QUALICUM BEACH LABOUR DISPUTE

Lockout video proof Town contradicts events during picketer interactions AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

Dash cam video of interactions between union members and a Qualicum Beach garbage truck contradict an Aug. 20 story in The NEWS. Last Wednesday CUPE Local 401 Vice President Laurence Amy told The NEWS that, contrary to a report from town management, union members had not impeded a garbage truck. “Nope, we’re not blocking traffic,” he told The NEWS Wednesday. “We were following the garbage truck to the transfer station.” “We’re making a concerted effort to not have emotionally charged things,” Qualicum Beach Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Sailland said as he showed the video to The NEWS on Thursday. “Ultimately what we’re trying to do is peel the emotion out and say look, these are the facts, lets negotiate around the facts.” The video, shot by a GoPro camera installed in the truck by the town early in the four-week-old lockout, shows the garbage truck trying to turn into the transfer station in Errington on the morning of Aug. 18 and being blocked by five men — four have picket signs and the fifth appears to be Amy. Don’t play with fire. Despite widespread fire bans during one of the most arid summers Vancouver Island has experienced in years, firefighters are seeing evidence of illegal campfire use within Little Qualicum River Regional Park and the adjacent private lands in

the Meadowood area. “It’s not just one event, we’ve seen three obvious recent fire pits,” Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department (DVFD) deputy fire chief Greg Howard told The NEWS Friday. “It looks like it’s happening on a regular basis.” On Thursday, Aug. 20, DVFD posted on

loss in both timber and the houses on Corcan, Galvin and Koskimo.” Campfires and smoking are currently banned in all Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) parks according to a news release. Continued see: $10,000 FIRE, page A8 and related story: STILL HOT, page A3

STARTING POINT SPCA says Bowser home ‘satisfactory’ CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

There are “no overt health concerns” regarding animals in a Bowser residence that came under fire earlier this month after The NEWS received phone calls alleging animal abuse sparking an investigation by the SPCA. “Our constables connected with the owner of the animals and confirmed conditions were satisfactory,” SPCA senior animal protection officer Tina Heary told The NEWS Thursday. “The animals were recently examined and treated by a vet. There are no overt health concerns.” Heary said no animals were seized nor voluntarily surrendered during the investigation. Two weeks ago the B.C. SPCA launched an investigation in Bowser after neighbours reported alleged animal abuse in a residence apparently housing various distressed animals including a pig and a parrot.

Ravensong pool shut down until Sept. The Regional District of Nanaimo posted a notice to their website last week that “Ravensong Pool will be completely shut down until September 14 due to annual pool maintenance.” The shut down took effect the morning of Saturday, Aug. 22. AUREN RUVINSKY

writer@pqbnews.com

This July was the Earth’s hottest month ever officially recorded by humans, and it was felt in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area. The Qualicum Beach Airport weather station recorded an average temperature of 19.4 C, said Environment Canada Meteorologist Matt MacDonald, compared to the 17.1 C norm. “Two point three degrees higher, that’s quite exceptional for an entire month,” he said, with neighbouring stations in areas like Nanaimo showing a similar trend. The U.S.’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Aug. 20 that at a global average of 16.5 C, this July was the hottest month in their records, going back to 1880, and it may have been the hottest month in 4,000 years. That beat a record set in 2010 and they said the first seven months of 2015 are also the hottest January-to-July span on record. Nine of the 10 hottest months on record have happened since 2005, said NOAA climate scientist Jake Crouch in a news release, adding that “it is quite likely that 2015 will end up the hottest year on record, beating last year.” Crouch said this reaffirms that the Earth is warming, with a boost this year from an El Nino warming of the Pacific Ocean.

“The climate changes constantly, it’s just changing more because of what humans are doing to it,” MacDonald echoed. “This will be the new standard weather in 100 years,” he said. MacDonald said a low pressure trough off the coast over the next two weeks will moderate temperatures a little, but that we will have to wait well into the fall to get significant enough cooling and rain to impact things like the wildfire situation and watering restrictions. The Coastal Fire Centre reports there are currently 85 fires burning across B.C., including 8 in the Coastal Fire Centre but none in the Parksville Qualicum Beach Area. There are watering restrictions in place with Qualicum Beach residents allowed to water between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and watering almost completely banned in Parksville and the Regional District of Nanaimo where residents are only allowed to hand water vegetable gardens between the hours of 6-10 a.m. and 6-10 p.m. For more info contact your municipality: Parksville (250-248-6144), RDN (250-390-6560) or Qualicum Beach (250-752-6921) or visit their websites. ANIMAL CARE

Rabbits left Coombs EARS rabbits from UVic have been relocated to Alberta CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

The remainder of the UVic feral rabbits from a Coombs sanctuary have retired to Alberta. The founder of the Earthanimal Humane Education and Rescue Society (EARS) has confirmed the rabbits are no longer on Vancouver Island. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) confirmed 147 rabbits were relocated to a sanctuary in Alberta earlier this summer. “EARS had a permit to operate, but that permit expired on July 31, 2015,” FLNRO communications manager Sharon Dean told The NEWS by e-mail Friday. “EARS has not renewed the permit and has instead relocated to Alberta.” In June 2010, EARS assisted the University of Victoria in removing and rehoming about 600 feral rabbits from the University of Victoria campus to Coombs. According to the ministry, “European rabbits are a ‘schedule C’ invasive species, so there is no permit needed to trap and kill them, however a permit is needed to possess them live in cases where they are being moved to another location, as with the UVic project.” FLNRO provided EARS a one-time five year permit allowing them to take possession of the rabbits captured at UVic. As a condition of the permit, they were required to report annually on the rabbits received from that project. Sanctuaries are permitted on a caseby-case basis only, and must each be approved on their own merit for specific reasons. Susan Vickery, founder of EARS, described by its website as “a volunteer-operated, registered animal welfare charity,” said the last of the rabbits were transported to Alberta by vehicle in July. “I got permission from the Ministry to relocate the former UVic rabbits… I had the option of renewing a five-year permit and I said I’d rather move them to a more appropriate place,” Vickery told The NEWS last week. “It’s a great climate, nicer environment and more secure.” Moreover, Vickery said because EARS, which is a private rabbit sanctuary, is located close to public access points it’s often the target of trespassing, break-ins and vandalism. She claims just last week a person was distributing posters directing tourists to her private property to see the sanctuary. “The relocation is in the rabbits’ best

interest,” she said. A concerned resident called The NEWS last week worried about deceased rabbits she saw on the EARS property. Asked about the deceased animals, Vickery explained: “(The rabbits) have free range in large pens… once they die they’re sometimes dug back out by other rabbits, it sounds disgusting… The first few times I thought it was gruesome … but once these animals are gone, they think nothing of digging them back out… That’s their life cycle and there’s nothing inhumane about it.” Vickery said she works hard to give the rabbits the most natural life and death possible. “I’ve been at this for 15 years and it’s something we take very seriously and it’s not about abusing animals, the alternative is you keep them in confines where they don’t have that kind of freedom and that’s not a sanctuary, it’s a prison or a hospital,” she said. “Do these animals suffer? I hope not. We do the best we can and believe me after five years you know them all. I haven’t figured out how to make them live forever and that’s the truth.” According to Vickery’s annual report submitted to the ministry and obtained by The NEWS, 167 rabbits died last year from natural causes. Vickery said most of the rabbits were mature when she took them in five years ago, so it’s not surprising that their numbers have declined. Despite questions Vickery confirmed the remaining 147 rabbits were relocated last month. “There’s nothing here to complain about,” she said. “Any animals here are my personal animals.” EARS had been criticized in the past by people in the community concerned about the wellbeing of the rabbits in the sanctuary, as well as by neighbours who were frustrated by rabbits escaping. Vickery said she’s had people threaten her, break into her home, steal from and vandalize her property over the years and as recently as this week. “There is an open and active investigation into EARS,” said Tina Heary, B.C. SPCA senior animal protection officer, adding she could talk about the details. She was also careful to clarify that she believed “the ministry was advised by EARS that the rabbits had been relocated. Vickery is hoping now that the rabbits have been relocated the dust will settle and she’ll be left alone.

BATS CARRY RABIES

Rabies is a fact of life to be aware of in this region AUREN RUVINSKY

writer@pqbnews.com

A case of a bat with rabies in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area is a reminder for people, especially pet owners, to be cautious. “If you have any contact with a bat at all, even just handling it, you should wash thoroughly right away and contact

a health care professional about following up,” said Parksville veterinarian Dr. Alicia Ashley. “This is not something to panic about,” she said stressing that transmission to humans is “very uncommon in the area.” That said, there is rabies in the area, so people should be aware and take the appropriate steps, like vaccinating

their pets. “Bats are the only known mammal reservoir for rabies,” she said, pointing out it is transmitted through bites or scratches to humans or to pets first which then bring it into closer contact with humans. Dog bites are the most common way it is transmitted to humans. According to the B.C. Centre for Dis-

ease Control there were 102 cases of human exposure to rabies in B.C. in 2013, the latest year figures are available. Of those, 12 were in the mid-Vancouver Island area. Ashley said a rabies shot is included in the usual shots given to puppies and kittens, which she always discusses with the owners.

“You’re blocked, gotta go to Cedar,” one of the men can be heard saying to the driver, talking about the closest alternate dumping location, south of Nanaimo. On Friday, asked again about the incident, Amy would only say that “the vehicle did enter and exit the property,” and stressed that no vehicles blocked the garbage truck. Asked if people or anything other than vehicles blocked or impeded the truck he repeated: “the vehicle did enter and exit the property.” He suggested the incident could become a legal matter. “This is not a good situation, we don’t like it and it shouldn’t happen,” said Mayor Teunis Westbroek. “The fact that it did happen and (union representatives) lied about it, that’s not a good thing, that’s not going to help anybody. If I was a union employee I would have serious doubts…” In the video, the garbage truck driver — town financial officer John Marsh — can be heard describing the situation to Sailland by radio. Sailland told The NEWS he was simultaneously on the phone with representatives of the Regional District of Nanaimo, which runs the transfer station. The picketers can be seen waving vehicles around both sides of the garbage truck, including through the exit lane, to get into the transfer station. Sailland said this quickly became a safety issue and he contacted police. At the end of the video, after about 15 minutes, the picketers disappear from in front of the truck, Sailland said as the police arrive, and the truck continues into the transfer station. RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Hunter confirmed that police did attend the scene and spoke to the “involved parties.” He said everything appeared to be peaceful so no further steps were taken at that time, but upon reviewing the video two traffic violation tickets were later issued to people involved, though Hunter said they don’t identify people they ticket. Hunter reiterated that the dispute is not a police matter, the RCMP’s role is to remain impartial and keep the peace.

The mid and south-Island regions are also under a provincial fire ban including campfires and non CSA-approved portable stoves. “We have an unprecedented fire risk this year,” said Howard. “We need to be very vigilant in stopping human caused fires. Human caused fires are almost the exclusive reason for starting fires, we have very few that are lightening-caused.” Howard stressed “it only takes one person to start a fire” from an illegal campfire or cigarette butt. He said a wildfire in the Meadowood/Little Qualicum area is a serious risk during this dry summer, and could quickly spread into the community. “We live in a beautiful spot and

Are you in Diabetes? Arthritis? Insomnia? Fibromyalgia?

people are out in the backwoods and people need to be conscious of how high the hazard rating is right now,” he said. In an effort to enhance safety, the DVFD is asking anyone who witnesses a person starting a fire contrary to fire bans to immediately report it with as much information as possible. Fines for fire violations are payable under provincial law and RDN bylaws. Provincial law also allows for the recovery of firefighting costs and damages. People found to be intentionally starting fires during times of fire bans can face fines in excess of $10,000. To report a wildfire call 1-800663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks, or 911.

“Having the IRONMAN beds has improved my wife’s and my sleeping tremendously. We look forward to going to bed after a day’s work in the garden when our bodies are aching as we know our bodies will be refreshed after sleeping in the IRONMAN beds.” Steve & Ruth Thistle, Parksville “After a month of sleeping on a new mattress, I developed a burning, aching, sensation around my hips. In desperation I decided to try an Ironman mattress. To my complete amazement, one night on that mattress cleared up my discomfort. I feel so relieved. I can’t thank the makers of this incredible mattress enough.” Josanne E. “Best bed we have ever had, no waking up in the morning with joint pain, and no waking up during the night, because of pain. The mattress is so supportive and very comfortable.” Peter & Jill Conford

“We have only had our mattress for a short period of time and we are sleeping better, less discomfort at night, and more energy during the day.” Garry & Jewel F.

“Me and my wife have some long time ailments in shoulder and neck. Due to the new mattress and pillow we both experience the disappearance of pain. Not just by laying down ,but also during the daytime.” Daniel & Verena Krebs Since 2000

Truth in QB?

T

he first casualty of war is the truth. A California senator named Hiram Warren Johnson is credited with saying this first, back in 1917 or 1918. Union-management disagreements are not war. To say that would be to dishonour anyone who has been involved in an armed conflict as a soldier or civilian. As the Town of Qualicum Beach’s four-week-old lockout has heated up over the last seven days, it seems the truth has become a casualty. Our reporter Auren Ruvinsky viewed video that clearly shows locked-out union employees blocking access to the transfer station for a Town of Qualicum Beach garbage truck being operated by John Marsh, the chief financial officer who now has sanitation engineer on his resume. When we asked union leader Laurence Amy about the incident: “Nope, we’re not blocking traffic,” he said. Video doesn’t lie. Now, it’s probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things that Amy is no longer a credible source for us. Despite the fact both sides have been using The NEWS to make poignant points, this dispute will not be settled on our news pages, editorial pages or letters to the editor pages. Does it matter that we will no longer take Amy at his word? No. But, it matters what his union members believe and it matters how much those across the table trust his word if real negotiations ever resume. Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek grabbed hold of this when asked about the video and Amy’s apparent untruthful comments about the incident at the transfer station. Mostly silent during this dispute, Westbroek jumped in to employ the old divide and conquer strategy. “The fact that it did happen and (union representatives) lied about it, that’s not a good thing, that’s not going to help anybody. If I was a union employee I would have serious doubts…,” said Westbroek. Amy might have to get this deal done quickly. He has lost face, publicly at least. While no formal negotiations are planned, there was word the two sides might meet informally on Monday. We have witnessed much nastier labour disputes than this one. But it does seem out of place in sleepy, respectful Qualicum Beach. It’s time for a resolution, and perhaps that can’t happen now with Amy at the table. — Editorial by John Harding

Environmental bylaws are necessary to protect the lovely parklike quality of Qualicum Beach from the careless, thoughtless and unconsidered clear cutting of developers. I have lived on Crescent Road for two years and up to now the view from my kitchen window has been a magnificent green panorama of enormous pines and Douglas firs until about a month ago when developers clear-cut in preparation for building a house. So far, the clear cutting appears to have been completely unnecessary. All trees were stripped right down to the back lane where there has been no building. Was It necessary to strip down to the back lane? As I write, the lot at the corner of Berwick and Crescent looks as if it is also being clear-cut. Many citizens have moved to Qualicum Beach for the green which is now being cut down. Developers don’t seem to have an eye for compromise and preserving the site they are working on. Cut down what you need to and leave the beautiful foliage decades old. We have a bylaw to stop work when there is high risk of serious injury, illness or death or where tearing down a house has been stopped to protect the environment from various pollutions. Why don’t we do the same for tree cutting? Why can’t a fringe of trees be allowed for the privacy of the new house and the privacy of the long standing property owners so that they can have the environment they bought their houses for?

and half are around three miles. Trails for bikes, walking and scooters that are off of roadways makes much more sense. A simple half-hour Internet search on the economic benefits of rails to trails would change most people’s view of what should be done with the E&N railway. First, trail development and design create more jobs per dollar than any other transportation infrastructure construction. Second, the economic impact of trails has a very fast return. The Northern Outer Bank trail in North Carolina for example reportedly has an annual impact on local economies of $60 million, nine times the one time expenditure of developing the trail. Third, trails increase the value of nearby properties. In fact, a study in the U.S. found that nearby trails was one of the prevailing deciders on new house location choice. That makes sense as it one of the lowest cost recreation opportunities for families. In fact Americans spend more on cycling than airline tickets. Eco-tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments in the market. Could you imagine the economic benefit to the Nanoose reserve if bike excursions could leave Nanaimo’s cruise ship terminal to visit shops built up on the waterfront of the reserve. I challenge people to do their own research. Going to trails saves money now when light rail transit seems not at all economically feasible. Not only that but it promotes migration and has a large economic effect that may one day make elevated rail transit feasible on the very same corridor.

BENEFITS OF TRAILS I do not normally write to newspapers to promote an idea. But to be honest, I am tired of repeatedly reading things that promote rail as the smart economic choice on Vancouver Island. I do not know how many times someone has said they are getting older and need the train for transportation. Sorry, a train twice a day has really very little effect on your transportation. That money would be much better spent on enhancing our bus systems. Besides, about a quarter of our daily trips, statistically, are under one mile in duration

STILWELL COULD BE DOING MORE

As a former competitive athlete and sportsman I can relate to Michelle Stilwell’s drive and ambition to achieve the pinnacle of her sport in front of her fellow countrymen. I wish her well and also acknowledge her amazing accomplishments in that field to date. That said, I/we are still waiting for her to redirect her energies into being a full-time MLA. In my view, Stilwell is following the politician’s credo of showing up for photo ops

for every program and event and (passively) take credit for them even if they would have happened without you. Former MLA Ron Cantelon and MP James Lunney have been prime examples of that approach. When Stilwell declared herself as a candidate, her personal platform was straight out of the NDP handbook, and yet she took the “gold medal” route, opting for star candidate status with the party that mostly just pays lip service to her declared goals. Having taken on so many roles and responsibilities, Stilwell continues to be the “track star,” but without the hard work and training that we know is required to build a solid base for future achievements. Festooned with unearned political medals and plaudits, I fail to see how Stilwell can have any personal satisfaction in her performance to date. Hopefully this foray back into glory on the athletic track is her last hurrah in that field of endeavour and then she can throw her energies into making a real difference for her constituents and her community as, regardless of political affiliation, most of us (I believe) think she is capable of doing.

QB DESERVES AN END TO THE LOCKOUT

I’m not a great union supporter but I’m even less supportive of heavy-handed lockout tactics. It smacks of bully-like behaviour and has left our townspeople with a very bad taste in their mouths. I don’t think this is the outcome council wanted. In fact, I believe this lockout decision was made based on bad advise from someone looking to be a big shot in this labour dispute. Time to admit this was a misstep. Get back to the bargaining table with a real offer and salvage what is left of the tourist season, a time to showcase our town at its best. Our town, our valued workers and our taxpaying citizens deserve nothing less. ARLENE KING Qualicum Beach

The Rotary Noon Club of Parksville proved recently that it’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas. The group donated $3,000 to the SOS Christmas Program. The Rotary Noon Club of Parksville focuses on assisting local youth, and the SOS Christmas program aims to provide all local children with a gift to unwrap at Christmas, including youth. Additionally, the SOS Christmas Program is often short on gifts for youth. The SOS Christmas Program also uses funds raised to purchase local grocery store gift cards for clients, so they can enjoy a meaningful meal together over the holidays.

PRIME MINISTER WITH DUAL CITIZENSHIP?

MARKET DOG SITTING WOULD BE COMPLICATED

In June this year I became a Canadian citizen and willfully allowed my citizenship of birth to lapse. My loyalty and commitment only lies with the country that I chose to immigrate to and am proud to call home. NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, on the other hand, actively sought French citizenship as an adult (CBC News, January 17, 2012). Allegedly the only reason he did so was to prevent being separated from his wife and children at immigration when traveling. My spouse and I have travelled the world on differing passports, and the only separation we have ever encountered is standing in different passport queues at the port of entry. Neither of us suffering from long term separation anxiety disorder as a result! Ironically, Mulcair’s wife also has Canadian and French citizenships (CBC News, January 17, 2012), so why don’t they just both travel as Canadians? In 2012, Mulcair said he would not renounce the citizenship, but has now flip-flopped to say that he will renounce it, but only if he becomes prime minister (The Province, August 1, 2015). This man swore an oath of life long allegiance to France, which he is now happy to break. This is morally problematic. In 2006, Jack Layton said that a party leader should “hold only Canadian citizenship,” when the then-Liberal leader Stephane Dion held dual Canadian-French citizenship. (CBC News, January 17, 2012). If Mulcair is so adamant in retaining his French citizenship and feels such loyalty to France, perhaps he should renounce his Canadian citizenship instead and live in France? What a sad state of affairs when a recent immigrant to Canada shows less divided allegiance and loyalty to this great country, than the man who wants to be the future prime minister.

Re: Lenore Leitch’s letter to the editor “Dog ban is good” (The NEWS, Aug. 13). While it’s wonderful that the Saltspring SPCA has a large enough volunteer base to accomplish dog sitting at the market there, we find it difficult to have enough volunteers for the ongoing fundraising and dog socializing done for the animals without a home in our shelter’s care. Many of us donate a lot of our time in several areas to try to cover this shortfall. I challenge Leitch to take on/put into effect her suggestion and donate the money to the local SPCA. Some things she might consider: Volunteers available 52 weeks of the year for what could be a five hour shift. Volunteers sufficiently trained to handle the altercations that would occur with dogs unknown to each other being handled by strangers in a small space. (According to other writers these altercations seemingly occur at the market even when the dogs are under the alert care of their humans.) Waivers to be signed by volunteers and the dogs’ humans in the event of injuries to either dogs or people. First aid kits for humans and animals. Crates for dogs volunteers may have difficulty handling or when all the volunteers can’t show up. [Ah yes!] Volunteers will need to know how to have a dog enter a crate in a safe (for volunteers as well as dogs) and humane way. One crate per dog for sanitary/health reasons. Sturdy fencing to surround the area in the event a dog gets loose. At the end of the morning, disposal of full poop bags, with water bowls, crates and fencing needing to be disinfected and stored for next week’s use.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Shades of Green is all about the earth Owner Corrie Smith saw a need in the community for more eco-friendly, earth friendly options for shopping CARLI BERRY

Shades of Green is an ever evolving opportunity of eco-friendly supplies. Corrie Smith, owner of Shades of Green, said the business started because there wasn’t earth friendly options in town. “There was nothing in town that really catered to anything eco-friendly or earth friendly so I kind of decided I would morph into that here,” she said. Since 2009, Smith said she has expanded on different products. “Different companies are finding me over time,” she said. “Everyday we get new people in the store that have never been in before.” Smith has been debating on options for online sales. “I don’t have an online store yet, (it) possibly could happen,” she said. There has been competition with the online market, as with any local business, she said. “It’s just me so it’s hard when with family and you know, a farm.” She said recently the store has expanded its children’s line to include “more wood toys.” Children’s toys aren’t the only items

that have been changing in the store. “Diffusers and essential oils have been really expanding this year,” she said. Shades of Green is big on carrying items that are eco-friendly, recyclable and reusable. “People want options,” Smith said. She gets new ideas from people who come into the store all the time. Smith has been using organic products on herself for years. It started after she had health issues, she said. “(I’m) trying to not use any harsh synthetics on the body.” Smith has also lived in the Parksville area for her entire life, growing up in Errington. After her mother retired from her stained glass and glass engraving business, Smith set up her store in the same location. Shades of Green carries a variety of clothing, eco-friendly cleaning products and locally made jewellery and soaps. One of Smith’s favourite items to try out would be her stock of S’well water bottles. She also suggests the sandwich bags and essentials oils. The top seller of the store would have to be the gift cards, she said. “They’re a hot item for sure.”

She is also a promoter of local shopping. “The shop local (idea) is definitely catching on,” she said. “We’re trying to do that as a business community.” She said by shopping locally, this also promotes the town’s economy. “We’re all trying to work together to

make our areas nice for people to come visit,” she said. “Our businesses all support our community… I’m going to make money here but then go shopping at the farm stand or the farmer’s market.” Shades of Green is located at 117 Craig St. in Parksville.

When a Chinese farmer was quoted recently as saying: “it is a lot easier to make money in the stock market than it is to farm!” you had to know something was going to happen. After having gone vertical earlier in the year the Chinese stock market has hit a rough patch. Personally, I avoid investing directly in China, but that’s just me. There are plenty of investors (especially in China) who see their stock market as an easy way to a fortune. Maybe it is because their real estate market has fallen out of favour, but for whatever reason they have been pouring money into stocks, and in a lot of cases on margin. To make matters worse, many have been pledging gold as collateral. So when the speculative bubble be-

Victoria Symphony celebrating 75 years The symphony has 34 full time and 10 part time musicians CARLI BERRY reporter@pqbnews.com

The Victoria Symphony is coming back to Qualicum Beach Sept. 28 and along with it will be the Last Night of the Proms. The symphony has been performing in Qualicum Beach since 1993, director of marketing Jill Smillie said. Conductor Brian Jackson said Last Night is based on a series of famous concerts in England called The Proms. It is unusual that the Last Night of the Proms should start off a concert series in September, Jackson said with a laugh. Out of the 12 pieces selected he said the hardest piece to perform would have to be Elgar’s Variation 9 exerpt. But the musicians have had years of practice. They’re seasoned professionals that “can read anything that’s in front of them,” Jackson said. This year Jackson returns to conduct songs from Lord of the Rings, Downton Abby, I Wanna Hold Your Hand and selections from Mary Poppins. The symphony is celebrating its 75th year after local musicians and community members from the Naden Band formed the symphony in 1939, Smillie said. “After an unsuccessful attempt at organizing an orchestra and only one concert in 1939, musicians in the local community and members of the newly formed Naden Band joined together to form the Victoria Symphony Orchestra in 1941,” she said.

The Victoria Symphony will be performing at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre Sept. 28. The concert, Last Night of the Proms will feature songs from Lord of the Rings and Mary Poppins.

The first concert was held on May 18, 1942 in the Empress Hotel ballroom and the band has been evolving ever since. Smillie said, during the ’40s and ’50s the symphony played three to four concerts a year. In the ’60s they were performing seven to eight concerts and added se-

ries like “pops” and “family” concerts in the ’80s. Now they play over 60 concerts a year. “It’s a great introduction for light orchestra,” Jackson said. The symphony has 34 full time and 10 part time musicians who have two to five

rehearsals per performance. They come from across North America. Tickets are $32 and can be purchased at the Mulberry Bush Bookstores in Parksville and in Qualicum Beach. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre.

Local musicians playing a mix of classics and originals Band is a mix of young and old members and songs CARLI BERRY reporter@pqbnews.com

Are you a fan of classic rock? Blues? Jazz? 4 On The Floor will perform a mix of all these styles along with original songs of their own at the Shady Rest this Saturday, Aug. 29. Lead vocalist Dave Hendrickson said the band is a mix of both young students and older gentlemen, some of which he met through his classes at Vancouver Island University. He said it’s nice to see that young people still enjoy older music, “old souls appreciate old music.” One of his class requirements was to form a jazz combo with his classmates, and after forming the group, they stuck together, he said. He said it was different playing with a

mix of young and old musicians. “It’s a different influence.” He said the younger members of the group are skilled musicians and he sees potential for growth. The band consists of Dave Hendrickson on guitar and vocals, Peter Leclerc, his long-time band mate on guitar and vocals, Jordan Becker on drums and James Van Weerden on bass. They play a variety of classic rock tunes, which travels from generation to generation. Their set can be anything from Elvis Presley to the Sheepdogs. They also incorporate jazz and originals. “We’re upbeat, danceable,” he said. The band has only been playing together since June but he has experience playing and recording long before that. He has been living in the Parksville area for 37 years, he said, and is currently living at Spider Lake. See BAND PLANS page A29

Rock band sticks to classic roots

They only play original songs, no covers CARLI BERRY reporter@pqbnews.com

It’s classic rock, but it’s not Led Zepplin, or Pink Floyd. Coming to the Crown and Anchor Roadhouse Pub Aug. 27 are the Midnight Lions, a classic rock band hailing from Abbostford. Pianist/vocalist Alison May said she enjoys playing classic rock because “it’s different (from) what’s being played on the radio.” The Midnight Lions play a variety

of vocal harmonies, she said, along with folk rock. They only play original songs however, no covers. May said her life has always involved music. Her family has always been musical, her dad and grandmother both played piano and it made her want to start playing at 13. In high school, she said, she played with bass players and guitar players instead of sticking to the main music classes. Her influences include Zepplin and Floyd and she also looks up to singer Jackie Lee of Random Dander who

will be performing alongside them Aug. 27. The band consists of May, Brandon Clark on bass, Conor Barclay on drums and Simon Menard on guitar. All four members sing and they have only been together for a year and a half, May said. Qualicum Bay will be the last stop on a mini Vancouver Island tour. She said it’s their first time on the Island and they are also performing in Ucluelet and Duncan. They plan to release an album in 2016. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. in Qualicum Bay. At Bayview Dental we deliver the highest quality family dentistry and offer a full range of general dental and cosmetic procedures.

The Federation of Canadian Artists and its eleven chapters were founded in 1941 by a group of artists, including Group of Seven luminary, Lawren Harris. One of three chapters on Vancouver Island, the Arrowsmith Chapter was formed in 1995 and has since grown to its present roster of over 80 members. The Silk Worm Club was founded by Maureen Walker, AFCA and began with three members. For photographer Debra Kuzbik, the natural world in general, and forests in particular, has long been a source of wonder, personal renewal and inspiration. She prefers to interpret, rather than record the world around her honouring the transient beauty of the moment. ISLAND AND B.C. HOMES

House sales strong Real estate sales booming on Island and across the province in July with double digit increases The British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) reports that a total of 10,247 residential unit sales were recorded by the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in July, up 20.7 per cent from the same month last year. The Vancouver Island Real Estate Board also reported last week that sales of single family homes on the Island were up 13 per cent to 515. Provincially total sales dollar volume was $6.2 billion, a 33.9 per cent increase in comparison to the previous year. The average MLS residential price in the province rose to $608,294, an 11 per cent increase since last July. “Consumer confidence is brimming in the fastest growing economy in the country,” said Cameron Muir, BCREA chief economist. “Broad-based consumer de-

mand continues to push B.C. home sales higher in every region except the more resource dependent northern markets.” “Tighter market conditions are driving home prices higher as supply struggles to keep up with demand,” added Muir. The Fraser Valley experienced the strongest average price growth, climbing 13.5 per cent year-over-year to $571,700 on the strength of strong demand in the single-detached market. The year-to-date, B.C. residential sales dollar volume increased 36.4 per cent to $38.8 billion, when compared with the same period in 2014. Residential unit sales climbed by 22.7 per cent to 61,806 units, while the average MLS® residential price rose 11.1 per cent to $628,025. — Submitted by BCREA

Benno Herbert Kattenat November 9, 1932 July 29, 2015

With his much loved daughters holding his hand Ben left us peacefully to join his beloved Sharon. Ben loved music, woodworking, and time spent in Mexico. He was an artistic man who had a zest for life. He will be remembered by his family and friends with a smile and especially by his grandchildren for his silly rhyming and made up words. He is predeceased by his love Sharon, his parents Friedrich and Berta, brother Hank, son-in-law Larry. He is survived by his daughters, Janine (George), Michelle (Lorne), grandchildren Chad (Angela), Jeff, Kayla, Brock (Kelsey), great grandchildren, Nash, Mackenzie, Robert, and one on the way. Ben is also survived by his sister Ingrid (Rolph), niece Patty (Jeff ) and many other nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses who cared for Dad. There will be a celebration of life at a later date and Ben’s ashes will be scattered in his favorite place, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Generals start pre-season by beating Nanaimo Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals beat Buccaneers 4-1 and face them again on home ice Wednesday T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com

The Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals earned their first victory of the pre-season last Friday night as they came out on the right side of a 4-1 game over the Nanaimo Buccaneers. Kicking off the exhibition season, the Generals had goaltending to give them a chance to win the game and returning players finding the back of the net early on in the season. Forward Jordan Bautista found the back of the net twice, while forwards Logan Savard

and Tristan Sailor both lit the lamp for the Gens on the night. “It was a good way to start off our season,” head coach Brad Knight said. “Our veteran players that came back to the team showed their leadership on the ice and our first year players were impressive out there too. They fit right in and didn’t look out of place at all.” The Gens had two first year goaltenders in net, Austin Beauchamp and Matt Henwood. Both goaltenders shared the workload and both showed

their ability to get in the game and stop the puck from getting past them. “I thought our goalies handled themselves well,” Knight said. “We’ve got four goalies right now with the team and one coming in from Michigan this week as well, so there’s going to be lots of healthy competition going around at that position.” “You don’t win a lot of games without the help of good goaltending and that’s an area we’re going to look to be solid all season long for us.”

For Knight and the Generals, there won’t be much in terms of changes to the roster coming this Wednesday night as the team will once again play the Buccaneers, this time at Oceanside Place with a 7:30 puck drop slated inside Howie Meeker Arena. “If anything we’ll throw some younger guys in the game,” Knight said. “We’re really looking ahead here right now with the pre-season.” “We’re interested to see what our team is going to look like in a couple of years from now and

the pre-season is where we get to see our young players and what they’ve got to bring to the table.” With another four games left on their exhibition schedule, the Gens will have lots of time to look at their young talent and make the necessary adjustments to their lineup as well to put the team they want to see play out on the ice before the season kicks off on September 11 against the Campbell River Storm. Parksville Qualicum Beach players hope to field at least one, maybe two teams

How our communities acquired their names

T YSON TAYLOR

Oceanside comprises a number of both small and large communities. The familiar names of Parksville, Qualicum, Errington, Coombs or Bowser are places where we either live, visit or sometimes just drive through. Rarely though do we pause to think about why these places were so-named and how this informs us about the early history of Oceanside. Although the city of Parksville is now the biggest Oceanside community, back in the 1989 the settlement then known as “The River” had a population of just 38 pioneers. Nelson Parks was the first postmaster and in that same year, he hosted a social gathering of neighbours and fellow-settlers. The story tells that looking around he observed “With all the folks on the land it looks like Parks Village”; and so Parksville got its name. Before then, in 1886, Henry Lee arrived with his wife and two sons to clear the four lots of land that he had claimed for his family. The property lay between what was then known as “The River’ and the Qualicum area. At the time the area was forested and remote. To approach their acreage, close to the creek and ocean frontage, the Lees had to travel what was only a roughly hewn and often muddy trail. Across the creek the two Bott brothers were already there clearing their land. Given that these young men were known to come from French stock it seems likely that the area was named for them and to this day, the peaceful district that lies between Parksville and Qualicum is still recorded as French Creek. One of the earliest noted tributes to Qualicum was offered back in 1874 by explorer Dr Robert Brown. Travelling through the area, he spoke of a beautiful tract of land extending past the Qualicum River. The first settlers arrived a few years later when the Nanaimo to Parksville road reached Qualicum in 1894, followed not long after by the E & N railway, the pioneer community there begun to flourish. The community was named after the Coast Salish Qualicum band that once

With two weekends already in the books, Oceanside Minor Lacrosse is looking forward to one more exciting and successful weekend outside as they give players a chance to experience field lacrosse at Springwood Park. Players have been coming out from the Oceanside area and from as far away as Port Alberni to take to the field and learn all about field lacrosse. Ranging in age from seven through to 13 years old, players took part in basic drills and then scrimmaged, with some parents getting in on the fun as well, to end it all. After having no field lacrosse teams in the Oceanside area over the last few years, the hope is that this will bring a revival to the game and Oceanside Minor Lacrosse is hoping to field at least one, possibly two teams heading into the field lacrosse season this year. Anyone looking for more information can head to www.oceansidelacrosse.com.

occupied land by the Qualicum River. The name is rooted in the Salish Pentlach language and means “Where the dog salmon run”. Among the original settlers were Qualicum Tom and his wife Annie. Beyond Qualicum lies the village of Bowser. One of the earliest residents at the turn of the twentieth century was Phil Nile who lived in the area now known as Nile Creek. As the logging and fishing industries grew so did the population of the area. On April 1st, 1915 the neighbourhood post office was opened and named after William J. Bowser, the Conservative MLA and newly elected premier of British Columbia. It was Commissioner Thomas Bales Coombs, the Salvation Army’s first official leader in Canada who was given the brief to establish a land colony here in Canada. The acreages were partially cleared and laid out in fifteen 22 acre lots. Life for the newcomers proved to be hard and after just a few years many of the original settlers had left for the cities of Victoria and Vancouver. Though the Salvation Army Land Colony, named for General Coombs, no longer exists, there remains much of the dream. Many of the original lots can still be seen alongside Highway 4. Some are owned by later generations of the early pioneers. Most are farmed

by families who have small homes on their acreage and in Coombs even now there remains a strong sense of community. Between Parksville and Coombs lies the small town of Errington. When Joe McCarter, son of pioneer William McCarter was named as the new postmaster for the fledgling community he took a line from a then popular book of poems by Sir Walter Scott. Entitled “Jock of Hazeldean, the second stanza reads: Now let this wilful grief be done, And dry that cheek so pale; Young Frank is chief of Errington And lord of Langley-Dale;” So Errington was given its name! Close to the highway, by the Visitor Centre you will find the Craig Heritage Museum now known as Parksville Museum & Archives. This living museum is home to historic buildings from Parkville’s early days together with a host of artifacts and archives. These reflect the daily lives, homes, schooling and worship of the early communities together with an insight into the trades and industry of the area. There you can explore the pioneer buildings that include the original French Creek Post Office and watch the Oral History video presentation recalling the unique stories that shaped Oceanside.

“I think it’s going to be a good mix,” Knight said. “We’ve got a good number of returning players from last season and they’re all ready to work hard and prove that last season won’t be the way this team plays this year.” “We’ll be able to take a real good look at this team going forward with these exhibition games and make the changes we feel we need to but for the most part, I like the guys we’ve got here and we won’t have to do all that much to our roster.”

The Quality Foods Parksville Royals took to the Western Canadian Baseball Championships as Team B.C. and came away with a gold medal in dramatic fashion. It took them 11 innings to earn the win but the Royals capitalized with the bases loaded, as Adam McKillican drove home Nanoose Bay’s Josh Anderson for the game winner in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Royals would beat the St. Alberts (Alberta) Cardinals by a score of 2-1, their second victory over the Cardinals in the tournament. The Royals had six games in total at the

tournament, going 5-1 along the way through round robin and on their way to the finals. The Royals only loss came to the Parkland Expos in their first game, which they dropped by a score of 7-6. From there they would go on to beat the Northwest Pirates 7-3 and 6-1, 2-0 over the St. James A’s and then beating the Cardinals twice, 3-2 and then 2-1 in the gold medal game. The Royals will now return home and move straight into their fall league, as they’ll continue to practice and play all the way into October. From there, the Royals will head indoors for the winter to wrap up the 2015 calendar year.
