All eyes are on Paris in the wake of a series of horrific explosions and shootings killing more than 120 people in the French capital. Worldwide, “Peace For Paris” started trending on social media networks last weekend. Many international landmarks, including Toronto’s CN Tower, lit up in blue, red and white — the colours of the French flag — after Friday night’s deadly attacks. “Terrifying,” said Qualicum Beach’s Deborah Grey, former chair of the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC). “It’s scary,” she told The NEWS from her Qualicum Beach home. “I’ve done a fair bit of security work and it makes you very nervous… It was like 911 — what’s going to happen next?” Grey retired from her position with SIRC earlier this year, where she was in charge of the committee overseeing Canada’s spy service, CSIS. “We made sure CSIS was following the law,” she said. “And I have nothing but utmost respect for CSIS, they work very hard and are very busy.” MP Gord Johns called the attacks “an absolute tragedy” vowing to stand in solidarity with Paris and the people of France. “It’s devastating,” Johns told The NEWS from Ottawa Saturday. “Like all Canadians and people across the world, my heart goes out to the people of France. We will certainly be watching very closely.” Premier Christy Clark issued a statement Friday saying she was “shocked and sickened” by the tragic series of events. “For centuries, France has been a beacon of light and example for the world, and remains one of our closest friends and allies.” See CANADA STANDS WITH FRANCE, page A6

New Democrat MP Gord Johns was officially sworn into office Saturday afternoon in Ottawa, where he was appointed to serve as the critic for small business and tourism in the NDP shadow cabinet. “It was pretty cool to be honest,” Johns told The NEWS from Ottawa Saturday, hours after being sworn in. “It was really exciting to partake in history, signing in the book along with
every other Member of Parliament since the beginning of Confederation. What an honour to join the likes of my predecessors.” Johns, who represents the Courtenay-Alberni riding that includes Parksville Qualicum Beach, said he’s been on the go since he was elected to office Oct. 19 with 38.1 per cent of the popular vote. “It’s been extremely busy and certainly it’s a big adjustment,” he said. “It feels like it’s still at the pace of
the campaign.” But Johns has hit the ground running. “We had the tragedy in Tofino literally the first week in and right away I went back to the West Coast to support the community so it’s been a mixed bag.” During the last few weeks, Johns has been through orientation, which he describes as “boot camp for MPs” where he learned the ropes of everything from finances to human resources to security. Mayor Marc Lefebvre said he is counting on the fact Parksville residents heading to the referendum voting places this week understand the importance of where they mark their ‘X’. Parksville residents are being asked Saturday — advance voting is also available Wednesday — to give the city permission to borrow $5.6 million to help pay for its part of a $28.3 million water treatment facility. “I’m really counting on the fact this is extremely important for our long-term supply of potable water and I’m counting on people understanding that,” Lefebvre said last week. “I’m optimistic it’s going to pass.” Lefebvre said the city has reached out to community groups and organizations throughout this process and “they definitely all get it.” He also said he knows there are people in the city who believe there are other options. “There’s no doubt there are some people who think there is a better way,” said the mayor. “There’s not a better way and there won’t be a better way for a long time.” Island Health has ordered all surface water (from rivers, for example) headed to homes must be treated in a specific fashion by Dec. 31,
2016. Parksville gets about 50 per cent of its water from the Englishman River. If voters reject this proposal on Saturday, the mayor said the city will be “required to do it anyway.” City officials have said they have been told by Island Health an extension could be granted the city if the referendum passes and Island Health sees the city is taking steps (construction of the plant) to treat its water to the health authority’s standards. It’s unclear what would happen if the referendum fails. “I’m sure 12,000 people in Parksville aren’t going to want to boil their water when they get up in the morning to make their coffee,” said the mayor. The mayor also said he believes the laws governing municipalities should be changed by the province to reflect that some borrowing — for a potable water project, for example — should not require a referendum. Assent Voting day — that’s what this referendum is officially called — is Saturday, Nov. 21. Parksville residents can vote at either the Parksville Community and Conference Centre (PCCC) or the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church on Pym Street that day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The last advance poll is at the PCCC only from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The City is asking residents to approve a bylaw to authorize borrowing of up to $5.6 million to construct a new in-river intake , water treatment plant to comply with new water regulatory treatment standards and transmission supply mains to homes and businesses.

Mid-Islanders golf for prostate cancer awareness The Island Prostate Centre in Victoria is the beneficiary of two Parksville Qualicum Beach area tournaments J.R. RaRdon reporter@pqbnews.com
Located on a prominent corner a few blocks from Victoria’s Royal Jubilee Hospital, the Island Prostate Centre regularly gets walk-in traffic asking what they do. Until Parksville’s George Kenno arrived two years ago, however, the centre hadn’t seen six per cent of its annual funding stroll through its doors. Following a chance visit to the centre while he was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, Kenno and three golfing buddies organized the Blue Tie Golf Day benefit tournament at Morningstar Golf Club just outside Parksville. In its first year, in 2014, it raised $11,500 for Island Prostate Centre. This summer, 100 golfers took part and brought in $24,500 more. “I’ve been with the prostate centre for 13 years and we’ve never seen a situation like this,” said Leanne Kopp, executive director. “We’ll hear from people who tell us, ‘Oh, we should do something to help,’ then we never hear from them again. George walked the talk. We’re very fortunate to have a friendship and a relationship with George.” The month of November has been given over to issues of men’s health, sparked by the “Movember” campaign of growing moustaches to raise awareness of and, ideally, funding for prostate cancer. Kenno is attempting a moustache this month — “a little, stubby thing,” he said — but his major contribution takes place in late summer, through the tournament he organizes with Steve Boyle, fellow prostate cancer survivor Mitch Freko and Larry Kostyk. Kenno, now 67, was diagnosed with

prostate cancer in late 2013. With his newfound awareness and Movember getting stared, he gathered 15 friends for a mini golf tournament. Each player chipped in $100, and the $1,600 was forwarded to the Canadian Cancer Society. But when he travelled to Victoria to begin radiation treatment in January of 2014, he found himself walking from his rental condo to the hospital past the Island Prostate Centre. “I didn’t really know about them, but I walked by all the time,” Kenno said. “At the end of my two months (of treatment) I decided to drop in.” Peppering staff with questions, Kenno was introduced to Koop and learned the
centre, which provides support services, resources and information, received no government funding. Recently retired from a career in forestry and construction management, Kenno had time on his hands and a desire to give back. He began plotting the full-fledged tournament. “Our tournament isn’t part of the international Movember campaign,” he said. “During this month money flies all over the place. But seeing this little outfit in Victoria, they needed our help. They’re trying to expand knowledge and education of prostate cancer.” After the mini-tournament in December, 2013, Kenno realized he would need
to aim for a summer event if he hoped to draw his 100-plus golfer goal. There is an actual Movember golf tourney in the area that also benefits the centre. In 2011, the Bull Moose Classic, a cold-weather men’s tournament that had been held for decades at Eaglecrest Golf Club, began collecting for prostate cancer. It has been renamed the Bull Moose Movember Classic and has raised $2,500 to $4,000 for the centre. “We sell out pretty much every year, and it’s selling out earlier,” said Paul Kim, general manager at Eaglecrest. “The word is out; we’ve kind of taken it to the next level.” Kim said former pro shop manager Brendan Burns saw the opportunity for the men’s tournament to play off the Movember theme, as the Bull Moose was typically held in late November, usually the weekend before the Grey Cup. “The moustaches are coming in pretty good by the time the tournament happens,” he said with a laugh. “We just decided to have a cause for it, not just a good time.” The Island Prostate Centre is thankful for the mid-Island’s contributions. With an operating budget of approximately $400,000 annually, Koop noted the almost $30,000 contribution from the Blue Tie and Bull Moose events make a substantial impact. “That’s huge for us,” said Koop, who attends Blue Tie each summer to address and thank the players. “When you see a small, grassroots organization come through like this, it’s just amazing.” The 2015 Bull Moose Movember Classic will be played this Saturday, Nov. 21. The 2016 Blue Tie Golf Day is Aug. 27.

A local society invites the public to a meeting about the Regional District of Nanaimo board’s plan to potentially develop a regional water governance model. The Arrowsmith Watersheds Coalition Society (AWCS) is hosting a meeting at 7 p.m., tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 18) at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre to discuss similar experiences in Cowichan and hear from guest speaker, environmental consultant Christopher Stephens, said AWCS Treasurer Michael Jessen. As a participating group, AWCS members took part in a Vancouver Island Watershed Coalition meeting in October to hear from Cowichan Watershed Board co-chair, Mayor Jon Lefebure.
“AWCS is supportive of the position taken on preparing such a model, but recognizes the need for stakeholder consultation and involvement of First Nations,” Jessen said in a news release, adding they “have concerns about the powers that may or may not be included in a proposed governance model.” “In these early days of the work on this project the RDN will probably create terms of reference to guide staff in their research and drafting of a watershed governance model. AWCS hopes to contribute to the drafting of the terms of reference and to present some initial ideas on an appropriate model for the RDN and its municipalities.” Jessen and fellow AWCS director Paul Grinder will report on the mayor’s presentation, Stephens will present a brief report on his recent surveys of local wetlands, followed by a roundtable discussion to prepare suggestions for RDN staff and the AWCS’s annual general meeting.

Some people get into the Christmas spirit by singing traditional holiday songs, others enjoy the sweet scent of baking, and some find joy in decorating their homes. But for the 16 SOS volunteers taking on the role of Christmas Co-Chairs in the SOS Caring for Kids at Christmas Program this year, it’s giving back that warms their hearts. “It’s fun, it’s really a great way to celebrate Christmas,” said Christmas Co-Chair Carol Round. Joan Bentley, a cochair who has been volunteering for the program on and off for 23 years, agrees. “It’s very rewarding when you know you’ve helped somebody,” she said. “For some people, it has made their Christmas.” The SOS Caring for Kids at Christmas program ensures every local child and youth find a special gift under the tree, and that adults can enjoy a meaningful meal over the holidays, with dignity. Round, who has been volunteering with the program for 10 years, remembers a young woman who came in to choose a gift for each of her four children, and decided on a pair of socks for her teenager. “I said to her, ‘Oh that’s not very much,’ and she said, ‘It is to me.’ That was humbling.” Bentley said she was asked to help out with the SOS Christmas program about 23 years ago, and she enjoyed it so much that she has come back a number of times. Over the years she has volunteered as an elf in the program, assisting low income parents and grandparents choose gifts for their children, and she has helped set up the hospitality room, where parents wait patiently for their turn to enter the SOS Toy Shop, among other roles. “It’s just such lovely people and it’s a nice way to give back to the community.” Heather Strutynski has been volunteering with the program for four years. She heard about the volunteer opportunity at a Newcomer’s Club meeting. She said she en-

joys the people she volunteers with and the clients who use the program. “They are all very appreciative of what we’re doing for the community. Sometimes there’s a few teary-eyed moments.” Like the time a couple of years ago when a resident who was new to the country came through the program, she said. Although the co-chairs said it was okay to pick out a few items for her children, she only took one item. Another heart-warming moment occurred when a past client of the program brought in a number of hand-made wreaths to give out to clients, Strutynski explained. Seeing all the gifts donated by community members is also very inspiring, the cochairs explained. “The generosity of this community is amazing,” said Round. “We’ve got a wonderful community.” Join our caring community and help us ensure all the needs of our residents are met this Christmas. Christmas parents
F
or some in Parksville Qualicum Beach, the very word Christmas causes stress and a feeling of helplessness and woe. Who doesn’t want their children to enjoy the magic of a present or two? Who doesn’t want to sit around a table with family and or friends — with or without a gaudy sweater — and enjoy a festive meal? For some in our region, these things just aren’t possible. Keeping the electricity on and basic food in the house is a daily struggle. A turkey with all the fixings? Forget about it. A video game system under the tree? Not likely — the television barely works and the computer is about 20 years old and struggles to send basic e-mails. While it’s not a good scenario for the children, we ask you to consider the parents, too. The not-good-enough feeling that pushes against them every day is magnified at Christmas. Yes, there are people who squander their opportunities. There are those who would rather collect some measly government cheque each month than work. There are those — despite their good health and relative youth — who scoff at the idea of working a couple of minimum wage jobs, accepting handouts instead. There are those who work the system for as much taxpayer money they can squeeze out of the government — in fact, they see that as their job. There are people some might consider unworthy of our help at Christmas because they don’t seem to want to help themselves. However, we cannot let this dampen our spirit to help those who are truly needy. And there are many in our region. Let organizations like the Society of Organized Services, the school district and the Salvation Army sort out who is truly needy and who is not. In fact, they are pretty good at this job. They ask the questions and collect information from those seeking assistance. Do they err on the side of helping, rather than investigating? Yes, but these organizations come from a caring place, so we should expect and welcome their liberal attitude regarding who gets help. Remembrance Day has just passed, but our paper has already been telling stories, providing information, about the needy and how the more fortunate among us can help. Think of the children this Christmas, but think of their parents, too. — Editorial by John Harding

A recent article in the Globe and Mail describing life in Qualicum Beach did not, I believe, reflect the true picture. The word ‘grey’ is used to suggest that the residents are quietly shuffling along and that their presence dominates the community. Not so at all. This is a vibrant place to live. Just be here for Fire and Ice in early May, the Fathers Day car show or Halloween. On the streets we see all ages mingling and enjoying the town atmosphere. They have live theatre, curling, an excellent swimming pool and civic centre. There’s lawn bowling with year-round facilities, also a very active seniors’ centre where one’s age is not a big deal. We have a very proactive and dedicated town council, a lovely beach and walkways. As well as all this there is good shopping with actual store fronts and a year-round farmers’ market. There’s even a roundabout. So why live anywhere else? And do we want to give those ‘easterners’ the ‘real goods’ on life here? Roy Jones Qualicum Beach

Homelessness is a complex and challenging issue. Firstly, it is difficult to respond to a fabricated, fictional story, such as John Harding’s editorial on Nov. 5. But, what I can do is share facts on homelessness that are based on research, implementation and the hard work our government and community partners are doing to tackle the issue here and across the province. While it may not be known widely, through my constituency office we have successfully helped several homeless individuals and families who were living in our parks and campgrounds, or fleeing an abusive relationship, or were under threat of becoming homeless. Finding appropriate housing, accessing income assistance, addressing medical issues, sharing direction for employment opportunities and connecting with the school district, counselling services and food resources just scratch the surface of how I help my constituents access the resources available to them. In Parksville and Qualicum Beach, our government invested more than $1.3 million in 2014/15 alone to provide subsidized housing and rent supplements for more than 520 households. During the same one year peri-
od, we invested $27,000 in emergency shelter and housing for the homeless in the region. That local funding is just part of the $213 million provided last year to support more than 13,200 emergency shelter spaces across B.C., as well as subsidized units and rent supplements for people who were homeless. Our efforts are making a difference. Today we have more than twice as many provincially subsidized housing units, rent supplements and shelter spaces as we did in 2006. These are crucial resources to help the homeless, as well as those who are at risk of homelessness. No one is denying more work must be done. We will build on the hard work that has already been accomplished and continue to partner with non-profit groups, municipalities and the private sector to help provide housing and other supports to people in need. immigrate in haste In the early 1960’s I was the deputy officer in charge of our immigration office in Rome, Italy. We were then issuing about 24 to 25 thousand person visas a year. I had two responsibilities: ensure the processing went smoothly and to be the final reviewer in cases where it was decided to refuse an applicant, including reasons for criminal activity. It took 12 months to process that number of individuals paying attention to the issue of law, health and security. I cannot conceive how we can, in six short weeks, do the same unless we ignore the law and our own interests. It is plainly impossible. Immigration under our constitution is a responsibility shared with the provinces. Who and how will we decide the distribution of the refugees? More importantly how will the extra pressure and costs on our overloaded provincial health and education systems be handled? How will those extra costs be met? Will it be by the imposition of federal or provincial taxes? In either case the taxpayer remains the same — the citizen. Such is the political illiteracy of Canadians
that a delusional election promise now invites major problems for Canadians. Security is important. Look at France today and the price it is paying for offering a “welcoming” society without settling tough questions beforehand. Immigrate in haste, repent at leisure. nestoR e. harper: real leader I guess you could say the enemies of Stephen Harper won in their objective to get rid of him, but you really have to wonder if this is a win for Canada in the long term. Justin Trudeau ran a very good campaign and is deserving of his win, yet you get the feeling we have lost more than a good prime minister. Their are a number of significant voices that would say Canada’s loss is also the loss of the free world. There are more than a few who regarded Harper as the real leader of the free world in the absence of strong American foreign policy under the watch of Barak Obama. Harper was serious about fighting terrorism, a champion of free trade, supported the Jewish State and was outspoken in his opposition to Vladimar Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine. Under Harper’s leadership, Canada was the only G7 state to come through the last economic downturn in relatively good shape, taxes and crime rates were kept low, illegal immigration was curtailed and our military’s morale was rebuilt. Negotiating and diplomacy have their place, but Harper believed that action and deeds trump empty promises and rhetoric. He was a middle class family man that ordinary Canadians could readily identify with and a formidable leader whose honesty earned him the respect of world leaders and those who opposed him. He vigorously and courageously defended individual rights, was a great friend of the family, promoted both freedoms and responsibilities and upheld true Canadian values. There are those who would try and paint the Harper era in dark hues of negativity, but honesty and fairness demand credit where credit is due. Harper gave us 10 good years of stable government, moral leadership and prudent economic guidance in a world of economic instability. He was a true statesman the likes of which we may not see for some time.

Chambers of commerce need to shift their focus and concentrate more on services that will help their members grow and thrive, Jon Garson told a crowd in Parksville on Thursday night. Garson, the new president and CEO of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, was the guest speaker at the Parksville chamber’s monthly dinner meeting last week at The Beach Club. He said the B.C. chamber and local chambers of commerce have done a good job with wider, more provincial issues like the success they have had urging the province to cut red tape and keep taxes low in comparison to other jurisdictions in Canada and North America. The B.C. Chamber of Com-
merce count 125 chambers representing 32,000 businesses as its members. “That easily makes us the broadest-based voice of business in the province,” said Garson. He said reductions in red tape at the provincial level and a tax regime that’s one of the most competitive in the world “would not have happened” without pressure on the provincial government from chambers of commerce. He also said other, on-theground issues like succession, training and export opportunities are coming more to the forefront for members. “Businesses are asking some harder questions these days,” said Garson. “If you want to grow your business, the chamber should be the place you go for help. We need to develop a range of new services to help business grow and create new jobs.” Before coming to Canada, Garson worked in various government ministries in the United Kingdom. He had been working on the policy side of the B.C. chamber for 10 years
before becoming president earlier this year and while he spoke about the need for chambers to do more detailed work for its members, he did seem most fired up when speaking about broader, province-wide policy concerns. He spoke of a “crisis of affordability” in B.C. and a shift in the message he believes the province is sending to the world when it — or First Nations — denies resource-based developments. “We are still hewers of wood and drawers of water,” said Garson. “But we are developing a culture of ‘no’ in B.C. which is fundamentally undermining our attractiveness to investment.” He pointed to the provincial sales tax as an impediment for investment, a cost that he said matters to big companies looking to come here. Garson also said he’s confident the B.C. chamber will be heard by the new federal Liberal government. “This is a government we know we can work with,” he said.

re you mysophobic? Donald Trump certainly is. So is the annoyingly manic TV bobblehead gameshow host Howie Mandel. The Trumpet, for all his brutish aggressiveness, would sooner say something humble than shake your hand. Mandel wouldn’t touch you at all. He greets guests on his TV show with fist bumps. Mysophobia. A pathological fear of germs. It’s also called verminophobia, bacillophobia and bacteriophobia. The most common manifestation is a repetitive washing of hands, and for mysophobics it can really get out of er, hand. In 2012, a woman in England wore socks on her hands (when she wasn’t washing them) and showered up to 20 hours a day. She died of dehydration and a skin infection. Who says the gods don’t have a sense of irony? That said, if you want to worry about germs, there’s enough raw material to go around. The only upside of visits to my doctor’s office used to be the chance to catch up on those rumpled copies of Maclean’s Magazine from the 1980’s. No more. During orientation, Johns said he also heard from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who encouraged MPs to work across party lines and hold government accountable. “Everything has a learning curve and this job is no different than any other job,” he said. “There’s a great deal of responsibility.” But because the Courtenay-Alberni riding is new as of this year, Johns said he doesn’t have constituency offices to take over. He said he’s currently in the midst of hiring staff and setting up constituency offices in the riding. While he said it’s too early to confirm, he said he’s hoping to set up offices in Parksville, Courtenay and the Alberni Valley. “Some colleagues have told me it’s taken six to nine months to set up their offices but we ex-
pect to be much quicker than that, we’re hoping to have offices set up by mid-February,” he said. Local emergency services are again joining forces to collect food and toys for the Salvation Army Food Bank’s big Christmas season. This week Quality Foods is distributing paper grocery bags in The NEWS (inside today’s paper) which can be filled for pick-up by local fire departments and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue (ASAR) this weekend (Nov. 21-22). While the Parksville and Qualicum Beach fire departments will be out both days, the Dashwood department and ASAR will only be out on Saturday, with ASAR concentrating on Chartwell. This is the 17th annual effort and they are hoping to top last year’s 23,300 pounds collected said organizer and Parksville firefighter Liz
Olson. They have collected over 100 tons over the years, plus thousands in cash. The collection comes at a crucial time for the Salvation Army food bank, which serves over 700 people at Christmas. “Any support that residents are able to give is appreciated,” Olson said. “Every little bit helps and will make the world of difference to many families this holiday season.” Organizers point out it is impossible for volunteers to get to every house, so people can bring any non-perishable food and/or new, unwrapped toys to the Parksville, Qualicum Beach or Dashwood fire halls or Salvation Army directly. Watch for the fire trucks with lights flashing, or if you will not be home, leave the full donation bags by your front door or carport. Cash donations can also be accepted, but make sure to give it to a volunteer directly. Call Olson at 250-248-3242, or your local organization for more information.

When Bruce and Rema Stroink of Errington want to attend a classical chamber concert, they don’t have to get dressed up and leave the house. They merely need to call their daughters into the living room. Kaleigh Stroink, 21, was just awarded a gold medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music for scoring the top mark in British Columbia in her Level 9 examination on harp. It is the fourth gold medal from the Royal Conservatory for Stroink, who has also completed her Level 9 exam on piano. Her sister Hannah, 18, is a double threat on piano and violin. She has already completed Level 10, the Royal Conservatory’s highest level before students move on to the professional certification program for teaching or performance, on piano. And she has completed Level 8 on violin and is preparing for her next exams. Youngest sister Sarah, 16, is

also an accomplished piano player who plans to continue through Level 10. And she very nearly added a second instrument of her own when she began looking into the cello a few years ago.
“I was so disappointed when she said, ‘Mom, I’ve decided not to play the cello because lessons are so expensive and it costs so much money to buy one,’” said Rema. “I was sort of heartbroken because you don’t
want them to lose out because of money. That would have been a beautiful combination, having the cello and violin and harp.” The Stroink sisters have excelled in music studies and performance while being home-
schooled. They have learned from a series of teachers over the years, beginning with Rema, who had just enough piano training to get them started with beginner lessons when Kaleigh was seven and Hannah five. There were some lean times when Bruce was transitioning from working as a heavy equipment operator to starting his own business, Rema said. Sarah took a year off from piano lessons and Kaleigh took a hiatus from the harp as the family tightened its collective belts. But music has remained a priority, and the girls were soon back at their studies. “I’ve had parents ask me, ‘How do you get kids to do lessons so long?’” she said. “Well, it’s in their life. And it’s been valued in the family; my parents were so faithful attending every recital until they no longer could.” Even while their primary focus has been on instruction through private teachers and the Royal Conservatory of music, the sisters have been prolific performers. Kaleigh will play at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo on Dec. 12 and at Milner Gardens, Dec. 19. See SISTER EXCEL, page A32

Artisans from throughout the region will descend on Qualicum Beach Nov. 20-22 for the Original Village Christmas Arts Faire at Qualicum Beach Community Hall. Hosted and organized
by the artists and crafters, the exhibition and sale of handcrafted works has been held here since 1979, providing the opportunity to take home a piece of Island culture. Meet the makers of torched and blown glass; leather, fibre and textiles; stone, pottery, wood, steel, bronze, copper, silver, pa-
per and mixed media. Top Vancouver Island artists scheduled to take part include Wendy Maurer, Ted Jolda, Armando Dos Santos, Lucinda Hepting, Del Mark, Larry and Dee Aguilar and other special guest artists. Entertainment will be provided by classical guitarist Fred Saliani.

A Cappella Plus to kick off season with cabaret show Nanaimo’s A Cappella Plus choir will bring its fall concert, All Those Who Musik Love: Songs for the Heart, to Parksville Nov. 22 with a 7:30 p.m. performance at the Beach Club Resort’s Oceanic Ballroom. The group, which began 35 years ago as an eight-member a cappella choir, has grown into a 12-member choir featuring
six male and six female voices. The members are often accompanied by instruments, from a single pianist to a guitar trio to a chamber orchestra, which led to adding the “Plus” to the group name. This month’s concert will feature the piano accompaniment by the group’s new artistic director, Patricia Plumley, and percussion on some numbers
from Marc Beaulieu. A Cappella Plus has performed with Vancouver Island Symphony, the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra and the Pat Coleman trio, and has recorded two CDs of their music. Sunday’s concert will be performed cabaret style, with singers seated among the audience around candlelit tables. A cash
bar will be open before the performance and drinks and appetizers will be available as choir members mingle with the audience at intermission. “It’s a bit like a night club setting,” said Linda Dier, choir chair. “It’s quite informal and intimate; we really like to be up close and personal with our audience.”
Tickets are $23 and are available through pre-sale only — no tickets will be sold at the door. Women’s Institute played large role in young city JILL DAVIES NEWS Contributor
In Britain this September the Women’s Institute celebrated their centenary. It was established with the aim of revitalizing rural communities and encouraging more women to help produce food during the First World War. The first meeting took place in a small Welsh town bearing the unlikely name of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. However, the Women’s Institute in Canada was founded by Adelaide Hoodless, a remarkable country woman, born on an isolated farm in western Canada. Her public life began after the tragic death of her fourth child. Devastated by her loss, Adelaide, a widow, began campaigning to raise the level of education and support for women that they might better safeguard their families. In 1897 the first meeting of the Canadian Women’s Institute took place in Stoney Creek, Ontario. In 1915, twenty women met in Parksville at the inaugural meeting of Parksville WI. The initiative was led by Alice Ravenhill. Alice was born in England and emigrated to British Columbia in 1910. She was an educational pioneer and an enthusiastic advocate of the Women’s Institute. Many of Parksville’s original members were pioneer women who were central to the development of Parksville. Mrs. C.R. Tryon was a long-time member and president of the Institute for many years. During her presidency she attended several conferences overseas and while in Holland, visited war graves of Canadian soldiers who were buried there. For the next seventy years Parksville women members were instrumental in driving both social and patriotic activities within the community. During the Great War these included knitting gloves, socks and scarves for soldiers overseas, sending food parcels and raising funds to provide a moving picture machine for wounded servicemen. In addition the WI women immersed themselves in supporting the community by running the local library and starting a piano fund. The only hiatus in activity, as noted in the

WI minutes, was determined by the outbreak of the deadly ‘Spanish Flu’ pandemic when public meetings were prohibited. It was just after the end of the war that, under the umbrella of the Parksville WI, a group was initiated to raise funds to erect a cenotaph in memory of local lives lost between 1914-18. Later were added the names of those lost during WW2. With work under way by 1922, the decision was made to place the cenotaph at the end of what was to be named Memorial Avenue. The unveiling of the Cenotaph took place just a year later. Mrs Esther Tryon, then president of the WI, made it known that the WI would donate the elm trees that still border the avenue today. Mrs H.K. Harrison ordered the trees and Mr W. Bryce planted them. While local people and visitors alike enjoy the privileges of the Community Park many may not know that it was the Parksville WI that initiated the development of a park close to the beautiful Parksville seashore. There was some debate about which piece of property should be purchased and, although larger and more expensive than that originally suggested, it was the land proposed by Fred Shelly that was chosen. It was this foresight that allowed for a park with enough space
to build a sports field and community hall to be purchased, ensuring the pleasure and recreation of generations to come. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the efforts of the WI members continued to support the serving soldiers. War brides, far from their overseas homes, were made welcome. During and after the war years the Women’s Institute sustained their involvement with the community. Social evenings were organized including Halloween and Christmas parties for the children. Floats were entered in celebratory parades; fashion shows and plays were produced for the townsfolk. Mrs ‘Doctor’ Davis organized a Gilbert & Sullivan production each year and in the 1950’s two members, Marion Roscow and Ethel Tryon acted in a play written by the owner of the Island Hall Hotel, Eileen Allwood. Their play went on to win an award in a provincial drama festival. As years passed and the local culture changed with the times, it seemed that the Women’s Institute bore less relevance to the lives of women. No longer were there sufficient young women wanting to join. In 1986, the decision was made and a celebratory luncheon hosted to mark the end of Parksville WI. Let it not be forgotten however, at this time of remembrance, just how much the Women’s Institute has contributed to the Parksville we know today. Close to the highway, by the Visitor Centre you will find the Craig Heritage Museum now known as Parksville Museum & Archives. This living museum is home to historic buildings from Parkville’s early days together with a host of artifacts and archives. These reflect the daily lives, homes, schooling and worship of the early communities together with an insight into the trades and industry of the area. Members of the Island Soul Choir are no strangers to travel, but next spring they’ll really up their road game with a New Orleans performance tour. To help fund the trip, the choir invites the public to a Beer & Burger night at Smoke ’N Water Restaurant Wednesday, Nov. 18. A $20 ticket will get you a sandwich and suds, and the evening will include live music and a silent auction. The 140-member choir is based on the mid-Island and rehearses at Lantzville’s St. Philip-by-the-Sea Anglican Church. But its membership ranges from Port Hardy on the North Island to Victoria at its southern tip, and fourth-year musical director Karla Mundy travels from Vancouver to lead rehearsals. To accommodate its far-flung membership, Island Soul Choir only rehearses every three to four weeks. But the group has proven so popular that it maintains a consistent membership of more than 100 singers, and recently had to cap membership at 140. The choir will be limited to 54 members for the New Orleans tour, which will run from May 6-12, 2016. Applications will be accepted as part of the choir’s Spring 2016 registration. Kaleigh and Hannah have both performed with the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of Nanaimo. The sisters play weddings, funerals, birthdays and have performed for special events at Abakazi Gardens in Victoria, Milner Gardens in Qualicum Beach, the Chocolate Lily Festival in Duncan and the Mozaic Concert in Parksville. Kaleigh was actually interested in trying the harp as young as age three, according to her mother. After the family located a teacher, she tried the harp for a year beginning

at age five, but was too young to follow the theory requirements and set it aside until age 11, when her family bought her a harp. “To most people it’s a unique instrument, because they don’t see it that much,” Kaleigh said. “I really enjoy playing for people, and I think they enjoy hearing it.” Hannah’s interest in violin began shortly after she began piano lessons, though it would be several years before she started playing. “My first piano teacher taught both piano and violin,” Hannah said. “So I got to see her violin students and got

really intrigued by the instrument. At recitals, if there was a violin left out, I’d go and, like, touch it.” When her sisters were starting out on piano, Sarah was only three years old. She would not start playing until the age of six or seven. “I just remember going to a lot of recitals,” she said to laughter from her sisters. “I had to go to their piano lessons, and I would sit in the car and do schoolwork and wait for them. “It was a normal thing, to see people playing. Then when I started, it was, ‘Oh, this actually takes a lot of work.’”

Up-to-Date Vaccines – Pets travelling to the USA and Mexico are required to have documentation of current Rabies vaccination. Talk to your veterinarian about core vaccines that help protect your pets from other contagious diseases. 2. Parasite Control – Most destinations south of the border have parasites that are different and more dangerous than what is here on Vancouver Island. Fatal Heartworm and Tick-bourne diseases are preventable with safe medications that are available from your veterinarian. 3. Identification – Along with pet tags, additional permanent ID (tattoo or microchip) will help get your pet back if separated. Also include any of your pets medication or medical conditions on their tags. 4. Food – Pay attention to the rules for taking pet food across the border – and plan ahead. If you are flying… Before being able to board, most airlines will want to see a health certificate signed by a veterinarian. There are vertical cracks to most foundations we inspect, however they are usually hairline or minor and uniform in size from top to bottom. Typical minor cracks are not usually a structural concern but they can be a potential area of concern regarding seepage or water entry, and need to be monitored or repaired as required to avoid a wet crawlspace or basement. Larger cracks, especially rotational cracks (wider at the top than the bottom) could be an indicator of structural movement. Horizontal cracks in the foundation can also have more serious structural implications. Look for other evidence in the living space above such as crooked doors, cracks in the drywall at the corner of doors and windows, or sags in the structure itself to determine potential problems. Both of these types of cracks should be checked or evaluated by a structural specialist or engineer as soon as possible. A conclusive determination can only be offered after an onsite evaluation. About two years ago, while my wife was driving our car, she said to me “hmphy, shlrtle gobin fwumiic?” As usual I replied with my standard response to her mumbling,”Yes dear”. She wheeled a quick right onto a freeway on a very confusing and busy interchange. By the time we got off, turned around and found the address of the party we were heading for we were 30 minutes late for dinner. When I asked her why she did it she said “Well I asked you if I should take the freeway entrance and you said, Yes dear”. Shortly after the freeway incident, I heard about the experience of a man who said he was convinced that his wife was losing her hearing, so one day he decided to run a little test. While his wife was at the kitchen sink with her back to him he stepped into the kitchen and called her name in a normal tone, no response, he stepped closer and repeated the process, no response. Finally, he stepped directly behind her and called her name again, she turned and said “What are you doing? I’ve answered you twice. What do you want?” The man went to a hearing specialist the next day.

Well, it had to come eventually, and here it is. With the cooler weather come issues with our older windows. The solutions to the problems that crop up are as varied as the problems themselves. A draught could be caused by a hinge that has broken and is preventing the window from closing fully. Missing gasket material could also be the cause. Some gaskets are still available. If you have a sample piece we can usually identify what you need. Fogging or staining between the glass panes reduces the thermal properties of the sealed unit. This can be remedied by replacing the sealed unit (or thermal pane as they are also known). This is a good time to evaluate the overall condition of your windows to determine whether it is best to repair your existing windows or opt for new replacements. Sweating or condensation on your aluminum frames comes as a result of the warmer moisture laden air in your home coming into contact with your colder aluminum window frames or poorly insulated glass units. If you can reduce the humidity in your home, or ensure proper air flow at your windows by opening blinds or curtains, you may be able to reduce the amount of condensation on your windows. The biggest problem with the condensation is the mould that tends to thrive in the dampened window frames and trims. Vinyl windows can be installed in place of your aluminum windows to get rid of frame condensation. Joan Elizabeth HASTINGS (nee Ryan)
August 12, 1924 - November 10, 2015 It is with great sadness, I announce the peaceful passing of Joan Elizabeth Hastings at Stanford Place, Parksville, BC at the age of 91. Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Norman Shaw Hastings in 1996; her sister, Pat Morrison in 2007; and her brother, Bill Ryan in 2010. She is survived by her niece, Diane Birch of Gibsons, BC; brother-in-law, Rusty Morrrison, sister-in-law, Elinor Ryan, and niece, Andrea Ryan all of North Vancouver. Born in Winnipeg, the family moved to Vancouver when Joan was young and she grew up in Kitsilano. After marrying Norm in 1950, they spent many happy years in North Vancouver until they retired in Nanoose Bay. After Norm’s death, Joan moved to Parksville where she enjoyed her patio garden, travelling, and her many friends. Joan was a long time member of Knox United Church and remained active until fairly recently. She will be sadly missed by her sorority sisters in Masters Alpha Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. A very special thank you to her good friend, Bernice Hathaway. Thank you also to the Knox Community and the kind ladies from Oceanside Hospice. And a special thank you to all the staff at Stanford Place, both in Assisted Living and in the Bayview wing. Your kindness, caring, and compassion was so appreciated, and you all went above and beyond to help Joan in her final weeks and days. A Memorial Service, followed by a tea, will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, November 23, 2015 at Knox United Church, 345 North Pym Street in Parksville. Private burial. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Joan’s memory with a donation in her name to a charity of your choice. FRED NORMAN ROBERTS October 4, 1927 - November 6, 2015
Gary King November 25, 1954 – October 27, 2015
Gary Wayne King passed away on October 27, 2015 in Lions Gate Hospital surrounded by the love of his mother, brother and sisters. Gary was born in Whitehorse, Yukon to Frank and Agnes King, the sixth of eight children. Gary will be lovingly remembered by his mother Agnes King; brothers Pat, Bob (Robert) and Greg; sisters Fran Henney (Al), June Janits and Joy Ruttle; 14 nieces and nephews; and 16 great-nieces and nephews. Gary was predeceased by his father Frank King and brother Sunny (Frank) King Jr. Gary lived the majority of his life in Whitehorse, where from a young age he had a love for the outdoors, ďŹ shing and camping. He had a great appreciation for music, expressed his creativity through various crafts and enjoyed dabbling with gardening. Gary was involved in the Whitehorse Martial Arts community for many years. From 1995 to 2005 Gary lived in Parksville, British Columbia where he continued his love of ďŹ shing and expanded his gardening to include fruit trees and grape vines. Gary will be lovingly remembered as a caring, compassionate person who always wore a smile on his face. A Celebration of Life for Gary will be held in the late spring/early summer of 2016. In lieu of owers, Gary would prefer donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society with a speciďŹ c designation to Liver Research.
With great sadness we announce the passing of our step-father Fred on Friday, November 6, 2015 at his home in Parksville. Fred was born in England then shipped to Vancouver Island at a very young age as a British home child. He lived most of his life in Port Alberni and Parksville. Fred was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth �Betty� Cyr, step daughter Michelle, and step grandson, Sean. He is survived by his step children, Sharon Keene, Dennis (Jocelyn) Cyr, Rick (Gail) Cyr; step grandchildren, Shannon, Megan, Randy, Mike, Richard, Stewart, Honalee; and great grandchildren, Melissa, Gaige, Brookelynn, Makenzie, Evan, Bryden, Holtby. Fred spent all of his working years as a faller in the logging industry. After his retirement, he kept busy as a handyman and doing yard work. He loved fishing, hunting and was an avid gardener. We are so thankful for the love and care he received during his time at Arrowsmith Lodge. In keeping with Fred’s wishes there will be no service. John J. (Woody) Woodstock
Died Saturday, November 7th at Nanaimo Hospital, Barbara, his wife of 34 years at his side. Born November 25th 1921 in Glasgow, Scotland, he grew up in Toronto. Predeceased by his first wife, Mary and son Michael. Survived by his sister, Betty Holder, son Patrick (Mary), three stepchildren, Juanita (Heidi), Peter (Lisa) and Paul (Karan) Hanney, all of Barrie, Ontario. Woody joined the R.C.A.F. in 1942, was posted to operations in England in 1943 and served as a Wireless Operator with 343 Squadron during WW11, completing 33 missions over enemy territory in Halifax and Lancaster bombers and commissioned as Flying Officer in 1944. Upon his return to Canada, he attended Guelph Veterinary College, graduated in 1952 establishing a veterinary hospital in Barrie. He married Barbara Hanney in 1981, retiring to Parksville in 1983. He was an avid fly fisherman, gardener and enjoyed Country Western dancing and camping. He was a Life Member of Kerr Masonic Lodge in Barrie, an active Shriner, Past President of the Barrie Rotary Club and a Rotarian in Parksville. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Edmund’s Anglican Church, Parksville Friday, November 20th at 1:00pm, followed by a reception in the church hall. A memorial will be held in Barrie next Spring. Pesticide applications will complement existing and ongoing mechanical removal methods. Proposed duration of this pesticide use is from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2019. It’s a tale of two different seasons for the Ballenas Whalers football program, as the season has come to an end for the seniors, but the juniors rolled on to the second round. In Lower Mainland action Friday, the Whalers senior football team was in tough against the Langley Knights, looking to extend their season and advance to the second round of playoffs. It wasn’t in the cards for the team that battled through injuries all season, losing 41-19 to the Knights. The juniors, meanwhile, are off to the second round after a 28-15 win over Robert Bateman (Abbotsford). It was a tough season for the senior team, who went without starting running back Matt Price (knee injury), leaving a big gap in their offence. The team was banged up on defence as well, being without key players at various times throughout the season. “It was tough on them,” coach Jeremy Conn said. “But they battled as hard as they could.” “When you’re dealing with that many injuries as a team, it’s tough,” Conn said. “When it’s players that are so important to your lineup, it’s that much harder. I’m very impressed with

the way they played through the adversity and battled when they were down, very impressed. For the junior team, it’s a completely different story. Having home field advantage for the first two rounds of the playoffs (at Merle Logan Field in Nanaimo), the junior Whal-
ers took on the Robert Bateman Timberwolves in their first round match last week. Playing in wind and pouring rain coming down sideways at times, the Whalers were able to take advantage of some miscues from the Timberwolves and beat them 28-15.
“Any win is a good win,” Conn said. “It was nasty, we just wanted the game to be over at some points throughout but that’s playoff football.” “After they opened up the scoring off a mistake we made, we shut those mistakes down and played conservative to pre-
serve the win.” “We might not have gotten any style points for the win, but we got the win and that’s what we came there to do.” The Whalers were down 7-0 early but would score 22 unanswered points before the Timberwolves would get more. Connor Knutson caught a pass, which he took for 43 yards and a touchdown from QB Ben Robinson. Robinson also ran in for a touchdown of his own. Matt Giroux also found his way in to the end zone with a rushing touchdown. Giroux led the way for the Whalers on defence, piling up 10 tackles in the victory. The Whalers will now face the Holy Cross Crusaders — who they beat in week two by a score of 22-2 — this Friday at Merle Logan Field in Nanaimo, kickoff at 3:00 p.m. “Records are gone in the playoffs,” Conn said. “Previous results don’t matter anymore. Holy Cross is one of the most improved teams in the league and very well coached. They have size and athletes and they’re built for bad weather games.” “It’s going to be a battle but it’ll be all about practice, preparation and who wants it most.”

The Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals snapped their 11-game losing streak last Friday night, beating the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 6-5. Quinlan Moore scored his second goal in as many games for the Gens, with Troy MacTavish adding two, and Josh Harvey, Ethan Sundstrum and newcomer Tyler Graham rounding out the Gens’ scoring. Matt Henwood, 16, got the start in net, making 37 saves for his first win in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. “It felt good to finally win one,” forward Landon Dziadyk said. “We’ve been working hard as a team, had a lot of
close games that we should have won in that losing streak but it’s nice to finally get that monkey off our backs.” Still trying to find the right combination of players, the Gens traded away 20-year-old captain Chandler Bruyckere to the Nanaimo Buccaneers in exchange for Tyler Graham, 19, from Sechelt. Graham made an immediate impact, scoring a goal and an assist. “It’s tough when you lose your captain,” forward Tristan Sailor said. “We’re going to have to come together as a team, work hard and be the team that we know we can be. It just goes to show you that anyone can be traded at anytime, so we’ve got to not only work hard for each other but show we’ve got what it takes to
play here and contribute to this hockey team as well.” The Gens were without leading scorer Mathieu Jallabert, who was suspended two games for abuse of an official after the last game against the Campbell River Storm. He’ll be back for the second of three games this week. Thursday night, they travel to Nanaimo to take on Bruyckere and his new team (7:15 p.m.). Friday night, the Gens are home to host the Kerry Park Islanders (7:30 p.m.) at Howie Meeker Arena at Oceanside Place. Saturday night, the Storm is back in Parksville (7:30 p.m.). “We need to do the little things well,” forward Cam Nickerson said. “We’ve got to lay the body, put as many pucks
on net as we can and do what we can to play mistake free hockey. Limiting our mistakes and taking advantage of when the other team makes mistakes will help us out getting some more wins. If we can do the little things well, good things will come our way.” Teammate Tristan Sailor echoed Nickerson. “We’ve gotta keep the momentum,” he said. “We worked well last game but there’s room for improvement always.” “At the end of the day, it’s the team that works the hardest for 60 minutes that usually comes out the winner and that’s what we learned against Comox last week.”

Keeper Pam Richer backstopped Oceanside United to a big win over the first-place Cermaq Outlaws from Campbell River, beating them 1-0 in Mid Island Womans Soccer League action. The win now vaults Oceanside United to a tie with the Outlaws for first place in the league, both teams having 18 points on the season. With four games remaining on the schedule, it’s going to be a tight race to the finish to
see who will come away with first place in the regular season. Still pacing the way for Oceanside United is Richer, who’s been a force in net with five of the team’s six wins being shutouts. Emma Taylor still leads the way with eight goals on the season, with Rebecca Collins and Shelly Terpstra trailing her with three goals a piece. Oceanside United are in action this weekend against the Nanaimo Wheatys, with kickoff slated for noon Sunday, November 22.
