ello and welcome to the 121st anniversary of the Vancouver Island Exhibition. On behalf of the board of directors, volunteers, members and sponsors that make this an exciting and successful event, we would like to invite you to join us this year to experience Nanaimo’s premier Event of the Year. Join us at the Main Stage on Friday, Aug. 21, at 6:10 pm to celebrate the 2015 Opening Ceremonies. age awareness of the agricultural world that surrounds us and to demonstrate how it effects our everyday lives. As you explore our grounds, you will be delighted by the variety of livestock displays including cattle, horses, goats, rabbits, chickens and the many entertainment venues we offer. You’ll also want to check out: • Logger Sports returns again. Watch the woodchips fly as male and female competitors from across Western Canada, the U.S. and overseas come test their skills against one another and in Canadian Championship events. • Watch our friends from the Mid Island Tractor Club as they display their old time farm and

steam equipment and compete in tractor pulls. • The Pure Wrestling Association will be teaming up with the Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling during the fair to bring live professional wrestling back to the fair and to crown the “King of the Ex.” • Bring your kids to the McDonalds Kids Zone for all sorts of fun. On Saturday, join in the excitement of a rocket launch preformed by Vancouver Island Mad Science. In the McDonalds Kids Zone, they can bounce on our bouncy castles, get their face painted, make some beautiful arts&crafts and learn what it is like to be a “Farmer for a Day.” Make a donation in our wishing well and enter to win a bike. All proceeds are going to support Ronald McDonald House. Watch the West Coast Vaulters in the main ring. This is beautiful gymnastics to music on a very large horse. If you find yourself in need of a rest and food, visit our food vendors on site in our food court set up outside the Cliff McNabb arena.

On the upper level, dont miss the local arts and art work presented in the Home Arts building located in the Centennial building. Also, new this year in the Cliff McNabb arena is bingo for all three days of the fair, and the Island Chef Culinary Competition. For the hidden dare-devil in us all, spend a few hours at the hair-rising midway brought to you by Shooting Star Amusements. Once again the Thrifty Foods Main Stage will feature exceptional talent. Enjoy Econoline Crush and Daniel Wesley on Friday night, Lee Aaron and Headpins on Saturday night and Aaron Pritchett on Sunday. There is also other local entertainment all day long on both the main stage and the Tim Hortons Community Festival stage. I would like to thank everyone that has helped to make this event happen for the past 121 years. If it wasn’t for you, the VIEX wouldn’t be the fair it is today. See you at the FAIR! Minister: VIEX highlights the best of region

O

ur Government is proud to invest in community events that allow citizens of all ages to celebrate their traditions and take part in cultural activities rooted in local history and heritage. For 121 years, the Vancouver Island Exhibition has highlighted the best that the Nanaimo region has to offer. It informs and entertains its visitors while showcasing the cultural and agricultural heritage of this beautiful part of our country. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to thank the organizers, the artists and volunteers who worked together to make this year’s Exhibition possible. Best wishes for a successful event!

The Honourable/ L’honorable Shelly Glover

No visiting pets allowed at VIEX The Vancouver Island Exhibition is a great place to see farm animals, in fact they are one of the big attractions. But it’s not the place for family pets. In the past few years, there has been some confusion over the VIEX policy in regards to bringing pets onto the fair grounds. Please be advised that NO

PETS will be allowed onto the fairgrounds unless previously approved by the board of directors. Of course, this policy does not include people with disabilities accompanied by their registered service animals, handlers of service animals in training, and owners of certified therapy animals.

Cadora Drill Team is dressage at its very best The Courtenay Cadora Drill Team is a group of women (8-12 riders on average) from all different walks of life and occupations. They started doing dressage drill, mostly to get their horses

used to being in groups, and for them to be able to spend time together doing something they enjoy. They progressed to doing lunchtime performances at their local dressage shows, for

personal pride and a sense of accomplishment. What started as just a fun thing to do once in a while, has now turned into being requested to do performances and demos at local shows and fairs all over the Island.

Highlights for this group include performing at the “Just Horsin’ Around” exhibition, VIEX since 2010, the Comox Valley Exhibition, our local Dressage shows, and opening for the RCMP musical ride when

they performed in Courtenay in 2009. Through the winter months, they work on perfecting their choreography and music, to meet the horses’ tempo, and make it fun for the spectators.

emotional support from other families experiencing similar situations. For kids, the House is a place

to play, to make friends and to experience the magic of childhood, ever as they fight serious illness.

More than just a place to stay, Ronald McDonald House BC helps families heal better, together.

Island blacksmiths work to be on display The Vancouver Island Blacksmiths Association from Victoria, who are ‘Dedicated to the revival or the King of Crafts,’ are very excited to have been given the opportunity by VIEX to present The Gallery at this year’s Exhibition. Blacksmiths of the original ‘King of Crafts’ fame have been known for many millennia as crafters of arrows, swords, battle armour, farming implements and a multitude of other items to protect, strengthen, or lighten our life tasks. What isn’t so well-known is the artistic side of the craft. VIBA has been working on

the portable travelling gallery to highlight some of the incredible art that is ‘above and beyond’ being produced by local blacksmiths. This year, our trial run version of The Gallery will be accompanying the Flyin’ Forge on its yearly travels to several fall fairs on Lower Vancouver Island including one of four favourite venues — the VIEX at Nanaimo. The Gallery will feature a ‘Gallery Style’ presentation of some of the incredible ‘steel’ art produced at VIBA members. Everyone is welcome to come on in, visit the Gallery and be amazed.

Cooking competition allows audience tasters Do you love to watch cooking shows where chefs who thrive on competition in a fast paced environment create fabulous food? Then come down and watch the VIEX Island Chef Culinary Competition in the Cliff McNabb Arena. The pre-show begins at 12:15 p.m. each day with the very entertaining chef Darcie McBride from Dish on Bowen Road, who assures us that he is going to tease the audience and take their taste buds to new heights. After the pre-show, the VIEX Island Chef competition starts at 1 p.m. This year, we have thrown in a twist. Audience members will have the opportunity to sample three appetizers and cast their vote for the best one. These votes will be added to the final score of the contestants. Tickets can be purchased for $8 up until Aug. 20 at Dish on Bowen Road or Real Foods in the Old City Quarter. If you miss the early bird offer, any remaining tickets can be purchased for $10 at the event.

These are for the Friday and Saturday shows only. Quantities are limited to 25 tickets per show, so get in early. This year will feature two qualifying rounds, with amateur chefs competing on Friday and professional chefs competing on Saturday. Chefs will create appetizers (which the public can sample) and a main course. During the main course, contestants can only use ingredients from the basic pantry and the “Thrifty Foods Mystery Bag,” part of a contest being put on by Thrifty’s. The winners from these rounds will go to the finale on Sunday where they will go up against savvy Kristina Stauffer from Cassidy Country Kitchens who was a major contender from last year’s show. The Sunday finale is all about the Thrifty Foods Mystery Bag and our chefs will only have one shot at wowing the judges. The pre-show begins at 12:15 p.m., and the stage will really heat up at 1 p.m. Don’t miss it!

Legendary Lee Aaron performs at VIEX on Saturday Coming from a diverse musical background, Lee Aaron released her first album, ‘The Lee Aaron Project’ in 1982, while still in her teens. This album garnered her international attention, fueling further success throughout the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. Singles such as “Metal Queen,” “Whatcha Do To My Body,” and “Barely Holdin’ On” ensured her multiple platinum status in Canada, and a host of international tours ensured steady success in Europe. In the 2000’s Aaron wanted to show her versatility by performing Jazz, Blues and even Opera. While she continues to tour, she has somewhat withdrawn from the spotlight in order to focus on her family life. Aaron plays the VIEX Mainstage at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Pacific Northwest Raptors Ltd. is Vancouver Island’s premier birds of prey attraction and draws locals and tourists from all over. The organization’s goal is to promote conservation and raise awareness of birds of prey. We work with many raptors for educational programs as well as bird control. We have a visitor centre in Duncan where we work with eagles, hawks, falcons and more — to bring people closer to nature and inspire awe in our natural world. Our birds fly free — and enjoy the sky — to help us show people the power of an eagle, the hunting skills of a hawk, the speed of

a falcon and the quiet grace of an owl. We also offer many different short hands-on courses for people to get up close and personal with some of these fantastic birds. In addition, we provide bird control services, working at a variety of industrial sites to improve safety, and agriculture sites to improve production (i.e. minimize loss from problem birds). AUGUST 21-23, 2015 || VANCOUVER ISLAND EXHIBITION || 23

Aaron Pritchett plays the VIEX Mainstage Sunday The hit “Hold My Beer” gained country star Aaron Pritchett plenty of airplay in 2006, but on the phone the B.C.-born singer-songwriter sounds humble and friendly, rather than the cocky gent in the aforementioned country foot stomper. The Canadian Country Music Award-winner plays the Vancouver Island Exhibition on Sunday (Aug. 23), at 3 p.m. on the Thrifty Foods Mainstage. Earlier this year Pritchett played in Nanaimo as part of his as part of the West Coast leg of his Outlaws Outsiders tour “I love bus tours, because you get to reconnect with the band, you get to just hang out with boys, and it’s travelling in style. It’s the slowest form of travel, but it’s probably the best,” he said.

“I was hooked. I wanted to sing in front of people all the time.” Aaron Pritchett, country musician

Although Pritchett says he played the role of “dad” on the tour — his son Jordan Pritchett is a member of King Cash along with singer Dan Arnold — he was quick to add: “Actually, the joke is on them, they don’t realize that I can actually party just as hard as anybody else.” Pritchett, also a past Juno Award-nominee who has toured with the likes of U.S. country star Toby Keith, said his love for music began early. “When I was a kid, I really

loved listening to all the music my parents listened to,” he said, recalling the voices of James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Smoky Robinson emanating from the stereo. His entrance into the music world, however, began in a Karaoke bar. “(I’d) never sang in front of anybody before . . . and I got up there and sang a Foreigners song called ‘I’ve Been Waiting For a Girl Like You,’ one of the highest songs any male human shouldn’t sing,” he said. “But I got up there and did it for my very first song, and the guy that was running the Karaoke actually asked, ‘Do you want to work for me?’ And it kind of started from there. “From there I was hooked. I wanted to sing in front of people all the time.”

Vaulting an ancient tradition

D

West Coast Vaulters have more than 15 years experience.

ating back to Roman times, equestrian vaulting is one of the oldest equestrian disciplines, and has recently increased in popularity in North America. With over 15 years’ of history, West Coast Vaulters (formerly Mt. Arrowsmith) is proud to be a significant presence on the Canadian vaulting scene. Vaulting is a great way to improve balance and harmony with the horse, improve your riding seat and work with a team. Despite its daring appearance, because the vaulting horses are so well-trained and always controlled by the central lunger, vaulting is actually the safest equestrian sport. Vaulters can compete both individually and in teams. The West Coast Vaulters perform all weekend at the Main Ring Location #18 at 4 p.m.
