By Kathy O’Reilly-Taylor Editor Western Forest Products has announced it is switching to continuous shifting a decision local politicians fear will return the North Island to logging camp status. The announcement was made at the Regional District of Mount Waddington board meeting Oct. 20. Continuous shifting will mean four on four off, four on three off, etc. instead of a traditional Monday to Friday work week, however night shift will be eliminated. The news comes on the heels of Western’s decision to centralize operations in Campbell River which affected 14 staff members in total and resulted in the “net loss” of one job in both Woss and Port McNeill. Two WFP representatives appeared as a delegation to discuss the company’s “dramatic” changes Randy Boas, operations manager, and Kindry Mercer, regional engagement coordinator. Mercer explained that Western Forest Products is an amalgamation of Canfor, Pacific Forest Products and MacMillan Bloedel and had seven different sites around the island that were operating as separate business units. The company decided to amalgamate these operations to bring those systems together and to reduce duplication of work. Boas explained the operations were set up logistically for the wood flow, however, “we’re looking for ways to break those traditional boundaries and borders down.”
