Music remains an art form that evokes strong emotions and holds a special place in many a listener’s heart. The nearly universal appeal of music makes it a great gift come the holiday season, when shoppers may not always know what to buy a loved one. The following are a few gift ideas that are sure to have your favourite music fan singing your praises this holiday season. “The albums are going to be the hottest items this year because there are some big ones,” said Leanne Jakubeit, owner of Grooveyard in Penticton. “Adele is probably going to be the top seller through to Christmas but there will be other big albums such as Tracey Chapman’s Greatest Hits, Jann Arden has a Christmas album out that has been hard to keep in stock. As well Johnny Reid and Don Henley have new albums,” Jakubeit said besides albums, they also have box sets of TV series or movies which are always popular during Christmas. Those can be ordered right up until the week before Christmas. “I think one of the biggest things will be the vinyl classics. We have had tons of phone calls about new albums on vinyl as well. We also have these awesome portable turntables that come in all different colours that have been very popular,” said Jakubeit.

Brewing up gift ideas Western News Staff
Any seasoned craft-beer enthusiast knows that hops are one of the most important ingredients in brewing beer. The use of fresh local hops by the burgeoning craft-beer industry is a fast growing trend. The Tin Whistle Brewing Company in Penticton is proud to have been one of the first B.C. breweries to use ‘fresh’ or ‘wet’ hops in their seasonal ales. This year’s limited-edition Penticton Harvest Honey Ale is proof that the hops make all of the difference. The ale uses cascade hops that had to be harvested in the middle of the night and rushed to the brewery. The beer boasts a refreshing citrus aroma and flavour. The wildflower honey (from Keremeos) adds to the overall flavour, providing the ale with a bright and crisp finish. “Each year I try to do something different than other years. This year, I changed the honey in the Harvest Honey Ale to the same dark caramelized honey that is used to brew the Killer Bee Porter. The honey is very prominent in the beer’s flavour. It is what separates it from other fresh

Grab bags are a staple of this season of giving, and the following are a few dos and don’ts to ensure participation in gift exchanges is fun and friendly for all involved. DO set a gift amount limit. Holiday grab bags are more about having fun and exchanging a little something with friends and family members than walking away with amazing prizes. Establish a spending limit so everyone receives a gift of roughly the same value and no one feels slighted or left out. DON’T exceed the spending limit. It can be tempting to spend more to make your gift appear more impressive. But overspending defeats the purpose of the gift exchange. Grab bags typically are anonymous, so being overly generous will not win you any style points. DO make it a game. Tossing gifts in a bag only to have others reach in and grab one is certainly effective. But the concept can be even more fun if you make a game out of it. Try passing wrapped gifts around in a circle to a holiday song. When the music stops, the gift you are holding is the one you open. Experiment with your own variations to make gift exchanges more fun. DON’T let anyone see the gift you bring. The idea is to keep things as secretive so as not to sway the selection of presents. DO ensure your gift is unisex. Unless you know specifically that only men or women will be opening the presents, select items that will appeal to both genders. Food, gift cards, music, or home staples make great grab bag gifts. DON’T forget to consider ages as well. Gift exchanges may include both children and adults, so include gifts that appeal to all ages when necessary. When the exchange

Tips for visiting Santa for the first time Submitted
Christmastime is filled with many different traditions. Many people decorate their homes with Christmas trees, and songs are sung with family members who come from near and far to share gifts and companionship. Families with young children often make visiting Santa Claus a part of their annual traditions. During the holiday season, Santa can be found taking up residence in department stores and malls across the country. Thousands of children and their parents will wait in line to get some face time with jolly old St. Nick. The following are a handful of ways to make kids’ visits with Santa even more pleasant. • Do a test run. If your child has not taken a photo with Santa before, he or she may be frightened and the result will be a poor photograph. The beard and the red coat coupled with the fact that kids are sitting on a stranger’s lap can be terrifying for youngsters. Acclimate your child to the experience by visiting the mall to see Santa and become familiar with what he looks like and how he acts. It may take a couple of visits before your child is ready to wait in line for the real visit. • Go off-peak. Visit Santa when the store just opens or when lines are not as long, such as during school hours or dinner time.
This should cut down on the wait and create a less tense experience. Confirm visiting hours so you don’t arrive only to find he’s out to lunch or feeding his reindeer. Do not schedule anything after the Santa visit, so you don’t feel rushed. • Dress comfortably. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing so neither you nor the kids will be uncomfortable. The goal is to look nice for the photo, but not at the expense of the children’s comfort level. And while you should be comfortable as well, be sure to look presentable, in the event you have to hop into the photo if that’s the only way your son or daughter will tolerate the experience. • Pack some supplies. Bring snacks and drinks for the kids so hunger does not make them antsy. Bring along a change of clothes in case someone spills food or spits up before your turn. • Get Santa recommendations. Ask friends and neighbors which Santas they visit. Many stores will have a Santa on hand, but not every Santa is as adept at handling children. You want someone who is used to making children feel welcome and comfortable. Above all, try to have a good time and don’t expect perfection. Sometimes the best Santa-visit moments are the ones that are unrehearsed.
