When Deirdre Dore left Nakusp on Nov. 1 she left as a finalist for the Writer’s Trust/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. She came home on Nov. 4 a winner. Dore was temporarily shocked when her name was announced. “I couldn’t even stand up for a second, I was so excited,” she said. “I was thrilled, overwhelmed, and humbled.” The Journey Prize was launched by a author James Michener. He was writing a novel called Journey, about an English lord’s doomed trek across Canada to get to the Klondike gold rush. During his research, Michener developed a warm spot for Canada, and donated all the royalties from the Canadian printing of the book to McClelland & Stewart, to create the Journey Prize. The prize is awarded for published short fiction in a Canadian literary magazine. The literary magazines choose which stories they want to send in. Dore’s short story, The Wise Baby, was one of 12 stories selected to be published in the Journey Prize Anthology. Of the 12 stories selected, three are chosen as finalists for the Journey Prize, and are asked to come to Toronto for the award ceremony. Dore said the whole process leading up to the awards ceremony is
long, but every stage is thrilling, especially being published in the anthology. “I’ve been reading them for years,” she said. “People study them in creative writing programs. Just to be included is really an honour.” Dore describes her short story. “It’s about a philosophy student, a woman, who is having trouble writing her thesis. She’s having boyfriend troubles, and she’s living in a leaky condo kind of place in Squamish. Next door to her is a needy couple with a baby who keep knocking on her door, wanting this, that, and the other thing, while she’s trying to come to terms with these existential concepts, these philosophical concepts of being, the concept of being with a capital B. In the meantime she’s thrust into this living being with a small b. It was kind of a juxtaposition of those two worlds.” Everything on the trip was paid for, from the flights to and from Toronto, to the hotel rooms. “They put us up in a really nice little boutique hotel, it was a really lovely place.” Dore did have some free time on her trip, and she decided to make the most of it. “The main thing I did was go to the Art Gallery in Ontario, they had a wonderful John Turner exhibit,” she said. “I just kind of walked around town and visited the Great Hall. They had some amazing heritage
buildings there. I did a little shopping, and drank a little wine.” While she had a great time, it was also nerve-wracking. If you win, you have to have a speech prepared, and you have to read it in front of literary giants. If you lose, you don’t have to read the speech, but you lost. Dore said it was like being on an emotional roller coaster ride. She did, however, find something, or rather someone, to help keep her calm. “Just before I sat down, I met Elsa Franklin, who was a long-time literary agent for Pierre Burton.” Burton asked who Dore was sitting with. Dore replied she wasn’t sitting with anyone, so Franklin invited her to sit with her group. Dore said Franklin essentially became her fanclub, cheering every time Dore’s photograph would come up in a set of revolving pictures. “She’d start cheering ‘Yay Deirdre’. It kind of helped to relax me a little bit, because I was so, so nervous.” Along with the Journey Award, Dore also received $10,000. She hasn’t decided exactly what she’s going to do with the money. She would like to earmark it for something special, and hasn’t ruled out travelling. “I love to travel. I’d like to go up to Haida Gwaii,”she said. “And of course, some of it will be spent just on living.”

Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) has installed birth chimes to celebrate the announcement of a new baby. The electronic wind chime heard across the overhead paging system launched Oct. 23 and since then has rang through the hospital about half a dozen times, including twice on one occasion by the proud parents of twins. KBRH is the second site to add the chimes after it was started at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops earlier this year. Other Interior Health sites, including Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, are in the process of implementing the chimes. “It was neat to know that it went throughout the hospital and notified people,” said new mom Alexandria Baxter. She and her partner Brian Taylor of Rossland just welcomed a baby boy into the world Nov. 2. Baby Taylor, weighing 6 lb 11oz and measuring 53 centimetres long, took his time to show his face but was well worth the wait. “The whole labour process was pretty long but that moment I heard him scream I was brought back into the present moment,” said Baxter. “It was a moment of clarity and relief.”
Sitting on the patient end was different for Baxter, who is a doctor at Riverside Family Medicine and is also part of the Family Obstetrical Clinic, which delivers babies at the Trail hospital. She has acquired a real-life understanding of birth, one that will likely help in future deliveries. The couple chimed in after baby Taylor was born, albeit 24 hours after, but it was still fun to hear the news ring through the hospital. Trish Thomson, KBRH manager of Maternal Child Services and the Inpatient Surgical Unit, was keen on the idea after hearing about the news out of Kamloops. “They remind everyone that the hospital is also a place of new life and joy, and they bring a sense of celebration,” she said. “When I am in another unit and the chimes ring, there has been cheering, and I hear ‘Yah, a new baby.’” The purpose of the chime is just that: to celebrate the common experience of birth throughout the hospital. This can be in stark contrast to the other messaging, such as urgent or emergency calls, and is a reminder that the hospital is also a place of beautiful beginnings. “It brings the whole hospital together in that moment in time,” Thomson added. “It is really exciting to see the positive reaction around the hospital to the chimes.”

The Family Action Network (FAN) held a grand opening of the first Easy Peezy family washroom on Friday in downtown Trail. Located at 1160 Cedar Ave. in the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) facility, the Easy Peezy initiative offers a clean, accessible family washroom that parents and caregivers can use without having to be a customer of the host location. “The idea behind the Easy Peezy initiative is to provide family washrooms in the downtown area of our local communities,” says FAN board member Lynn Proulx. “This something parents have been asking for.” Proulx was referring to a 2012 survey, when FAN asked more than 250 parents about services that would enhance the livability for families in the Lower Columbia region. One of the top responses was ‘More family washrooms,’ so as one of its five priority projects, FAN partnered with local businesses and organizations to establish a network of Easy Peezy family washrooms throughout the region. “FAN is working hard to have our region be recognized as the best place to raise a family,” Christy Anderson, FAN’s regional coordinator, told a roomful of parents and community partners during the opening. “The Easy Peezy sites offer a needed service for families with young children who are spending time in our downtowns.” Each Easy Peezy site will be marked with a decal on the door of hosting establishments. When a caregiver or parent sees the Easy Peezy logo, they can bring their children into the location and use the washroom without having to purchase an item.
Downtown Trail’s first Easy Peezy washroom, located at 1160 Cedar Ave., includes a comfort area with glider rocker, microwave, and ageappropriate toys for children to play while the parent diapers or feeds a child. “We understand that providing enhanced services for families in our downtowns benefits more than just the families themselves,” said Anderson. “Having washrooms available makes it easier for families to visit the businesses and organizations downtown. If they feel welcome, and there are easily accessed services, it’s likely that they will choose to spend their dollars there. The same goes for visiting families who may be passing through our communities.” The Easy Peezy amenity offers a change table and diaper pail in a tidy environment. Or, as in Trail’s CBAL site, the Easy Peezy Plus is available, and includes a private space with a comfortable chair for feeding as well as a microwave. Additional Easy Peezy sites are planned for the Trail, Rossland, Warfield and other Lower Columbia communities over the coming year. Castlegar’s water utility manager has been gaining recognition in the world of BC water
conservation recently. The Partnership for Water Sustainability in BC and Columbia Basin
Water Smart have both acknowledged Jesse Reel’s role in a peer-topeer training program
for water utility operators in articles on their websites. But Reel isn’t pre-
pared to take too much credit for the program, giving most of the credit for its success to Joe McGowan, public works manager for the City of Cranbrook. The peer-to-peer program started in winter 2013 and allows water utility operators to deliver and receive training in their communities without the cost of attending costly courses that are usually offered in the Okanagan or the Lower Mainland. Reel’s aim is to have Castlegar operators offer help to other communitites in the West Kootenays like MonSTANDARD FEATUREStrose, Nakusp or Genelle. He himself recently did peer-to-peer training at the Glade Irrigation District. put it back together and set it up. “[That] spurred some momentum out there and they did more maintenance on their water system in 18 months than they’d done in 20 years,” said Reel. The Columbia Basin Trust currently supports the peer-to-peer program, and now in its second year the program has started receiving support from the Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) who want to make peer-to-peer training a recognized training event. Heritage BC annual awards nominations now open Heritage BC is now accepting nominations for their 35th Annual Awards Program. Heritage BC’s Annual Awards Program recognizes the outstanding and significant achievements in heritage conservation of individuals, organizations, groups, businesses and government in communities across BC. This year Heritage BC’s awards will be presented in four categories: Heritage Conservation, Heritage Education and Awareness, Heritage Planning and Management, and the Ruby Nobbs Volunteer Award. There are also different levels for the awards categories: Outstanding Achievement, Honour, and Recognition. Heritage BC’s Awards recognize best practices and high standards in heritage conservation, based on the national Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. The awards also emphasize innovation and commitment to heritage conservation that also contributes to environmental, economic, social, and/ or cultural sustainability. “This is an opportunity to showcase the innovative and quality work in heritage restoration in BC,” says Kathryn Molloy, executive director of Heritage BC. “We are especially proud of the
addition of climate change mitigation and adaptation to this year’s criteria, offering opportunity for projects to showcase how heritage buildings can be models of energy efficiency and climate action.” Individuals, groups, organizations, businesses, government agencies, and other entities will be considered for a Heritage BC award, based on evaluation and selection criteria for each of the categories. Projects nominated for an award must have been completed within the past three calendar years. Heritage BC award winners receive a special framed certificate, acknowledgement on our website and in all of our publications. All awards are presented at the awards ceremony and gala, which takes place in Vancouver during Heritage Week in February 2016. Past award recipients from 2014 include the renovation of York Theatre in Vancouver, restoration of Central Elementary School in Kelowna, and the Hands on Heritage project completed by the Langley Heritage Society. Montrose councillor resigns BY SHERI REGNIER West Kootenay Advertiser
Montrose voters could be headed back to the polls in January following the resignation of Coun. Mark Reid. Reid handed in his letter of immediate withdrawal two weeks ago, citing outside commitments became too great to fulfill requirements of his role on the four-member council. With three years remaining in the municipal term, under the Local Government Act, the village is required to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy. Monday night council was the first reconvening of all members since the resignation, and the first order of business was to appoint a Chief Elections Officer (CEO) — a position accepted by Bryan Teasdale, Montrose’s chief administrative officer.
Once the CEO is officially in place, a general voting day must be scheduled on a Saturday, and within 80 days of the appointment. First, a notice of nomination has to be published, and that will begin Thursday and run for one week. The actual nomination period opens Dec. 1 and closes Dec. 11. If only one person steps forward, the position will be filled by acclamation. Conversely, if no one signs up, then a call for nominations must be repeated until someone steps up. However, if last year’s municipal election is any indication of interest, when seven residents ran for the four council seats, and two for mayor, Montrose voters could be casting ballots as early as Jan. 6. That Wednesday fulfills the required advanced voting opportunity, followed by General Voting Day on Jan. 16, and the winner announced by Jan. 18.
RDCK recycling changes panned The Regional District of Central Kootenay is getting an earful about recent changes to recycling in Nelson, Kaslo, Salmo and area — and dealing with full blue bags left at its transfer stations. Under the new system — which has already been in place in the RDCK’s west and east subregions for years — residents have to place recyclables in small openings in the bins, whereas before they were able to deposit the entire bag in one go. The same goes for cardboard. The regional district says the
move is expected to save about $200,000 per year and allow the material to be loaded into a truck with an on-board compacter, reducing the number of trips made to the processing facility in Castlegar. “In the old system we were hauling it uncompacted, taking many round trips to the waste facility,” said resource recovery manager Mike Morrison. “We could only transport one bin at a time.” Critics, however, say the move will make people less likely to re-
cycle at all. “If you want to recycle you have to put in a system that makes it convenient for them,” said local environmental consultant Michael Jessen, a former RDCK recycling coordinator. “When we go to drop it off we don’t want to stand there and shove it all through a little hole.” In the early going, transfer stations have been littered with full blue bags but Morrison expects these will disappear as people adjust to the new system.

Council balks at Wi-Fi in parks BILL METCALFE West Kootenay Advertiser Not so fast, Nelson city council told its management staff when it presented a proposal from Shaw Cable about public Wi-Fi at a council meeting last week. Shaw has offered to install its GoWi-Fi service in public places at no cost to the city. It’s a project that, were the city to undertake it on its own, would cost around $100,000 to operate, city manager Kevin Cormack said. The agreement with Shaw would be non-exclusive (other companies could offer the same service in the same locations) and the service would be open to everyone, not just Shaw customers. “Access to free public Wi-Fi is an increasing expectation of the public,” reads the staff recommendation. “Using Shaw to provide this service means that the city will incur neither capital costs to install the service nor ongoing costs to maintain the service. City resources will not be used to provide customer service and support. Public works (parks) have provided their full support for provision of free public Wi-Fi in the city parks.” According to the proposal, Wi-Fi would be installed in Gyro Park, Lakeside Park, and Cottonwood Falls Park and augment Wi-Fi already available in the library and youth centre. The plan also includes the Capitol Theatre and Touchstones, but the recommendation documents say these are “pending input.” Councillors Michael Dailly and Anna Purcell were skeptical. “Do we want to live in a world where you go to a park and everyone is on their computer?” Dailly asked. “I hear the frequencies are fairly low, but there are people sensitive to even the low band, so I’m reluctant to open this door in public space. We have places in the city set up to be social places and I find doing this is anti-social. We have to draw the line at parks.” “It might be free but the cost is us being a vehicle for marketing and commercial activity,” Purcell said. “I am reluctant to give my email address. It would be a deterrent to me. I am not afraid of Wi-Fi and would like to see Wi-Fi on the main street, something that is genuinely free and accessible with no strings attached.”
Councillor Valerie Warmington said she wanted to consult with other municipalities about their experience. She wondered about emissions and said council should look at what the Federation of Canadian Municipalities says about that. The materials given to council by Shaw state that “Shaw’s outdoor access points emit a similar RF energy to a cordless phone, a bar code scanner at the grocery store, or a baby monitor.” But emissions were not Warmington’s only concern. “The corporatization of the commons does not feel right to me,” she said. “It might be better to have our own, even though it would be more money and time to do so.” City manager Kevin Cormack pointed out many public spaces such as the Civic Theatre, Nelson and District Community Complex, and Capitol Theatre have corporate sponsors. Warmington responded that the Shaw sponsorship would be “coming with a cost. We have to give our email address. There is a different relationship.” Councillor Robin Cherbo had his doubts too. “I am opposed to having it in parks. They are a place of rest, not a place where you want to see everyone on their computers. And I have a problem with getting in bed with a corporation. I think we should stay away from that.” Cherbo wanted council to take more time to think about it, but his motion to do that was defeated. Mayor Deb Kozak said the deal would not mean the city would be endorsing Shaw, and, appearing to speak in favour of the proposal, said “I don’t think we should be monitoring what people do with their leisure time.” The motion to take on the project was defeated, with only Kozak and councillor Bob Adams voting in favour. Another motion was then put forward which passed with only Dailly opposed. It reads: “That staff provide a report with more information on free public Wi-Fi using Shaw GoWi-Fi as the service provider which will include: feedback from other municipalities using the service, public consultation using the city’s Facebook page, public Wi-fi at the Nelson Public Library, and public Wi-FI at the NDCC.”

Marblehead produced stone for notable buildings GREG NESTEROFF WEST KOOTEBAY ADVERTISER One hundred nineteenth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Marblehead, in the Lardeau Valley, takes its name from the huge marble quarry there. It was originally known as Leblanc (also spelled Lablanc, La Blanc, La Blanche and Le Blanche) after Alfred Leblanc (1853-1926), who by some accounts discovered the marble deposits with Jean Brochier. (Others say it was uncovered in 1899 when the CPR built its line through the area and that Ole Olsen of Lardo staked it.) Leblanc was born in Quebec and as of 1901 operated the Ferry Hotel at the first crossing of the Lardeau River between Lardo and Howser. The CPR added Le Blanche to its timetable by September 1907 and by 1909 the Canadian Marble Works was operating there. According to The Kootenaian of Jan. 28, 1909: “Near LeBlanc, on the Lardo branch, exists a huge quarry of the finest marble …” The place was renamed Marblehead later that year. The Winnipeg Tribune of Oct. 26, 1909 reported: “When a big diamond drill now on the way from Chicago arrives at the quarry at the Canadian Marble Works at Marblehead, BC in the course of a few days, everything will be ready for the thorough testing of one of the finest marble properties on the continent.” Milt Parent wrote in Circle of Silver that “Gilman Barrows Wilson, an American, was in charge of the quarry in 1910 … A job sent him to all the marble producing states and provinces for the Patch Manufacturing Co. On this journey he visited LeBlanc … and became so interested in its potential that he bought the site and called it Marblehead.” The earliest use of the name Marblehead, however, referred to a different site. The Kootenaian of Oct. 18, 1900 said: “The transfer of the Marblehead quarries, across the lake from Kaslo, to Ernest Mansfield, took place Wednesday.” Alfred Leblanc died near Howser and was buried in Kaslo. Marblehead’s name survives as a regional district transfer station and on the sign of Marblehead Automotive Service, an old cookhouse and recreation hall. The quarry itself, last operated in the late 1930s, remains an impressive sight. Its stone was used to build the Mormon temple at Cardston, Great West Life block in Winnipeg, and other note-
worthy edifices. In 1965, Marblehead was proposed as the name of a new post office at Meadow Creek. The director of postal services wrote: “Although the area in the immediate vicinity is known as Meadow Creek, it has been pointed out that the name would conflict with the existing post office of Meadow Lake, Sask.” The Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names, however, thought it would be more confusing to call a post office Marblehead that wasn’t actually at Marblehead, and pointed out other post offices existed across Canada at Meadow Portage, the Meadows, and Meadowvale without any problems. Canada Post then suggested the name Duncan Dam, but the committee rejected it, saying it would cause confusion with Duncan on Vancouver Island. Postal officials relented and the Meadow Creek post office opened in 1967. MAKINSONS LANDING Three Canadian places are named for the Makinson family, but they’re about as far away from each other as you can get. The earliest known mention of Makinsons Landing, 21 km southwest of Nakusp, is in the Slocan Mining Review of Jan. 24, 1907: “Jack Pratt left for Mackinson’s [sic] Landing again on Thursday, to join the lumberjacks.” It was named for local farmer Thomas Cochrane Makinson (1870 – fl. 1915), who was born in Makinson, Nfld., in turn named after George Makinson, probably Thomas’ father, who arrived there from Liverpool around 1863. Thomas married Margaret Tingley and they lived in Burton as of 1897 when their daughter Flora was born in Nakusp. A second daughter Aetta, arrived the following year, and a son, George, was born in Nakusp in 1903 before the family returned to Newfoundland. George grew up to be an interesting guy. He worked as an entomologist and orchard inspector before joining the RCMP in 1923, and served in the arctic and western Canada. While stationed on Ellesmere Island in 1927-28 he discovered what became known as Makinson Inlet. George later returned to Newfoundland to operate the family dairy farm and represented Port de Grave in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1949-51. He died in 1986. A post office operated at Makinsons, BC from 1912 to 1960, but the community no longer exists. Makinsons, Nfld. no longer has a post office either, but still has a population of 438.

The author of an exciting new wartime novel called Bird’s Eye View will present a highly-entertaining talk and slide show of vintage photographs at the Salmo Valley Public Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 18. Bird’s Eye View is the only novel ever written featuring a Canadian woman in uniform as the main character. It tells the story of Rose Jolliffe, a young woman from Saskatchewan whose hometown becomes an air training base. Fired with patriotism, she joins the Royal Canadian Air Force herself – one of 50,000 Canadian women who enlisted to support the fighting men. Rose travels overseas and becomes an interpreter of aerial photographs, spying on the enemy from the sky, searching out camouflaged bomb targets on the continent. Author Elinor Florence of Invermere, B.C., grew up on a former wartime airfield near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, worked for newspapers in all four western provinces, and was a regular contributor to Reader’s Digest for eight years. She also owned and published the Columbia Valley Pioneer newspaper in Invermere. Elinor will present a personal account of how
she became interested in wartime history, the contribution made by Canadian women, and some of the amazing discoveries made by the aerial photographic interpreters. Her one-hour presentation, sponsored by the Kootenay Library Federation, is suitable for men, women and older children. Following her presentation, Elinor will sign copies of her book. Feel free to wear your wartime vintage duds — Elinor will be in costume! Bird’s Eye View is her first novel, published by Dundurn Press of Toronto. It’s available from any bookstore, and as an e-book. Copies will also be available for sale at the event. With her career exploding across the world, Selkirk College alumna Kiesza will take part in a special event to help future students reach their goals in the music industry. The international pop star will be returning to Nelson at the end of November to visit her old strumming grounds on the Tenth Street Campus where she began building the foundation of her success in the Contemporary Music & Technology Program. Kiesza will perform at the sold-out Selkirk College Gala 2015 at Nelson’s Mary Hall on Nov. 28. Wanting to give back to the post-secondary roots she planted at Selkirk College, Kiesza will also take part in a Sunday, Nov. 29 event that will raise money for a scholarship to be established in her name. The “Hanging Out With Kiesza” event invites the community to come meet the musician and take in a two-song unplugged performance. “We’re excited to have an opportunity to raise funds for this new scholarship,” says Selkirk College Donor & Alumni Coordinator Joleen Kinakin. “Kiesza has been gracious enough to give her time to this event which will enable her fans see her in an intimate setting. The money raised will go towards assisting future students in the music program lessen the financial burden that comes with a post-secondary education.” Kiesza arrived to Selkirk College from Calgary as an 18-year-old bursting with talent. Honing her craft in the studios at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus, she graduated in 2009 and continued her music studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2014, Kiesza arrived on the international stage with her hit song “Hideway” which featured an incredible video that has more than 250 million views on YouTube. Over the last two years, Kiesza has released a fulllength album, captured three Juno Awards, toured the world and collaborated with some of the world’s biggest stars like Rhianna. She is currently working on her second album and recently took part in a concert for the David Foster Foundation in Toronto where she performed alongside Stevie Wonder. “It’s pretty impressive to see what she has done since leaving Selkirk College,” says Kinakin. “Having her come back to give her time and meet her fans is going to help make this a weekend to remember.” The event will take place between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Mary Hall on the Tenth Street Campus. There will be a two-song unplugged set, autograph availability, music from current students and door prizes. Tickets for the event are $10 (cash only) with all proceeds going towards the scholarship.
