ridges played a big part in Campbell River this year. By now everyone knows that two big construction projects are underway in Campbell River – the $1.09 billion John Hart Generating Station upgrade project and the $274.5 million new Campbell River hospital. Those two massive projects will serve as the economic bridge that allows the Campbell River area to transition from a pulp and paper mill town to a bright new future as a more diverse economy thriving on creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation. But there was another bridge story that was the highlight of the past year. The Elk Falls Suspension Bridge was completed in the spring to rave reviews. Driven by the Rotary Club of Campbell River and supportive individuals and businesses, the bridge opened in May in Elk Falls Provincial Park and gives the public a spectacular front view of the park’s namesake falls. The exciting span across the Elk Falls Canyon has proved to be a must-see destination in the Campbell River area. It is also proving to be an economic booster in its own small way. From June through September, 56,000 people visited the bridge and its popularity shows no sign of abating as fall transitions into winter. The Elk Falls Suspension Bridge is an example of Campbell River’s can-do attitude as well as the innovative thinking that the community is capable of. It’s a relatively small project (compared to the billion dollar generating station upgrade) but it

is paying back big dividends that go beyond the dollar 4 figure and touch on developing pride in the community and just being plain, old fun as well. Campbell River is still feeling its way through the post-pulp mill era. The closing of the economic powerhouse that was the Elk Falls mill left a giant hole in the local economy and no one was sure what the city’s future looked like. Well, we’re happy to report that five years later, the city has weathered the storm and is on the upswing. During that period, people never left the Campbell River area, the population never dipped and today remains a robust 33,000. Campbell Riverites adapted. Many found work in the oil patch but still kept their homes and families here, choosing to commute. Another transition is underway as the super-heated oil economy in Alberta cools but Campbell Riverites are used to transitions. The new hospital and the generating station upgrade are helping the local economy smooth over the loss of the pulp mill, bridging the gap between it’s industrial past and its new economic future. Local businesses are coping with the change. Many are thriving. Local automobile dealers are an example of a local industry that is transitioning in a way that positions them for a bright future. Many success stories are contained in Progress 2015. Peruse these pages and meet the people who are writing those stories, meet the businesses that are building bridges to the future.

Campbell River Optometry goes cutting edge with OCT Campbell River Optometry Centre has just acquired a state of the art retinal imaging device that places Optometrist Dr. Ghislaine Lauzon, and her team at the leading edge of eye (L to R) Kelly Kirkham, Dr. Ghislaine Lauzon, health care on Vancouver Island. Teresa Promreiter The device is called an OCT, or Optical Coherence Tomography, which is a test that uses light waves to take cross-sectional pictures of the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. Optometric Assistant Teresa Promreiter, who operates the equipment, says: “The OCT allows us to see deep into the most important layers of the eye.” Dr. Lauzon says: “As our population ages, Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration are becoming serious health issues. With the OCT, each of the retina’s distinctive layers can be seen. The retinal scan can be compared to past patient scans to help me detect and monitor these diseases, even before my patient experiences any symptoms. The sooner that I can get the proper treatment for my patients, the more of his or her vision can be saved. “The rewarding part of my job is knowing that I can provide the best possible eye care for all of my friends on Northern Vancouver Island for years to come with this machine.” For more information about Campbell River Optometry Centre go to: campbellriveroptometry.com or call 250-287-2020 and receptionist Kelly Kirkham will be pleased to help you.

Jim’s Clothes Closet Taking men’s wear seriously Jim’s Clothes Closet takes its role as the only dedicated men’s wear store in its three communities seriously. “We have to carry a broad spectrum of goods from workwear to the offices – shirts and ties – and everything in between for the casual side of things,” explains Drew Bradley. “It works for guys because they like to have one-stop shopping,” adds Bradley, general manager for the company’s stores in Campbell River, Port Alberni and Courtenay. The Campbell River store handles shoes, too. The Campbell River location is newer than its Port Alberni and Courtenay counterparts. The Campbell River layout allows more efficient use of the space than in Courtenay, Bradley notes. The range of services includes tuxedo rentals as well as options for big and tall men that range from suits and sports jackets up to size 56 tall in stock. Jim’s can order up to size 60. Thanks to a flexible program called i.MEASURE by S.Cohen, Jim’s can create custom-made suits, blazers, sports jackets, vests and pants. The made-in-Canada garments arrive at the store in three weeks, Bradley adds. Besides local customers, the Dogwood Street location also serves men’s wear needs from outside the city. With construction work that includes the John Hart Dam, hospital and Berwick, Bradley says opening a Campbell River store was “a no-brainer.” Jim’s Clothes Closet, which has been dressing Vancouver Island men for almost 50 years, promises denim to suits for the quality man. It’s not often that a Campbell River business gets to debut a national corporate redesign but that’s what Scott Kilby’s new Campbell River Hyundai building did earlier this year. The automobile company’s Canadian arm launched a new look for its dealerships across the country just when Campbell River Hyundai was building a new store in a new location in North Campbell River which meant Campbell River Hyundai was the first wave of dealerships to sport the new corporate image. The fortunate set of circumstances even earned Campbell River Hyundai a mention in a write up in a national automobile magazine, Canadian Auto World, in its September 2014 edition entitled “Hyundai’s striking new image program turning heads.” “Hyundai’s Global Dealership Image Space identity program features the most striking visual departure in recent memory.” Canadian Auto World says. The Brand New Campbell River Hyundai has a new look, new management and new attitude. Stop by our brand new Campbell River Hyundai to join in on the excitement.

Visitors have been flocking to the new suspension bridge in Elk Falls Provincial Park since it opened in May. From June through September, about 56,000 people visited the bridge, said Lorrie Bewza, who spearheaded the project for the Rotary Club of Campbell River. Bewza, who installed a mechanical counter for those four months, estimates another 10,000 visitors during the first three weeks of October. “The number I got when I started this (project) six years ago from BC Parks was 70,000 visitors a year to the upper Elk Falls park. We forecast in our original proposal to double that. I think we’re going to be awful close to the figure or even exceed it.”

Figures obtained from BC Parks concur that there were about 70,000 visitors since May, said media and promotions spokesperson Andrea Knowles of Campbell River Community Economic Development. “These park enhancements have increased tourism and economic opportunities in the Campbell River area, allowing access to Elk Falls for all abilities,” added Teresa Davis of Tourism Campbell River & Region. “Having a free first-class attraction, complements what Campbell River & Region already has to offer,” Davis said. Trip Advisor Canada lists the bridge as No. 2 of 36 things to do in the area, behind only the Museum at Campbell River.

The bridge, designed to safely hold the equivalent of 400 men weighing 300 pounds each, opened May 9 in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the park. Bewza underscores Davis’ point about the accessibility of the 60-metre-high and 64-metre-long bridge high above Elks Falls Canyon. It begins, he noted, with a new 83-stall, bus- and RV-capable parking lot provided by BC Parks and BC Hydro that is wheelchair-accessible. Parks and Hydro created 300 metres of trail and Rotarians upgraded 300 more metres to a barrier-free accessibility standard with a grade of five degrees or fewer.

To increase safety, especially for people in wheelchairs, Rotarians also erected about 300 metres of fencing. The project was made possible by a federal grant of $86,650, $325,000 in provincial money from the Island Coastal Economic Trust, $150,000 from BC Hydro and $124,500 from the Rotary Club. Bewza previously credited “the never-ending support and generous donations of the people of Campbell River to the annual Rotary TV Auction.” The 41st auction happens November 20 and 21.

Why we should “arrange to pre-arrange” The reason families “arrange to pre-arrange” funerals is the realization that informed discussions make for better decisions, says Campbell River funeral director Kent Roduck. Kent and Rosemarie Roduck are licenced funeral directors and owners of Island Funeral Services/Elk Falls Crematorium and Reception Centre. “People realize that sourcing proper information on what’s required when someone dies and the related choices they need to make are much better being discussed prior to that need,” Kent says. “Misinformation regarding funeral planning can be clarified easily by a licenced professional. It is also an opportunity to get to know the person who will handle personal details, as well as a chance to see first-hand the facilities being offered. Can the funeral director provide a professional environment where your family will feel comfortable? Are they worthy of your trust?” The Roducks have found that what families find most beneficial about the pre-arrangement process is the opportunity to prepay and lock in at today’s prices. “We call it ‘The Inflation-Proof Plan,’” Kent says. “Your funds are placed in a trust or insurance annuity with the growth designed to offset future price increases. In today’s inflationary environment, it’s a wise thing to do.” For more information about funeral pre-planning call the Roducks at Island Funeral Services/Elk Falls Crematorium and Reception Centre. 250-287-3366.

Hub International Barton Insurance Brokers Campbell Anchor InnRiver Mirror Hub Barton’s brokers treat clients like family How does an insurance broker set themselves apart from the competition when all are offering similar products? “By treating our clients like family,” says Tracey Jackson, Branch Manager of Hub International Barton Insurance Brokers. Hub International Barton Insurance Brokers opened its doors in Campbell River in 2006 with a staff of six brokers dedicated to providing quality customer service. Today, Tracey has a staff of 16 with three of the original brokers still at their desks helping folks meet their insurance needs and two others still working within the company. “There’s a core of people who have stayed and there is a reason they have stayed... because we are a great team, working for a great company; we can’t go wrong”. Tracey says if a customer comes through the door and her team can’t deliver on a service request they will help that customer find out where they can get the help they need. Over the years the Hub Barton’s brokers have volunteered time and energy to help more than 30 non-profit organizations and charities … from the Howie Meeker Golf Classic, to Cops for Cancer, to Habitat for Humanity and the local cadets. “Our mantra is to thank the community for its support.” Hub International Barton Insurance Brokers is located at 1241 Ironwood Street. Coastline Mazda

Coastline Mazda … a “Dealer of Distinction” In 2012, when Coastline Mazda moved from its cramped quarters in Willow Point to its new spacious location on the Island Highway, Sales Manager Allen Duns had to go on a “Mazda shopping spree” to fill his huge new lot with new and used product. “When I filled our new lot with all our cars from Willow Point the lot still looked empty. Today we offer 30 more new vehicles and 20 more used vehicles than we did before. Our customers are so much happier. They can move around and look at our product so much easier. We felt a bit forgotten in Willow Point.” But they hardly feel forgotten any more. Currently, on the lot there are about 60 new vehicles and more than 40 used vehicles of which half are pick-up trucks. And, for three years running, Coastline Mazda has recorded annually increasing sales. “We are thankful for all our sales and service custom-

ers. We have a pretty loyal following. Mazda owners tend to stay with Mazdas because we have such a complete lineup.” Beside the added lot space, Allen and his staff of 13 moved into a “super, energy efficient” facility with a covered service drop off area and more service bays. With its ongoing focus on customer satisfaction the dealership has earned some of the highest customer service scores in the Canadian Mazda family. In fact, Allen’s team has won the corporation’s “Dealer of Distinction” award for three years running. Most of the sales and financing staff have also been recognized as being in the top tier of customer service and excellence by Mazda Canada. Allen’s job is made easier thanks to Mazda’s unlimited warranty and its breakthrough Skyactiv Technology. “In the first three years you could put 200,000 kilometres on your new Mazda and still have comprehensive bumper-to-

bumper warranty coverage and that also applies to the power train for five years.” Mazda’s Skyactiv Technology, Allen says, is an innovative automotive engineering system that delivers superior fuel economy and lower emissions without giving up an ounce of Mazda’s driving exhilaration. Allen came to Mazda after 10 years with Ford in town. Coastline Mazda has been owned since 2007 by Karl Ebdrup and his business partner Steve Marshall. Being a Mazda dealer is like coming home for Karl, as his father was a service manager for a Mazda dealership when he was growing up. Coastline Mazda is at 2280 Island Highway on the south bound side of the divided highway just across the road from the Ideal Cafe. Northbound drivers can reach it easily by making a left turn at the intersection adjacent to the dealership.

What a difference a year makes

Campbell River’s new hospital project well on its way to completion Campbell River’s soon-to-becompleted 95 bed, 32,000 square metre hospital facility to replace its current 79-bed facility is coming along just fine, according to those in charge of the project. The $274.5-million project, complete with new parkade and heli-pad is scheduled to be completed and operational by April of 2017, at which point there will be a six month transition period where staff off the hospital will be transferring and setting up equipment and training in the new facility. The demolition of the old facility will then take another six months. One of the aspects of the project those in charge are most happy with, according to Norma Jones, Clinical Project Director of the venture, is the layout of the facility. The locations of each department and their relationships to each other will ensure, she says, not only that patients’ experience is less confusing, but also makes those who work

there able to more easily and quickly access the areas of the facility related to their jobs. The centralized registration area is just one example of this concept at work. This central registration area will “fundamentally change patient experience at the facility,” according to Jones. “As you know if you’ve ever had to come in for a test, you’ve come in and you’ve gone to one area to have your lab work done, and you’ve gone to another area to have your medical imaging done, and so on, and at each place you go, you’ve had to register. What we’ve done is try to be more patient focused,” she says. Patients will now register for all the tests and procedures they’ll be having done at the hospital at the central registration desk, and won’t have to worry about stopping in at a desk every department thereafter. While concerns have been raised

by members of the public about the services that will be offered by the new facility – specifically, the lack of psychiatric services – Chief Project Officer Tom Sparrow says the design itself is flexible and expandable, should it require adjustments in the future. “This hospital is designed to accommodate an additional 40,000 square feet of space on level one, which means you could go out 40,000 square feet, and then you could go up three floors,” Sparrow said, implying there was consideration in the design phase for an additional wing to be added at a later date. Also, the inside of the structure itself, as it’s designed, can be rearranged to accommodate more services, should they be needed in the future. “Our administration area could be turned into a medical area, for example,” Sparrow said. “A lot of the ambulatory care could be changed

into something else. We tried to design these facilities to include a lot of adaptability and scalability.” Sparrow also announced at the most recent Community Information Meeting that as of the end of August, 161 of the 263 hires made on the project were from the Campbell River community. Another 50 were from elsewhere on Vancouver Island, showing the projects commitment to hire locally, he said. He also told those assembled that the project is on schedule. “We’re probably six weeks further ahead than other projects of this size would be at this point,” he said, clearly proud of the progress being made. The next North Island Hospitals Project Community Information Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 10 at the North Island College/ Timberline Theatre at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend and get the latest information on the project.

QUADRA ISLAND – Heriot Bay Inn radiates an authenticity nurtured by its colourful history, embellished by its idyllic surroundings and sustained by an eclectic group of custodian owners dedicated to the proposition that their guests deserve to be entertained island style. The Inn’s general manager Lois Lois Taylor, General Manager Taylor is one of those owners, 20 custodians calling themselves Community Custodial Concepts (CCC). “Being able to share this Quadra Island gem with the touring public is very special. Heriot Bay Inn is a gift we share. It enjoys an authenticity that has evolved over the years because of the place, the people and the history,” Lois says. “World travellers often tell me this is one of the most special places they have ever visited. They feel grounded here.” The CCC bought the Inn in 2008. They felt it was “poised for success” and after a few years of baby steps they made it profitable. “We gathered an ownership group together that brought a lot of knowledge, from experienced hotel staff to highly skilled carpenters,” Lois says. “It’s a lively, vibrant destination as well as being an amazing blissful place.” And, it exudes history. The first Inn was opened in 1895. The historical record states that it was “a place of few pretentions, a loggers’ watering hole disdained by the Island’s elite.” Of the owner, Hosea Arminius Bull, it is said that “if he was a preacher he was a licentious one.” That Inn burned to the ground in 1910. A second hotel lasted one year before it also burned. The existing Inn was built in 1912. Today, the Inn offers 10 rooms, three cabins, a two-bedroom suite, RV camping for 40 units and 1,800 feet of dock space. It has a 176-seat dining room and a 100-seat pub. The Inn is a perfect spot for weddings, anniversaries and other large gatherings. In fact, Lois and her staff have staged reunions for up to 350 people. Yes, you can rent the entire property for a special event. Yes, between November and April, you can rent the Inn itself for $1,000 a night. And, yes, you too could become a Heriot Bay Inn custodial owner; shares are available. The Inn has become Quadra Island’s entertainment anchor with live HBI Pub music every weekend and Herons dinner shows twice a month that feature guests like Valdi, Harry Manx, Sheri Ulrich and Barney Bentall. The Inn has also staged speakers’ series that have attracted celebrities like Bob McDonald (Quirks & Quarks) and environmental activist David Suzuki. Steve Marshall Ford

Steve Marshall Ford is on the move Of all the auto dealerships in Campbell River, Steve Marshall Ford is number one in sales volume and it has held that record for at least six years, but it is “landlocked” at its downtown location and it needs room to spread its wings. Karl Ebdrup, General Manager and Partner in the Steve Marshall Auto Group, says the long term plan is to join other Campbell River dealerships in the automotive sales corridor north of the bridge on the Island Highway. The Ford dealership has been downtown for 45 years. “The location has been great, but we are out-growing the property and it is certainly A first rendering of the “new” Steve Marshall Ford building. time for an updated building. The fact is, at this location we are landlocked by four streets,” Karl says. One of the reasons for planning a new building is that the industry has changed. Dropping your vehicle off with the dealer and leaving it for the day to be serviced is a thing of the past. These days a basic service can be accomplished in about 25 minutes to half an hour and service-whileyou-wait businesses like Great Canadian Oil Change and Jiffy Lube have captured a lot of that market. “This is a great old building but it is not set up that way,” Karl says. “So our new dealership will be set up so you can have a 25 to 30-minute service in 25 to 30 minutes. We will have a service drive. While you have a coffee we will do a tire rotation, oil change, exterior wash, interior vacuum and mat shampoo all in the same time and at the same cost as the Jiffy Lubes. It will be twice the service.” “We are excited about being able to offer that kind of service to our customers.” Of course, Steve Marshall Ford will take its reputation with it to the new location. From the time the dealership was the title sponsor of the BC Winter Games in 1997 it has been known as the “Friend of the Community.” For 11 of the past 12 years Steve has won Ford’s “President’s Award” for sales volume and customer service. In the meantime, Karl says his team is going all out to keep up with the demand for the new aluminum body F150 pick-up. The completely redesigned truck is 800 pounds lighter than its forerunner and has better fuel capacity. Even though it is lighter, a stronger frame allows it to retain its best in class towing capacity. SuavAir drones have a bird’s eye view Colin Filliter and his partner Blair Hunter have adapted drone technology to the challenges of the real estate and resource sectors and in the process they have established one of Campbell River’s truly unique hi-tech companies. SuavAir safely uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to capture low elevation aerial imagery around Vancouver Island. “Our Colin Filliter of SuavAir ability to digitally capture both photographs and videos from new heights and angles provides endless opportunities for a variety of applications,” Colin says. Both Colin and Blair are professional foresters and launched SuavAir, in part, because they knew that using a drone to do “free-to-grow” surveys of replanted forest lands provided their forestry clients with enormous productivity and safety benefits. Now, they are growing the real estate side of the business. A typical real estate package includes eight to 12 high resolution photos taken from a variety of angles and elevations. “Our UAV allows the realtor to control the camera while our certified pilot flies to capture the exact shots they want,” Colin says. It was a six-month process for SuavAir to receive a Special Flight Operation Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada. It allows Colin and Blair to fly anywhere in BC. The SFOC is a legal requirement for commercial flights, validates liability insurance, and ensures that the safety and privacy of the public is maintained and respected. North Island Nissan … where loyalty counts For Mike Ball being the General Manager of North Island Nissan is about more than running a thriving auto dealership. It’s about being part of a thriving local economy as well. Mike is a Campbell River lifer. He has been in the automotive industry in Campbell River since he was 19 years old. He started in sales and rose through the ranks to ownership. “I was born and raised in the best place on earth and I see no reason to ever leave,” Mike says. Loyalty to Campbell River and its economic wellbeing is at the top of Mike’s list of priorities. “I encourage my staff to shop locally and I hope my present and future customers never find a reason to shop for a Nissan product outside Campbell River. “That’s why I have offered a $1,000 price guarantee to customers. If I can’t beat any other BC dealers’ price on a new Nissan product then I will give them $1,000.” Mike also believes that after-sales service is just as important as the initial purchase of your vehicle. “At North Island Nissan we believe keeping contact with our clients is a vital part of our business. Vancouver Island motorists know they will find expert and affordable Nissan maintenance and repair service. We deliver - it’s that simple.” Part of that service includes free vehicle

washing anytime … not just when you are in for servicing. “Our customers can make use of our free shuttle service and loaner cars.” Mike and his team at Nissan are stoked about the imminent arrival of the Cummins-Powered 2016 TITAN® XD. Hyundai was in the first wave of dealerships to sport a new corporate image. Hyundai wanted customers to think of the cars first when they thought of the company, not a corporate colour scheme. So they picked a premium look and feel that would let them stand apart. This new approach earned Campbell River Hyundai a mention in Canadian

Auto World, a national automobile magazine. Indeed, the corridor seems to breed success. Mazda established itself there three years ago and has won the corporation’s “Dealer of Distinction” award for three years running. One of the veterans of the corridor is Bill Howich who now operates four locations – Bill Howich Chrysler, Bill Howich RV & Marine, Bill Howich Detail Center and Bill Howich Clearance Center. Last summer, after months of working around construction, Bill and his staff threw the doors open on the beautiful new dealership building. “We were due for an expansion and it turned into a whole new dealership,” Howich says. “Our service department was bursting at the seams. Now we have 14 service bays, double from before. We have two express lube bays where we can provide the services offered by the quick lube folks downtown. Our showroom has gone from one vehicle to

seven. We even put a new café in the showroom because there is not much out this way in terms of restaurants.” “What I like about this location is that the folks driving out here seem to be already interested in a vehicle purchase,” Howich adds.

Howich’s neighbour, Strathcona Toyota, attracts customers from Courtenay, Comox, Nanaimo, Duncan, Port Alberni, Victoria, Sooke, Gold River, Woss, Sayward, Port McNeill, Port Hardy … and even Powell River and all the Gulf Islands.

Discovery Trekking never wears thin Famous for super-fast drying sport and travel towels sold worldwide, Discovery Trekking also makes several clothing lines from the same moisture-wicking fabrics, such as shirts, sleepwear and “hot flash” pillowcases. The fabric contains silver, which kills odor-causing bacteria. Everything stays much fresher. The towels began with just a few colors and sizes, and have been expanded to include a new Extreme Ultralight version that is also available in trendy, limited edition prints. Discovery Trekking, on Ironwood, is the only factory-direct manufacturer of high-tech outdoor wear in BC. Each garment is custom sized for a great fit. While some customers like to grab a sample off the rack, most prefer to choose their own colours, weight of fabric, and options such a hood, extra pockets, or hi-vis piping. The owner of Discovery Trekking, Leslie Hanes, recommends that you make your choices carefully because the jackets simply don’t wear out! When choosing for another person, gift certificates are recommended because it is important to work with each client to ensure the perfect fit. Some of the products you will see at the Ironwood store may surprise you. Weatherproof saddle skirts for equestrians, swimming undergarments for adults with incontinence, and even a line of products for removing pet messes. Jenny Craig United Anchor Floors Inn Weight Loss Center The River’s Jenny Craig is one-of-a-kind Opening a new Jenny Craig Weight Loss Center in Campbell River was an adventure for owner Leslie Hanes. The new facility, which features almost 100 Jenny Craig foods on site, is the only full Jenny Craig located within a Curves club. It’s one-of-a-kind. Leslie says: “The owners of Curves International purchased Jenny Craig and offered select Curves owners in the USA only, the opportunity to open a hybrid Jenny center. I convinced them to let me do it too, but I wanted to have food on site, which other Curves don’t have.” Hanes was able to renovate to include industrial freezers. Staff went to California to take extensive training. “Jenny Craig is recognized by the Journal of American Medicine as one of the top programs for both losing and maintaining weight loss. My staff and I have not only been trained, but we have successfully lost weight on the program ourselves. The food is gourmet. It’s not ‘processed’ in a negative way … it’s simply cooked, packaged, and frozen for the most part. It’s proven to work. “ Jenny Craig is located at Curves, 919 Ironwood Road, but it is a completely separate franchise. Both men and women participate in the program. New owners of the Royal Coachman

Mumtaz Chatur & Nasir Ladha

The new co-owners of Campbell River’s iconic pub, the Royal Coachman Inn like the area so much they’re moving here from Richmond. Nasir Ladha and partner Mumtaz Chatur, who become the official owners November 3rd are looking forward to getting involved in their new community, says Ladha. They don’t plan radical changes at the well-known Dogwood Street meeting place that has served the River City since 1978. The Royal Coachman is much more than a pub. As Ladha says, “It’s got a lot of amenities that have a lot of positives to it, including the new full course breakfast, the outdoor garden patio and the family friendy environment. There is also live music on Friday & Saturday as well as relaxing Jazz music on Sunday afternoons.” It truly has evolved over the years from a neighbourhood pub to a multi-faceted operation. If you want a drink, you have your choice of the traditional English-style pub, the Paddock Lounge (that doubles as a meeting room) and Mudslingers Cappuccino & Espresso. The popular coffee shop offers a hot breakfast menu seven days a week. If it’s food you want, besides the pub there’s also the Carriage Room, a full-service banquet room to accommodate wedding receptions, company dinners and presentations. The room is wired for wireless Internet and other modern electronic amenities. The oak-paneled executive boardroom is perfect for private dining or meetings of up to 20 people. As if that weren’t enough, the Royal Coachman has a private liquor store and offers catering! “See you soon!” www.theroyalcoachmaninn.com

Needful Winery Things 40Knots

24

Needful Things provides a great deal of character Over the last 10 – 15 years in Campbell River we’ve seen several big box stores come in and change the landscape of our city. There are those who appreciate the convenience and bulk-buy savings these stores can offer. But we also have locally-owned, specialized stores providing our town with a great deal of character and a great level of craftsmanship and product-quality. Needful Things is one such locally-owned small business. Owners Geoff and Kim Hancock run the store with a clearly defined goal; to provide quality pre-owned furniture and home décor to Campbell River and surrounding areas. It’s more than just a used furniture outlet. It’s an example of the potential we have here in CR for running a successful family business – one that is locally owned, sustainable and environmentally friendly, and which contributes a great deal to the economy – all while providing good old fashioned quality. As of this year Needful Things is celebrating its 13th year but its roots as a furniture store run deeper. In 1977 the 17,000 square foot building where they are located was built by the Lukinuk brothers, Danny and Mitch. And so became the home of Mitch’s Furniture, where it ran successfully for many years. The space then housed a few different businesses before it ended up vacant.

In 2002 Danny and wife Jackie Lukinuk decided to get back into furniture. This time though – into preowned furniture. Danny and Jackie Lukinuk ran the store for several years. In 2006, their daughter Kim, along with husband Geoff Hancock, bought the business and they haven’t looked back. “There are a couple of other stores around that do what we do, on a smaller scale, but we are unique in many ways,” says Kim Hancock. “We only bring in high-end, sold wood furniture, and we do all repairs and maintenance on-site. We’re not interested in press-board dressers or anything like that. I’m pretty certain we are the largest used furniture store in British Columbia.” “I travel to Vancouver and other larger cities and buy a lot from estate sales,” says Geoff. “We only by quality, Canadian-made as often as possible, and we offer furniture that is ready for a home immediately.” “Used furniture stores are a relatively new trend I would say,” says Kim. “30-40 years ago you would be hard pressed to find an outlet like ours where you could buy or sell quality used furniture. We have people phone all the time who have older furniture that’s just too nice to go to landfill or a thrift shop. In a way, we are a recycler of furniture. We are an outlet that helps keep furniture out

Geoff and Kim Hancock, owners of Needful Things. of the landfill, which makes us a green business.” “The fluctuations in the economy hasn’t hurt our business much,” says Kim. “People are always looking for a bargain and I think they’re probably more apt to check out a second hand store first and see what they can find when money is tighter than usual. In 2014 we expanded by 3,000 square feet, which gives us a total show floor area of 10,000 square feet.” Kim says they have many customers who are over 50 who “grew up with quality,” and who have a real appreciation for the furniture they find at Needful Things. She says they put a fair amount into local senior’s homes, and when they get furniture that is functional but not up to a certain quality standard, much of it

is sent to local charities like Habitat for Humanity. She says once customers know Needful Things is there, they come from all over the Island and surrounding areas. “We have customers coming from Comox Valley, Quadra and Cortes, Sayward, Gold River and Mt. Washington – often people furnishing cabins,” says Kim. “We’re also ideal for customers who are only in town temporarily.” “People are realizing more and more, there is excellent value in preowned, quality furniture,” she says. “For us, as Needful Things celebrates 13 years, that means business is good in Campbell River. And we expect to be around to celebrate many more milestones in the years to come.”

Anchor Inn

Anchor Inn dresses up for the modern age of tourism Anchor Inn, Campbell River’s only truly oceanfront hotel, is undergoing a facelift that will transform it into a modern trend setter in this city’s burgeoning tourism sector. More than a year ago the hotel’s owner of 17 years, Burnaby entrepreneur Zahir Karim, embarked on a program of renovations and upgrades that would touch every corner of the structure. General manager Sherry McCutcheon says Phase One started with all new roofs. Then came new patio doors, new balconies, new beds and 42” Smart TVs. Phase Two is underway now and that includes new modern exterior colours, new landscaping and driveways. Phase Three next spring will include new carpets, furniture and a complete overhaul of the restaurant and convention facilities. “I am really proud of what we have accomplished,” McCutcheon says. “These upgrades are creating a classy modern tourism environment. And, I am equally proud that all the renovation services and materials have been purchased right here in Campbell River.” And, the icing on the cake? Anchor Inn has just signed contracts with tourist agencies that will result in an influx of European guests in 2016. Anchor Inn has meeting and convention facilities for up to 250 guests and McCutcheon anticipates that the rejuvenated, modern hotel will attract new conventions to the city starting next year.

Tyee Chevrolet Buick GMC

Tyee Chevrolet thriving in the city centre When fans go to see the Campbell River Storm compete at Strathcona Gardens they can’t miss the Tyee Chevrolet Buick GMC logo near centre ice. It’s a nice reminder that the dealership is a sponsor of our community’s home team and it is a subtle reminder that Tyee Chevrolet Buick GMC is thriving in the centre of Campbell River. Being an active participant in the life of Campbell River and being committed to its downtown location are two things General Manager Troy Roblee holds “near and dear.” “This dealership is committed to downtown Campbell River. We are partners in the ongoing revitalization of the core. Investing in the heart of the city is something we hold near and dear to our hearts.” Tyee has also demonstrated its commitment in real terms with close to $2 million in dealership upgrades recently. That included a new showroom and a customer-friendly drive-through service facility. “Situated here at the corner of Dogwood and 13th Avenue we have the best exposure a car

dealership could hope for. Thousands of cars pass our showroom every day and we are closer than our competition to the main population south of the city centre. It’s not like being in an industrial park.” Troy is been with GM for more than 20 years. Before coming to Tyee three years ago he was a GM in New Brunswick. He says one of the pluses working for veteran owner Brian McLean is that “his focus is always local … he wants to make sure that we support worthwhile endeavours at home, like the food bank and Cops for Cancer.” “Coming out here from a larger city, St. John, you see the difference, how support of the community is so important,” Troy says. That focus on community is reflected in the

quality of customer service delivered by Fixed Operations Manager John Braun who has more than 45 years’ experience as a technician and service manager on Vancouver Island. “My technicians are key to this operation,” John says. “The good ones are hard to find and my guys – Arnie, Rob, Rick, Ken, David, Shane, Kevin, Paul, Billy and Blaine – have more than 130 years’ experience between them. I’ve cornered the market. “These guys are constantly training online. They are tested every month and most have a ‘Grand Master’ designation which means they have excelled at their training.” John says that skill and caring means “the customer gets it fixed right the first time.”

BC Hydro

28

ahead with generating station upgrade

Drilling into the rock in preparation for the surface blasts behind the existing John Hart generating station.

BC Hydro is having a blast on the John Hart Generating Station replacement project. Literally. Blasting began on a new outlet where water from the new underground powerhouse will be released from the tunnel into the Campbell River. Trees were cleared from the slope in order to begin the next phase with surface blasting on the slope to the north of the hydroelectric penstocks, between the powerhouse and Station View Trail. “This is another interesting component of this innovative project and unlike other John Hart construction site locations, this area is closest to the river and trail system,” BC Hydro spokesperon Stephen Watson said. “People will be able to see the work from the wooden bridge on the

Station View Trail so we wanted to make sure the community understands what’s going on there. Site construction is expanding to all the key areas and we are excited to see things unfold.” BC Hydro is replacing the John Hart Generating Station west of Campbell River in a $1.093 billion project to improve seismic performance, improve reliability, and to protect downstream fish habitat. This year was a big year for the project as some heavy construction is well underway and interest in it amongst the public proved to

be very high. In July, the first of a series of open houses on the construction was attended by about 1,000 people. They were shuttled from downtown Campbell River to the area around the opening of the intake tunnels for self-guided tours. In September, the project contractor began excavating a pieslice shape into the slope behind the existing generating station below Elk Falls. The deepest point of pie-shaped excavation will extend 32 metres into the hillside. The main blasting work is expected to

last through to December. Until the new works are complete and ready for commissioning, an area of rock will be left along the river edge to keep the tunnel opening dry. The surface blasting will occur four or five times a week, and only during daylight hours. Measures are put in place to prevent fly-rock from the surface blasts and as a result of safety precautions, trail closures are not anticipated. Project staff will ask people to keep moving along the trail just prior to the blasts, as

29 There are now 215 people working on the project in Campbell River. ~~~~ The powerhouse cavern currently under construction is as long as an NFL football field, not including the end zones.

The John Hart Dam intake on the left is under construction while the cofferdam is being built to the right to seal off the area that will be drained of water to create the intake from John Hart Lake. they don’t want people to linger on the pedestrian bridge waiting for a blast to happen. Watson said the surface blasts are highly controlled and covered with blast matting, so should provide limited noise to the surrounding area. Extensive environmental planning, approvals and monitoring are required for any work near the river, and the project team has prepared extensively to ensure all standards are met or exceeded. An example of BC Hydro’s environmental sensitivity is illustrated by their “I Saved a Frog!” sticker program. Despite fencing the site in an attempt to prevent a provincially-protected species found on the site – the red legged frog – from being impacted by the project, every now and then one manages to find its way onto the site. “One of those little fellas made it all the way down the service tunnel somehow,” Watson said. “That’s a 300 metre trip. He’s got some kind of story to tell his buddies.” That particular frog – one of three red legged frogs found on site and relocated in September

– was saved by environmental monitor Chris Beers and released back into the wild. Anyone who finds and recovers a red legged frog on site and returns it back to its natural environment gets a special sticker for their hard hat. “They’re very coveted,” Watson said. “Everyone takes a great deal of pride in being a part of this place, and that’s another way we can support that mindset.” That mindset resulted in another pleasant surprise in September when a rare visitor was found on the site. “Because of the awareness we’re fostering through our environmental initiatives,” Watson says, “people are on the lookout for things, which is how we found that praying

mantis. “They don’t generally show up this far north, so it was really something.” They thought it was such a special find, they reported it to the Royal BC Museum. They have also been seeing success in limiting what they call “bat incidents.” Bats have posed a problem in the past. When they get into the tunnels they can be injured or killed by ventilation fans. “We obviously don’t want them in there, not just for us, but for them, as well,” Watson says. “Thankfully, the grating we’ve put in the ventilation seems to have taken care of that problem

and we haven’t had any more issues.” In addition to ongoing blasting at the main power generating cavern and its associated tunnels, work on the new intake system at John Hart Dam, and the beginning of construction on the water discharge outlet below the power station, workers this week will be preparing the site for the new surge tower near the current trail system leading into the park and to the popular Elk Falls suspension bridge. The single surge tank will eventually replace the three existing, 90-metre surge towers, which provide pressure control for each of the three penstocks. The new tank will serve the same purpose in the new, underground inflow tunnel when the project is completed, tentatively set for fall of 2018.

• April 2016: Concrete work commences on the powerhouse once excavation is complete. • 2016: Main access tunnel excavation. • December 2015: Completion of cofferdam, ng of the construction of retaining walls, dewatering of the • Spring 2017: Drilling and blasti powerhouse the from dam. hing power tunnel, stretc area between the cofferdam and the John Hart to the water intake. • March 2016: Powerhouse vertical excavation • 2018/19: projected completion. complete.

There’s a new team at Campbell River Honda

A REFRESHING VIBE

There’s nothing like a fresh start and Campbell River Honda has done that this year with a new general manager, a new sales manager and a new sales team. The bonus is that the new GM, Brian Calbury, is a 40-year industry veteran working exclusively with Honda dealerships across Canada. And, his new sales manager, Todd Chilton, is Campbell River born and raised. In fact, his wellknown family were the owners of the SuperValu store that once anchored the Tyee Plaza. Todd left Campbell River in his early 20s to accumulate 10 years of sales and vehicle finance experience on the Lower Mainland. He returned home this year and joined Honda after working at Bill Howich Chrysler. Brian says: “My focus has always been on customer satisfaction. It’s all about the customer experience. That starts from the very top and works its way down through the organization. “The product itself is so strong and there’s so much product loyalty. Our job is to work on our

reputation as a dealership that takes care of its customers. We want to offer our customers the best possible service and the best price. “Honda has some fantastic programs going right now so it is lucrative for Honda owners to consider trading in their vehicles. There are many loyalty advantages for previous owners and Hondas have the highest re-sale value in the marketplace. It bodes well for customers after three to five years.” Brian is automotive to the core. He took automotive shop in high school in Montreal and started as a Honda technician in 1975. He came to BC in 1979 and never left, working for Honda stores

in Burnaby and Penticton before joining Campbell River Honda earlier this year. The GM says he has always been a believer in the value of different dealerships gathering in an auto neighbourhood as several have done along the Island Highway. “Look at the success of the Richmond Auto Mall,” he says. “When they came into play in the 1980s they were very, very successful because they gave consumers the opportunity to look at various brands in close proximity. “Here, with several dealerships being along the same stretch of highway, it helps us. If someone wants to go car shopping they can simply head out to where the dealers are. It is a great opportunity for us to be exposed to more customers.” Campbell River Honda is located at 2773 North Island Highway right beside Bill Howich Chrysler. Healthy Housing Market Continues Sales in the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB) area edged back slightly in September, but the housing market remains robust, a trend expected to continue for the rest of the year. Last month, 431 single-family homes sold on the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) compared to 405 in September 2014, an increase of six per cent. Month over month, sales decreased by 1.8 per cent from August 2015. Inventory levels are still declining, with active

listings down 15 per cent from one year ago. BCREA Chief Economist Cameron Muir states that the marginal decrease in September sales activity has not affected the overall strength of the housing market. “Our provincial economy continues to be healthy, bolstered by a hefty infusion of tourism dollars over the summer,” says Muir. “Last month’s slight backwards tick in housing activity is no cause for concern. We expect strong sales

momentum for the rest of the year, fuelled by job growth, consumer confidence, and low interest rates.” Nationally, the Canadian economy appears to have emerged from the doldrums caused by the malaise in the oil patch, says Muir, which bodes well for the B.C. housing market. “Although we expect a slight downturn in the housing market in 2016, activity will remain strong,” says Muir. “You don’t typically see home

32

sales reach their highest levels in 10 years and then plateau.” Muir emphasized that the services of a REALTOR® are especially valuable in an active housing market to ensure consumers make smart decisions when buying or selling a home. Although September is traditionally one of the busiest months for REALTORS®, VIREB President-Elect Margo Hoffman says that last month improved upon the

norm. “Our members aren’t run off their feet, but they’re doing a lot of business,” says Hoffman. “Inventory throughout our area continues to decline, and the smaller pool of potential homes for sale will eventually place upward pricing pressure on certain property types in some markets.” In September 2015, the benchmark price for a single-family home in the VIREB coverage area was $340,200, a slight increase over August and up just under six per cent from one year ago. Benchmark pricing tracks the value of a typical home

in the reported area. The average MLS® price of a single-family home decreased marginally from $352,042 one year ago to $350,626 in September 2015. The September 2015 benchmark price of a single-family home in the Campbell River area was $276,100, an increase of 1.41 per cent from last year. In the Comox Valley, the benchmark price was $340,600, up 6.23 per cent from 2014.

Berwick By The Sea Anchor Inn

Berwick by the Sea grounded in community Celebrating its first anniversary this week and quickly approaching 90 per cent capacity, Berwick By The Sea has, in one short year, evolved into a thriving community of seniors that has thoroughly engaged the larger community of Campbell River. Berwick General Manager Gary Forsgren says: “In keeping with Campbell River as a community, our community here is very active and very social. And, there are an incredible number of connections between our residents and the community.” Those connections are not by accident. Berwick’s outreach programs have been extensive in year one. Berwick has become the new home of the Philosophers Café. It recently held its first Living Well Expo which was complimentary for the public. There has been a first Heritage Fashion Show. This December 6th the staff will hold its second Family Christmas Party. Last year there were just 70 residents and 185 of their guests at the party. This year there will be 115 residents and probably 300 of their family members. Wendy Mayers, Berwick’s Manager of Community Relations, says building community connections also includes working with the Campbell River Seniors’ Centre, organizing bus trips, and much more. She recommends that city residents who want to get involved with Berwick’s many public programs should make a habit of checking the website -www.berwickretirement.com/bcr/ -- where they will find weekly events at the bottom of the home page.

Nicon Developments Official opening of our brand new division

Owner and president, Nick Woywitka (left) receives his VIBE award.

Nicon Developments is proud to announce the official opening of our new division, Nicon Homes. With Nicon Developments set to celebrate its 40th birthday we couldn’t think of a better way to do that than with the addition of a brand new Custom Homes Division! This new division rounds out the list of services the Nicon name offers by providing the quality craftsmanship we are famous for on land you already own (although we can assist here too) and we build almost anywhere on Vancouver Island. The best part however is that Nicon Homes offers a multitude of build options providing the budgetary flexibility required in today’s market – by helping our clients build the home of their dreams with prices they can actually afford! We provide fixed pricing on all our homes to almost any stage of construction ensuring a worry free build experience. Nicon Homes will outline the specific cost details so you know exactly what is included and what is not. We have a number of house plans to choose from and we are always open to using our standard costing principles to price out a set of plans our clients provide! Company owner and president, Nick Woywitka, has taken care to have excellent people on board to assist him with his vision. “I have a key project manager, Terry Pearson, an excellent office manager/controller, Debra Woodward and a great marketing and sales manager, Nadine Gendall. I do the planning and hand it over to Terry and he takes it from there.” He added that being able to rely on his people is key to his success. Nicon Homes forms part of the Nicon Developments, a highly accredited award winning company. Nicon recently achieved our finest success to date and won the 2015 Grand VIBE award –“Residential Community of the Year” for their development at Trumpeter Pointe. Nick attributes his success to being able to rely on his people. We have an employee, Lou that has been with Nicon for 27 years. “I build it and they come,” he said. “I’m a bit of a visionary. I see a piece of dirt and I check it out and if I think it’s going to work, I start throwing darts at it. I always have several balls in the air.”

Hygro Gardening Supplies Anchor Inn

As Campbell River grows, so grows Hygro As the community of increasingly sophisticated hobby, organic and professional gardeners grows in Campbell River, Hygro Gardening Supplies grows with it. Hygro Gardening Supplies owner Christa Fernau has been serving growers since 2003. Her store at 1791 Tamarac St. (in the North Island Glass Building on the northbound Inland Island Highway) offers a range of products from micro-irrigation equipment to fans and filters, garden tools, grow tents, hydroponic systems, lighting, nutrients and fertilizers. She reports that her business has grown every year and she has garnered “a lot of community support.” Just as important, Christa says: “We love teaching our customers and passing on our passion for gardening and creating ideal environmental conditions.” Campbell River growers have become increasingly focused on managing their growing projects from controlling pH levels to allow for the absorption of essential elements to installing water conservation systems. And, they trust the staff at Hygro to pass on their knowledge and provide quality products including locally manufactured plant foods. “The advice we offer can be invaluable to new and experienced growers alike,” Christa says. “We test new products to help ensure effectiveness and compatibility with our Campbell River climate.” Hygro Gardening Supplies is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday 11 to 4. If you have a question call Hygro at 250-286-0424.

Boyd’s Services AnchorFuneral Inn Our society has changed, and Boyd’s Funeral Services has kept pace. If you desire a traditional burial ceremony, Boyd’s is happy to provide one, although the Campbell River location is open to virtually any alternative. “One of the biggest things we’re seeing in our part of the world, and it’s unique to Vancouver Island, is that people want to do more themselves,” explains owner Sandy Poelvoorde. “They don’t want a funeral home to come in, take care of everything and hand them a bill.” Boyd’s will advise about legalities, but it allows people to make their own personalized arrangements, which Poelvoorde says might involve a green burial, a scattering, a backyard barbecue or other unconventional ideas. The people at Boyd’s are sensitive to cultural differences, too. Poelvoorde stresses the importance of not waiting until you’re gone. “We focus a lot on education before you need a funeral. We like to see people well before they ever need it.” Poelvoorde stresses the importance of being informed about funeral options, which she notes many people do not do. “Unlike purchasing a car, which (people) do copious amounts of research for, unlike buying a home, which they also spend a good portion of their life planning for and paying for, a funeral is something 100 per cent of the population is going to do.” Planning while you’re alive means your loved ones won’t be forced to make arrangements, and pay for them, after you’re gone, she notes. “We can’t make it easy, but we can make it easier.”

Dr. Guthy - Decompression Laser Center

Campbell River’s first Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression-Traction (DTS) and Laser Therapy Clinic Campbell River’s first Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression-Traction (DTS) and Laser Therapy Clinic is now open. If you are suffering from low back or neck pain, such as sciatica, herniated, protruded disc, or degenerative disc, associated with neurological symptoms, you may benefit from DTS and Laser therapy. “Spinal Decompression relieves pressure on the spinal nerves through the use of a mechanical traction device applied through a highly sensitive computer,” explains Dr. Guthy. “It’s completely painless and, as the name suggests, non-invasive.”. With spinal decompression’s precise, computer-controlled tension, the appropriate disc levels are gently and painlessly distracted to achieve a negative pressure within the disc. The negative pressure created in the nucleus pulposus allows compressed discs to be re-oxygenated, rehydrated and re-nutrified as they draw in moisture and nutrients from surrounding body tissues as well as promote retraction of bulging or herniated discs. While results obviously vary, Dr. Guthy notes that many Spinal Decompression patients including post-surgical patients and those with long-term chronic pain, are soon able to resume normal activities. For patients with sports or repetitive strain injuries, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis and the like, Dr. Guthy often employs another new, non-invasive treatment: low-intensity laser therapy. “Essentially, the laser initiates a cascade of physiological reactions within the affected area,” she explains. “The result is restoration of cell structure and function; it’s highly effective and has no known side effects.” In addition to a Ph.D and a Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. Guthy is a Certified Functional Work Capacity Evaluator Advanced with a Residency in Industrial Rehabilitation. She is a American Board Certified Senior Disability Analyst and Diplomate and has been in private practice for 33+ years. Dr. Guthy also offers Chiropractic services, prescribes and supplies Custom Casted Foot Orthotics, and employs the use of a stateof-the-art technology the Exer-Rest Whole Body Periodic Acceleration Platform, which has proven beneficial in treating symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, stroke and neuromuscular diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Guthy’s health care team also includes a Registered Massage Therapist in her clinic. Dr. Guthy is always accepting new Chiropractic patients, and Decompression patients. She is located at 103-250 Dogwood Street. For an appointment, call 250-287-3113 or visit www.decompressionlasercenter.com

Warren Burd Motors early 1990’s.

Bill Howich keeps on saying: “Yes, We Can!” At Bill Howich Chrysler, the team’s mission statement is simple: “Yes, We Can!” And, after 25 years delivering on that mission, this year Bill Howich raised the bar with a complete re-design and re-build of his new car dealership. “It was all about service,” Bill says. But, he couldn’t do it to his satisfaction in his old digs. In effect, he tripled the size of his dealership on the North Island Highway with a new showroom that holds seven vehicles instead of one and service bays that accommodate 14 vehicles instead of seven. The notable thing is that even in

his cramped quarters of days gone by, Bill Howich was the first Chrysler dealer on the Vancouver Island to be awarded the Five Star Service Award for exceptional Customer Service. Bill started as a sales manager in 1987 and was given an opportunity to buy into Warren Burd Motors in 1990. Shortly after, it became known as Bill Howich Chrysler Ltd. Next Bill purchased Island Outboards and created Bill Howich RV & Marine. He rounded out his full range of services with the Bill Howich Detail Center and the Bill Howich Clearance Center. Over the years, Bill has gone from 14 to almost 60 employees and he is

looking to grow now that the new facility is up and running. And, when it comes to advancement, Bill believes on promoting from within. CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR From the day we printed our very first paper — back in 1971, The Campbell River Mirror has reported on events, stories and legends. We have followed stories from the spectacular to the every day, we’ve printed it all: fires, accidents, political plans, the public’s questions, businesses on their way up and local careers on their way down, the hottest days of summer and storms of winter. We’ve followed crimes and punishments, performances and players, our hometown teams’ victories, Canadian news and provincial views. We’ve celebrated community underdogs who’ve won and mourned lost loved ones. After more than 40 years we’re still doing our very best to be Campbell River’s newspaper. Your award winning newspaper.
