Homes for the Holidays Be inspired! The Homes for the Holidays tour has become one of the city’s most popular house tours, a valuable source for unique holiday decorating ideas and an important fundraiser for United Way. The tour features homes volunteered by local Kamloops residents and decorated by Kamloops’ signature designers. Designers work together with retailers to inspire Christmas décor, contemporary flair and I-never-thought-of-that pieces. This year’s tour features many wonderful delights, from Juniper to Aberdeen.

renda and Frank Konken have always had an interest in building quality homes. With their two children preparing to leave home, Frank and Brenda wanted to downsize. They have lived in Juniper Ridge for more than 22 years and wanted to stay there. They found a lot that, with the right house plan, would give them a great view of Kamloops and Kamloops Lake. The home was completed with modern interior finishes combined with exterior rustic fir trim accents. The Konken’s picked an openconcept plan using engineered oak hardwood flooring throughout the main living areas and bedrooms and heated tile in the bathrooms. They kept the colour scheme

simple and classic, allowing them to add expressive pops of colour through paintings, furniture and decor. The light walls keep the house feeling bright and open. They purposefully built a roof over the front and back decks to add a cozy feel for year-round enjoyment. The front deck has a lovely view of the river valley and Kamloops Lake. The back deck overlooks their thriving garden and peaceful private yard. This past summer, Frank started preparing a section of the yard for a pond and waterfall. Brenda and Frank hope that this feature will be completed in the spring, which will add to the tranquil atmosphere of the home and yard that they have worked so hard to create.

he house at 95 Clarke St. was built in 1908 by Evelyn Edward Pickersgill Cunliffe, English remittance man and one of those behind the massive Fruitlands orchard development prior to the First World War. Cunliffe has an old fountain in Riverside Park named after him for his donation to the park. He lived in Kamloops for 50 years. The Dr. Oâ€™Neill family bought the home in 1958 and essentially transformed an English cottage into a large family home, accommodating 10 children. The house has had different families move in and enjoy it over the last 50 years. It possesses amazing landscaping and has had a lot of careful attention

paid to the gardens on its three-quarter of an acre. It is in a natural green belt with deer that roam the yard daily. Chris Mowat and Katrina Munson are a young Kamloops couple with a love for heritage homes. They purchased 95 Clarke St. this year. They are looking to add their own touches to it and update its features while maintaining its bones and charm. The house wows with a grandiose living room including high coffered ceilings lined with windows and great city views. It has many unique rooms with a blend of antique and modern styling.

his home is a new build completed in the fall of 2015 by MDT Homes of Kamloops. The homeowners chose to do custom plan with Original Home Designs and the interior design portion was done by Paula Tommasini. Paula and her husband Mark knew it would be a beautiful home they could raise their family in for years to come. The home is a marriage of function, convenience and contemporary styling, with a nod to current trends and a

timeless appeal. This home feels bright fresh and airy. It has white oak floors, natural stone in many areas throughout the home and crisp white walls, which allow family treasures and art to shine. The spectacular view facing north takes centre stage melding the outside in. Stepping out onto the large expansive deck and yard the view gets even better; allowing for a wonderful spot to end the day with a glass of wine.

United Way’s Impact

eing an only child who spent a lot of time around adults, Megan had trouble fitting in with other kids at school. So she applied to be a little sister through Big Brothers, Big Sisters (BBBS) In-School Mentoring program. She was then introduced to Rebecca and her life was changed. The two have been a match for six years now. “The minute I met Rebecca, I wanted her to be my big sister,” Megan says. “It’s just so much fun to be around each other.” When Rebecca graduated from high school the pair were moved into the adult mentoring program through BBBS and went from spending one hour per week together on school grounds to spending upwards of four hours per week together hanging out at Rebecca’s farm with her horses and animals, going to the movies and having sleepovers. “When I first started I didn’t know what I was getting into,” Rebecca said. “I just thought it was another volunteer opportunity. But seeing Megan grow has helped me grow so much. “This program doesn’t just benefit the little, it benefits the big in so many ways. Life would be a lot duller without Megan.” Megan echoes Rebecca’s sentiments and recommends that any kids who are having trouble at school, getting bullied or pushed around should look into being involved with BBBS because then you have someone to be there for you. “Whenever I need something and I’m too embarrassed to ask my mom, I ask Rebecca,” says Megan.

Megan is so inspired by her relationship with Rebecca that she plans to be an in-school mentor when she turns 15 and have her own little. Studies show that children who are mentored have higher self-esteem, confidence and interest in school and youth who volunteer to mentor are more connected to their communities. For every $1 invested in mentoring, $18 is returned to society. United Way funds this program so all children are given the opportunity to have their lives changed like Megan and Rebecca. he Driedger family has always loved downtown Kamloops, being able to walk to the parks, farmers’ market, out for coffee and to the stores. When a little home that was beyond repair came on the market, they knew it would be a lot of work to fix up, but they were up for the challenge. Due to smaller than average land size, they had to custom design a home that would work for their family, but also for the site. Taking inspiration from Vancouver and other urban homes and working with Ambrose Bowles of Original Home Designs, they created their perfect home. It suits their modern lifestyle, but still blends in with the surrounding area through the brick work and traditional design choices. The family incorporated some fun designs for their two young children, including an under-the-stairs playhouse with its own secret passageway. “We love the whole community spirit of the United Way Homes for the Holidays event,” says homeowner Rachel Driedger. “For us it symbolizes the start of the holiday period and we jumped at the chance to open up our home for such a worthy cause.”

United Way’s Impact How the money raised through Homes for the Holidays is used: At United Way, the money raised in a community stays there and is invested by Community Impact Council members who serve as local United Way champions. They act as advocates, ambassadors and decision-makers for their communities and are known to be the eyes and ears on the ground for us. They let us know of emerging community issues, emergencies, connect us with leaders and resources and give us context when working locally.

Why do we have community impact councils? As our campaigns continue to grow in strength, we must be responsible and accountable for how the money is invested in the community. We can’t do that important work without local champions and decision makers. In total we have 5 Community Funds: • Kamloops • North Thompson • Cariboo • Merritt • Ashcroft/Logan Lake/Cache Creek We have established a Community Impact Council for each one of them. Reception at St. Andrews St. Andrews on the Square is the oldest public building in Kamloops. It was used for its first church service on Christmas Day in 1887, making it the perfect building for the 14th annual Homes for the holidays reception. The building has gone through many restorations over the years and is now a community event space for weddings, art shows, concerts, celebrations of life and more. Thank you to the City of Kamloops and the Kamloops Heritage Society for allowing the 2015 Homes for the Holidays Tour to host its reception at St. Andrews on the Square.
