing penand-ink sketches of body organs, arterial systems and bone structure for Toronto General, a teaching hospital with medical photography and medical art programs. “I was doing illustrations for teaching purposes, or if a doctor was publishing a paper for a medical journal and needed an illustration.” However, those heady days in the 1980s gave way to the rise of the computer industry, and the job was gradually taken over by computers. Milner Gardens unveils the magic of season Display open to public most weekends in December

Milner Gardens in Qualicum Beach will open on some select weekends in December for its Milner Christmas Magic light show and holiday events. More than a kilometre and a half of lighted and decorated trails will greet

guests between 5 and 8:30 p.m. each evening. Openings will be held Dec. 6-8, 1113, and a five-day session Wednesday, Dec. 16 through Sunday, Dec. 20. Live music will be featured each evening, with a rotating lineup of different artists each night. Also meet Santa, bring the kids for storytelling and prizes in Teddy Bear Cottage. A flashlight is recom-

mended for the trail walk, and an onsite shuttle will be available for the mobility challenged. The Tea Room and two gift shops will be open, and refreshments will be available. Tearoom reservations will not be available during the Christmas Magic openings. Admission is by donation. Suggested

Mersky moved on to a firm that created educational materials for doctors looking to upgrade their education. The pharmaceutical advertising job followed, but the seeds of her conversion had been planted. “Every chance I could get, I took art workshops, landscape classes, photography,” Mersky said. “All that time, I was doing art on my own time.” With her sights set on landscape painting, she relocated to Vancouver Island. When the second session rolled around and she learned the curriculum, Mersky was crestfallen. “We were going to do abstracts, and I didn’t want to do that,” she said. “That’s not art. But I tried it, and it was so freeing. I haven’t done anything but abstracts since.” So, has Mersky finally arrived where she wants to be as an artist? “Oh, no,” she said. “I’m still evolving. I’m constantly learning new things.”

‘Glorious disruption’ The season of Advent is upon us and things are unfolding pretty much in the expected way. We got the Christmas lights up on the weekend and they were turned on Dec. 1. Why Dec. 1? I have no idea — it’s just what we do. We are off to get the tree shortly and that expedition will likely unfold in the way it has in years before: we look at trees, have a lively family discussion about the relative merits of each one, and eventually find something we can all agree on, all the while eating and drinking exactly what we ate and drank last year. The tree will be dressed in such a way as it looks like our previous trees and, as we have done before, the house will be massively over-decorated so that no room is left without being “Christmas-ified.” Not one. This is what we do in our house. We’re guided by our traditions and there is comfort there. I think it is fair to say that tradition plays a substantial role in how many of us live By Rev. Phil Spencer our lives, though it is by no means the only source of authority. Sometimes we rely on our feelings and our experience and that can be helpful, though to only rely on those things can also be dangerous. Feelings can sometimes be misleading, and experience is a limited thing. So, we also rely heavily on our powers of reason. Drawing on our intellectual insights is especially important in decision-making and in our understanding of what is happening in the world around us. Still, to only use reason as an authority is no less perilous than only using tradition or experience or emotion. Try telling that special someone in your life that you love them because you arrived at that conclusion through logic. Their response might indicate that a little more is required than pure reason. Does God speak to us through reason, experience and tradition? Most certainly. But for the followers of Jesus there is another source of authority in our lives, another way we believe God communicates with us. The Biblical story plays a unique role in that it is an external authority, something from outside of us that speaks into our experience, our reason, and our traditions, at times affirming, and at times challenging those things. It is both a comfort and a disruption in our lives … which also fairly describes the one whose arrival we will be celebrating on the 25th of December. Nobody was feeling blue when Eaglecrest Golf Club hosted its annual Bull Moose Movember Classic men’s golf tournament, but at least a few of the players looked that way. An overflow field of 164 golfers — many with their “Movember” mustaches in full flower — took part in the popular cold-weather tournament and raised a record $4,000plus for the Island Prostate Centre of Victoria. The Parksville foursome of Ian Cormack, Adam Waldie, Ian Waldie and Mike Thomas took home the coveted Best Team Mustache award. The four dyed their collection of mustaches, handlebars and goatees blue, and Adam Waldie sprouted a blue thatch of hair atop his otherwise shaved head. “It was pretty much as good as a tournament gets,” said Paul Kim, general manager of the Qualicum Beach club. “It was pretty spectacular to see the age range. It wasn’t a single demographic, and they came from all over the Island. It was a very positive event.” The local Eaglecrest team of Ian Blaikie, Harold Peltomaki, Ralph Bunker and Jim McKnight won the Most Life Experience Award while sporting whiskers of a more silvery hue. Sam Samuel, Will Mounsteven, Don Gosnell and Malcolm Hing of Campbell River’s Storey Creek Golf Club. The Bull Moose Classic has been held at Eaglecrest for decades as a fun, off-season men’s tourney. But in 2011 it adopted the Movember cause of men’s health and, in particular, prostate cancer awareness. Since the second year, in 2012, it has donated its proceeds to the Island Prostate Centre, which provides support services and education for victims, survivors and their families across the Island. Island Prostate Centre contributed a slideshow that was shown during the tournament’s breakfast and dinner, and a table was set up with its literature. “The (Canadian) Cancer Society gets a lot of money

through Movember and they spread that all over,” said Kim. “But for the Island, these guys do a good job for us.” The tournament was originally restricted to a maximum of 144 golfers, said Kim, but quickly ballooned above that number because he was unwilling to turn away golfers with a connection to the cause. “One of our members has prostate cancer, and he wasn’t given a doctor’s clearance to play until after we’d sold out,” Kim said. “Another gentleman from Courtenay, whose dad passed away last year, came because of all the stuff the Island Prostate Centre did for his dad. “A lot of times a golf tournament is just for fun. But this is more than just a golf tournament.”

NORMAN HENRY GOULD April 9, 1927 to November 29, 2015

Norm slipped away quietly in Qualicum, Sunday afternoon. Norm was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Harry and Bertha Gould and moved to BC at an early age. He joined the merchant navy during WWII and then served with the PPCLI for 18 years with postings in Germany and Ontario. Norm was an avid golfer and dedicated supporter and patron of the Oceanside General Junior Hockey team. Norm will be missed by his wife Phyllis, 5 children, 4 step-children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. No service by request. No flowers please but donations in Normâ€™s memory can be made to the Oceanside Generals Junior Hockey Society, PO Box 893, Main Station, Parksville, BC V9P 2J9.

Coralene Elsie Williston (nee McGrath) February 4, 1932-November 19, 2015

Coralene has donned her wings and flown. Survived by Husband John Williston Children: David (Ruth), Kevin, Daria (Duncan), Kerry (Anne), Danny (Susan) Grandchildren: Joanna, Heather, Alison, Andrea, Bryan, Riley, Erik, Leo Great Grandchildren: Kaye, Emmanuel, Melina, John, William, Emily, Athena Pre-deceased by beloved grandson Ian Born and raised in Port Colborne, Ontario, at 16 Coralene met and married John, 18, and they built a life together for 67 adventurous years. Five children were raised with loving determination and firm guidance; hamburger turned to filet, flurries of fish and chips, wild strawberry shortcakes and peanut butter crunchies, home-made fudge and famous piesâ€Ś Oh how you spoiled us Mum!Â A Sunday school teacher at Central United, who pedalled from ballpark to ballpark cheering her kids on, and knit toques for entire hockey teamsâ€Ś Coralene found ways to contribute, even while battling ongoing ill health and raising an active family, always with a kind smile. With an ever increasing fold of grandchildren, in 1987 Coralene and John retired to Vancouver Island enjoying 28 more years of travel, family visits, new friends, community and well-earned repose. Nothing delighted Coralene more than time with her grandchildren; the little ones, and what a wonderful influence she was. For this we are truly grateful and indebted. All who landed on Coraleneâ€™s doorstep were treated like family and no wife and mother was more devoted to her flock. Her memory remains a shining beacon of perseverance, fairness and love of family and life. Many thanks to all caregivers and staff of The Gardens of Qualicum Beach for 5 months of dedicated care. Our hearts are heavy and we feel great loss, but Coralene lives on in the hearts of all those infused by her vibrant spirit.

Lillian will be sadly missed by her devoted husband of 53 years, Max Geigl; beloved son, Randy Happach; special inlaw, Sharon Happach; cherished grand daughters, Stephanie Happach, Candace Happach; and great grandson, Jack Happach. She was endeared Aunt â€œLillyâ€? by her nieces: Valerie (Fred) Hunt, Diane (Jim) Znidarsic, Linda (Dave) Elder, Zoe Anne (David) Clemson, Daphne McPherson, Tara (Gordon) Rhodes , Sheryl (Wesley) Desy; nephew Kevyn (Hilda) Jacobsen, also by cousins, Margaret Chipman, Rasmus Jorgensen, Hans Kopperstad. Lillian was born in Norway and came to Canada in 1924 with her family. She was predeceased by parents, Nils and Marie Jacobsen, Sigrid Peterson, Ben Jacobsen, John Jacobsen. Lillian graduated from Alberni District High School in 1940. Her education continued at Sprott Shaw Business College, Vancouver. She enjoyed a secretarial career that spanned 45 years working for senior executives at Boeing Aircraft Company on Sea Island during WWII; forest companies, Bloedel, Stewart & Welch Limited, and MacMillan Bloedel Limited alternately at their Port Alberni and Vancouver offices. Lillian also assisted her mother with administration at Greenwood Hotel, Port Alberni. In 2010, she edited and published a book entitled â€œBe My Guestâ€?â€”The Memoirs of Marie Jacobsen, Alberni Hotelier. In her teens Lillian studied the violin and was a member of Maurice Kushnerâ€™s Youth Orchestra, which nurtured her lifelong enjoyment of classical music. In 1940, she was a winner at the Nanaimo Musical Festival. Lillian belonged to the Taoist Tai Chi Society and practiced for many years in Qualicum Beach. The power of spiritual awareness sustained Lillianâ€™s life purpose to assist others reach their potential goals. A visitation with reception was held for Lillian on Monday, November 30th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Yates Funeral Chapel, 1000 Allsbrook Road in Parksville. Reginald John Hawkes of Nanoose Bay, BC, passed away peacefully at home on November 25, 2015 at the age of 71. Reg was pre-deceased by his parents; his brother, Bob; and sister-in-law, Joanne. It was a tough end to a great season for the Ballenas Whalers junior football team, as they lost a provincial semi-final game against the Mission Roadrunners 14-6 in Burnaby last week. Undefeated leading into the game, the Whalers were just one victory away from playing under the bright lights in B.C. Place for the Junior Varsity Provincial Championship. However, it wasn’t in the cards for the Whalers, who played a heck of a game defensively but couldn’t quite find what they

needed on offense. “It was a tough loss,” head coach Jeremy Conn said. “They caught us on a deep pass and returned a punt for a touchdown, that was it. We played great team defense and unfortunately, we just couldn’t make the plays we needed to when we had the ball. But we had a great season.” “Looking back to how it all started, not knowing if we were even going to have enough players to last the season, we came a long way. Everyone stayed committed and we did some great things.” Conn liked what he saw with

each passing game and is excited at the prospect of what this group will bring to the table next season. “We’re going to have a good core group returning,” Conn said. “We’ve got 13 juniors coming back and a great group of players coming up though Oceanside Youth Football for next year’s team.” “Our seniors are going to be strong too, with a good core returning for them and some of our guys moving up as well. Both teams are going to be solid next season, I’m really looking forward to it.”

It wasn’t quite the finish they were looking for but the Kwalikum Kondors senior boys soccer team capped off an impressive season with a seventh-place provincial finish. After being undefeated in league play, winning the North Island title and finishing second at the Island Championships, the Kwalikum Kondors were looking to make their mark at the provincial championships last week in Burnaby. After a tournament opening loss to the eventual champions, Okanagan Mission 2-1, the Kondors bounced back to win two of their next three games, finishing second in their pool. “That was tough for us,” head coach Butch Gayton said. “Heading into that tournament, we had a lot of high expectations for ourselves. These boys had played so great all season and we were really riding a wave of momentum heading into that first game.” “Okanagan Mission were a good team, they had height on their side as well with quite a few of their players a good four or five inches taller than our tallest player. They took advantage of that and made us pay. We had our chances to score and just couldn’t bury them.” Another loss in their fourth game of the tournament saw them pitted in the game for seventh place. Tournament seeding had put the Kondors in a position to play as high as fourth place but they ended up losing 2-0 to Alpha (Burnaby) to drop down to play for seventh place.

“We had an outside shot to finish high,” Gayton said. “We just couldn’t make it happen. It’s just one of those things where you’ve been able to score the ball frequently all season and then you’re snake bitten. You hit a couple of posts, have a few shots that narrowly miss, it’s the ugly side to this beautiful game.” In their final game, the Kondors found that scoring touch, beating David Thompson (Vancouver) 4-1 to finish in seventh. “That was a big win in all kinds of ways,” Gayton said. “They were pretty down after losing that fourth game, falling to play for seventh or eight place. But the boys were able to pick themselves up and bounced back very well in that final game.” “The effort they showed was tremendous and I was very happy to see them play that game for themselves and earn a respectable seventh-place finish in the province. It’s never easy once you get to the provincials, anything can happen for anyone.” “It just wasn’t meant to be for us to finish where we wanted to but we’re proud of that seventh-place finish no matter what happened before for us.” The team narrowly missed making the provincials last season. Gayton said it was “their determination and desire not to let that happen again” that got them to the big dance. “They worked hard for it,” Gayton said. “They all told me at the start of the year we were going to provincials and we did, so my hats off to that group of guys for fighting for what they believed in.”

The effectiveness of flu vaccination in protecting those at risk of hospitalization and/or death from the flu may be confounded by the fact that, in some years, the vaccine is not well-matched with the circulating viruses. Researchers from Brown Dean University performed a retrospective study on more Pharmacist than 1 million nursing home residents and found /Manager that, in years where the vaccine was well-matched, there was a 4% reduction in hospitalization and a 2% drop in death rate. In an American prospective study, flu vaccination was found to reduce hospital admissions due to pneumonia by half. Influenza pneumonia is a serious complication of the flu which usually develops in the elderly, very young and those with chronic health problems. This study underscores the value of flu vaccination; it’s not about preventing the nuisance of the flu in otherwise healthy people but, rather, is to protect the vulnerable from serious illness or death. Early indicators suggested that this year’s flu vaccine is a close match – at least for the H3N2 component which is typically responsible for the most serious illness – however, there have been some outbreaks of an unmatched version of the bug. The flu is notorious for its spontaneous mutations so only time will tell. That said, even in a year with a sub-optimal vaccine, it still provides some protection and reduces the severity of illness in those who do contract the flu!
