The City of Victoria is getting set to launch a new program that will turn a number of graffiti hot spots into murals. The program, slated to be launched later this month, will match professional artists with youth interested in public art, then create murals in six locations throughout Victoria and surrounding neighbourhoods. “It’s a form of trying to prevent some of the tagging, but it’s also to get people who are interested in street art an opportunity to work with a professional artist to do some beautification,” said Gary Pemberton, downtown programs liaison with the City of Victoria. “Graffiti is just ongoing. It’s like the mail. It never stops. It keeps happening every night.” Graffiti has been an ongoing problem in Victoria for a number of years. The subculture in the city dates back to the mid eighties when almost every alley in the downtown core was heavily tagged with large pieces. Today, Pemberton

said there’s about 10 to 15 active vandals, ranging in age from 12 to 40, who create the bulk of the vandalism. They tag all types of infrastructure, from power poles and mail boxes, to walls and etching glass. Every week, the Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA) removes an average of 100 tags that come in all shapes and sizes within their downtown boundaries. Most tags at street level in the downtown core are removed within 24 hours, but city staff are seeing a rise in larger tags high up on rooftops, which take more time to remove. Now that school is back in session, Pemberton expects to see an increase in graffiti vandalism not only on school property, but also in the surrounding neighbourhoods. Getting in front of the problem and prosecuting a vandal is difficult since the crimes usually take place in the middle of the night. The city often relies on video surveillance from businesses to help catch vandals in the act. A 17-year-old charged with more

than 30 counts of mischief relating to graffiti was recently handed a $1,200 fine and one-year probation after pleading guilty to six counts. Pemberton believes the teen was responsible for more than 300 tags in his career in Victoria alone. “We are always chasing it. It’s hard to get in front... but I think we’ve done a good job at staying on top of it and maintaing it so it’s definitely not getting worse,” Pemberton said. The city’s current property maintenance bylaw states that property owners are responsible for the removal of graffiti on their property within 14 days of being served official notice by the city. The city also partners with volunteer group, Victoria Together Against Graffiti (VTAG) to aid in removing tags from hydro poles in each neighbourhood. The program has supported approximately 50 ongoing volunteers to paint over graffiti on power poles. Detectives with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) have investigated more homicides in Victoria this year than in previous years. As of September, the unit has recorded six deaths in Victoria so far this year – four of which have been deemed a homicide and two still being treated as a suspicious death. Last year, the unit recorded one homicide in Esquimalt, a suspicious death in Victoria, and began investigating the disappearance of Dana McKeller, who went missing from his Victoria home on Sept. 2. The 51-year-old’s body was found nine months later at a rural property on Goward Road in Saanich. Sgt. Brad Fraser with VIIMCU said the number of homicides and suspicious deaths this year are a bit higher compared to the five-year average, but there doesn’t appear to be any trends. “Fortunately, Victoria doesn’t have any real big gang wars going on, nothing like the Lower Mainland. These deaths, for the most part, are associated,” said Fraser, adding it doesn’t appear any of the victims and their killers were strangers. “These deaths are the result of just people’s interactions with one another...But there are some historical files where it’s going to be a stranger that is likely responsible for that homicide.” In 2010, police recorded one homicide in Victoria,

But the numbers could easily be higher. According to Fraser, there have been a few situations where people have been severely injured due to violence, but paramedics have prevented them from becoming another homicide victim. Community involvement in safe streets has also helped keep the murder rate low. “There’s definitely some community involvement in people looking after one another,” said Fraser, noting police also receive a tremendous amount of support from the community when it comes

to homicide investigations. “You don’t always get that with every type of crime. Murders, it’s different. People say this person lost their life and I want to help.” The first death this year involved a female and occurred on Jan. 19. Fraser called the case sensitive as the investigation started with an assisted suicide and has yet to be determined whether there was anything criminal. On Jan. 25, Richard Pilling died after he was assaulted by another elderly patient in the seniors psychiatry unit at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Nearly a month later, Peter Hunter Thompson was found dead in his James Bay apartment in the 400 block of Michigan Street. Police said there were no

signs of forced entry into the 49-year-old’s suite. The cause of death has not been released. On March 13, Mary Caitlin Walton was found dead in the upper level suite of her Victoria duplex at 830 Queens Avenue. In an apparent suicide attempt, her husband was later found inside his running car in the closed garage of his Colwood home. Police said it appears to be a case of domestic violence. Daniel Blake Penney has been charged with seconddegree murder. The last death occurred on April 9, when the body of Shaun Alexander McGregor was found inside a second-floor suite in Fernwood Manor Apartments, located on 1575 Begbie Street.

Investigators have not released the cause of the 34-year-old’s death, who had an extensive criminal record mainly for offences in the Nanaimo area. Early Tuesday, police responded to the death of an 18-month-old girl in the 1200 block of Vista Heights. The girl’s death is being treated suspicious at this time. VIIMCU has a total of 21 sworn investigators from the RCMP, Saanich and Victoria police who investigate suspicious deaths and homicides throughout Vancouver Island and the surrounding islands. Cameron Bradley has been compared to Grizzly Adams and a Sasquatch. “I take it as a compliment,” laughed the 28-year-old Fernwood resident. Bradley’s pride and joy is currently his big, bushy red beard — one that he’s been growing for the past nine months and will take him to the 2015 World Beard and Moustache Championships next month in Austria. His fascination with beards began in high school. In Grade 9, he could grow a small patch of hair, but after years of shaving, he’s now able to sculpt his facial hair into almost any type of configuration. Bradley has grown moustaches, sole patches, a chin strap, a goatee, a mutton and sideburns, but has grown fond of the mother of all facial hair — the beard. “I like that you can totally change your image. My mom was always totally envious that she can’t grow a beard. She said it’s great that you can change your image,” said Bradley, adding he does attract attention with his beard. “You can play around with things.” Seven years ago, while Bradley was watching the Outdoor Life Network, he first

It was always in the back of his mind to both attend and enter as a participant. Last year, that’s exactly what he decided to do. As part of the championships, 21 countries and 350 participants will compete in 25 categories including sideburns, moustaches, beards and manipulations. Bradley and his beard, Honeybeard

(named because he loves honey), will be competing in the natural beard category, against the same men he would have seen on TV seven years ago. “It’ll be cool to see these guys with octopuses for beards. One made a cage and had a bird sitting in it. It will be cool to see these people and talk shop,” he said. While the past few months he’s been concentrating on growing the beard as thick and lush as it

can be, Bradley said he’ll start to maintain it more carefully in preparation for the competition, lathering on his own balm that he’s concocted from natural oils. “I won’t need a scarf when it gets chilly and I don’t need as much sunscreen,” he laughed. “Life’s too short not to grow a beard.” The World Beard and Moustache Championships take place from Oct. 2 to 4 in Leogang, Austria. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

After a busy day of chauffeuring kids to soccer practice, swimming lessons and piano recitals, sometimes that extra stop to pick up groceries is one stop too many. Which is why Save-On-Foods has brought its successful grocery pickup service to its Saanich Plaza location from the Mainland. Shoppers preorder online, and while waiting in a designated pick-up lane at the Saanich Plaza store, staff will bring the food to you. The Saanich Plaza location is the first on

the Island to do so. “It’s not just what’s in the flyer, it’s everything in our store,” said store manager Lionel Gjerde. “There’s a lookup, so if you’re looking for a specific item, you just go to the lookup, you pick what you want, add it to your shopping cart and away you go. “Pharmacy, bakery, deli – you name it, it’s all on the screen.” Save-On-Foods currently offers its pickup service in Abbotsford, North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, New Westminster, South Surrey and Langley. Gjerde said the Saanich Plaza location’s

proximity made it an ideal spot to kickoff pickup service on the Island. “It’s central, great parking, great access in and out with Vernon Avenue and Blanshard Street,” he said. “It just makes sense to be able to do your order online, drop in, pick it up and carry on.” The service is free for orders $40 or more. The store has converted two parking spaces into a pickup lane. Shoppers just need to use the intercom when they arrive and staff will rush out with their groceries. Orders placed before noon can be picked up the same day after

4 p.m., with orders placed after noon ready the next day. But Saanich Plaza won’t be alone for long with the pickup service. Gjerde said the Tillicum Save-OnFoods is about two or three weeks away from launching its own pickup service. He added that during the ordering process, customers can select which location is best for them to pick up their groceries. “Even if you lived over by Tillicum, if our location is better because that’s where you’re going to be that day and you want to take it home or take it to a barbecue, then you can pick whatever location you want,” he said. Gjerde said the service is convenient and ideal for anyone on the go, and can be customized to suit a variety of needs. He said orders can be placed for pickup at later dates, making the service handy when returning from a trip or vacation. “When you come back from a vacation, you go home, what’s the first thing? The memories from Bernice Kamano’s painful past are still fresh in her memory. Kamano was just nine months old when she was taken from her mother and father and placed in the foster care system in Vancouver. “I was a sick child. My mother took me to the hospital. Because my mother was aboriginal, I was apprehended,” said Kamano, who was a keynote speaker at the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness’ annual general meeting at the First Metropolitan United Church Tuesday. For years, she jumped from home to home, never having a stable roof over her head. As a child, she has very vivid memories of her experience living in an orphanage. Kamano’s picture was published in a local newspaper

asking for people to adopt her, but she never was. On another occasion, children in the orphanage lined up and adults would choose which child to take out on a day trip. “It was a painful life. I pretty much had no family and lived alone, isolated and abandoned,” said Kamano, adding she battled addiction when she was older. “That pain never leaves you. People think you should get over it, but you don’t. It’s part of who you are. But what the pain doesn’t do anymore is take you out.” Now, the 67-year-old Victoria resident is standing tall and living in a home she can call her own. “It’s really nice to be secure. Living in foster care all the time, the concept of living in a home wasn’t really a part of my reality,” Kamano said. “But now that I am in a home. It’s my place and I can do what I want.” Kamano, a member

of the Kwakwaka’waka Nation, is currently using her own experience to help the aboriginal homeless community and help end homelessness in Victoria. At the AGM, Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps also kicked off a new homelessness awareness campaign, calling on the federal government to increase its investment in social housing by 0.6 per cent. “We can see this stepping back — ongoing homelessness, people who are housing in increasing housing need, unstable housing, increased health and social service costs, death due to lack of shelter,” she said. “All we need is to increase the investment in social housing to 1.6 per of the federal budget and we can solve the problem.” There needs to be 367 affordable housing units to end homelessness in the region, according to the coalition. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

Service B.C. opens one stop shop Victoria is now home to the province’s newest Service B.C. centre. The new Greater Victoria Service B.C. centre officially opened its doors last week, and provides a one-stop location for a variety of services ranging from liquor licensing to B.C. Hydro payments and voter registration. According to the province, the new centre will provide in-person, frontcounter service for B.C.’s vital statistics

agency, the residential tenancy branch and the ministry of social development and social innovation. It’s also a place to apply for a marriage licence and get information about renting an apartment or looking for a job. “Service B.C. is a great example of how we can deliver a wide range of services without wrapping people up in red tape or wasting resources,” said Amrik Virk, minister of technology,

innovation and citizen’s services. “Now Victoria residents have one central place where they can access government services and trained professionals who are ready to help.” The centre, located at 403 771 Vernon Ave., will also offer new hearing loop technology for clients with hearing disabilities. B.C. staff directly to the hearing aids of clients. Six community terminals will provide support to people who are job hunting or looking for other selfservice options. The new centre is part of the government’s plan to reduce red tape for the public by streamlining and simplifying processes. There are now 62 Service B.C. centres located throughout the province.

Graffiti vandalism a never ending problem It’s hard to comprehend what goes through the mind of a graffiti vandal. Every year, they cost the city and property owners thousands of dollars and endless amounts of time to paint over the markings they leave behind. Some believe it’s art, but most of it is simply vandalism. Many of the vandals are “taggers” (illegal graffiti signature), who leave their mark on property for a number of reasons. According to police, it’s a destruction of property-type mentality for many graffiti vandals. They are also out there trying to get street credit and recognition within the graffiti subculture. This is something that’s important to them. The more their tag is splashed across the city, the more they are known. They paint tags on all types of infrastructure, from power poles and mail boxes to walls and etching glass. Officials with the City of Victoria estimate about 10 to 15 active vandals, ranging in age from 12 to 40, are responsible for creating the bulk of the vandalism. Every week, the Downtown Victoria Business Association removes an average of 100 tags that come in all shapes and sizes within their downtown boundaries. Getting in front of the problem is a never ending battle. The city is hoping a new program that matches youth interested in public art with professional artists to create murals in six “graffiti hot spot” locations will help curb the problem. But what’s stopping vandals from spraying their tag over the art work? Spray painting public and private property under the cover of darkness in the middle of the night is a criminal act. Unless these criminals are caught and handed hefty fines for their actions, they’ll continue painting their tag wherever they please. Readers respond: Boycott U.S., refugees, and institutions Boycott the United States Recently in the news, so the big bad U.S.A has rattled its sabre again and immediately Mayor Lisa Helps jumps to attention saying that she’s ready and willing to go ahead with a sewage plan to stop raw sewage going into the ocean. When are they going to stop telling people what to do? We Canadians are a laid back lot and will get the job done when we are ready. The Seattle Times is telling Americans to boycott our fair city, but they should remember that it was Canadians who kept the stores in the Bellis Fair mall in Washington State in the black during their recession, so now it’s time for them to help us out during ours, or maybe we Canadians should boycott the U.S.A because of all the gun violence going on over there when we pull out of our recession. Refugees are a great asset I am delighted to see the premier take a positive position on the Syrian refugee crisis. Sadly it is too little far too late. Courageous men and women have been struggling for years to reach our shores and yet it wasn’t until a major tragedy shocked the world that the free nations acted. Shame! Far from being a drain on resources,

refugees are a great asset. They create an immediate stimulus to the economy. Over time the new energy and skills they bring with them create even more economic stimulus and a larger tax base to provide increased services to all. Canada could, in my view, accommodate 10 million newcomers without denting our land base or resources. I heartily endorse every effort to bring more of these people to our country. That said I have to ask this question: What conscience awakening tragedy will it take before all levels of government stop the mind numbing talk about ending the disgrace of our own homelessness problem here in one of the most affluent countries on earth? These are not strangers. These are our own sons and daughters, grandchildren, aunts, uncles and yes perhaps for some even a mother or a father. Our civic governments squander countless thousands on pop-up toilets and rainbow crosswalks. Authorize scandalous overages amounting to millions of dollars on an ill-conceived bridge project. The total of all these needless expenditures, if applied to addressing the needs of the homeless, would have seen the majority of these less fortunate individuals adequately housed and some at least on the road to a new and productive beginning. Why must we wait until another dead body shocks our social conscience before we stop talking and act? Raym Forbes Victoria

Restructuring Canadian institutions Over the past decade, I have watched the erosion of Canadian institutions. Our military lacks transport capability, our environmental protection agencies are reduced, gagged and underfunded, and our national broadcasting corporation is limping along on repeated and recycled programs. This could be the year the NDP is voted into power, but how will they revitalize these and other areas of our culture? With desperate need for a workable sponsorship program to accommodate refugees, rigorous application of environmental standards and so many pieces of past bad legislation in successive omnibus bills to repudiate, it will be a major endeavour to restore some functionality let alone pride and virtue in Canadian institutions. I expect deficit budgets, and I expect to be taxed; I expect corporations to be fairly taxed as well. The NDP must now clearly speak their plans for managing the nation’s business. Group drums up support for voting reform Kendra Wong Victoria News

With the federal election roughly a month away, a local group is renewing the call to change the current voting system to more accurately represent voters. Fair Vote Victoria is part of a national multipartisan organization called Fair Vote Canada that is committed to changing the voting system to a proportional system. “Our current system allows a party with 40 per cent of the vote to get all the power and do whatever they want. It’s been going on for generations,” said Wendy Bergerud, president of Fair Vote Canada’s Victoria chapter. “It doesn’t seem to represent the people of this country very well. People aren’t heard and their issues aren’t heard.” Canada’s voting system is based on a first-past-the-post system, in which an election is won by the candidate who receives the most amount of votes. Fair Vote Victoria hopes to change that with proportional representation in which an electorate is reflected proportionately in the elected body. For example, if 30 per cent of the electorate support a particular party, then roughly 30 per cent of seats will be won by that party. While the organization hasn’t stood behind one specific proportional voting system, they have a set of criteria they want including proportional representative, positive voter choice, fair representation,

geographic representation and government accountability to voters. Bergerud said there has been support in Victoria for voting reform, with roughly 2,200 people on the mailing list. “Maybe if we can change this foundational aspect of our democracy, we can start to have a parliament and resulting government that pays more attention to its citizens of this country and provides us with better government,” she said Victoria Green Party candidate Jo-Ann Roberts said, if elected, the party hopes to establish a new proportional electoral system by the next federal election. “The conditions are right for that. We’ve seen the Harper government get 100 per cent of power with 39 per cent of the vote and I think for Canadians that doesn’t seem quite right,” she said, adding that the political landscape is changing from a mainly two-party system to a three-way race. “If we look at Australia and New Zealand, they have forms of proportional representation that adapts to their form of government and that’s what we need in Canada.” Fair Vote Victoria is hosting its annual meeting this Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Victoria West Community Centre. Esquimalt-SookeSaanich liberal candidate David Merner and NDP candidate Randall Garrison are also expected to attend.

Preparations are underway to restore a well-known mural in Fairfield and add one more to the community. The Fairfield Gonzales Community Association currently has two mural projects on large shipping containers on the go – one of them behind Sir James Douglas Elementary School at Thurlow and Moss Streets, and the other on the same grounds behind the community centre on Fairfield Road. Led by professional artist Carolyn Knight, members of the community were invited to contribute drawings, paintings, letters and prints for the new mural at the community centre. At least a few hundred people contributed art work to the project, and the artist is now working with a graphic designer to create the final piece referencing Gerry Oak Meadows

The mural at Sir James Douglas was originally painted by Caroline Stengl in 2007 and installed with the help of volunteers. The mural – painted with bold layers of colour depicting life along the ocean with views of the Olympic Mountains — has since cracked and fallen victim to graffiti. Nestled away in a quiet neighbourhood sits a garden on the corner of Chambers Street and Gladstone Avenue in Fernwood. It's lush with fruit trees and bushes, and herb and vegetable gardens. There are handcrafted wooden benches scattered around the garden and a carefully constructed leaf mulch and wood chip pathway winding through the greenery. This is Spring Ridge Commons where Linda Chan and Sean Newton spend much of their time volunteering. Spring Ridge is Canada's oldest public food forest and Victoria's largest public permaculture garden, tucked away on a halfacre lot surrounded by residential homes. Over the last 15 years, it has become a centre piece for the community, with more than 20,000 people visiting since it was created in 1999. But the project hasn't been without challenges. The commons is run solely on donations and volunteers, with many using money out of their

own pockets to help pay for supplies. On Chan's birthday, instead of receiving presents, she decided to set up an online fundraising campaign to encourage people to donate to the garden. “I think the space is of great value to people. If people are in nature, they appreciate nature and they will actually fight for nature,” said Chan, who has been volunteering for the last six years. “If children are aware of being in a public space, in community, nature provides stress releases. It brings community together, people talk to each other, and they're more willing to help each other. Something like a garden fosters that.” Local visitors come to the commons with a book, and students and teachers from elementary school up to postsecondary visit the garden as an educational tool. They also grow a variety of produce such as

mushrooms, figs, buckwheat, herbs and fruit that visitors can pick at their leisure. Chan said she's met people from as far away as Europe visiting the garden. “The interesting thing is it's a small space but as you put more energy into it, the space expands,” said Newton, who has been volunteering at the garden since 2012. “This is a way to get to know where you live, connect yourself to the soil, connect yourself with the hummingbirds, squirrels.” So far, the fundraising campaign has raised more than $500, which will go towards paying workers who helped in the garden in the fall, cleaning up the area by the cistern, cutting down and clearing the Oregon grape, and replanting the area with kale and other winter vegetables, among other things. Bladder cancer survivor spreads awareness in Greater Victoria News staff

It’s a subject not everyone is comfortable talking about, but Brian Williams of Sidney is willing to speak up to encourage people to live healthier and help others catch cancer early. Williams, 71, is a bladder cancer survivor and is now speaking on behalf of the Bladder Cancer Canada Awareness Walk, an event coming to Greater Victoria in September. He says the issue tends to be quite personal for some people, not unlike how it was with prostate cancer — until people found the courage to talk about it. “People generally don’t like to talk about this stuff,” Williams said, adding that can be disastrous if a problem is left too long. The first indication he had bladder cancer was he peed blood. After a series of tests and an ultrasound exam, a tumour was found. Williams admitted he was naive about the entire process and didn’t know where to turn or who talk to about the diagnosis. “What I liked was that my doctor didn’t trivialize it,” he said. “They took it seriously and they made me feel like I could do this.” He began treatment right away. As he learned from doctors the extent of his illness, Williams underwent surgeries to try to get rid of the cancer. The first operation ended up damaging his bladder, so he had to undergo a six hour surgery to remove his bladder and replace it with a portion of intestine. Williams said it’s a relatively common procedure for bladder cancer. The recovery, however, was long and tough. He said his body had to re-learn how to pee by recognizing different signals from his makeshift bladder. It was hard, he admitted, but he did it and now, about nine years later, Williams said he’s living his life to the fullest.

“We have some excellent medical services on the Island,” he said. “I want people who are going through what I did, to know that there are experts here they can talk to.” Williams counts himself among those experts, although from a very personal point of view. He has offered his experience and expertise to other bladder cancer patients on the Island, who might be facing the same uncertainty he did. “When I went through this, I found there was no support. There was nobody I could go to, like some of the other cancer groups out there.” After mulling over the idea of starting his own support group, Williams opted instead to go to his doctor and offer his time as a mentor to others. “I know what I went through and I didn’t know who to call. This is a bit of a payback thing for me.” Williams also hopes to spread the word about the Bladder Cancer Canada Awareness Walk. The first walk took place last year and saw a small group of people turn out. He’s hoping to see that grow this year. The walk takes place Saturday, Sept. 26 at Clover Point Park in Victoria. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. It’s about education and awareness, Williams said, noting it’s also a fundraiser with a goal of beating the $5,000 raised in 2014. Most people don’t associate a pie in the face with feeding the homeless, but the Mustard Seed is trying to change that as part of a new campaign to help feed Victoria’s homeless population. On Saturday, Sept. 19, the Mustard Seed is launching its second annual Pie-Off Challenge to encourage residents to raise awareness about hunger and help stock the food bank’s shelves. As part of the campaign, the Mustard Seed will challenge individuals and local organization leaders to a friendly pie fight. Challengers will be given 24 hours to accept and begin raising food and funds. Last year, they raised $43,000 and 44,000 pounds of nonperishable food. This year, their goal is to raise $100,000 in cash donations and 100,000 pounds of food. The donations will help keep Mustard Seed shelves stocked well into their next big fundraising push — Canstruction in the spring. “It’s the most impactful fundraising for us in the fall,” said

Allan Lingwood, director of development with the Mustard Seed. “It’s essential at this time of year that we stock our shelves for the winter and new year months. HarbourCats place bid for baseball championships Bid to be awarded in November The Victoria HarbourCats have bid on the Baseball Canada Senior Championships in 2017 and 2018. The official national tournament for the best men’s amateur (senior) teams in Canada has never been hosted in Victoria, and has only been held in B.C. three times in the past 25 years (Kamloops in 2005, and Prince George in 2002 and 2012).

The nationals bid chair is Shawn Petriw, a member of the HarbourCats marketing team with extensive experience in bidding on and executing the hosting of major sports and arts events. “Our local ownership group pledged to do all we can to bring the best baseball events possible to Victoria, as part of our mandate to build the game of baseball and support community growth,” said Jim Swanson, general manager of the HarbourCats. “This is a premium event, and

we are hopeful the bid process will smile on awarding this tournament to Victoria. It would complement our HarbourCats season nicely, and give our fans and the community something else to look forward to in those summers. More baseball is a good thing, and we know this great community will support it fully.” The tournaments would take place in the third week of August, following the completion of the WCL season/playoffs. B.C.-based teams have won gold

recently -— 2013 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, 2012 in Prince George, and 2008 in Brandon when the Victoria Mavericks claimed the national title. Ten teams from across Canada are expected to take part, adding to the sport tourism benefit for Victoria and the South Island. The tournament takes place Wednesday through Sunday with up to 25 games. It’s a concept that began in the United States in 2006 and continues to spread across North America, but now a group of Victoria realtors have made the concept their own. The 100+ Women Who Care movement started in Jackson, Michigan and the concept is simple. The groups meet for one hour, four times a year. Each member brings a cheque for $100 and nominates local charities, non profits or worthy causes, whose names are put into a hat. Three names are drawn at random at each meeting, and a member makes a five-minute presentation about each cause. The members then vote on which one to support. Local realtors Tara Hearn and Jane Johnston were both members of 100+ Women Who Care and decided it was time to start their own group with other realtors. Last January, Hearn and Johnson teamed up with Neil Bosdet and Joanne Broderson, and started working on 100+ Real Estate Agents Who Care Victoria. The group is focused on donating to charities in the Greater Victoria area that provide shelter and housing services to those in need. “Not everyone has the benefit of being able to own a home, but we are all about homes,” Hearn said. Their first meeting in May was attended by 60 realtors who raised $6,000 to give to the Laren Society, which manages a halfway house in Victoria. Hearn hopes to have 100 people at the next meeting on Sept. 23 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Max Furniture and Brown Window Fashions. The recipient charity will be
