Oak Bay Rotarians celebrate youth with cash award Oak Bay High’s humanitarian of the year earns local scholarship Christine van Reeuwyk Oak Bay News

Recent Oak Bay High graduate Alexandra Ages finds election time troubling. “It’s kind of difficult times,” she told Rotarians gathered for the weekly lunch meet-

ing. With an election looming, campaigns seem to be all about spending money to talk about the problems we face in this country and beyond. “It’s really saddening,” Ages said. “It’s really nice to see organizations like this one, and the ones I’m a member of, outwardly trying to make a difference.” The teen was there to receive the Oak Bay Rotary Foundation’s first $1,000 scholarship. Each year, the foundation awards a scholarship to an outstanding graduate of Oak

Bay High School who intends to pursue post-secondary study immediately following graduation. This year the organization upped the value. The winner is selected based on the candidate’s record of academic excellence and demonstration of leadership qualities and the motto ‘Service Above Self.’ “She really did embody the entire spirit of of service above self,” said David Maxwell, foundation president. Ages served as a peer counsellor at Oak Bay High; a member of the Island Sexual

Health Youth Committee; a member and led a Mental Health Forum of the Greater Victoria Youth Council; a youth facilitator for the Red Cross anti-bullying program; a volunteer for the Greater Victoria Green Team; a participant with Amnesty International; and a member of the Syrian Refugee Aid Club. She also co-chaired the Climate-Action Summit for YesBC Youth and earned Oak Bay High School’s 2015 Humanitarian Award. PLEASE SEE: Rotarians present scholarship, Page A2

“I think you want to support the youths from a few different perspectives,” Maxwell said, noting the rising cost of education means they need a hand with the financial aspect. “It also sends a message to students that giving back is valued and recognized. It also helps publicly recognize and promote that there are incredible things being done by youth out there.”

Ages is registered to study Political Science and Humanities at the University of Victoria this fall and plans to join the Rotary-affiliated UVic Rotaract Club of Victoria. “The more youth leaders we support today, you hope they get inspired to become Rotarians or part of other volunteer organizations,” he said. “You hope it inspires them to be part of Lions or Kiwanis or Rotary when they get older.” cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com

Finish summer with a full moon community walk Aug. 29. "For this last full moon walk of summer, we continue to venture north, circling our fabulous Uplands Park and dipping into the historic and prestigious Uplands neighbourhood," says organizer Ron Carter. Hosted by the Oak Bay Community Association, the walk starts at 7:30 p.m. in the main parking lot at Cattle Point then follows the the southern edge of the park in a circuit toward Beach Drive in time to catch the moonrise simultaneous to the sunset. All ages are welcome and families encouraged. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is suggested and walkers should hope for the best but prepare for worst weather-wise as the event goes on rain or shine. How does your garden grow? For Oak Bay’s Ruth and Brian Holl, it teems with apples and tomatoes, colourful Swiss chard, potatoes, peas and pears. And blueberries...oh, so many delicious blueberries. “This has been the most fantastic year because of the heat,” Brian says. The Holls moved into their south Oak Bay property in 2006, when it was largely an ornamental garden, with some food areas. “We sat on it for about a year, and then slowly we started rearranging things the way we wanted,” Ruth recalls. Today, a quiet stone patio in the sunny front yard is surrounded by a variety of apples, tomatoes and lavender, while in the back, mature ornamentals and numerous spring-flowering bulbs are mixed with assorted beds, pots and garden boxes filled with tasty edibles, not to mention about 20 blueberry bushes. There’s an espaliered pear tree heavy with fruit and raspberry canes brought from the Holls’ former garden in Vancouver. “The more space you have covered with vegetables, the fewer weeds you have,” Ruth notes. They’ve also added more annuals, like the cheerful marigolds and sweet peas, and selfseeding floral edibles like calendula and borage that bring bees and butterflies. “We like pretty things, too,” Ruth says with a smile. The two come by their garden growing honestly. “We love fruit and we like vegetables. We both graduated in agriculture long ago and my father had a market garden,” Ruth says, noting both enjoy working in the garden, but also the pleasure of harvesting their own food. “It’s therapeutic,” Brian adds. Because they can’t eat everything they produce while it’s fresh, the couple also freezes and dehydrates much of their produce for use later in the year. The richly producing space will be one of 14 stops on the inaugural Urban Food-Garden Tour, Sept. 12. The city lot shows just how much food can be produced in a relatively compact space. Thanks to this year’s extra-sunny skies, the garden is about a month ahead, but will still provide plenty of food for thought for the tour. The tour aims to give home gardeners and people thinking about growing food the chance to access 14 home food gardens on Oak Bay, Saanich, Victoria and Esquimalt, mostly at people’s homes – backyards, front yards, allotments and boule-

Vibert, a professor in the University of Victoria history department, is researching a women’s farm in South “The more space Africa that’s motivated in you have covered similar ways with vegetables, the – rooted in community, fewer weeds you feeding peohave.” ple locally – Ruth Holl and sustainably. Some of the funds raised from the tour will go toward a growerto-grower exchange planned between Haliburton and Hleketani farmers. In addition, funds raised from the inaugural Urban Food-Garden Tour will also support Haliburton farmers to expand their weekly food-box program. To emphasize the importance of accessibility of local food, Hali food boxes will go (by draw) to lower-income fam-

ilies through 1UP, the Single Parent Resource Centre. “We’re expecting some great conversations [from the tour], from how to grow food yearround, to how to keep soils healthy, to how to use water sensibly in our increasingly dry region. Bees, chickens, mushrooms, all manner of veggies and fruits – they’re all on the tour,” Vibert says. For the Holls, they wanted to encourage people to try food gardening, in whatever space works for them. “Even if people can grow whatever the simplest thing is for them to grow, it’s helpful,” Ruth says. “You can, with a very modest amount of property, or in boxes or containers, grow your own food.” Adds Brian, “we take great pride in the fact that we don’t need to go to the market for produce.” Tickets for the Urban Food-Garden Tour are $15 (under 15 free) and are available from GardenWorks, brownpapertickets.com, Haliburton Farm stands at Moss Street Market, the Victoria Public Market at the Hudson and Oaklands Market, or by email at vicurbanfoodgardens@gmail.com For more information, visit vicurbanfoodgarden.wix.com/tour editor@oakbaynews.com

Excessive speeders need tougher penalties Several local police reports in recent weeks have highlighted drivers caught travelling at extremely high speeds along local roads. This wasn’t an extra few kilometres over the speed limit we’re talking about. On Aug. 6, a motorist was stopped for excessive speeding on Foul Bay Road, clocked at 125 km/h in the 50 km/h zone. On July 30, also on Foul Bay, another motorist was caught driving at 97 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Both drivers received violation tickets for excessive speed and their vehicles were impounded for seven days. The fact that these were residential roads underlines the tragedy that could have quite easily occurred. While details as to the time of day weren’t available, we’ll assume it was late at night, based on traffic patterns, but that doesn’t mitigate the potential for a tragic result to this idiocy. Not to mention the flagrant disregard of traffic laws and common sense. Regardless of the time of day, a crossing car, cyclist or pedestrian could easily have been caught heading home from the late shift, or starting on their day’s work. None would stand a chance bring struck at that speed. Or what about one of the municipality’s ubiquitous deer? With road-crossing behaviour that is unpredictable at best, the sudden appearance of one of the creatures would surely send the driver crashing into a telephone pole, parked vehicle or oncoming driver. Currently, excessive speed fines range from $368 to $483, and add three points to the driver’s license, which can cost additional money depending on the number of accumulated points. On top of that, the driver faces towing and impound charges for the seven-day vehicle impoundment. So, the costs of driving with excessive speed do add up, but they’re still nowhere near the potential cost to victims. As the B.C. government plans next month to address the ongoing risks of distracted driving, it seems that widening the scope of their discussion to include this extremely dangerous behaviour might also be in order. St. Mary’s hosted magnificent Baroque concert We heard a very powerful and magnificent concert on Saturday, Aug. 15, by the group Raven Baroque. Eleven professional and professional-quality musicians wowed the small audience at St. Mary’s Church in Oak Bay, in their final concert of the season. With the marvellous acoustics of St. Mary’s sanctuary, we heard the beautiful resonance of each instrument. I especially enjoyed the two joyful concertos by J.S. Bach, my personal favourite of all classical composers. But all the pieces were a breathtaking delight to the senses. We are blessed to have such riches of Baroque music to enjoy in Victoria! Where is the thrill for game hunters? I have followed with great interest reports in the media concerning the wanton slaying of Cecil the lion and the many letters to the editor regarding that most unfortunate occurrence. I have been greatly surprised by the fact that not one letter supporting trophy hunting has been submitted to your publication or to any other that I have searched. I, and I’m sure many of your readers, would be greatly interested to hear their views. In this connection, I would appreciate your allowing me to address the following questions to trophy hunters through the medium of this letter. Just what do you get out of slaughtering magnificent beasts like lions,

tigers, leopards, elephants and water buffalos? Just what do you feel you have accomplished? As far as I, and the overwhelming majority of civilized people can see, you have travelled to a distant land on a ‘plane which you would have no idea how to manufacture yourself even if you had the components. Once in the country of destination, you spend large sums of money to rent an all-terrain vehicle which you could never have built yourself, and to hire a retinue of guides to lead you to an area where the target of the day might be found. Most hunters then dispatch a team of “beaters” to flush the targeted animal toward their point of observation, whence they, in compete comfort and safety, assassinate an unsuspecting creature with

a sophisticated weapon, which, again, you could never have manufactured yourself. You, and all your fellow trophy hunters, aren’t content to simply murder any member of a given species; you must execute the most robust, thereby diluting that species’ gene pool and diminishing its likelihood of avoiding extinction. Why do you need to do it? Please, let us hear your side of the argument – or are you too ashamed? John C. Simpson Oak Bay

Careless driving, smoking penalties on way Tom Fletcher Black Press

The B.C. legislature is being recalled Sept. 28 for a fall session that will likely deal with increasing penalties for distracted driving and careless smoking. The B.C. government has signalled its intention to increase penalties in both areas. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton announced preliminary results of public consultation on distracted driving penalties at the end of June, with 90 per cent of respondents calling for stiffer penalties for using smartphones while driving. Anton said the current $167 ticket for distracted drivers is not sufficient for repeat offenders, who could have their vehicles impounded. Saskatchewan has introduced a one-week seizure of the vehicle for drivers who get two distracted driving tickets less than a year apart. After dry conditions sparked an early start to the B.C. forest fire season, Forests Minister Steve Thomson announced a review of penalties for vio-

lating campfire bans and tossing lit cigarettes. Thomson appointed Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Mike Morris, a former RCMP superintendent, to lead a similar review of those penalties. Morris said he was considering the vehicle impoundment option for careless tossing of cigarette butts, and prohibiting people from camping in provincial parks if they violate campfire restrictions. Fire bans allow use of camp stoves or barbecues with briquets for cooking, but conservation officers continue to find people lighting wood fires that give off sparks and can spread in dry conditions. The fall session will complete an unusually busy year for the B.C. legislature, which was recalled in July to authorize a project development agreement for the Pacific Northwest LNG gas export project proposed for Prince Rupert.

Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival will showcase some of Oak Bay’s biggest fish this season. Among the festival’s more than 300 performances of 50 shows at 11 venues over 11 days is the Oak Bay-born Dancing with Fish. “We are thrilled to be in the Victoria Fringe Festival with a spiffed up version of this wonderful story about two men who meet and develop a life-long friendship built around games,” said Jim Ricks, one of the leads and creators. Dancing with Fish was developed last year and performed

at fringe festivals in Port Alberni and Nanaimo, as well as the In Jest Festival of Clown and Play in Vancouver. It was also onstage at Berwick Theatre in Royal Oak, Oak Bay United Church and James Bay New Horizons. “Audiences really enjoyed the show and many people are coming to Fringe to see it again,” said Ricks, noting the project was created and rehearsed last year at Oak Bay United Church. “We have played it in the sanctuary and have had a lot of church support. It has been great.” Dancing with Fish stars Ricks and Scott Smith as Holliday and Moore, two guys who meet by chance. One is fairly introverted, the other outgoing and boisterous. The friendship builds and develops but Moore is competitive, and he does something to Holliday that breaks their relationship. Moore’s ensuing epiphany inspires the origin of the Dancing with Fish title. He makes

restitution, they become friends again and grow old together. Ricks and Smith, who portray the pair, are also active clowns with the non-profit organization Sunshine Clown Society that presents the show. But while they use clown-like elements, it’s not a clown show. “The show is family-friendly, kids get it and laugh,” Ricks said. “This was a surprise to us when we performed in several venues where kids were present. Few shows in Fringe are familyfriendly so we encourage people to bring school-aged kids.” Oak Bay United Church,1355 Mitchell Rd., plans to host a party to see the show on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m. The festival opened Aug. 27 and runs to Sept. 6. Fringe shows are moderately priced at $11 for adults and $9 for seniors and kids. Tickets, show times and venue details are available online at victoriafringe.com. cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com

hile location may be a prime factor in choosing a home, when it comes to choosing a realtor, there’s a lot to be said for local knowledge. Born and raised in Victoria, Julie Rust has that knowledge, and more. “Growing up in my family’s property development business, I always had a keen interest in construction and real estate, she says. After graduating from St. Michaels University School, Julie received BA with honours in Urban Development from the University of Western Ontario, knowledge she puts to good used as a licensed realtor with Newport Realty & Christie’s International Real Estate, a local, community-based company with strong international connections. A multiple MLS Gold recipient, representing the top 10 per cent in sales of Victoria Real Estate Board members, Julie is dedicated to marketing and selling real estate in Greater Victoria, particularly Oak Bay, Saanich and Fairfield. “As a life-long Oak Bay resident, I can provide valuable information on the particular neighbourhoods, up-andcoming areas and locations that would best suit your needs, explains Julie, who outside work enjoys skiing, playing tennis, spending time with my family and exploring the world of feng shui. Working mostly with families, people downsizing and

out-of-town relocations, Julie’s brings an extensive network of connections in the community and among her fellow realtors. “I work hard as a buyer’s agent for my clients to find the best home in the best location and help them to navigate the myriad factors involved in a home purchase, with all the necessary due diligence required, she says. “I believe that when you buy, you also need to look forward and think about when you’ll sell. It’s about keeping your exit strategy in mind and seeing a property not only as your potential home, but also as a financial and personal investment. When it comes time to sell your home, “I have a successful marketing plan and sales strategy to get my clients’ homes show-ready and exposed to as many qualified buyers as possible to make the sale, Julie says. Building her business on referrals, Julie brings a plan and a philosophy that works. As one client reflects, “we were very fortunate to have Julie Rust help us sell our home. She succeeded where other realtors did not. Her professionalism, hard work and enthusiasm were wonderful. She also assisted us in finding us a new home that had everything we were looking for and more.

We just made our move. The opportunity to bring world-class marketing to my clients meant making a change. We are pleased to announce my move to Engel & VĂślkers, one of the world’s leading international real estate ďŹ rms. ÂŽ

Jim McAvoy jokes that he’s lost more bridge games than most people have played. It’s likely true, as he now has nearly 8,000 points as a competitive bridge player. When he hit Life Master at 300 points, McAvoy felt on top of the world. Decades later he’s learned there’s always more to learn. “To get better, your a function of who you play. Improvement wasn’t an option, but a must, and he found the only way to do that was to explore beyond local club competition. “Then I started to play really competitively,â€? he said. Following a successful series of summer technology sessions for seniors at the University of Victoria, plans are underway for a fall series. Today’s technology means it’s now possible to read books, watch movies, listen to music, and stay in touch with others, all in the virtual world, however not everyone knows how to navigate this new digital terrain. So while the proliferation of smartphones, tablets, and computers has changed the ways individuals interact, more services are out of reach to people who are unfamiliar with these devices. Powerfully posh wheels for cruising Keith Morgan ondon, England – Rollers, Bentleys and ambos are as plentiful as shopping carts t the local Morrisons supermarket in this xclusive residential area of the old country’s apital city. he posh wheels in which I tooled around rimrose Hill for a week was not to be found nywhere but the drive of my temporary city ome. he 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe (base price ere in Canada is $129,000), distracted wellressed locals from their window-shopping. ome shed the coolness and stroked the bonnet’ of the machine, which conceals he massive 4.4-litre M turbocharged, 560 orsepower, V8 engine. It’s sporty looks, racy arbon fibre roof and large air intakes had

signalled to them its power. A few guys, one of whom looked like one of those famous Brit actors whose name you can never remember, broke silence and asked me what it was. Well, they knew it was a Bimmer but wondered at its length. “It’s like one of those darn Yankee cars…too damned long for my coach house,” he chuckled and strode off into the book store before I could comment. Yes, at almost five metres in length it was one heck of a challenge to park at the aforementioned food emporium, protruding considerably into the space behind. But it was worth the effort because that cavernous trunk, I mean ‘boot,’ was ideal for stashing the huge quantity of sweet confectionary my kids insist I purchase every time I visit the land of my birth.

Pleased as punch with my purchase of malt loaf, Chorley cakes, Curly Wurlys and Jelly Babies, I headed over to the less-than-elite area of Camden Town, where hippies still roam. Traffic wasn’t stopped but all four lanes were chock-a-block and merely moving one block took seemed to take an eternity. Thank goodness for the ‘creep on demand’ feature, which kicks in with a light touch of the accelerator and takes the car smoothly up to 14 km/h. I should have been so lucky to reach such a top speed. I was concerned that one of those everweaving London taxis would remove a coat of paint from the Gran Coupe. Needn’t have worried. Well, at least, not about the cabs. A glance in my rear view mirror alerted me to a cyclist speedily approaching. The two-

wheeler decided we motorists were all going too slowly for him. Just as the motorized battalion picked up a bit of speed he whipped by me on the right. To avoid a collision with a fast ‘approaching’ central pedestrian island he cut in front of me. I veered to the left and curbed the car. He took off, oblivious to the costly damage he had caused to the low-profile wheels on the passenger side. Time to get out of town and put those 560 horses to better use on the motorway. Where would the local gentry spend the weekend? The British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a drive of around 90 minute, a chance to renew my acquaintance with F1 driver Sebastian Vettel, as a guest of Ferrari team sponsor Shell. Driveway Continued from Page A11

Having him at the wheel might have been more thrilling but while I didn’t push the pedal to the metal, I did cause the horses to break into more than a gallop – zero to 100 km/h in just over 4.2 seconds. The Gran Coupe purrs along and effortlessly breezes by anything you choose it to pass. The seven-speed Steptronic tranny offers seamless movement between the gears. Approaching the track, traffic slowed and for the first time I had time to admire the beautifully stitched leather interior and controls layout, all of which are definitely all ergonomically correct. The cockpit display takes its cues from the driving mode selected using the Driving Dynamics Control switch, the graphics and colors of the displays indicating clearly which of the COMFORT, ECO PRO and SPORT settings has been engaged. Very cool.

Realtors undertake cycle tour of homes Jennifer Blyth Oak Bay News

A group of Oak Bay realtors celebrated the cycle-friendly nature of the community with a recent tour of homes by bike. Traditionally, realtors will regularly visit new listings by others in the area to provide feedback and learn about the properties. While that’s typically done by car, the realtors at Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty in Athlone Court recently took to their bikes for their tour. “It was a lot of fun,” says Bill Ethier, president/managing broker. Not only was the tour more environmentally friendly, but “it’s way easier.” While biking can take a little longer to reach the different parts of

Oak Bay, it’s much easier to find a small area to rest bikes than to find parking for six or seven vehicles, he says, encouraging others to give it a try. About eight realtors joined the two-wheel tour of properties and many more indicated they would like to join future rides. The tour finished at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel café. “The feedback from the realtors was, ‘Let’s do this again,” Ethier says, noting planning is in the works for a second bike tour in early September. The realtors are also hopeful the tours will start up again in the spring, once the winter weather passes, he says. editor@oakbaynews.com

Artful home tour inspires renovation dreams Looking for ideas about finding the potential in your new home? Or how to turn a fixer-upper into the home of your dreams? The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s annual House Tour will yield more than a few ideas. Celebrating 62 years of introducing residents to some of the finest designs and renovations in Greater Victoria, the fundraiser takes place Sunday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Under the theme “The Art of Dramatic Living,” this year’s tour features unique homes owned by local art and theatre buffs, honouring homeowners’ connections to the arts. “This is one of our largest fundraisers benefiting the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria,” says event co-chair Pieta VanDyke of the Gallery Associates. “The funds raised support the mandate of the gallery, which includes the development of education as well as exhibition programming.”

Several Oak Bay homes will be among those welcoming guests for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria House Tour Sept. 13. Presented by the Gallery Associates, the selfdirected tour will lead visitors to several headturning homes in Oak Bay, along with those in James Bay and Saanich, ranging from a contemporary residence with a bonsai garden to an 1889 cottage with an expansive flower garden. Unique to the House Tour is its Art in the Garden component, where some of Victoria’s most accomplished artists work at their art at each location. This year’s artists include Robert Amos, Catherine Moffat, Christine Reimer, Claire Chris-

tinel, Nicole Sleeth and Victor Lotto. Each home will also feature a stunning floral creation courtesy of the Victoria Floral Artists Guild. Tickets are $35 and are available at the art gallery, all GardenWorks locations, all Brown’s the Florist locations and online at aggv.ca/events/ house-tour-2015-tickets. Various options for online ticket pick-up will be provided when tickets are purchased. For more information, visit aggv. ca or call 250-384-4171. editor@oakbaynews.com

Mariners launch bantam teams Thirteen and 14-yearold baseball players looking to test their skills at a higher level are invited to try out for a new team aiming to continue the tradition built by the Victoria Mariners Premier Baseball League program. The Henderson Parkbased Mariners are introducing a bantamage squad that will compete in an elite provincial league. The idea is to provide the same level of coaching, development and competition as those found at the senior and junior Premier levels, as a way to prepare players. The program began summer assessments and an introduction to fall ball last weekend. Workouts continue this Saturday (Aug. 29) and Sept. 5 from 9:45 a.m. to noon at Layritz Field. For information or to register for fall baseball, visit victoriamariners.com.
