Teachers and support staff throughout School District 69 have spent valuable time through the first three months of school dealing with shortcomings of B.C.’s new online student information system, school officials said. And now the SD69 Board of Trustees wants some payback. During their regular meeting last week at the board office in Parksville, trustees unanimously approved a motion that would urge the Ministry of Education to seek a “resolution with compensation” from the software’s developer and use that compensation to “address unanticipated costs” to school districts. “These people got $95 million of our taxpayers’ money, and the fact is they handed us a diesel Volkswagen computer program that isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do,” trustee Barry Kurland said during last month’s meeting, when he sought direction to draft the motion. “It raises the question, ‘What are they going to do about it?’” At issue is the new MyEducationBC student information software program, contracted by the Ministry of Education from Fujitsu Consulting (Canada). The program, which replaces the BCeSIS software, is being introduced to school districts across the province in a staggered rollout. Immediately upon its implementation in Parksville Qualicum this September, however, MyEducationBC proved all but unusable as teachers, support staff and building administrators reported inability to access the system, dropped or missing information and other snags. About 100 people gathered and marched in Parksville on Sunday for climate justice, part of a global effort ahead of the Paris talks this week that will involve 150 world leaders. up,” said Brian Pasquill, the president and CEO of a company (Recap Power Works) that offers renewable energy solutions. “Awareness is starting to happen — people care and now we have the technology to do it.” Pasquill spoke about things people can do in their own homes to save energy, including the use of LED lights. “We have to start in our homes with our own energy consumption,” he said. The Town of Qualicum Beach’s director of planning, Luke Sales, also

urged people to do what they can in their homes and lives. “At a personal level, there’s a lot we can do,” he said. Sales pointed to transportation as “the No. 1 challenge we have,” citing statistics that show 60-70 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions come from fossil-fuel-burning vehicles. Wilderness group awards CoalWatch prez

John Snyder, a person familiar to readers who have followed the Raven Coal Mine story, has been awarded the 2015 Eugene Rogers Environmental Award by the Wilderness Committee, according to a news release from the Island branch of the group. The committe said under Snyder’s leadership, CoalWatch has worked with local citizens, business owners, municipal government leaders and environmental groups like the Wilderness Committee to successfully fight off the proposed Raven Underground Coal Mine. “Working with people like John has been the best part about the fight to stop this short-sighted mine,” said Torrance Coste, Vancouver Island Campaigner with the Wilderness Committee. “I’ve learned a great deal from John’s steady leadership and constant humour, and will always look up to him as a mentor.” Earlier this year the proponent withdrew its application for the Raven project, but the application hasn’t yet been terminated by the BC Environmental Assessment Office. “I’d like to thank the Wilderness Committee for its steadfast support on the Raven Coal Mine issue over the past six years,” Snyder said. “The actions of thousands of concerned citizens have prevented this mine from becoming a reality, and on behalf of all of those who have raised their voices, I’m greatly honoured to receive this award.” Snyder was presented with the award — along with a $1,000 prize — this past weekend at the Wilderness Committee’s AGM. — NEWS Staff/Wilderness Committee news release

Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns also provided some remarks for the gathering before hopping on a plane to Ottawa. “The new Liberal government has made important commitments to Canadians and the world, but words must be backed by real action,” said Johns. “The climate conference in Paris will only be considered a success if countries agree on binding emission reduction targets, concrete plans and credible accountability mechanisms for reaching these targets and assisting the developing world with transition and climate mitigation.” Electric-car-maker Randy Holmquist also spoke about the need to make changes at home. His company, Canadian Electric Vehicles, has been making electric cars for 25 years. “We’re just this little company in Errington, but we can make a difference,” he said. Rev. Andrew Twiddy of the Anglican parish of St. Anne and St. Edmund in Parksville spoke about his experiences recently in Rome and the

leadership being shown on climate justice by Pope Francis. “If we carry on with business as usual we will not have a sustainable planet to do business as usual,” said Twiddy. Qualicum First Nations Chief Michael Recalma opened up the meeting with a welcome and this: “We have a chance to help Mother Nature.” The Parksville rally was one of more than 2,300 events scheduled on Sunday, the eve of the Paris summit. People marched all over Canada to send a message to the new government that climate action is a priority. There were at least six other marches scheduled on the Island and more than 2,400 people are registered in Vancouver. It was unclear who organized the Parksville event, which was emceed by Anne O’Sullivan, who asked for donations because she said she paid for the hall. The NEWS also received e-mails about the event from local members of Avaaz, which means ‘voice’ in several European, Middle Eastern and Asian languages. According to its website, Avaaz launched in 2007 “with a simple democratic mission: organize citizens of all nations to close the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want.”

STATE OF THE ISLAND ECONOMY REPORT

The first ever State of the Island Economic Report paints a pretty healthy picture of areas like tourism, but points to some areas that need attention. “The importance of transportation in terms of cost, time efficiency and reliability is noted as particularly important to the economic vitality and viability of Vancouver Island purely because we are accessible only by water and air and not by road,” said Ron Cantelon, Chair of the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance (VIEA) in the forward. The report also points to the growing importance of First Nations’ business and economic development, “as several First Nations approach completion of treaty settlements,” he said. VIEA President and CEO George Hanson said that due to the low Canadian dollar, “In the immediate term we can expect tourism to continue to be strong on the Island, through 2016.” He said this provides “an opportunity for communities, tourism organizations and tour-

ism businesses to take advantage of that immediate opportunity by upping their game and marketing it to Canadian, and U.S. markets in particular.” The concise pamphlet style 52-page report (available at www.viea.ca) provides a detailed economic snap shot of the Island in 2015, with historical context and brings up problem areas, but doesn’t offer solutions. It highlights the key challenges as being the aging population creating a shortage of qualified labour, the high cost of transportation and the small scale of the Island economy limiting growth of individual businesses. It does break the economics down in a fair bit of detail, with charts and graphs of things like employment per industry (health care and social assistance is highest at 54,000), the impact of the fishery (about 60 per cent of the province’s $410 million) and the continued dominance of forestry, though declining. It also highlights the growing importance of international students, with 8,133 on the Island in 2013, of which 1,824 were in the Regional District of Nanaimo. Qualicum Beach Coun. Craig Bay residents donated 2,800 pounds of food and $4,300 in cash to the recent emergency services food drive, and they are challenging other communities and strata to join the effort. “Craig Bay really stepped up,” said Liz Olson, Parksville Volunteer Fire Department member and food drive organizer. “A few years ago the idea in the community was that they were just a ritzy area, not really part of town, so they decided to get involved and change that image,” Olson said. The total amount gathered in this year’s drive hasn’t been tabulated yet, but Olson said Craig Bay provided a good portion of the city’s contribution, including almost half the cash collected so far.

“It’s impressive what you can do with a bit of cheerleading,” said Penny Rutherford, co-chair of the Craig Bay food drive committee. She thanked all the volunteers and Tim Horton’s for a coffee donation on the day. “I know they don’t want it to be about them,” Olson said, “but they deserve some recognition, they put a lot of work into this, it goes on for months.” She said the various fire department and search and rescue volunteers simply can’t go to every individual apartment or strata unit so they encourage groups to gather donations on a smaller scale to make for more efficient pick-ups. The PVFD distributed boxes to 19 buildings for people to fill, but Olson hopes more groups will help on the building or small neighbourhood level. While that food drive is over, the Salvation Army Food Bank is always happy to receive donations. Call 240-248-8794 or stop at 886 Wembley Road.

ndrew Twiddy is an Anglican minister in Parksville. Not too many years ago, it would be rare and/or shocking to hear a representative of the Anglican church wax poetic about the Pope. Twiddy was almost gushing on Sunday in his praise and admiration for the leader of the world’s billion-plus Roman Catholics, Pope Francis. Twiddy was speaking at a gathering for climate justice at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre. Twiddy represents a Christian religion that could be called the official opposition to Roman Catholicism for centuries. And a sworn enemy in certain times and places (think Ireland). But here he was on Sunday, spending almost all of his speech on the words and leadership of the Catholic Pope Francis. This tells us at least two things. First, Francis is not your father’s pope. There is a different kind of leader in the Vatican these days. Second, and most germane to Sunday’s proceedings and the talks in Paris this week, Twiddy was illustrating, through the words and actions of Pope Francis, that old boundaries, religions, hatreds and animosities need to be cast aside if we are to slow the destruction of the one thing for which we all have a common interest: the health of this planet. The Parksville event was one of about 2,300 worldwide on Sunday. It was an effort to send a message to the 150 world leaders attending the COP21 climate talks in Paris this week. Our new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Paris, as well as our Premier Christy Clark (and many other premiers, staff, etc.). Why we need so many representatives is another argument for another time, but Trudeau and a few advisors/cabinet ministers/scientists/security would have sufficed. If nothing else, think of the reduction in jet fuel burning. While Trudeau continues to enjoy his political honeymoon here, it’s important to note he is not opposed to the continuation of fossil fuel extraction in Canada. He is also not opposed to the expansion of the Trans Mountain project, which would create a twinned pipeline from Alberta to Burnaby that would increase the capacity of the system to 890,000 barrels of oil a day from the current 300,000. Trudeau has said it’s important to get Canada’s goods to market. That means pipeline expansion and a major increase in the number of tankers on B.C.’s coast. We agree with the goods-to-market stance of our new prime minister. We do not agree, however, that Trudeau can assume a role as some kind of environmental champion on the world stage. — Editorial by John Harding

Re: your story about Trip Advisor making Parksville a top destination for 2016. We would do better if something was done about the two major eyesores on the beachfront. We all know what and where they are. Ugly is ugly and both properties are dangerous; great hangouts for transients and rats. Let’s clean up those dumps, whomever owns them. ‘sPoiled child’ hoPe I felt I must correct some of the comments made by Christine Kemp in her letter to the editor (The NEWS, Nov. 26). In her first paragraph, she says Stephen Harper inherited the senator scandal — he appointed Mike Duffy to the Senate, he did not “inherit” him. In the second paragraph she says her visitors “think Islanders are ignorant” — a large proportion of our Islanders obviously thought it was time to stop Harper and wisely voted to do just that. There are many skilled, talented and professional people on our Island who were not lead by the nose by very expensive rhetoric from the government and were tired of one-man rule. Paragraph three mentions a spoiled child and unscreened foreign settlers? The spoiled child has been around politics since he was a child and has seen it from many sides from many influential people. The refugees go through a three-stage process which is difficult at the best of times, but it is going to be very difficult because of recent events. We know that because it has been described in the news at least three times that I have seen. Hopefully, the spoiled child will re-hire the scientists Harper fired because their research showed holes in some of his policies. For example, Dr. Kristi Miller, from one of the three accredited labs in the world for testing fish diseases, located in Nanaimo, found ISA virus in the Norwegian fish farms off the B.C. coast. A notice came out from the PMO directing her to not make the research public; it only became public because of the $6 million Cohen Commission, where she was told to present her findings. She was

share the wealth Re: Tony Markle’s recent letter to the editor about refugees. I am sorry to hear a community member focusing on all that will be taken from us rather than embracing the love and compassion that makes the world a place for all to live in, in peace. I am challenged to understand how Markle believes that the homeless and refugee housing equate. The complexity of homeless people embraces the issue of drugs and mental heath, the big business of temporary sheltering that diminishes the funds for permanent shelters and the needs of the homeless to live in very specific places. We have a government that has destroyed a large hospital in Abbotsford rather than using it for housing. Here in this community, we have an empty elementary school, which we pay to maintain. In my estimation there is very little will by some levels of government and the public to address the homeless. I recently read of $15 million being used to subsidize a future art gallery that would house photography. The article suggested that this new gallery will enhance the beauty of the lower Lonsdale area. The gallery was the wonder of a large development company that has built housing throughout the Lower Mainland. What about the need for affordable housing? Probably not enhancing for the many upscale communities that have sprung up every where. The housing choices that will be offered for the refugees will come from citizens and charity organizations that have found housing for these new residents, but there is no doubt that this housing would never serve the homeless for many reasons. This government doesn’t care about health care costs, other than to remind us how much money we are taking from other services, as though we are in charge of this

system. In fact, we have a government that has chosen a model of health authorities that have no accountability to the public, but prevent the opportunity for dialogue with the government. We have only to look at the Oceanside Health Centre, a centre that has served the authority to a greater extent than the public. The health providers and the users needs were disregarded and so for a $17 million cost we have failed the citizens but met the needs of government. Markle said “charity is great if you can afford it.” This community has great wealth. The ultimate sacrifice that we the Canadian public will be making is to share our values and embrace the changes that new cultures bring. Pauline liste Errington

well taken care of On Sept. 2, I was in a car accident on Despard Avenue outside of the Oceanside Health Centre. I would like to make a long overdue thank-you to the first attending people and witnesses who called 911 and checked on the drivers and passengers. From my standpoint of confusion, everybody worked together like a well-oiled machine. Everybody was so kind, professional and comforting. Thank-you to the ambulance paramedics, Barry and Sir Ed. You were comforting, confident and dealt with my shock well and with a good sense of humour. Humour is what keeps me from panicking. To the attending policeman, thank-you for all your attention and making my husband feel better. (My husband decided to walk home after work and just happened upon our accident). To the tow truck driver, thank-you for letting me know the next processes concerning my car. You were so friendly and informative. And to the urgent care doctors and nurses, thank-you for your patience and kindness. To the gentleman in the other car, thank-you for your due diligence calling in. I hope you are well. To sum it up, this experience was scary, but these people made it a lot easier to deal with. I was able to focus on my daughter and myself instead of the process. Interest in local history remains strong. In July, 2017 Canada will celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Confederation. As we plan how to best be part of these celebrations and design our own, we are reflecting on our own local history. What were things like here 150 years ago? How many people lived here, where did they live, who were they? What did they do? What did Robert Brown and his group find when he was selected in 1864 to lead the Vancouver Island Exploratory Expedition? We know that there was vibrant First Nations culture. We know that European explorers had already travelled through the waters between our island and the mainland. These explorers named geographic areas and then even more travellers arrived via the marine highway. There was brisk trade in sea otter pelts and other furs, whaling, and eventually mining began in the Nanaimo area. The Gold Rush attracted people to the Pacific Northwest and then the beauty and bounty of the area kept them here. As marine travel increased so did

Books such as Brad Wylie’s History of Qualicum Beach, which I have quoted from here, are a great starting point. Yet, we want to capture more. Local residents and visitors have lots of questions that we want to be able to answer. Please take the time to record your family and friend’s stories, look for vintage photos and ask your older family members to name who is in each one – before they forget or lose their sight. Then ask them if they are willing to share them with us. If you discover any old postcards, local advertising, guest books or other memorabilia about the local area – consider either donating it to the local museum or allowing us to scan it. Let’s build our local story together so we know it is inclusive and as rich as it can be in content. Netanja Waddell is the Museum Manager in Qualicum Beach and is a trained archivist. Did you know that in 1790 competing explorers almost started a war... instead it was “resolved by the Nootka Convention which established that each nation should be free to navigate and fish in the Pacific, and to land at unoccupied places to trade and found establishments.” The British and Spanish agreed to map the Strait of Georgia. The Spanish mapped the east side of Vancouver Island, and Captain Vancouver of the British mapped the mainland side. “This explains why so many islands in the strait have Spanish names, such as Lasqueti, Texada, Galiano, Quadra and Cortes.” As you can imagine every decade of the last 150 years has interesting stories to tell. Your local museums are here to tell them. We need your “bits and pieces” of our local stories so we have a more comprehensive story to tell in 2017.

While there have been incidents of drone aircraft harassing people or wildlife and even hampering forest firefighters, they can be a powerful tool. Aretas Aerial recently moved to a little rural Dashwood shop from northern B.C. and started producing UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) with advanced sensors and cameras for all kinds of applications. Aretas’ business development officer Greg Duerksen, a firefighter, is most excited about the valuable help the drones can offer fire departments, like that in Mackenzie, in northern B.C., which bought the first one. During its first flight in Mackenzie, the UAV flew over a hog fuel (wood chip) pile of concern, sending live, high-definition (HD) video and thermal imagery to the base station where fire department and B.C. Wildfire Service representatives could see stress cracks, vents and hot spots they couldn’t have seen any other way. “Already in its first flight, the UAV has proven to be an invaluable piece of equipment,” said Deputy Chief Keinan Carty in a news release. Chief Jamie Guise agreed. “We embrace the use of UAV’s as a tool in our fire rescue service. We have hand-held FLIR (forward looking infrared) cameras, dash cams and automated pumping systems in our engines. UAV’s equipped with HD and FLIR cameras allow us to perform our duties safely and efficiently.” Parent company Aretas Sensor Networks started five and a half years ago developing high-tech sensors for things like carbon dioxide or radiation, and the software to control it remotely, turning on fans, for example, said Duerksen. The company expanded into drones, “because we really like them, we simply think they’re cool,” he said, adding it was a natural step to find another platform for the advance sensors they were already making.

With about five employees working in Dashwood, and many more in various far-flung locations like Toronto, California and Mexico, they custom build every drone, with the fire service models carrying cameras, GPS and mission planning software that allows them to do things like leave it hovering in a stationary position above a fire. Dan Pothier, who owns the company with his wife Jessica, said their entire drone package costs about the same $10,000 fire departments have been spending on handheld infrared cameras in recent years. While the initial model was a quad-rotor design a few times the size of the larg-

est retail models, they can do any configuration and are currently working on an eight motor version that could have a total payload of 50 pounds, though you wouldn’t fly it at its maximum payload, Duerksen said. Flight times vary considerably depending on payload, weather and the type of flying, but range up to about half an hour, with quick battery changes available. Potheir suggested possible uses like flying along pipelines “smelling” for leaks, finding people in remote areas and dropping an emergency package while they are being rescued, or monitoring unstable nuclear power plants.

“This is a new industry, so we’re working closely with the industry and Transport Canada to develop it safely and legally,” Potheir said. “We’re basically selling flying robots,” Duerksen said, admitting the complexities, adding they have their own training programs for customers and work with them on safe use. While enforcement is sometimes an issue, Duerksen said Transport Canada does have UAV regulations, with different weight categories determining the level of certification required. Little artist wins big A seven-year-old Nanoose Bay girl has been selected as one of nine winners provincewide in the National Forest Week art contest, the Association of B.C. Forest Professionals (ABCFP) announced this week. Kaity Mercer, a Grade 2 student at Nanoose Bay Elementary, was selected runner-up in age 6-8 category for her colourful crayon portrayal of a forest scene. It features towering Douglas fir and pine trees, smaller saplings and under-

brush, rocks with moss and birds, all under a smiling sun. “I used gel pens, markers and crayon,” said Mercer, who takes art lessons after school as well as dancing. Mercer’s piece and those of the other eight finalists will be published in the ABCFP’s magazine. The art contest, now in its eighth year, is launched during National Forest Week as a way to help children learn about and celebrate the forests. — NEWS Staff

Singer-songwriter Beth Marie Anderson will be home for the holidays when she stops for a concert Dec. 4 at Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. The locally raised performer and recording artist, who splits her time between B.C. and Nashville, Tenn., is back as part of her Vancouver Island Christmas Tour. The tour will span the mid and south Island over a three-week period in December, including a pair of Dec. 14 performances at seniors facilities in Parksville.

Anderson is coming off an appearance at the B.C. Country Music Awards, where she was nominated for Album of the Year. This fall, she performed during the Canadian Country Music Awards in Halifax. Anderson has recorded two albums, and in 2012 was nominated for Song of the Year at the Vancouver Island Music Awards. Orchestra concert slated Errington soprano Skye Donald will be featured as the guest artist when the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra presents an Early Music concert Sunday, Dec. 6, at St. Edmund’s Anglican Church. Donald, a long-time Errington resident, is a popular soloist throughout the mid-Island region, especially in the operatic genre. She recently performed a solo concert, Arie Antiche, a program of Early Music arias and art songs. Swain caps open stage The monthly Qualicum Acoustic Cafe returns Friday evening with an hour of open stage performances followed by a set from Juno nominee Oliver Swain, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Rotary House in Qualicum Beach. Swain is a two-time Prairie Music Award recipient who hails from Victoria. A banjo and bass player and vocalist with “good patter,” Swain replace previously scheduled guest Scott O’Shea, who was forced to cancel. The open stage is open to all entertainment types. 10 minutes in front of an audience of up to 80, may contact organizers to schedule a slot for songs, poems, stories, comedy acts, dance or other entertainment. Victor Neil Blue Victor Neil Blue ended his couragious battle and passed away peacefully Sunday November 22 at the age of 73. Born Aug 19, 1942 in Prince George. Survived by Teresa King c/l wife of 25 yrs, sons Tony (Lisa), Steve (Lionel), grandson Tyler, granddaughter Brittany, sister Claudia and brother Gordon. Vic spent his life protecting and caring for others as a professional fire fighter for the Kelowna Fire Department, retiring in 2002 after 29 years of service. He was also a very talented artist and graduated with honors from BCIT working for several years in the sign business. Vic was a very outgoing, outspoken guy and loved to strike up conversations anywhere. He was a very memorable character and made many friends not easily forgotten by those who knew him. He continued to share his knowledge of life, along with his carismatic wit and humour with friends and family right up to his last days. No funeral by request with a Celebration of Life to follow in Parksville at a later date.

She began her teaching career at Sacre Coeur in Val Caron, taught at Ecole Ste Marie in Capreol for many years, then finished her career at Notre Dame du Rosaire in Blezard Valley, ON. She retired from teaching in 2000. She enjoyed travelling with her husband, working on crafts and fine needlework, and spent many hours tending her flower garden. She was an avid reader and enjoyed baking. She loved helping anyone in need and touched many with her happy, enthusiastic, and optimistic view of life. She moved to Parksville with her husband in 2005. Taking to the big stage at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam, Lee McGraw earned a well-deserved second place finish in the Popeye’s Fall Classic. With Phil Heath, a five-time Mr. Olympia, in the building to give encouragement to more than 260 competitors, it was McGraw finishing second out of 15 others in his event, Men’s Physique. “It feels great to finish so well,” McGraw said. “Men’s Physique is such a tough competition, there’s lots of little things that judges are looking for and where you feel you might be strong in one area, judges could be looking at that same area in a completely different way than you are.” “It’s just one of those things where you just never know. But it was a lot of fun, everyone looked real good and I’m real proud of finishing so well.” McGraw moved to Qualicum Beach a few years ago from Alberta, where he was a personal trainer while working in the tar sands. Having spent time flying back and forth between Vancouver and his job in Alberta, McGraw decided to check out this place his mother kept telling him about. “She kept telling me about Qualicum Beach,” McGraw said. “She told me I’d probably love it here, so I had to check it our for

The Save–On–Foods Oceanside Generals are on a bit of a roll, winning two out of three games last week and four of their last seven games in November. Coming off a 6-3 loss to the Westshore Wolves Saturday night, where they were out-shot 53-19, the Gens needed to rebound against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Sunday afternoon. Scoring four goals in the first period, the Gens would go on to add two more, beating the Glacier Kings 6–4. “I think it was a wake up call for us,” assistant coach Jerry Bickerton said. “We came in to Saturday night’s game against Westshore feeling pretty confi-

dent, I’ll say a little over confident, and we paid for it as a team.” “I told the boys after that game that you can’t get too low when you lose or too high when you win, you’ve got to find that balance somewhere in the middle. They took that message to heart and we gave a much better effort against Comox.” Forward Ethan Sundstrum continued his recent productive play, putting up three points (two goals, one assist) in the win on Sunday. That pushes his total 13 points in the last seven games. Mathieu Jallabert has also been on a hot streak, racking up four assists in the win against Comox Valley. He’s up to 11 points (one goal, 10 assists) in his last seven as well.

Goaltender Matt Henwood, 16, earned both wins this week for the Gens in net, pushing his record to 4-2 on the season. Henwood, who also notched an assist Sunday against the Glacier Kings, has been in net for the Gen’s last four wins. “He’s had the hot hand for us,” Bickerton said. “He’s playing with a ton of confidence in himself and his abilities, he’s out challenging shots and putting rebounds in the corners and that’s what you need with a goalie.” “We’ve needed him in the games he’s started and he’s been there for us. We keep wondering when that streak will end but it doesn’t seem to be, he’s been playing very well for us.”

Henwood said he’s just taking it one game at a time. “It’s been fun out there,” he said. “I’m a pretty easy going guy and I like to keep things loose, have fun on the ice and in the dressing room.” “I try to stay relaxed heading into a game and I think that’s helped me really prepare for games. I’m feeling pretty good with how I’ve been playing and I’m just hoping I can keep it up going forward.” The Generals are back in action against the Saanich Braves this Wednesday in Saanich, then they return home to host the Nanaimo Buccaneers 7 p.m. Saturday in Howie Meeker Arena at Oceanside Place.

The Oceanside Midget Generals got a quick start to their season, going unbeaten in their first six league games and looking strong as they head towards the Christmas break. With four wins and two ties in their six league games, the tier two Gens are sitting at the top of their league early in the season. Forward Austin Hykaway leads the way for the team with 24 points (15 goals, nine assists) this season. “They’ve been playing well,” said head coach Matt Woods. “We’ve been playing well in league play and have been up and down in our tournaments we’ve been in. But things are looking good for us so far, I’m happy with the way we’ve played and it’s been the best start we’ve had with this team in the last three years.” Off the ice, the Midget Gens will be holding

Qualicum Beach’s Brayden Eriksen is back on the golf course once again in Spain, this time for The San Roque Club tournament at Finca Cortesin Golf Club. Eriksen, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Monday, November 30, has been golfing in the Gecko Tour in Spain since the end of October, currently sits in ninth place on the Gecko Golf Tour’s Order of Merit. The team will be stationed at the Parksville Bottle Depot, as well as being out and about in trucks going door to door to see what they can collect. “It’s great to be doing this as a team,” Woods said. “It helps the boys get that sense of community and allows them to give back. The SOS has been very helpful with local sports for a number of years and we felt it was the best thing for us to try and give back to them with this bottle drive. So we’ll be all over the community, trying to raise as much as we can.” You can drop off your bottles between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, at the Parksville Bottle Depot or you can e-mail rsbrend@gmail.com with your address and they will come pick up your empties.

The back nine wasn’t as friendly, as Eriksen had three bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey for a total of seven over par in his opening round. He’s not alone however, as only 10 of the 74 golfers in the field finished even or better. He’ll look to turn things around today and make the cut at The San Roque Club.
