It was the annual one-day all-volunteer clean-up of the waterway that runs through Aldergrove, organized by the Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society and Langley Environmental Partners Society.
A ceremony to celebrate the beginning of site work for the new Aldergrove Recreation Centre will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Members of the public are invited to join Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese and members of Township Council for the event. The ceremony will take place at the former Aldergrove Elementary School site, 27032 Fraser Highway, on the gravel playing field on the south side. The 100 year old two-story school, gymnasium and other additions built there will be torn down in coming weeks, although portions of the original school will be salvaged and used in the new structure. In related news, the Alder Grove Heritage Society is seeking information on any time capsules which may have been buried at the school. AGHS spokesman Erik Simonsen told The Star that one such time capsule buried there in 1985 has been located and will be recovered before demolition commences on the site. He said that if any other similar items are known to exist details should be called to the society at 604-857-0555. The Aldergrove Recreation Centre is a Township of Langley recreation complex and outdoor aquatic facility that will feature a two-level, 550-seat arena and events space, a fitness centre, walking surface, and multi-purpose rooms. It will also have a six-lane 25 metre pool, waterslides, a tidal pool, current channel, childrens’ aqua structure, picnic areas, and large playground. The centre is scheduled to open in May of 2018. Rare Red Panda dies in quarantine at zoo here Aldergrove Star
The Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove announced on Aug. 22 that Rakesh, a recently arrived male red panda, has died. It happened on Aug. 17, the zoo statement said. A necropsy found the cause was pulmonary Blastomycosis, a lung infection caused by a fungus found
in decaying organic matter like wood and leaves. Most cases are caused by inhalation of spores from a soil source. Rakesh and his sibling Arun arrived from the Assiniboine Zoo in Winnipeg two months ago as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival program (SSP).
“The care of Arun is our top priority right now and as a precaution, he is treated by our veterinarian with medication while further tests are conducted,” the zoo statement said. Rakesh and Arun were immediately quarantined upon their arrival as required under AZA and CAZA protocols, the zoo said, adding neither panda was exposed to soil at the
zoo quarantine facility, which indicates the infection likely occurred before they left Manitoba. The Greater Vancouver Zoo has alerted the Assiniboine Zoo, the SSP veterinary advisor, and all other zoos in Canada and U.S. that currently have red pandas. Red Pandas are listed as endangered. Pot 101: KPU offers course in cultivation By MIRANDA GATHERCOLE Aldergrove Star
They knew a course in legal marijuana growing would spark interest from the public, but staff at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) never thought it would go viral. Since announcing the new program on Monday (Aug. 17), the internet has blown up with articles. TIME Magazine, BBC, CNBC, Fox News, USA Today, and VICE are just some of the outlets eager to report the story, according to Hayley Woodin, media specialist at KPU. “It’s been a stressful week,” Jim Pelton, executive director of continuing and professional studies at KPU, said with a laugh. He had just returned to work Monday morning from a relaxing vacation on Hornby Island, when he was immediately greet-
ed by Woodin who said, “you’re going to be on TV at 1 o’clock.” “I’ve never experienced anything going viral on the internet before and so that has been surprising — and a very pleasant surprise I must say,” Pelton said. Starting this September, students at KPU can be the first ever to take two courses in ‘Plant Production and Facility Management’ and ‘Marketing, Sales and Drug Development.’ The seven-week courses were developed with the assistance of the KPU School of Horticulture at the Langley campus and the Canadian National Medical Marijuana Association (CNMMA). Offered only online, they are open to anyone anywhere in the world at a cost of around $1,250. It’s taken a year to develop the courses, after the university recognized a need to have trained
individuals in this brand new industry, Pelton said. “For people in the industry who have been registering for the course, I think they’re interested in it because there’s never been a place where they can go to fill in the knowledge gaps in order to enhance their careers in the industry,” he said. “And I think for people interested in getting into the industry, this is a good way to put something on their resume that says, ‘hey, I’ve got a skill set here to sell. I’ve got a skill set to provide this industry above and beyond my interest in this historically interesting plant.’” Taught by instructors Tegan Adams, business development manager at the Health Canada licensed Experchem Laboratories, and Deepak Anand, executive director of CNMMA, the courses will cover
many aspects related to the professional management of marijuana for medical purposes. These include plant production, facility management theory, becoming a licensed producer, marketing, sales, patient acquisition strategies, medical conditions and drug development processes. The first class has already been filled, but a second one has been opened. Plans for a January session are already in the works as well. Registration is open at www.kpu.ca/cps. KPU has four campuses in Langley, Surrey, Cloverdale and Richmond, offering courses in business, liberal arts, science, design, health, trades and technology, horticulture, and academic and career advancement. About 100 people carrying signs that read “Protect our children” and “Protect our neighbourhood” walked along a rural Abbotsford street on Sunday morning in protest of a convicted sex offender living in their neighbourhood. They stopped in front of the home on Juanita Place – in the community of Bradner – that is occupied by James Conway, and chanted “Conway, go away!” over and over. “This is your welcome committee!” yelled one man. About half a dozen Abbotsford Police officers were gathered at the end of the street, in case the situation got out of hand, but the protest remained peaceful. Twenty minutes into the rally, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun stood before the crowd to answer questions from residents concerned about having a sex offender in their midst. “I’m not happy about this. Army Cadet Reudi Uebelhardt of Aldergrove was recognized as the top cadet in 21 Platoon of the Army Cadet Expedition Instructor Course at Vernon Cadet Training Centre during the final parade for all six-week Instructor courses. Cadet Uebelhardt is a member of 1922 Royal Westminster Regiment, Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, Aldergrove. The cadets parade at 3900-block 272 Street in Aldergrove on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Cadet Uebelhardt and 65 other army cadets participated in the six-week Army Cadet Expedition Instructor Course, which sees the cadets learning first aid, mountain bike skills, canoeing, abseiling, and navigation. A major part of their summer’s training were three five-day expeditions which took them hiking in Cathedral Park, mountain biking the Kettle Valley trail and paddling the Shuswap River. The cadets combined their skills to hike, bike and canoe hundreds of kilometres. During the summer, more than 1,500 Army, Sea, and Air Cadets from western Canada spent up to six weeks in the Okanagan Valley training centre, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friendships. A new Langley City crime watch page has been started on Facebook to help “take a bite of crime.” The Facebook page, which can be searched by “City of Langley BC Crime Watch 24/7”, is open to anyone who wants to view and post to it. If a crime has been committed, if someone seems to be acting in a suspicious manner, or there are any safety concerns that need to be posted, people are encouraged to do so on the site. Brookswood has its own crime-related Facebook page, but it is closed which means a person has to be invited into the group. Aldergrove also has a group but it encompasses all things about living in Aldergrove and isn’t crime-focused.

Crime watch page started for Langley City
Dana Chandler is a unique volunteer at Matthew’s House. She volunteers for all the usual, good reasons: she knows she’s helping a good cause, she loves interacting with people and it gives her a good feeling. But for Chandler, those are simply side benefits. Her real reason for volunteering goes much deeper than this. “I love volunteering at Matthew’s House. I know it sounds cliché, but volunteering here really has filled a hole in my heart,” she says. Laura Ullock is the resource development assistant for Matthew’s House and responsible for event planning and organizing volunteers. “Dana is so reliable and always willing to help us out at any of our Matthew’s House events,” said Ullock. “A volunteer like Dana really makes a difference to me because she does such a beautiful job in all of the activities she participates in whether it’s serving hotdogs, starring in our promotional video or standing out in the rain talking to people about Matthew’s House.” What makes Chandler unique is that she knows exactly what parents of children with complex health care needs are experiencing. Chandler had German Measles when she was 6 weeks pregnant with her son, Evan. Because of this, Evan was born with congenital rubella syndrome, which left him completely dependent on others for his care. His needs were so great that Chandler, a single mom, couldn’t care for him and her younger daughter, Angela, by herself. She relied heavily on outside help. By the time Evan was 16, Chandler’s options were dwindling so rapidly that she chose to leave Abbotsford and move her family to Edmonton where she received daily in-home care. It began with six hours a day but his health deteriorated and his needs increased so dramatically that by the
time her son passed away at the age of 23, Chandler was getting help in her home 12-hours a day. She also had a very good friend who provided her with a place to share frustrations, fears and joys. “If Matthew’s House had been available when Evan was a child, I would have been able to stay in Abbotsford, close to my extended family and get the break I needed,” she said. “There simply wasn’t anything like that back then.” Evan passed away in 2009 and the first few years after his death were difficult. While Chandler was relieved that Evan was no longer in pain, she missed him. She felt as though she’d lost a bit of herself. Moving back to Abbotsford was a good decision, bringing her back to the extended family that she needed. And one of the first things she heard about upon her return was that Matthew’s House was going to be built. Located in Abbotsford, Matthew’s House is a ‘home away from home’ that provides respite care for children from across B.C. who live with complex health care issues. Respite care gives parents a much needed break to rest and rejuvenate, strengthening the whole family. Matthew’s House has been open for just over a year but Chandler first heard about it when it was being built. “I read about it in the paper,” she says. “I just knew that I wanted to be a part of it.” And she has. It took a commitment from the community to build the home and fundraising continues to be important to keep Matthew’s House up and running. Dana has volunteered from the very beginning. She has been the smiling face at dozens of events, interacting with people, sharing information, telling them how vital Matthew’s House is for families. Chandler has particularly enjoyed meeting parents and letting them know about this great resource. “I know how exhausting it can be
Dayna Chandler with son Evan. to raise a child with high needs, when you feel like your only existence is your child’s survival,” she said. She can also tell them about the quality of care that she has seen children receive when they stay at Matthew’s House. “Every child at Matthew’s House feels like a star,” she said. “They love being there and the staff are amazing. I think that gives parents real peace of mind.” One of the most poignant volunteer
experiences that Dana participated in was the Grand Opening on Nov. 23, 2013, Evan’s birthday. “It just felt like confirmation that this was where I should be involved,” she said. “I know that Matthew’s House gives families and children a better quality of life. Aldergrove’s Dan Harder receives 20 year award By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
Dan Harder joined the Lower Mainland Baseball Association in 1995 as a member of the Aldergrove Giants in the league’s 30-plus Division and his many contributions during the past two decades were recognized when he received the LMBA’s 20 Year Award prior to Sunday night’s game at South Aldergrove Park. Dan Harder has participated as a player and manager in all three of the LMBA’s age divisions. His play on the field and his leadership as manager enabled the Aldergrove Giants to win four league titles and two playoff championships in the 30-plus division. In 2004 Dan became a member
of the Delta Stars in the LMBA’s 45-plus division and he has contributed to five divisional titles. As he was playing in the LMBA, Dan was heavily involved with his son Jacob and his friends as they progressed through Aldergrove Minor Baseball. The Aldergrove Giants transitioned into the LMBA’s 18-plus division and under his management the team won three divisional titles and one league championship. Dan suited up occasionally with the youngsters and this enabled him to catch Jacob, one of the league’s premier pitchers. Two long-time members of the Giants, Tyler Jones and Jordan Fatkin received their 10 Year Awards at the same time and joined a long list of Giants players who have made
many significant contributions to the LMBA. “The LMBA provides an opportunity for any player to continue their career at any age level,” said Dan Harder. “It has also provided an opportunity to play on the same team as my son and we have celebrated several playing highlights as starting pitcher/catcher and hitting back to back doubles on Father’s Day. You will not have the same opportunities in any other league in Canada.” “Dan has been a valued member of the LMBA for 20 seasons as a player, coach, manager, and team representative. He has a tremendous understanding and respect for the game – his contributions have been greatly appreciated,” said LMBA Commissioner, Dan Taylor.
