Centennial celebrations From left, Save-On-Foods’ Meredith Matheson and Fort & Foul Bay store manager Roger Junker look on as Oak Bay’s Thelma Grant and Margaret McDougall cut the cake at Save-On-Foods’ 100th anniversary celebration held outside the store Friday. The two women, who live at Shannon Oaks, turn 100 this fall. See more photos from the event on page 10.

First the good news. The Victoria Transition House celebrates a remarkable milestone this year, marking 40 years of helping women in Greater Victoria escape from abusive situations. The bad news, as the transition house’s development director Susan K.E. Howard notes, is that those services are still needed. Last Friday (Aug. 28), the transition house kicked off one of its most important events of the year, hosting 50 people at Victoria Golf Club’s Links to Change Art Auction opening and reception. “We really are grateful to the Victoria Golf Club,” Howard said, noting it’s vital for Transition House to reach out to the community. “Without events like these we would not be able to continue operating.” This year, the Viva Italia! Art Auction features 13 works of art created by local and international artists, on display at the golf club until the final bidding at the Gala Italia! Gala Party and Dance on Sept. 11. “The work is incredibly diverse,” Howard said, noting styles of work range from collage to oil painting. Each piece is valued at between $500 and $3,000 and many were created by notable artists such as Canadian E. Joseph Dreany, best known for his work in the 1950s as a commercial illustrator in New York. His piece, Untitled Winter Landscapes, is in the style of the Group of Seven. Last year, the auction, golf tourneys and gala party raised more then $108,000 to help the transition house provide its desperately needed shelter. “This is one of the two most important events (held each year) to raise money from the community,” Howard said. This year, the women’s golf tournament is planned for Sept. 10, while the men’s tournament is on Sept. 12. June’s Goddess Run is another significant fundraiser. The non-profit charity operates an 18-bed emergency shelter for women and their children as well as a 24-hour crisis and information line among its services. The agency provides all services free to women leaving abusive situations and children who sometimes witness abuse. To learn more about Victoria Transition House, visit transitionhouse.net. A very hard find. One level, no step home custom built in the late 80's. Located just steps from Willows Beach offering some water views. Large master suite and second bedroom on the entry level, plus a fully finished walk-out basement. Bonus for the area is a large double garage. Call me for details and/or to be put on the list for advanced showings.
