Fighting Facebook Local man part of firm that is focussing on privacy AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
A former Parksville city councillor is taking on Facebook. Peter Morrison is working with brothers Michael and Ian Reid to build a better social network called Kube. Describing themselves as the “not evil Facebook,” they formed Red Scotch Software less than two years ago and are almost ready for their public unveiling. Based in Nanaimo, the brothers started the company to figure out what to do with webbased technology they’d been developing in their previous company. “We’d developed a piece of software that was able to build social networks really, really fast,” said software developer Ian. “We weren’t initially totally clear on what to do with that.” But privacy quickly became their main goal and before they knew it they were developing what they believe is a unique “private decentralized encrypted social network,” very different from existing networks. “Most Internet companies don’t treat users as customers, they treat them as the product,” said CEO Michael. He explained that while people can choose what to share with their friends on existing social networks, the companies themselves own the data. “The part we have a problem with is how the information’s being used on the back end by these companies,” Ian said. On Kube, people will still be able to share whatever information they want, but “the information contained should be that user’s information, the user owns the information, it’s their information, not our information,” he said of the fundamental difference. QUALICUM BEACH LABOUR DISPUTE
Lockout could be over this a.m. Union members accepted mediator’s plan; it’s now up to town council AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
The union has voted to accept a proposal and Qualicum Beach town council is voting behind closed doors this morning. “We have to make sure we have all the elements we’ve agreed to in the language,” said Mayor Teunis Westbroek, but “if it passes we want the
employees back to work Wednesday morning.” He said chief administrative officer Daniel Sailland is recommending council accept the proposal but council has to review the language details. “We laid out the conditions and elements that would help us, allow staff to be more efficient and deal with weekend and shift work and so on,” Westbroek told The NEWS Monday morning. Though he wouldn’t disclose the terms of the proposal he said, “We were asked under what conditions we
would accept to move to two per cent a year.” A union request for a two per cent annual increase was the main stumbling block over the month-long labour dispute which saw union members locked out by council. A news release from CUPE Local 401 confirmed members accepted the mediator’s recommendations in a vote Friday afternoon. Foreign currency among stolen items
CandaCe Wu news@pqbnews.com
Police are seeking the public’s help in locating stolen goods, including 800 British pounds and 400 Israeli shekels. Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said police received a report Wednesday from foreign tourists camping at Rathtrevor Beach whose vehicle was broken into the night before. Foreman said a foreign passport, two wallets, 800 British pounds, 400 Israeli Shekels, a Nikon camera with a large lens, a black Osprey day pack, a North Face purple and orange day pack and black Oakley bi-focal sunglasses were amoung the stolen items. “A significant amount of items were stolen,” he said, stressing the importance of the foreign passport to the tourists who are supposed to be in town for another six weeks. Foreman said he’s hoping if a business or bank notices some unusual currency come through they contact police immediately. He said the vehicle did not sustain damage from the break-in suggesting the doors may have been left unlocked. If you have any information about this crime please contact the Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Campfires allowed as rain falls in region As of last Friday campfires are permitted throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, including the Parksville Qualicum Beach area. The fire prohibition was rescinded due to the cooler and wetter conditions, resulting in a decreased wildfire risk. Campfires under 0.5 metres (1’7”) wide by 0.5 metres high are now allowed as well as open fires in outdoor stoves. Anyone who lights a campfire must have a hand tool such as a shovel or at least eight litres of water available nearby to fully extinguish it. — NEWS Staff

NEWS FROM SCHOOL DISTRICT 69 BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING
Seeking input on BSS track CaRLI BeRRY reporter@pqbnews.com
Discussions are still ongoing between the Regional District of Nanaimo and School District 69 on what to do with the track at Ballenas Secondary School. At last week’s School District 69 board meeting, trustee Julie Austin said the RDN was unsure of where the board stood regarding upgrades to the track or creating a multi sport complex. “I believe the RDN doesn’t really have a clear picture of where the school district is coming from when it comes to the Ballenas track,” she said. She said the board should consult the community to determine if a multi-sport complex would be used. “What does this community want to see? Do we want to see a full-blown, multi-sports complex and the money and time involved with that… (or) just a track used for local use but doesn’t have event potential?” Austin said that adding a turf field would be beneficial for soccer and football. Austin continued that this would be at no cost to the school district in building or main-

tenance costs. “It’s not committing our school district to anything,” she said. Barry Kurland, vice chair for the school district said that a multi purpose sports track might not be viable at the Ballenas location “There’s so many other things (to consider),” he said. Austin said the RDN is looking at the location of Ballenas, as well as other options for the use of a multi-purpose sports track. “I think the community needs to have that full range of options,” Austin said. Superintendent Rollie Koop said this discussion was nothing new, the discussion of expanding the track has been going on for years. He continued that an upgraded track may not be reasonable in the Parksville area. In previous discussions the “community was primarily represented by the Oceanside Track and Field who are the primary users of that track.” He said for training purposes, an upgraded track would be useful for the track and field association, but not for competitions. He also said parking, and access issues would have to be discussed for a multi-sports complex.

“They can be as public or as private as they want. The user has privacy, which really means the user has control over what they want to share,” Ian said, pointing out that while people think they are making those choices on Facebook, “you’re not private from the company.” “I haven’t had a Facebook account forever and I wanted to go and take a look at it,” said Michael of a recent experiment. “I used a fake user name and a fake birthdate and I put it into a mode where it couldn’t see anything about my computer, but Facebook was still able to accurately profile exactly who I was.” “It knew everything about me to a pretty frightening degree of accuracy. That is something a lot of people aren’t aware of, and it’s something we see as being a big problem.” “Who can see and use that data needs to be in the hands of the owner, not in the hands of the company.” And so they built Kube from the ground up to be all about user privacy, based more on peer to peer type networking, explaining they “authenticate the user, blindly, so we don’t know who they are and then they can connect directly to other users. We don’t have to actually see any of the things they share or their relationships, we just facilitate the capacity to connect directly with other users.” People can even sign up without the company knowing who they are, and beyond privacy it’s unusual decentralized model makes it very secure. “The majority of the Internet is based on centralized data,” Ian explained. All of the information entered into Facebook goes into giant central servers controlled by them, which they secure, but if anything goes wrong, the data is all accessible. He gave the example of the recent hack and exposure of users of the online dating site Ashley Madison. “We don’t want to say we’re 100 per cent secure, but if there ever is a breach within the Kube system it will only ever be contained to an individual user.” With such a focus on privacy,

From Left, Michael Reid, Peter Morrison, Ian Reid, Lee Babin and Dustin Dawes are aiming high with their locally developed social network Kube.
The NEWS asked if there was any fear of people exploiting the network for illegal purposes. “Privacy isn’t about having something to hide,” Ian said. “Obviously when you have less capacity for surveillance and that sort of thing people are going to be able to do what they want. We obviously want to do everything we can to stop illegal activity, but we believe in privacy very strongly and we’re supporting that as the main approach.” Michael said the site will feel familiar to social media users, with news feeds and groups, but they will have more options and give users more ability to customize their experience. Meanwhile former city councillor and sign shop owner Peter Morrison joined them about a year ago to work on the business development side, working on a crowd funding campaign and the PR and marketing aspects. “Our business model is a freemium model,” he explained. “To create a network of any size or potential, we need to be able to provide 100 per cent free access to it.” He admitted they will lose out on the ability to sell and leverage the data their users provide, a major source of income for most social networks, so
they will focus building a powerful user experience through which they can then sell other services. “In the long term we see a revolution in ad-tech that encourages individual relationships between consumers and the brands they love,” Morrison said. “It will never be a requirement (so it will always be optional), but we are confident we can build a powerful value proposition for both consumers and brands.” With just two other full-time employees, the company is still in a sort of incubation stage, but has big plans. They are in alpha mode — accessible only by invitation — and will launch their public beta mode in October, which people can sign up for now. While they do have big ambitions, they admit Facebook is a serious juggernaut with more than a billion users that they don’t expect to replace. “We can provide a really great user engagement experience and we’re going to focus on that, even if they’re still on Facebook,” said Michael. “Taking on something like Facebook is a pretty audacious task and it’s not going to happen overnight.” For more information visit https:// kube.is/ or their blog at www.thinkkube.com.

“I love it. I don’t have a sore back anymore as I did with my previous mattress. It doesn’t get hot, plus I get a sound sleep. I also like the fact that it supports and cradles the body, relieving pressure points. It’s the best mattress I have ever owned. I highly recommend it.” Darlene Lawson, Victoria “I am extremely happy with my IRONMAN 3.0 Queen Set! Even with all the positive information I received prior to purchase, I was still very surprised at what an incredible difference this mattress made to my overall comfort and sleep quality right from the very first night!” E. Hunter, Victoria
“We are senior citizens, each with an array of back issues. We purchased our IRONMAN MATTRESS over two years ago after watching an in store video. It continues to provide us with a high degree of comfort as we both sleep more soundly through the night with little or no tossing or turning. We love our IRONMAN MATTRESS!” P. Thompson, Parksville
“I do enjoy my IRONMAN ORIGINAL Twin Set and I have not had a sore back when I wake up in the morning.”
Anita Milburn, Nanaimo
“We have had our Ironman bed nearly year now and it is the most comfortable bed we have ever slept on. We miss it if we have to sleep away from home!” George & Diana Cameron, Qualicum Beach Since 2000

New residents open a hub for holistic health Former Vancouverites plant roots in town with Qualicum Beach Wellness CandaCe Wu
news@pqbnews.com
Meet the couple who is changing the face of holistic wellness in Qualicum Beach. Vancouver-born Sean Lymworth and Darcy Smith moved to the Island earlier this summer opening Qualicum Beach Wellness, nestled in the centre of town along West Second Avenue. The duo is hoping to create a hub for health in Parksville Qualicum Beach. “We want to be a centre for holistic health and wellness, where, for example, practitioners can have a place for their practice and also where people can come if they’re on a healing path and they aren’t quite sure who they need to see — we can find someone who has the skill set for them,” Lymworth, a registered massage therapist (RMT) and co-owner of the clinic told The NEWS from his new office space Friday afternoon. Lymworth explained Qualicum Beach Wellness is an “integrated clinic” with a range of practitioners offering therapeutic and relaxation massage therapy, nutrition consulting, Bowen therapy, acupuncture and even somatic counseling. The hope is that, whatever your ailment, Qualicum Beach Wellness will have somebody who can help. Lymworth studied massage therapy at the West Coast College of Massage Therapy and has been practising for three years in the Lower Mainland. But before his life as an RMT, Lymworth had a starkly different path ahead of him as a program advisor for the provincial nominee program with the Ministry of Economic Development. “I was applying a template over and over again,” he CandaCe Wu photo recalled. “I enjoyed helping people, but once I got pro- Darcy Smith and Sean Lymworth are Qualicum Beach’s newest entrepreneurs. Fall renewal
S
pring is often regarded as a time of renewal. In and around Parksville Qualicum Beach this year, fall might more aptly fit that description. We have had some rain the last few days, with more to come this week. Considering the fact one could probably count on a single hand how many days we’ve seen rain in the last four months, these showers are a welcome, renewing sight. No word yet on the easing of watering restrictions, but the campfire ban has been lifted, just in time for one of the busiest weekends of the year, the Labour Day weekend. A renewed season of camping has arrived. Ah yes, Labour Day, which brings us to the month-long dispute between union employees and their employers, the Town of Qualicum Beach. We are hearing a deal has been reached through a mediator and could be ratified by town council as early as this morning. There’s a need for some serious renewal in how these parties view each other and interact. There will be some lingering bitterness from a dispute that had its nasty moments, that’s an inevitability after any labour dispute. Here’s hoping both sides can consider operating from a clean slate — a big ask, we know. It is also the fall, not the spring, that ushers in the new school year. The 2014-15 school year was the first in this district after the painful closure of four schools and a prolonged, passionate labour dispute between the teachers and the government. Perhaps this school year will see a return to more normal, renewed sense of educational focus on the students and not the buildings, budgets or educators. There’s also the federal election next month, which will bring some form of renewal regardless of the outcome. While our neighbours south of the border herald the baseball season’s start as a sign of renewal in the spring, we have a different sports-renewal view in the Great White North. The fall brings us a new hockey season, an untarnished canvas akin to a freshly resurfaced rink. Whether it’s the millionaires’ club of the big leagues or the local Junior B circuit or minor hockey, every team is in first place right now in this time of renewal. The local junior team, the SaveOn-Foods Oceanside Generals, have faced too many startand-stop renewals over the past couple of years, but they seem to have righted the ship, bringing that fresh-faced sense of renewal to Parksville Qualicum Beach that only a new hockey season can bring. Here’s to fall as the new spring! — Editorial by John Harding

PV safety officer
Re: the City of Parksville hiring a health and safety officer. Sound the trumpets. Open the city coffers. The city council will be starting their worldwide search for a person to teach city employees, among other things how, not to fall out of their chairs during working hours, “much needed relief for senior staff” (whatever that means) and I’m betting he/she will be advocating the new United Nations mandate to have all senior employees nap for an hour or two during our dark winter afternoons. And of course, the old argument, we have to pay top dollar to compete with world class safety officers that other provinces and countries are trying to lure to their dreary cities. In 10 years we’ll have paid out $1 million in salary and benefits to this worker. Is this your so-called living wage? I had to work 35 years for that same amount. Are you city councillors crazy? You won’t hire a bylaw officer who will actually improve the city and help citizens, but insist on hiring someone who will do nothing to improve our surroundings? RichaRd Pacanowski Parksville
Parliament ethics Trevor Wicks’ recent letter points precisely to the current situation. The ‘me-first-ism’ leading to almost complete collapse of the Mulroney Conservatives; the Liberal shenanigans exposed by the Gomery Inquiry; and now the squirming refusal of the prime minister to answer questions about that $90,000 cheque; all point to a long-running deterioration of parliamentary ethics. However, while applauding Wicks’ desire to involve the best and most experienced individuals to cooperate and advise government, I fear his National Parliamentary Coalition would inevitably be infiltrated and overwhelmed by the same big financial and business lobbies that now dominate the party system. How could they be kept out? Their personal and corporate party donations already command government compliance, as the un-mandated free trade deals, the enormous tax-payer-funded bank bail-outs, and the “privatize everything” movements testi-

fy. Now, the prime minister’s stated intention is to totally eliminate all public funding of parties, enabling wealthy donours to simply buy the policies they want. It is very clear which way the wind is blowing. The real weakness of parliament and legislatures lies in the calibre of the elected MPs and MLAs. If status, pay and pensions are their chief motivation, the incipient fascism now visible will become locked-in. Caucus control is already at a dangerous level and the crying need is for a parliament which thinks, considers and expresses a great deal more bloody-minded outspoken independence than we see today. In the long run, it is the elected MPs who must do the job they are elected to do and not just be tame ‘yes’ men. Russ Vinden Errington
comPlaints re: union Stop complaining about the unionized municipal workers. Remember, they were locked out and were without a contract for several years. As far as I’m concerned, they deserve the same hourly rate of pay that any other town or city pays, including Vancouver or Victoria. After all, a 50-pound garbage can weighs the same, no matter where you live. As for the senior staff doing the municipal workers jobs, if you were to do some quick math you would see they are receiving far more pay per hour than the municipal workers are asking for. Perhaps the number of salary jobs within the city should be reduced, seeing that they can just leave their own full-time job they were hired for and do the hourly workers jobs, like maintaining flower beds and picking up garbage. So let’s stop complaining and urge both sides to come to a fair agreement! Len FinLey Qualicum Beach
Garden Party helP Bushels of gratitude go out to Daniella Novak and Jay Norton who for the past five years have collected food donations at their annual garden party. Over 1,000 pounds of food, along with monetary donations, were recently received by The Salvation Army Food Bank. How is
this possible from a simple garden party you ask? Well about six or seven years ago, Daniella and her husband Jay decided to have a garden party for their friends and family. Guests kept bringing wine or asking what they should bring. Daniella kept telling them that nothing was needed. Since they love to entertain, this garden party became an annual event and they decided to tell their guests to bring food for the food bank. She phones us to find out our needs and shares it with her guests. It has become a big event. This year more than 90 guests attended and some of them phoned the food bank to find out which of our needs weighed the most. I’m thinking they have some competitive guests. What a fabulous and enjoyable way to entertain and help those that are in need in our community. The food bank is always in need of protein items such as tuna, peanut butter and sardines, as well as pasta sauce, canned fruit and vegetables and fruit juice.

thanks for helP durinG fall
It is with gratitude and humility that I wish to thank everyone who stopped and helped me after falling in front of Dolly’s Home Hardware store in Qualicum Beach. On Monday, Aug. 3, I was exiting the store and as I stepped off the sidewalk/curb and into the angled parking space where my truck was parked, I fell and sustained major injuries to my right arm. Somehow I had wedged myself partially under my truck and was in a very unsafe place. I wish to say thank-you to the paramedics, to the young lady who called 911 and to the gentleman who took charge of the area until the ambulance arrived. Though I was in and out of consciousness, I knew you were standing behind me and keeping me safe. Angels are brought into our lives when we most need them and for that moment in time, you were my angel. I do hope you read this and know how very grateful I am for taking the time to care. shaRon LecLaiR Parksville See LETTERS, page A12

Stealing iS a crime
Vote for rep. you want
I just arrived home from holidays and was reading The NEWS to catch up on what is happening at home. A statement by Cpl. Jesse Foreman really cranked me up, and it follows: “I want to stress to people it’s almost perpetuating a crime (leaving vehicle doors unlocked)” he told The NEWS. “If everyone in Oceanside locked their vehicle doors this would be far less of a problem.” Now I have heard some really silly comments before, but this is probably one of the best. What happened to the idea that “stealing” is a crime? I should be able to leave anything out anywhere and it is safe, the vast majority of time. Maybe some cultures have the right idea — you steal something you get your right hand cut off. In this part of the world there is no just cause for theft — there simply is no punishment to curtail it. There is a level of punishment that curtails almost anything. Maybe we just think that thievery is just part of our societal makeup. Maybe the results of stealing do justify the theft in the eyes of the criminals. Like driving while texting or using a device, it might be simply raising the bar that gets results. You text/use a phone while driving and get a paltry $200 fine. What happens when you cannot get your license renewed? You break into a car or open the door without the consent of the owner and steal something from within — maybe 30 days of public servitude in a pink suit might get the point across that stealing is a violation of other’s personal rights.
This is in response to Bob Pellow’s recent letter to the editor urging people here to vote ‘strategically.’ I have discussed the political scene with people of all stripes and everyone has been most respectful. The majority of voters are happy to come out of the political closet and have shared their genuine and well-founded concerns about voting in this upcoming election. While there has been concern over splitting the left in days gone by, this is no longer the case. The great majority of Blues I have spoken with are as disappointed with Prime Minister Stephen Harper as all the other colours. Very few continue to stick their head in the sand and pretend all is well on the Blue front. Those that are disheartened with the Blues are looking to vote Green. This is what happened in Saanich Gulf Islands in the last election when Elizabeth May won with a 7,000 vote majority over a sitting Conservative cabinet minister. There really is no Red presence in this riding, so they are looking to vote Green. Those who in the past have supported the Orange are well aware of the missed opportunities which they let slip by as opposition. Above all else, it is time people make sure they vote. And when they vote, vote for who they want to represent them in Ottawa. When citizens vote based on a well-researched informed decision, isn’t that the basis of true democracy and the very best strategy, compared to pulling straws?

Rainbow Stew Cloggers celebrate 20 years The name comes from shoelaces and a song they danced to in their early days CARLI BERRY reporter@pqbnews.com
The Rainbow Stew Cloggers will be celebrating their 20th anniversary this September. Instructor Sharon Lafferty said the first class was Sept. 29, 1995 and she has been teaching the cloggers since then. The Rainbow Stew Cloggers got their start after Lafferty attended a clogging class in Nanaimo and it was there that she learned how to perform. She brought back her findings to her exercise group where they learned how to clog. Originally starting with only three people, the Rainbow Stew Cloggers got their name because of some rainbow shoe laces and a song they danced to in the beginning called Rainbow Stew, by Merle Haggard, Lafferty said. The class may have started with only three people but as the years went on the size increased. One year, Lafferty said they had 120 people sign up for the classes. However, there’s a reason why one doesn’t see 120 stew cloggers performing at events. “Only 20 to 25 people like to perform,” she said. Now, she said, the group ranges from approximately 50 to 70 members. Performing is a large part of the stew cloggers, Lafferty said. Not only does it provide people with entertainment, it also gives the cloggers recruitment opportunities. “You cannot keep a club alive unless you have new members,” Lafferty said. The cloggers put on a variety of performances throughout the year and especially during the summer months. They’ve performed at places like the St. Mark’s Fair, the Magnolia Court Mall, the Qualicum Beach Farmer’s Market and will be performing at the Lighthouse Fall Fair in September. Their performances are only in the Oceanside area, Lafferty said. They’re known to dress up for their performances too.

The Rainbow Stew Cloggers will be celebrating their 20th anniversary this September. The cloggers perform at many events in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area, including the Canada Day parade in Parksville (above).
Lafferty said the old uniform was a shirt and denim bottoms, but as time went on she decided to let the members choose their outfits due to the expenses. The outfits are based on a theme at each event. For their performance at the St. Mark’s Fair the cloggers dressed up like fairies and made-up creatures. In the past they’ve dressed as pirates for their Fire and Ice performance. Lafferty said the summer months are prime recruit-
ment opportunities and she sees approximately six new members each September. There’s no set age limit to join, she said, but she does recommend that children bring their parents. Classes are held at the Qualicum Beach Community Hall on Wednesdays and Nanoose Place on Thursday evenings. There is a $5 drop in fee. For more information one can visit the clogger’s website at cloggers.weebly.com.
Square dancing is ‘good exercise to reduce stress’ CARLI BERRY reporter@pqbnews.com
Lynette McLoud has been dancing with the Sand Dollars square dancing club since 2005 and has been square dancing since she was in Grade 3. “It’s good for your mind and your health,” she said. McLoud’s been dancing for 47 years. She started in Bella Coola in
1962 with her uncle. When she moved to Port Alberni in 1969 she picked it right back up again but took a few years off when the club closed. With the Sand Dollars, McLoud said she “queues the rounds” which she elaborated, is like ballroom dancing. “It’s good exercise to reduce stress.” McLoud choreographs the classes.
The Sand Dollars will be hosting an open house Sept. 14 at the Bradley Centre on Shearme Road in Coombs. Coffee and tea will be provided. “You don’t need to have a partner… you don’t need to dress up,” Debbie Schmidt, caller and cuer of the club, said. You don’t have to be a good dancer either — the class is set for beginners.
Square dancing is typically done in pairs, with eight people dancing in a square. It is believed to have originated in 17th century England, but was common throughout France and Europe. Classes start on Sunday evenings Sept. 20 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. with the first lesson free. For more info, contact Ray or Debbie Schmidt at 250-951-0135.

Homemade organ debuts Mo Alton says he made it himself with parts from Germany CARLI BERRY
reporter@pqbnews.com
Jazz band Sea Cruze will be unleashing a secret weapon at the Shady Rest on Sept. 5. They’ll be introducing a custom-made Hammond organ that player Mo Alton built himself. It’s made with parts from Germany, guitarist Fraser Kerley said. This specially made organ allows Alton to play with a fuller sound, he said. Alton’s style is like Jimmy Smith’s, a famous organ player who had albums ride the Billboard charts. Based out of Victoria, guitarist Fraser Kerley said they’re a “sophisticated” band. The band plans to start the evening with some light dinner music before progressing into a ballroom dancing style to step it up. “We have a vast repertoire,” he said. The band has Kerley on guitar, Raman McArthur on vocals, Dave Pretty on drums and Mo Alton on the custom organ. Sea Cruze isn’t what it used to be with it’s reformation in March. Dave Pretty is the youngest and newest member, Kerley said. McArthur and Kerley were both music

teachers until retirement. Afterwards they met up and reformed the band after it diminished for a number of years. The last reincarnation of the band had a female lead vocalist singing Madonna hits, Kerley said. They were more a pop band in the 90s. Nowadays, Kerley said he is happy that Sea Cruze is getting back to its jazz and blues basics. They’ll provide a “warm sound” he said, with a “guitar that is not gnawing your ear off.” He said the organ is commonly used in jazz and this time it will enrich the band and will create a warmer sound. Expect to hear some arrangements from Michael Buble, blues from the Downchild Blues Band, some 50s and 60s rock, Elvis, The Beatles and more. Their goal with Sea Cruze, Kerley said, is to tug at the heartstrings of different eras and the memory banks by covering eras of famous music. The band will be performing at the Shady Rest from 7-11 p.m. They’ll also be making another trip to the area on Nov. 7 for a performance at the Smoke ‘n Water in Nanoose Bay.

Knox Fall Fair back in action Includes big garage sale, food and entertainment CARLI BERRY
reporter@pqbnews.com
The leaves are changing colours and it’s that time of year again, the time of the fall fairs. The 11th annual Knox Fall Fair will be coming back to the Knox United Church in Parksville. On Sept. 19 at 345 Pym St., people can come experience a massive garage sale, food, entertainment, baking, local produce and a silent auction. This year’s garage sale will feature a variety of different items including: books, furniture, clothing, children’s toys, crafts, Christmas accessories and much more. Food will also be provided. From 7:30 to 10 a.m. one can get themselves a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausages and muffins, followed by a shortcake tea from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a barbecue lunch of hotdogs and hamburgers with a vegetarian option from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m, according to a Knox press release. More than 200 volunteers prepared for the special fair that will be both inside and outside of the church. The kid zone is back with face painting, arts and crafts.

Melania Cecilia HOFFMAN May 25, 1931 – August 25, 2015
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a beautiful sister, friend, and Aunt. Melania (Melanie) Cecilia was born on May 25, 1931 to John and Lousia Wegleitner in Fulda, Saskatchewan. She was peacefully called to the Lord’s home on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 for a blessed reunion with her husband, Tom. Melania grew up on the family farm in Fulda, Saskatchewan where she learned how to work hard but still have fun. She received her education in the Edson & Fulda schools and earned her CNA degree at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Melania married Thomas Hoffman on July 3, 1965. After their marriage, they moved to an acreage in Qualicum Beach. Although she never had any children of her own, she has many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her dearly. Melania was well known for her love of music, baking, and her zest for life. She had fun wherever she went. Melania loved to travel and go exploring with her husband Tom and, after his passing, with her many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was always ready for adventure. Melania was predeceased by her husband, Tom in 2004; parents, John and Louisa Wegleitner; brothers, John Jr. (Brigetta), Frank (Agnes), August, Lambert, Alois (Theresa), and Romald; sisters, Katie (George), Marie (Martin), Bertha (John), Johana (Math); Ida, Gertrude (Bill), Elizabeth (John); brother-in-law, Albert Weiland; great nephew, John Peter. She is survived by her brothers, Joseph (Dorothy) and Ludwig (Lida); sister, Christina; sisters-in-law, Lois and Jeanette. She will also be loving remembered by her many nieces, nephews, and friends. A Memorial Mass will be held in Melania’s honour at 11:00 am on Thursday, September the 3rd at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, 887 Wembley Road in Parksville. NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Notice of Special Resolution: Change in Constitution
December 19, 1927 – August 25, 2015
In the early hours of August 25, 2015, our dad lost his brief battle with cancer. It was not a fair fight. He held us all close and shared his love to the very end. Dad was born on December 19, 1927 in Victoria, BC. He spent his 16th and 17th year serving in Canada’s Merchant Navy, our country’s fleet of transport ships that carried desperately needed equipment, fuel, goods, and personnel around the world. He spent most of his working life at Jubilee hospital. He is predeceased by his first wife Donna, his sister Mary, his brother Dick, and his parents Fanny and John Flood who immigrated to Canada from the UK. He leaves behind many friends and family members who he loved so deeply and who will miss him and remember him always. His wife Jacquie, his children Robert, Kathy (Rick) and Sarah (Pat), his extended children Michael, Allen and Donna, and his grandchildren Nicole, Heidi, Leah, Trevor, Ian and Owen. He treasured many wonderful friendships, most notably the bond that he shared with his great buddies Ed, Alf and Fred. You all brought love and happiness to dad. He discovered his passion and his talent for gardening early in life and spent so much of his time growing and sharing these fruits, vegetables and flowers. He also spent many years keeping bees. Some people search their entire life to find a pastime that brings such immense joy. Dad was a depression era baby – he came through times more difficult than we will ever understand. He was forced to leave school at a young age and yet he was a most knowledgeable man who could discuss any topic with anyone. He was the kind of man that made a community a community. He epitomized hard work. He worked hard every day of his life – and he loved it. If there was work to be done for a group he belonged to, he was there. If there was work to be done for a community project or community fair, he was there. If there was a neighbour that needed help, no matter how big or how small, he was there. And regardless of how old he was, he was likely working harder than most others – that was simply his character. There are not enough words to convey our respect and appreciation to the staff and volunteers at NRGH Palliative Care. Thank you for taking such amazing care of our dad. The work that you do is so meaningful to both patients and family members. A family memorial will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please reach out and give back to your community in some way, because that’s what dad would have done.

Qualicum Beach golfer going pro Wrapping up his university career, Brayden Eriksen is taking his next big career step T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
After wrapping up a successful career at Utah Valley University, Qualicum Beach’s Brayden Eriksen is going all in, making the jump into the world of professional golf. Eriksen, who recently competed in both the B.C. amateur and Canadian amateur tournaments, posted respectable scores and finished in the top 15 in both tournaments. At the B.C. amateur, he finished tied for 14th and then went on to finish tied for 11th at the Canadian amateur tournament. “I thought those tournaments went well,” Eriksen said. “Being able to make the cut in both of those tournaments and then go on to finish where I did, that really sort of showed me that this is definitely something I want to be doing.” “I’ve been thinking about going pro for a few years now and having played the way I did in university the last two years sort of confirmed that, then these tournaments really made me realize it’s the right thing to do.” Spending four years at Utah Valley University and earning his bachelor’s degree in business, Eriksen’s last two seasons saw his score on the course drop drastically, cutting four strokes off his game. He finished his senior year with a 72.8 average score per round, including a season best 67. He had six top-10 finish-

es in his senior year, with four coming in the top five. “It was a lot of fun,” Eriksen said. “I never won a tournament but being right
there in all of those tournaments, being within one or two shots felt good. Hopefully at the next level I’ll be able to close it out and win some tourna-
ments. I played in a lot of great tournaments at Utah Valley and it really helped me get to where I am right now.” With plenty of professional tours out there, Eriksen and his management team will be looking into which route would be the best to take. While some tournaments have the big purses for top finishers, there are other tournaments out there that could lead to an opportunity to earn a tour card for other tournaments. “We’re looking at a lot of options,” Eriksen said. “There’s so many tournaments out there but we want to find one that’s not going to give you a huge purse if you win, because those ones usually just have the money for the top four or five guys.” “We’re looking at tournaments that are more spread out in terms of the earnings, as well as tournaments to give you a shot at earning a tour card or moving up to the next level to get on a tour.” Pheasant Glen Golf Club will be hosting a fundraiser/sponsorship tournament for Eriksen on Saturday, September 19. Entry fees are $150 per player or $500 for a team of four. Cost includes a cart, 18 holes of golf, dinner and prizes. Anyone looking for more information or to sign up for the tournament can contact Gord Melissa at Pheasant Glen at 250-752-8786, or to get in touch with Brayden about potential sponsorships, e-mail him at brayden_07@hotmail.com.

Generals lose two of three pre-season games T yson Taylor sports@pqbnews.com
It was a busy week for the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals, who played three games in four days. The Generals lost two of their three games, a 5-0 loss to the Westshore Wolves and an 11-3 loss to the Campbell River Storm. The team did pick up another win, their second in a row against the Nanaimo Buccaneers by a score of 6-4. Coming off their win over the Buccaneers, head coach Brad Knight was pleased with the first two periods but not too happy with the end result in the third period, as the Generals let the Bucs back into a game they had no business being in.
“I thought the first two pe- sage across. riods of that game were good,” “There’s lots of guys fightKnight said. “Our effort in the ing for spots,” Knight said. “We third period isn’t the way that can’t afford to be taking that this team is going to play hock- amount of time off.” ey.” “There’s always a punish“The fans that came out to ment for an outcome like this show their supand they’ll That was last season, lots port deserved learn with me of things went wrong and that’s somemuch better I feel we’ve got the right than that and thing I don’t group of players it was embarlike to see,” he rassing.” said. Generals players still enjoy the intensity that coach Knight brings to the table and know that they must learn quickly from their mistakes going forward. “We can’t afford to play like that,” forward Sebastian Powsey said. “We know what’s down that road and we don’t want to travel down that route again. That was last season, lots of things went wrong and I feel we’ve got the right group of players here that can turn that sort of thing around,” Powsey said. “Personally, I love what Coach Knight brings to our team, he’s a no nonsense kind of guy and I think that’s what we need as a team. It was a good learning curve for us, making
us work hard in practice for not working hard in the game and hopefully we’ll learn from this.” The Generals now have 10 days before their 2015-16 season officially kicks off, as they travel to Campbell River to take on the defending VIJHL and Cyclone Taylor Cup Champion Storm on Sept. 11. The following night the Generals are at home to host the Nanaimo Buccaneers at Oceanside Place, with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. This will kick off the opening weekend of the Oceanside Generals 25th anniversary, with some surprises in store through out the season to mark the celebration. See photo, page A30

locals earn hardware
55+ B.C. Games medals T yson Taylor
sports@pqbnews.com
The wild weather over the weekend caused a few cancellations at the 55+ B.C. Games, but that didn’t stop locals from bringing home some hardware. As part of the Vancouver Island North grouping, which brought home a total of 170 medals, plenty of Parksville Qualicum Beach area athletes earned medals of their own over the five day event. The Thrifty Foods Ocrcas 55+ Mixed Slo-Pitch team came away with a gold medal, their fourth in the last six years. Also earning a medal in the team events were the Balding Eagles 55+ and 60+ soccer teams, both featuring local members and both earning bronze. The Men’s 60-64 slo-pitch team, also featuring local athletes, won silver. In the individual categories, Emmy Matte
(Parksville), Heidi Bromley (Nanoose Bay) and Harry Keen (Nanoose Bay) all brought home six medals each in swimming. Matte earned six gold medals, Keen with two gold and four silver and Bromley with one gold, four silver and one bronze medal. Paul Connor (Qualicum Beach) captured two gold medals and a silver in cycling. Russell Sharock (Parksville) had two gold and three silver in swimming, while Joan Nielsen (Parksville) earned a silver and three bronze medals in swimming as well. Peter Kucey (Qualicum Beach) brought home a bronze in horseshoes. Joe Giegerich (Nanoose Bay) had two gold and and two bronze in track and field. Hans Tenor (Qualicum Beach) had three silver and two bronze in track and field and Jess Brewer (Nanoose Bay) also brought home a silver medal in track and field.
Bam Bam will fight for title Oct. 24 Qualicum Beach’s Aubrey “Bam Bam” Morrow will fight Oct. 24 in Quebec for the Canadian Middleweight Championship. Morrow, who last defeated Paul Bzdel for the Western Canadian Middleweight title, will face Canadian Middleweight champ Francis Lafreniere in his home province of Quebec. With a record of eight wins (seven by knock-
out), one loss and two draws, Morrow faces an opponent in Lafreniere who has a record of 9-5-2. In fact, it was Lafreniere beating Bzdel in a unanimous decision for the Canadian Middleweight title back in 2014. Morrow stopped Bzdel in the seventh round of their fight, who proved to be a very tough and worthy opponent for both Morrow and Lafrenier. — Tyson Taylor

www.fairwinds.ca On a day that looked more suited to joining the windsurfers at Columbia Beach than golfing anywhere around the island, Myra and I set off to check out how the good folks at Fairwinds were doing and also squeeze in nine holes between storm cells. Mid afternoon this past Saturday, we decided to give it a go anyways and after the usual sharing of pleasantries with the ‘A’ team of customer service in the pro shop, we headed out. Off with the rain jacket, down with the umbrella and pass me my sunglasses please, we teed off in the calmest and sunniest part of the whole weekend. Although it didn’t last as long as we hoped for, we managed to take some great photos and get in eight very enjoyable holes. Body surfing down the fairway was not an option on the ninth hole really so we headed in, dodging raindrops the size of, well . . . really big raindrops. Within those eight holes of play is one of the most picturesque Par 4s anywhere, the challenging and rewarding fourth hole. Demanding of a good long tee shot to set up your approach shot, this hole, with its three-tiered green guarded by two well placed bunkers had a slight modification this year that improved it dramatically. In days gone by, it also included having to deal with a small creek running in front of the green making anything

hit short a tasty appetizer for the babbling brook. The brain trust at Fairwinds, with its progressive thinking, filled in a section of about 25 yards of the creek allowing for a run up shot to be played through the gap now. A subtle, but very impressive improvement to say the least. It had no bearing on how Myra opted to play the hole. She simply hit her pitching wedge over the creek and bunker from 50 yards out and then proceeded to drain a 30 foot sidewinder with a five foot break for an amazing bogey five. Her short game lessons this spring with Fairwinds

Upcoming Events September includes two more Monday Ladies nights and three more Thursday Men’s nights that you should check out to wrap up your golf season. It also includes a very popular and well supported event on September 11th: The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation 22nd Annual Golf For Life. Not only has it run for 22 years, it has always been held at Fairwinds every year and Brenda Rositano, Events Coordinator for the foundation stated that, “We wouldn’t have it anywhere else”. She went on to sing the praises
much like I do about the entire Fairwinds experience. You can reserve your spot today by calling Brenda or Shannon in Nanaimo at 250-755-7690 or by calling Fairwinds directly at 1 888 781-2777. So whether your heading out for a game of golf, enjoying a great dining experience, buying a golf gift or learning how to play the game look no further than Fairwinds Golf Club for the remainder of this golf season and many more to come, it’s worth it every time.
