Gord Johns of Tofino, and the NDP, will be the Member of Parliament for the riding of Courtenay-Alberni after a resounding victory Monday night in the federal election. “We fought hard and got our message out,” Johns said to a happy crowd at the Quality Inn Bayside in Parksville. “We had more than 300 volunteers, people from across political lines. I want to thank my family for supporting me.” Johns earned 26,595 votes (38.1 per cent) to Conservative John Duncan’s 19,631 (28.2 per cent). Liberal Carrie Powell-Davidson had 15,166 (21.8 per cent). More than 76 per cent of registered electors in the riding cast a vote. “It was a hard campaign,” said Johns. “John Duncan served Vancouver Island for two decades. Glenn Sollitt ran a hard campaign and Carrie Powell-Davidson came a long way. We won this race because we had an incredible campaign team — there were a a lot of people who didn’t sleep. Tonight let’s enjoy our victory, tomorrow let’s get to work.” Duncan was in Courtenay as the results came in. “Obviously it’s a sad night for a lot of my friends, my colleagues. This was not the result I was anticipating at all,” Duncan told The Comox Valley Record. “It’s kind of tough… it’s kind of tough, yes. I know that everyone worked as hard they could and I actually thought we had a good message.” Duncan said the national campaign swayed voters, and added “there’s no way around it.

And obviously on this occasion, that’s what happened big time.” Duncan was a Member of Parliament from 1993-2006 and again from 2008-2015. “All good things do come to an end at some point.” Meanwhile, a red wave was sweeping across the country after early returns in the federal election Monday, with a Liberal majority government predicted by most news outlets by 8 p.m. A party needs 170 seats for a majority. When parliament was dissolved for this election, the Conservatives had 159 seats, the NDP 95 and the Liberals 36. On Monday, the Liberals won 184 ridings, the Conservatives 99 and the NDP won 44. The Bloc Quebecois won 10 seats and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has her party’s only seat. Local Liberal candidate Powell-Davidson offered her

congratulations to Johns and said she had no regrets about her campaign. “We’re a little disappointed in not getting this riding but we’re absolutely thrilled with the way it went nationally, so we’ll be celebrating regardless,” Powell-Davidson said Monday night. “My team and I worked our tail feathers off for the last year, I’m really satisfied with the job we did and the way we built the presence of the party in this riding.” Green candidate Sollitt said from Qualicum Beach: “All things considered, actually it’s going OK. I had so many positive interactions. I feel silly saying this, but I wouldn’t have been shocked to have won tonight. Reports pour into police about virus scam

Police are warning residents about a popular computer scam surfacing in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area in recent weeks. Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said homeowners will receive a phone call from someone falsely claiming to be a representative of a reputable computer repair or software company such as Microsoft, then attempt to convince the owner that their computer is infected with a virus. The scammer will then offer to remotely “clean” the computer for a fee. “It’s not difficult to talk people into the idea that they have a virus on their computer,” Foreman told The NEWS. “It seems they are preying on people who maybe haven’t grown up with a computer, that’s why it’s more prominent in our area.” Foreman said he isn’t aware of any residents losing money to this scam, but notes reports continue to come into the detachment. He said the scam is easily avoided and encourages residents to take their computer to a local repair shop, or call a mobile repair specialist, if they think they have a virus. According to a news release issued by police, these scammers have been “very convincing” in recent reports. “Microsoft will not call you, therefore, simply hang up if you receive a similar call,” states the release. If you receive a similar call, police suggest simply hanging up.

Idyllic Nanoose Bay seems deeply divided over the expansion of Beachcomber Marina. A public information meeting Tuesday night was punctuated with out-of-order yells and jeers from the crowd, illustrating a community brimming with contention and competing ideals. The Regional District of Nanaimo-hosted meeting was chaired by area director Bob Rogers with representation from RDN planners, specifically about the marina’s zoning amendment application. With people spilling outside the original room where the meeting was supposed to be hosted, the gathering was relocated last minute to a larger room in Nanoose Place to accommodate the overwhelming response from the community — more than 200 people attend. The proposed changes would add 26 berths to Beachcomber Marina’s 100 mooring slips. RDN regulations require one parking space for every two mooring berths and one space for every two employees meaning the marina would

need a total of 63 parking stalls. Beachcomber owner Ian Barnes put forth the application which would see one portion of the marina ‘downzoned’ from marina designation to standard designation (Water 2 to Water 1), while another area would be ‘upzoned’ from standard designation to marina designation (Water 1 to Water 2). “There’s more than enough room,” said Barnes. “(The space needed for the marina) is just in the wrong place.” Barnes has received approval from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada to make the changes. However, he still needs a permit from the RDN. Rogers confirmed Tuesday’s meeting was “not a decision-making meeting,” rather an opportunity to invite comments from the public on the proposed changes. It’s good news for those who claim there’s a major moorage shortage in the area, especially to accommodate boats over 30 feet, and those who see the expansion as an economic opportunity and attraction for Nanoose Bay. Save for a tinge of green, Vancouver Island went orange in a big way Monday night during the federal election. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May won her seat — Saanich-Gulf Islands — with 54 per cent of the vote. ‘Won her seat’ is an understatement — May had 23,813 votes more than her closest competitor. The wide-margin theme was constant in most of the other six ridings on Vancouver Island, all of which won by NDP candidates. In the 2011 federal election, people in Lantzville and North Nanaimo were part of the riding that included Parksville Qualicum Beach. The boundaries were re-drawn for 2015 and those voters are now part of the NanaimoLadysmith riding. The NDP won big there too, with Sheila Malcolmson taking the seat. She earned 6,270 votes more than her closest rival, Tim Tessier of the Liberals. Mark MacDonald of the Conservatives was third. Continuing south, the NDP’s Alistair MacGregor took CowichanMalahat-Langford with 7,000 more votes than the second-place finisher,

Liberal Luke Krayenhoff. The Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke race was a little closer, with the NDP’s Randall Garrison beating Liberal David Merner by just over 5,000 votes. NDP veteran Murray Rankin won the Victoria riding by about 6,500 votes over second-place finisher JoAnn Roberts of the Green Party. North of Courtenay-Alberni in the North Island-Powell River riding, the NDP’s Rachel Blaney continued the convincing-victory trend with 8,000 more votes than her closest rival, Laura Smith of the Conservatives. While it was a great night for the NDP on the Island, the sam could not be said of the NDP’s national showing. The party that had 95 seats and Official Opposition status after the 2011 election was reduced to 44 seats on Monday night. The Conservatives suffered a similar fate, going from 159 seats at the time parliament was dissolved a few months ago to 99 after Monday’s votes were counted. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday night he would be stepping down as party leader. Duncan, the Conservative whip who was an MP for most of the last two decades and one of Harper’s trusted lieutenants, suggested Monday night that the national campaign— and not Island issues — steered the votes away from Conservatives. “There’s no way around it, that’s what happens,” said Duncan. “And obviously on this occasion, that’s what happened big time.” Duncan told The Comox Valley Record he will spend the next few days clearing out his three offices and preparing for life out of the public eye. “All good things do come to an end at some point,” he said. MacDonald, the Conservatives candidate in Nanaimo-Ladysmith, sounded more bitter

The weather helped a lot, but Qualicum Beach resident Barry Furneaux largely credits re-mineralization with the record success of his and wife Donna’s garden this year. “We’re getting 7.5-pound broccoli, 10 pound cauliflower, all the brassicas (cabbage family) are huge,” he said of the best crop they remember in their 48 years gardening on the property. The couple proudly showed off their largest, a 15 pound cabbage that Donna said was quite sweet and delicious. Barry said the warm temperatures made the tomatoes and squash better, but really credits their work with drip lines, organic fertilizer and careful re-mineralization.

But opposition was apparent with many voicing concern over the proposal’s potential to block neighbouring views of the ocean, increased traffic and pollution, and water and drainage issues. Brian Chatwin, of Nanaimo’s Chatwin Engineering, said the expansion would take away from the value of Nick Shulson’s waterfront property, which stares directly at the proposed expansion area. Chatwin went on to criticize the marina owner, and subsequently the RDN, for not consulting with neighbouring properties before starting the application process for expansion. “Is this a policy you’re going to allow? Is this what you call good planning? And doesn’t it set a nasty precedent?” he asked regional district staff. Nanaimo’s Cunningham and Rivard Appraisals real estate evaluation consultant Dave Curt echoed Chatwin’s comments, saying it would “dramatically” reduce the value of Shulson’s property. “A rezoning generally creates value and in this case it creates value for Beachcomber Marina at the expense of the Shulson property and that’s not fair,” said Curt. “I’m a right winger myself and I like to support anything that’s good for business… But I can’t support this proposal only because it dramatically affects a few landowners.” But that may not be the only reason he can’t support it. Beachcomber resident Joe Ringwald pointed out Chatwin and Curt attended the meeting on behalf of their client, Nick Shulson. “They’re paid to be here,” said Ringwald. “I used to be one of them.” Ringwald recently moved to Nanoose Bay from the Lower Mainland, admitting the final motivation to move came when Beachcomber Marina owner Barnes called to say a moorage space had opened up. He said there’s a big shortage for boat owners in the area and is in favour of the project.

More than 200 people showed up at Nanoose Place Tuesday evening for the Regional District of Nanaimo’s public information meeting about Beachcomber Marina’s zoning amendment application, which may see a configuration and expansion of the existing marina to accommodate an additional 26 boats.

Qualicum Beach resident Nick Bowler, who moors his boat at Beachcomber, said he moved to the Island 13 months ago. “I’m stunned at the lack of moorage,” said Bowler. “I bought a boat in June this year and because I was afraid I wouldn’t get moorage I rented a slip in April… There is such a shortage of moorage on this part of the Island… There is an economic benefit to Beachcomber.” Mistaken Island resident Susan Millar said she’s been going to Beachcomber Marina her entire life and every person who moved to the area was aware there was a marina there. While she noted the expansion may devalue the Shulson’s property, she also pointed out “having a marina that’s well run, well looked after and presentable increases the value of the whole area… I see someone who has put a large investment into improving the marina, improving the protection of the boats… So I’m in favour.” The owner of the marina, Barnes, answered questions during the three-hour meeting from a constant line of people who voiced opposition or support. “We’re not a mainstream marina, we’re a small marina catering to serious local recreational boaters,” Barnes said,

noting there’s a wait list of up to 70 boats at times. “We’re trying to attract more residents to the area.” Near the end of the meeting, Shulson, whose property is arguably most affected by the expansion, spoke out. “What we didn’t hear about was 126 boats with 126 bilges… pumping oil and grease into the bay,” said Shulson. “A captain can’t tell his bilge pump not to do that.” He referred to Nanoose Bay’s official community plan, saying residents value the preservation of the environment, green spaces, viewscapes and beach accesses. “It (the expansion) will put this beach, yes this beach we’ve had for 40 years, it’s the beach my children and myself and my friends have come to visit and they would tie up on our buoy, that’s gone because Mr. Barnes has put a private marina on the buoy. I can’t even tie up there, nobody can, and we’d have no access to the beach,” he said. “The fact is it affects the community in a dramatic way.” A summary of the comments received at this meeting will be provided to the Electoral Area Planning Committee and regional board as part of the application review process. h, the allure of the word ‘change.’ About 10 years ago during his election victory speech, Stephen Harper said the country voted for change. Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau said the same thing on Monday night. It’s entirely possible voters will always want change after a decade of the same party and same leader, so perhaps we can park that word. Instead of focusing on change, let’s grab hold of the optimism that comes with a new government and what it may mean for the people of Parksville Qualicum Beach. While the victory by the NDP’s Gord Johns may not have been a huge surprise, the margin (7,000 votes!) might raise eyebrows. Only 38 per cent of the voters in this riding chose Johns, but in our current system, that was good enough for a convincing victory. The Liberals made a lot of promises on the campaign trail, especially related to infrastructure money. It will be up to Johns to fight for some of that money for Courtenay-Alberni. It would be disappointing to see the Liberals in a year or two trumpet how much they have poured into B.C. infrastructure when all that means is multi-millions for Lower Mainland transportation improvements. Johns seems to have a background that would suggest an understanding of on-the-ground infrastructure challenges. He was a municipal councillor and later a chamber of commerce CEO in Tofino. One cannot do those jobs without understanding the importance of moving goods and services to, from and within the mid-Island region. One cannot do those jobs without understanding the importance of water and the infrastructure needed to secure its future. Johns can speak the language of a city or town councillor. He knows the challenges of tight municipal budgets. He can also speak the language of business and, importantly to Parksville Qualicum Beach, what tourism operators need to continue providing jobs. How much Johns is hindered, how much trouble he will have being heard as a member of the third-ranking party in the House of Commons, remains to be seen. He was tenacious during the campaign, which bodes well in this regard. We offer our congratulations to Gord Johns on his victory and hope he can focus that tenacity on getting some of that promised infrastructure money to our region. — Editorial by John Harding

Wi-Fi issue needs more salter Remember tobacco, asbestos, Thalidomide, etc.? Honest scientists and informed people globally, which includes Parksville Coun. Leanne Salter, are forced to rely on the Internet because mainstream media prevents the public from reading the truth about the dangers of wireless radio devices, which militaries have known since the 1950s. The science of ‘low-level, pulsed NON-thermal radio/microwave frequency radiation’ (radiation), which cell phone towers, baby monitors, smart meters, cell and cordless phones, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth, etc. all emit, is so recondite, that few people understand it. Mayor Marc Lefebvre should note that no regional health authority in B.C. has any education, qualifications or expertise in this form of radiation. They depend on Health Canada (HC) and on B.C.’s Public Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall. Since 1999, I believe Dr. Kendall has been little more than a puppet for HC which, like the U.S., stubbornly refuses to admit that non-thermal radiation can harm people. Lefebvre and council need to realize: • non-industry-paid scientists globally say that the ‘greatest single threat to human health in our entire history, ever, is today’s non-thermal radiation.’ • only industry, governments and those benefiting from the sale of wireless products say they are safe. • not a single wireless product has been pre-market tested by independent scientists to ensure it is safe to be used by, on and around people on a continuous basis in per-

ePCor outrage As a resident of French Creek I was shocked and disappointed by the water rate increases that were recently approved for EPCOR. French Creek residents are already being grossly overcharged for water, as compared to at least one other local community. Here is a comparison of the actual water consumption, and costs, for two residential units — one in French Creek, with water supplied by EPCOR, and the other in Qualicum Beach, with water supplied by the town. The period covered is Oct. 1, 2014 to Sept. 30, 2015. Qualicum Beach water consumption: 154 (cubic metres). French Creek: 185. Amount billed, Qualicum Beach — $108. Amount billed, French Creek — $510.88. So, while the occupants of the French Creek home used a bit more water than those in the Qualicum Beach home (20 per cent more) they were billed more than four times as much. Something is terribly wrong here. How can EPCOR get away with such overcharging? Bear in mind that these numbers do not reflect a full year of the new, much higher

PV Water threat? Having just received our latest water/ sewer bill (I own property in Parksville), I find that included in the envelope there is an insert from the City of Parksville attempting to support their referendum on the water treatment issue. Or is this just an attempt at intimidation on the part of the city? We note all the good things that will happen if we are stupid enough to be taken in by a $5.6 million expenditure that will not produce one more ounce of domestic water and that we may be giving the control of our water to another agency. On the other hand, we are being threatened with the possibility of higher risks of a water supply issue. Why? We are not getting any more water, so our water supply will not be lower. We may have to boil our water. Really? We have not had to boil our water in the last 30 years that I have been in this community, why all of a sudden now? Will someone punish us because we did not get sucked down another Parksville rabbit hole? The list goes on. It would be a good idea if all taxpayers in Parksville read this brochure. Eschewing vanity, columnist admits he’s... 40+20... or 50+10...

ctober 30 is my birthday. I share it with the Fonz. I only mention that because some people think the way we stack up to someone famous is a touchstone for our own accomplishments. Unlike Henry Winkler, I never acted in a hit TV show or earned millions, but does that mean I regret never being a star? Certainly not — although I must admit that I say “Aaayyy” with a great deal of panache. My next birthday is a special one. It’s a milestone, you might say. I guess that’s why my brother called to remind me about it. “Hey, bro, so it’s a big birthday By Ray Smit coming up in a couple of weeks. Do you feel old?” “Nope. In fact, it’s amazing that I still don’t look a day over 35.” “Say what?” “No seriously, I haven’t got one wrinkle,” I enthused. “I don’t think you have ‘one’ wrinkle either,” Jay retorted. “You may jest, but I’m practically a kid.” “We had this same conversation when you turned fifty. Face up to it, you’re gonna be sixty!” “I am not! I’m only 40-something.” “Well then you’ve been 40-something for 20 years. For Pete’s sake you were born in 19—” “Never mind, I know when I was born.” “Look Ray, now that you’re older, why don’t you stop worrying about appearances and start developing your intellect?” “Well, I did watch PBS the other day.” “That’s a good start. What were you watching?” “Curious George...” “I give up. Look, I’ll call you again on your birthday — your 60th birthday!” To my mind there are three sure signs of turning 60. The first one is memory loss. Of course that doesn’t worry me, because, I’m not

sixty. Someone probably just made a silly error on my birth certificate. By the way, I should remember to mention that there are three sure signs of turning 60. And the first one is memory loss. The second sure sign that someone has turned the big six-o is nostalgia. When people begin their seventh decade, they seem to think that everything old is great and everything new is lousy. I’m not like that. I love all the new singers: Paul McCartney; Mick Jagger; Petula Clark. There’s no way I’m stuck in the past. My house has all the latest electronics gadgets too including a VCR, reel to reel tape recorder and a telephone answering machine! Mind you, I do think the term ‘rap music’ is an oxymoron and tweets are for the birds, but that doesn’t make me old — just discerning. The third and final sure sign of turning sixty is hair loss. Fortunately, my pompadour is just as thick as ever — at least at the back and sides. The top is another matter. That concerned me for a while until I remembered that most men start going bald in their 20s. So, if anything, I’m looking even younger than before! All of which brings me back to the big day. Turning 60 is like accidentally driving the wrong way down a one-way street. You hope nobody notices… but they always do! My advice is to eschew vanity and tell the unvarnished truth. If you’re 60, just say so. Of course that doesn’t apply to me. I’m not 60! I’m 50-ten... and holding.

Ballenas Secondary special needs students now have extra guidance in their Thrifty Foods work experience. Geoffrey Trimble, who has autism and was recently featured in The NEWS (Oct. 14), is excited that his shifting duties at the Parksville store now include mentoring the students. Two BSS groups, Life Skills and Strive, each spend a few hours a week in the store getting real world retail experience and working on their social and teamwork skills.

“He works with all the kids,” said Thrifty Foods’ Karen Little who coordinates the programs. “It’s been an extremely positive experience for everyone and he’s really doing well with it, it seems to be good for him.” The small student groups spend an hour and half “facing” products on shelves and learning about things like ladder and lifting safety and gaining experience. “I think that the community involvement piece really helps our students and assists them in making the

connections between the skills they learn at school and those that are needed in the real world,” BSS vice principal Jane Reynolds said previously. Trimble was featured for National Disability Awareness Employment Month, October, and his sister and advocate Withanie Lemke praised the Parksville Thriftys for “setting an example of what could happen when managers take the time to listen, learn and adapt,” which she encourages others to do.

It is banned for use in Canada. The government has promised compensation for dairy producers, which would be funded by the taxpayers. As things stand now, they receive no benefits from the taxpayer. This would continue NAFTAs spawn where corporations can — and have been with relish — sue countries/provinces/cities, etc. if they have been denied access to making a profit from natural resources, environmentally sensitive areas, labour pools, social policies and others. They can even sue for potential profits. Canada has the dubious distinction of being the second-mostsued country in the world. A major petroleum corporation is suing a South American country for more

Charge The losT A record so far this year for the number of extremely costly rescues on Grouse Mountain and other areas. Why are these people not charged for these costs? I would imagine the helicopter alone is around $1,500/hour. With over 100 calls, heli time alone would be in the $200,000 range so far this year. The equipment is expensive and thefts have occurred. As a taxpayer, I am sick and tired of paying for someone else’s stupidity. Start charging the entire cost of rescue or charge a significant entry fee. Let’s start at $25/person. My thanks to the pilots for their amazing skills. This type of flying is the most demanding and stressful in the helicopter industry. Whatever they are paid isn’t enough.

Club Celebrates 25 years

With brightly attired dancers moving to the beat, a succession of performers took their spot at the turntable and the microphone Friday night in Coombs. Freestyle lyrics and dance-mix platters lifted the crowd — at least one with vivid streaks of purple and blue colour shot through her hair — out of its chairs and onto the floor. A techno-pop rave or hiphop show? Nah. This was the original night out at the club — an evening of square dancing with Parksville’s Silver Dollars Square Dancers. “It’s a great time; that’s what it’s all about,” said Ray Schmidt, the club’s caller — or what kids might refer to as a DJ. Friday’s festivities marked the Sand Dollars’ 25th anniversary in Parksville. It was attended by dancers from clubs in Lantzville, Powell River, Campbell River and the Comox Valley and beyond. Ken Crisp of Port Coquitlam, current president of the B.C. Square/Round Dance Federation, presented the club with a

25-year patch and past president Norm Cox of Surrey presented a certificate marking the milestone. The night also marked 40 years of calling for 86-year-old John McArthur, who took the mic for one “tip,” or series of dances. He and his wife Lorraine were given a pair of mugs

by Crisp to mark their own achievement. “John is amazing,” said Debra Schmidt, Ray’s wife and fellow caller. “He taught us, and we hope we’re as good as him one day.” To the uninitiated, square dance calling may seem a semicoherent word salad running through the two-step music

it overlays. In actuality, those words are instructions to the eight dancers who make up each square. “They’re dancing to the call, and you’re calling to the music,” said McArthur. In essence, the caller spends the dance breaking down the square, chasing the

dancers through a series of allemandes, promenades and partner switches before — hopefully — reassembling the square as the music ends. Dancers must know the commands to effectively participate, and have to pay attention to the seemingly infinite number of combinations available to the caller. “You make a puzzle and put it back together, but the dancers don’t know what you’re going to do until you open your mouth,” Lorraine McArthur said. “They’re following exactly what the caller says to do. And he’s got 68 moves in which to juggle them around with.” “You sit and work them around,” John added with a chuckle. “Sometimes you can work them around pretty good.” Awash in a sea of pink — the Sand Dollars’ club colours — Friday’s dancers reveled in a night of smiles and laughter, even on the occasions when their squares broke down. That’s because they still have the chance to dance. “Sand dollars doesn’t have enough members anymore,” Lorraine said. “It’s very low on membership. Carol Marion McCausland October 22, 1933 – October 8, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carol on October 8, 2015 at the Palliative Care Unit of Nanaimo Hospital in her 81st year. Carol was born October 22, 1933 in Minnedosa, Manitoba. After graduating from Minnedosa Collegiate, Carol earned a Bachelor’s in Interior Design from the University of Manitoba. After marrying Harry Douglas (“Doug”) McCausland on October 7, 1960, Carol moved with him to Guelph, Ontario. There, she helped put Doug through college - since he was training at the Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph) - by teaching Home Economics at the MacDonald Institute on the same campus. Carol and Doug moved to Abbotsford, BC in the summer of 1965 and started their family and business soon afterward. They remained in Abbotsford for forty years. Even as Carol carried out the role of homemaker as the children were growing up, she carried out various projects related to interior design in her additional role as partner of Doug’s company, McCausland Consulting. She also earned a Diploma of Fine Arts from Fraser Valley College (now known as University of the Fraser Valley). Soon afterward, she put her considerable artistic talent to good use by producing various works of watercolour art that she generously gave to family members and friends, and showcased at different festivals. Sometime in the early 1970’s, Carol came to faith in Jesus Christ and His crosswork on her behalf. Since that time, Carol’s trust in her Lord and Saviour has shown itself in many ways, including ministering to seniors; giving her time, resources and leadership to schools and organizations; and simply being a faithful friend, mother and wife. She was loved by many for being a lively, spirited, humourous, supportive, and warm-hearted person. Carol is survived by her beloved husband, Doug; daughter, Nan; sons, Andrew, Patrick, and Sean; son-in-law, Hideki Ami; daughters-in-law, Deonne and Shiela McCausland; grandchildren, Stephen, Drew, Meghan, Anna, Jonathan, Aiden, Matthew, Callum, and Bryce; beloved children-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins; and many valued friends. Norm passed peacefully at Malaspina Garden Care Facility in Nanaimo on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the age of 88. He leaves to mourn his passing his first wife, Elaine (Low) Strome of Parksville; sister, Margaret Anderson of Parksville; daughters, Shirley (Murray) Lamotte of Parksville, Debbie (Lee) Lynch of Edmonton, Michelle Livingston of Vancouver; sons, Kenneth of Vancouver, David (Carmen) of Edmonton, Darryl (Jennifer) and Brian (Paula) of Fort Nelson; grandchildren, Colin (Sarah), Jasmine (Joel), Allan, Jason (Rica), Margaret, Shane (Mandie) Kyle (Naomi), Ryan, Todd, Darylann, Rebekah, Lauryn, and Brian Jr.; great grandchildren, Tatyana, Nathaniel, Dylan, Jonah, and Jaxon; brotherin-law, Cliff Pollock; nephews, Michael, Mark & Scott Watson (fishing buddy), Lee (Carmen) Pollock, Dean Pollock; niece, Patty (Kerry) Doyle; as well as many great nieces and nephews; longtime friends, John Murton, fellow Ham operator, Bill Hodson, and many members of the local Ham Radio Club. Norm was predeceased by his parents, Ida (nee Thompson) and Harry Low; sister, Marianne Pollock; second wife, Margaret (nee Schill) Low; and brother-in-law, Jim Anderson. Born in Red Deer, Alberta to Ida and Harry Low, Norm spent his early years as a prairie farm boy. Although his hopes of becoming a pilot through Air Cadet Training were over when the war ended, flying remained his passion. He graduated from SAIT in Calgary in 1952 as an electronic technician. For approximately 12 years he was employed by CNT as a repeaterman/manager along the Alaska Highway communication system in Canyon Creek, Yukon and Coal River, Wonowon, and Fort Nelson BC. Leaving CNT, Norm’s interest in the motion pictures lead him to the theatre business as a projectionist, owner, operator in Thorsby, Fort Nelson, Hudson Hope, Olds, and Innisfail. Finally settling in Parksville in the 80’s, he reopened and operated the Park Theatre until 1992. Norm obtained his private pilot’s licence in the 60’s, flying extensively in northern BC and beyond. As the flying years ended, he enjoyed many years on his fishing boat out of Schooner Cove with family and friends. During all these years of adventure and careers, Norm was active for 65 years in Ham Radio, presently VE7ATA.

Jo Anne LYNCH (nee Bonnyman) March 19, 1933 â€“ October 14, 2015 Jo Anne passed away at home, after a busy day of walking Tinker, doing yoga with Kay, and deck painting with her daughter. It is with a heavy heart that our family announces the passing of Francis Kroot (nee Schoones). After 84 years, Francis died peaceably on September 17, with family at her bedside. Francis was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Nick Kroot, and is survived by her children, Hetty, Jerry, Nick and Patricia, fourteen grandchildren, 11 great grand children and by her sister Anne, who resides in Holland, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in both Canada and Holland. Francis was born on March 23, 1931 in the small village of Waspick in Holland. She married Nick Kroot in 1954 and shortly thereafter immigrated to Canada. After living 11 years near Edmonton, Alberta, Nick, Francis and family, moved to the Parksville area of Vancouver Island, arriving in the spring of 1965. In 1967 they purchased 10 undeveloped acres in Coombs and began to build the farm that they always wanted. During her life, Francis was a good friend to many, listening, commiserating or laughing with them. Francis was an avid gardener. Her table was graced with the fruits of her labour, and her home was filled with the fragrance and beauty of the flowers she grew. She was also a keen knitter and seamstress, creating items that the family treasures to this day. Nick and Francis also enjoyed dancing. From house parties to events at the Coombs hall, Nick and Francis could be seen swirling around the dance floor, in perfect step and harmony. By far Francisâ€™ greatest love was that for her family. First and foremost Francis was a homemaker of the finest caliber, lending her love and support unconditionally to her husband Nick and to all of us. As a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, she will be sorely missed. We invite all who knew Francis to attend a gathering at the Arrowsmith Hall on

The CDC recently reviewed statistics on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The primary cause of COPD is smoking and the quality of life impact and economic burden are significant. SCD is associated with heart arrhythmias - which can be triggered by COPD â€“ but also high heart rates, hypoxia, cardiac ischemia, and heart failure, which are also related to COPD. Itâ€™s an unfortunate effect of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) that it reduces exercise tolerance. That said, exercise is exactly what can slow the deterioration in airflow obstruction and health status. Additionally, the lack of exercise can lead to muscle atrophy, limiting vitality in general. Although it takes more effort to break this physical and emotional inertia, the resulting improvements in quality of life are well worth it. Lung cancer is not the only concern when it comes to smoking â€“ so many people live day-in/day-out with limitations posed by conditions such as COPD. Smoking cessation is critical to improved health â€“ our pharmacists can help you quit!

A short-handed Ballenas Secondary School Whalers senior football team was in tough last weekend against the Carson Graham Eagles as they battled it out in their second regular season game. The Eagles would prove to be too much for the injury-plagued Whalers, handing Ballenas a 35-7 loss on their home turf. “It was a tough loss,” coordinator Mike Seselja said. “We’ve been hit with the injury bug pretty hard here and that’s never easy for any team.” “Not having starters in some key positions, both on offense and defense, has been a challenge for us but these kids are still giving it all they’ve got,” Seselja said. In their previous game, the senior Whalers lost starting quarterback Garrin McDonnell and starting offensive and defensive lineman Steve Martin to injuries.

The juniors were in action Wednesday against Spectrum (score not available at press time). The juniors are ranked provincially, first place in their division and unbeaten on the season so far.

The Kwalikum Kondors added another victory Tuesday in Nanaimo, needing penalty kicks to earn a 5-4 win over Woodlands. Coming off a 4-0 win last week over Dover Bay, the Kondors worked extra hard to remain undefeated in league play. With goals coming from Blair Stewart (two goals), Daniel Doukakis and Tyler Lucente, the Kondors found themselves square with the Woodlands Eagles. Every Kondor who stepped up for a shot would score, with goalkeeper Nolin Fong making a save on the Eagles second shooter, giving them the 5-4 win.

“It was a tough game,” senior Tony Trozzo said. “We knew it was going to be another tough match and Woodlands was everything we figured they’d be. Fortunately for us, we battled hard and stayed with them the entire game and had the chance to come away with the win on PKs, which we did.” “Finishing league play without a loss feels great but we’ve got another tough test coming up against Gulf Island next week.” KSS will play Gulf Island Secondary for first seed in the North Island playoffs. On Saturday night, Aubrey “Bam Bam” Morrow will step into the ring for the biggest fight of his career, taking on Francis Lafreniere for the Canadian Middleweight Championship. Taking place in Repentigny, Quebec, the champion Lafreniere will have the homecrowd advantage. For Morrow and coach Rich LeStage, it doesn’t matter where the fight is, it all comes down to what happens in the ring once the bell sounds. “We’ve been the underdog before,” Morrow said. “So it’s something that I’m used to dealing with. Honestly, once I come out to the ring, I’m not thinking about anything except our game plan and my opponent, the crowd becomes secondary.” “They’re not going to be the ones in the ring with me, it’s going to be just the two of us in there and that’s all I need to worry about.” With training behind him, Morrow flew to Quebec on Wednesday to adjust to the time change and his new surroundings before the biggest fight of his career. “It’ll be good to get there and breathe,” Morrow said. “Once we get to wherever it is I’m fighting, I’m always looking forward to taking that first deep breath and getting used to where we’re at. Earlier this summer, the duo travelled to California for a week of sparring and training, including a session inside the Wildcard Gym, home to world famous trainer Freddie Roach. Back home, Morrow has been down to Victoria on a number of occasions, putting work in at Peterecs MMA, Victoria Martial Arts, as well as spending time over on the Mainland and right here at Kickstart Fitness. “It’s been a real big help,” Morrow said. “Getting differ-

ent looks at different styles of opponents helps a lot, it gives you lots of different ways of going about things in the ring and let’s you see things that you normally might not see with just one or two sparring partners.” It’s going to be a challenge but Morrow is ready and raring to go and will be looking to have some extra luggage on his flight home. “I’m ready to go, I can’t wait,” Morrow said. “We’ve got a good game plan in place but if it gets down to a dog fight, I’ve got what it takes to put him down.” “I’m there, I can’t wait to win and bring that belt back home and celebrate. The Clubman shares engine choices withh the rest of the Mini clan; a base three-cylinder with 102 horsepower, the Cooper’s three-cylinder at 136 horsepower, or the Cooper S’s four-cylinder with 192. Transmission choices are the six-speed manual, or a new eight-speed automatic. BMW’s usual arsenal of road-conquering technologies are either built in or are available. The Stockholm area presented a few challenges. Firstly, it is city of 14 islands, with hundreds more nearby. This means a lot of water, which means a lot of bridges - and a good number of ferries. The rolling, lake-studded Canadian Shield-like landscape northeast of Stockholm does present inviting stretches - but the tempting country roads are home to the very vigilant police force, and dreaded Blue Meanies. Once the Clubman broke free from these constraints, its inner go-kart was revealed. There was never any doubt that there was more Mini than usual to throw around, but fun could be summoned - especially with Sport mode selected. The manual certainly kept it real, but the automatic really needed to be in its own Sport mode to simulate the experience. This new six-door strikes a nice compromise between Mini mania and multitasking. Like the car, the families who take delivery after the Clubman shows up in showrooms early next year are growing out, not up. The Mini Cooper Clubman starts at $24,990, the Mini Cooper S Clubman at $28,990. Of course, these being Minis means infinite (almost) options and individualization, which would take you north of that pretty quickly.

According to data from TrueCar.com, in 2012 the average new car cost $30,500. That’s a considerable expense, especially at a time when fuel costs remain high and cost of living continues to rise. Because new cars are a significant investment, more and more vehicle owners are looking for ways to extend the life of their vehicles. Adhering to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protecting various

components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicle’s oil every 3,000 miles, many of today’s newer automobiles need their oil changed less frequently. Check your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations regarding oil changes, and don’t forget to replace the oil filter when changing your vehicle’s oil. * Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal. * Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires’ life expectancy is reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. * Take care of your vehicle’s interior, too. Caring for a car is not just about being good to what’s under the hood. Caring for the car’s interior will not necessarily impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will improve how you look at your vehicle and how much you enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve the vehicle’s door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicle’s interior, whether it’s cloth or leather. Keeping up the appearance of the car’s interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and increase its value at resale.
